I like the Prime so far, but I only get one channel audio over HDMI to my 2 year old Sony Bravia TV.
I just sold my TF101 and it worked fine with both audio channels over HDMI.
Anyone else got this problem?
I grabbed a 6' micro hdmi cable at Radio Shack since I was wanting to try it out.
Solved for now:
Works with some TVs and not others:

Maybe Prime only can output Mono audio because the Primes own speaker are Mono?
If you connect the Prime to a receiver and 5.1 audio system with hdmi and then starts to play a video that's have 5.1 or dts.
will the receiver show that it's gets dts audio from the Prime or will Prime only send mono/stereo to the receiver?
If we don't can get 5.1/dts or even stereo sound true the hdmi that's is a big fail and it will almost be useless to use Prime like a Media center connected to your tv or audio system.

Headphones are stereo. But disabled when hdmi is connected.
My amp is to old to show the input audio type in the mode I have it in.
But all other inputs to the TV are stereo/surround/etc.
(everything is routed thru the TV, and then out from the TV to the amp)
No one else has tried HDMI yet I guess.
I hope not. Im definitely planning on using HDMI. Both my Prime and my HDMI cable should be here next Tuesday... it'd be great if someone could test before then, if not I can.
I already have a laptop with buggy HDMI... maybe a firmware update later will fix if this is an issue.

Just tried it in my Anthem MRX 700 AV Receiver And it def is showing 5.1 while playing a 1080p 5.1 Rip of Avatar
Ive only got 1 channel coming out of my marantz 5006, and my 1602
I wonder if using MX player and selecting software audio decode would fix this... saw something about this in the other thread, maybe that would help.
And Merry Christmas!
mxplayer and all audio options still just yields one audio channel over hdmi for me
and half a dozen other players
weird my receiver says 5.1 but it does not sound like it
Crap! I just tested mine - same problem: left channel only
It is starting to look like I will be returning my Prime.
Out of all the issues I see with the Prime. This is the one that has me bummed the most as I wanted to use the Prime as my media hub when out and about. I wasn't expecting 5.1 necessarily but it has to do stereo right? Maybe this is a software bug that they can fix in a firmware update?

I can't imagine this is hardware. I know at least BS player is decoding 5.1

That's what I'm thinking, something in software.

It seems as though the prime is a little finnicky about HDMI devices. I'm having HDMI sync issues on my 28" LCD and my Panasonic plasma (flickering output, output jumping between tab and display.) But my newer 55" Panasonic LCD has no issues.

The ICS update today fixed the audio problem with the HDMI connection from the Transformer Prime to my Sony Bravia.

Im running royal ginger which comes with the netflix app and im wondering if there is a way to view what i have on the tv. Pretty much like an HDMI cable without the HDMI port on the phone. Is there an adapter or something? I know there is a cable which goes into the headphone jack but i dont know if it will be able to play the movies on the big screen

I really don't mean to sound like a smartass, but your best bet for Netflix on a TV is a videogame system or blu-ray player that streams Netflix. I just don't think the mobile app is cut out for displaying on another screen. It barely manages to do it on the phone's.

Have you tried dlna, many newer tvs/ps3/xbox360 support it.
Why not just stream it through your laptop via and HDMI cable? That's what I do, works perfect. Or of course you can do what the guy two posts above me said. I just don't think Netflix on our phone is very practical anyways. Eats battery like crazy and heats up the phone when played too long.

Question: Have you ever seen any spec list for our phone mention HDMI out?
the DLNA will only stream content via wifi that is on our SDCard, you cannot stream apps or streaming media.

