[q] hdmi audio out - Motorola Droid RAZR

I want to know if it is possible to use the 3.5 mm from motorola razr for audio when using HDMI. I want to hook it up to my projector but the projector has only 1 watt audio out.

I bet you can. If no-one answers before, I'll test for you tomorrow morning as I have all the gear.

Yep it does work as expected. used netflix to test and mirrored display on my tv through hdmi and 3.5mm jack to my 2.1 speakers. Sounds great!

Sorry, I'm not very technically minded. How did you do it exactly? And could this be done with any HDMI phone? I am asking because I can't do it on my xperia neo and was wondering if the razr was any different.

[solved after ICS update] Only one audio channel over HDMI?

I like the Prime so far, but I only get one channel audio over HDMI to my 2 year old Sony Bravia TV.
I just sold my TF101 and it worked fine with both audio channels over HDMI.
Anyone else got this problem?
I grabbed a 6' micro hdmi cable at Radio Shack since I was wanting to try it out.
Solved for now:
Works with some TVs and not others:

Maybe Prime only can output Mono audio because the Primes own speaker are Mono?
If you connect the Prime to a receiver and 5.1 audio system with hdmi and then starts to play a video that's have 5.1 or dts.
will the receiver show that it's gets dts audio from the Prime or will Prime only send mono/stereo to the receiver?
If we don't can get 5.1/dts or even stereo sound true the hdmi that's is a big fail and it will almost be useless to use Prime like a Media center connected to your tv or audio system.

Headphones are stereo. But disabled when hdmi is connected.
My amp is to old to show the input audio type in the mode I have it in.
But all other inputs to the TV are stereo/surround/etc.
(everything is routed thru the TV, and then out from the TV to the amp)
No one else has tried HDMI yet I guess.
I hope not. Im definitely planning on using HDMI. Both my Prime and my HDMI cable should be here next Tuesday... it'd be great if someone could test before then, if not I can.
I already have a laptop with buggy HDMI... maybe a firmware update later will fix if this is an issue.

Just tried it in my Anthem MRX 700 AV Receiver And it def is showing 5.1 while playing a 1080p 5.1 Rip of Avatar
Ive only got 1 channel coming out of my marantz 5006, and my 1602
I wonder if using MX player and selecting software audio decode would fix this... saw something about this in the other thread, maybe that would help.
And Merry Christmas!
mxplayer and all audio options still just yields one audio channel over hdmi for me
and half a dozen other players
weird my receiver says 5.1 but it does not sound like it
Crap! I just tested mine - same problem: left channel only
It is starting to look like I will be returning my Prime.
Out of all the issues I see with the Prime. This is the one that has me bummed the most as I wanted to use the Prime as my media hub when out and about. I wasn't expecting 5.1 necessarily but it has to do stereo right? Maybe this is a software bug that they can fix in a firmware update?

I can't imagine this is hardware. I know at least BS player is decoding 5.1

That's what I'm thinking, something in software.

It seems as though the prime is a little finnicky about HDMI devices. I'm having HDMI sync issues on my 28" LCD and my Panasonic plasma (flickering output, output jumping between tab and display.) But my newer 55" Panasonic LCD has no issues.

The ICS update today fixed the audio problem with the HDMI connection from the Transformer Prime to my Sony Bravia.

Happens too me too. I about gave up on it, but tried it with watch app and it worked. Don't know why. The same adapter works all the time on my phone.

I bought it from ebay... The only way to get audio is through 3.5 headphones or speakers

Try with a different (newer) HDMI cable. All HDMI cables are not the same and just because it works with some DVD player does not mean it will work with the MHL box. I have seen cases where this is caused by the cable.

I agree with this. When I use a 3rd party app like BS Lite everything is choppy. When I use the stock app everything works fine.

Anyone figured it out yet? I just bought a Blackmagic Intensity Pro card to make gameplay/review vids of android games, but I dont get any audio. The capture software gives me 16 audio channels I can record from, but even by turning on all 16 I dont get any audio.
There's a slight chance there might be something wrong with the card or the equipment I use, but i highly doubt that.
Configuration: Samsung Galaxy Nexus -> Samsung HDTV Adapter -> A to A HDMI Cable -> Blackmagic Intensity Pro -> (Capture Software: Blackmagic Media Express)
I do use my Samsung Galaxy Nexus with the official Samsung HDMI/MHL - adapter.
Any suggestions?
None of you guys asking about sound on HDMI have said what device you are connecting to. I get perfect audio on my Samsung HDTV from the generic MHL adapter on the Flyer via HDMI cable. Not every TV or device is capable of receiving audio over HDMI. That's why they added the extra 3.5 analog audio jack as an option.
The Blackmagic Intensity Pro should work fine with either HDMI audio or analog audio. have you checked it with a known good HDMI source such as a DVD player or Cable box?
I am having the same issue with my galaxy note. solo no solution?
I am returning my MHL and getting a replacement which they will test before sending to me. Hopefully it is the cable and not my phone.

You might want to get the official HTC adapter. They've dropped in price considerably. I bought mine for ~$15.

I bought the one for the S3, http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00A169TCI/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and Video works and charging works but it doesnt give me any sound on Games.. and unfortunately i thought my N7 would work through it but it doesnt hahaha
Since you bought it off ebay, pull the back cover and look at the screws to see if the void stickers are still there (one red on white and one white on black) covering the screws. The usb port is prone to break on these and in replacing the PCB, if you don't pay attention you can pull the audio cable that feeds the board and break it.
this only compromises audio with mhl through usb port.
Maybe the problem comes from the cable ...

[Q] How to 3.5mm microphone input with 3.5mm stereo output?

What I need to do with my atrix is plug in a microphone via 3.5mm jack and playback over 3.5mm output to stereo. I've seen adapters to plug in with stereo 3.5mm and microphone 3.5mm to 1 3.5mm jack. I know the atrix has multi functions on the 3.5mm jack. I wasn't sure how I could harness this function within the Android OS?
So I plan on getting a studio quality microphone with a standard 3.5mm jack. I'll be plugging this into the atrix by a 2 way dongle if that's possible? Input/output dongle? Then it'll be outputting the audio from the microphone to the speakers for amplification or whatever output source of choice.
Usually I'd use my laptop to do this function. However, my laptop is a huge pain to use and I'd prefer to use my phone since it's way more convenient.
THANKS GUY'S!
Can the atrix record from external microphone?
Studio mike to mini Jack is s waste of time. You need a balanced cannon socket to get the benefit.

Thats cool I was wondering if I could record using an external microphone?
I can record from the Mic on my headphones, do I don't see why not.

That's great to know. So then how could I then playback what's being recorded in real time?
Sounds like you are trying to use it as a multi track recorder. Have you tried one of the multi track apps? Something like audio evolution et al?

Great idea. Now that's promising! If there's an app that can precisely control each individual steps on the 3.5mm jack. There might be several functions available like spdif out via 3.5mm dongle or something? Or a audio brick with a microphone input and stereo output so once that cable is dialed in. It should honestly work perfectly. As long as the app can hold it's own. I'll check it out.
What cable do you think I should use for this function?
Any other apps available? How easy would it be to write?
You're looking into making your Atrix to act like external audio interface with low latency monitoring. No, AFAIK you won't get satisfying results on any android device. It has something to do how android drivers handle audio. I was looking into iRig for android and found out that it's not going to happen.
However, high quality recording is possible. You would need adapter with preamplifier. I found a perfect one (MIKI) and have seen it in action. It enables your android device to use any dynamic mic for recording. Using appropriate adapter with this you could even use condenser mics. Price tag of €100 is the only thing that's holding me back to buy it.
Accompany it with app such as PC Recorder and you're all set to go.
Yeah, the audio stack in Android is pretty crap. I'm guessing it's the whole running in a java vm instead of native code?
My old 2007 2G iPhone with its 128MB RAM and ~500MHz cpu works fine as guitar effects processor, my last year's dual core Atrix with 1GB RAM lags like a mofo. As does every Android phone we tried. Get the basics right Google!

I can't find that device anymore?

I need to plug in a mic into android phone then playback over the 3.5mm stereo output.
THANKS
Good news everyone!

Optical Audio Out on Prime

I'm looking to find a way to get optical audio from my Prime. I'm hoping to connect the HDMI and have the digital audio be converted into an optical out so that I can get digital audio on my home audio and car audio system.
I bought a 35mm headphone jack to optical adapter somewhere about 6 months ago to do something similar. It seems like radio shack should carry them. I'm not 100% sure where I bought it, but worth a shot.

I think those are for minidiscs and anything that has dual use headphone port, but surely the Tf is audio only?
The easiest way is to use a tv without optical out. I use one on my LG 50" to 5.1. Works for my tab, laptop and comp. As far as the car, you'll have to get a deck or car tv with HDMI in, but I haven't seen anything in person that wasn't analog for audio. Decks also have bluetooth. I have a JVC that works well with audio streaming.

[Q] Is it possible to output digital audio s/pdif bypassing phone dac

Hi guys,
I'm looking to purchase a new mobile soon and liked the idea of the 120fps video possibility the z2 brings. However one of the main things I will be using the phone for is as my car's audio system. It takes a digital signal via coaxial. I have a hdmi to coaxial converter to strip out the audio signal and I know it is possible to purchase a miniusb to hdmi cable for the phone which I can then power off the car battery with a 12v to 5v converter - however does the phone itself support doing this? Is there any apps that will output the digital file without processing it through the phones dac? Is there a limit to the bit quality of the sample e.g. 44.
Many thanks for any help with this - sorry if it's a dumb question but I didn't manage to find the answer when I browsed the forum.
If there is an alternative phone that would be better for this please recommend away! (I briefly looked at the Meizu quad core phone but the phone itself doesn't have much support and if I'm correct the newer versions of android may support what I am trying to achieve?)
Cheers!
Darren
the stock rom/kernel comes with native support for USB audio. I've used it with a fiio e17 which has an SPDIF out

Thank you for the reply! What are you using cable wise? Mini usb to hdmi to a splitter then to s/pdif input into the fiio e17? Did you have to change the options to output digital audio? Does it bypass the equalizer/dac in the phone?
Many thanks!