i know that the MT4G does not have HDMI, but what I am asking is if there is a way to output the screen onto the tv in a similar fashion as an HDMI. On amazon there is a cable that is designed for this using a 3.5mm headphone jack and it has the red/white/yellow plugs. My tv does not have DLNA and I do not own a blu ray player or gaming device. However I was planning on going to movie trading company or a pawn shop or something to see if there is one available. Which are the best blu ray players? if i cant find one for cheap then I will be buying the cable since it is only $9
That cable will not work with this phone. Our 3.5mm audio jack is for AUDIO only, there is no video coming out of that jack.
The 3.5mm to rca is for (mostly older, like more then 2 years) expandable mobile bluray/dvd players. I know because I have one of these mobile devices.
A standard 3.5mm jack is capable of doing three things, but most of them are only capable of 2 (stereo audio), and a few can only do one (mono audio). In our case, 2 channels are for left and right audio and 1 channel is used for mic input.
If you connect this cable to your television, you will most likely be connecting a port on your phone used for an unpowered microphone to a port on your television waiting to accept a standard def signal.
I wouldn't be surprised if most televisions put out a little tiny bit of power over that port just so it can accept the expected analog signal. My assumption is based on taking the unhooked cable and running your finger over it and watching static on the tv. You shouldn't be surprised if you destroy your phone, or at least the microphone input when you use that cable.
Also when shopping for electronics, using the criteria of "best and cheap" is like saying "yeah, man I totally hooked up with this super hot 400 lb chick"
If you want best, get a samsung or sony or phillips. If you want cheap, go insignia or dynex. If you want not so bad, and somewhat cheaper, look at a visio.
Remember, when dealing with electronics, just because it fits doesn't mean you should stick it in the hole. This might also be good advice when dealing with fat chicks.

You cannot DLNA stream NetFlix with our phones. It's [as of right now] impossible. Netlfix doesn't support it, and Twonky doesn't support it. Nor do we have any output of video, the USB jack and the headphone jack do not support HDMI or RCA output as of right now.
If you are wanting a cheap way to watch netflix you can either get a Roku Box, for like 75-80 USD or you can buy a ~125.00 USD blue ray player.

I have a friend with a Visio Blu-Ray player, it's not horrible, but it's not top notch either. I can tell a difference between my PS3 and his Visio. IT would also depend on the quality of the TV the [OP] is dealing with. If it's a 720p or 480p TV the brand will not matter that much. a 60Mhz 1080i or 1080p LCD/Plasma screen possibly. If they have a 1080p 120Mhz + or LED TV you are exactly right.

The tv I have is an AOC tv that I found at my grandfathers house. Its got 1 HDMI port and its an HD flatscreen but by looking at it it seems to be either low/mid-range quality or one of the first HD tvs. Im not a tv expert but those are the assumtions I think i can make. I dont want a high-end blu ray player because it will be traveling between dorm/home fairly often but I don't want a crappy one either. Thats why I was going to go buy a used one and hopefully get a quality machine for a low price

Try with a different (newer) HDMI cable. All HDMI cables are not the same and just because it works with some DVD player does not mean it will work with the MHL box. I have seen cases where this is caused by the cable.

I agree with this. When I use a 3rd party app like BS Lite everything is choppy. When I use the stock app everything works fine.

Anyone figured it out yet? I just bought a Blackmagic Intensity Pro card to make gameplay/review vids of android games, but I dont get any audio. The capture software gives me 16 audio channels I can record from, but even by turning on all 16 I dont get any audio.
There's a slight chance there might be something wrong with the card or the equipment I use, but i highly doubt that.
Configuration: Samsung Galaxy Nexus -> Samsung HDTV Adapter -> A to A HDMI Cable -> Blackmagic Intensity Pro -> (Capture Software: Blackmagic Media Express)
I do use my Samsung Galaxy Nexus with the official Samsung HDMI/MHL - adapter.
Any suggestions?
None of you guys asking about sound on HDMI have said what device you are connecting to. I get perfect audio on my Samsung HDTV from the generic MHL adapter on the Flyer via HDMI cable. Not every TV or device is capable of receiving audio over HDMI. That's why they added the extra 3.5 analog audio jack as an option.
The Blackmagic Intensity Pro should work fine with either HDMI audio or analog audio. have you checked it with a known good HDMI source such as a DVD player or Cable box?
I am having the same issue with my galaxy note. solo no solution?
I am returning my MHL and getting a replacement which they will test before sending to me. Hopefully it is the cable and not my phone.

I bought the one for the S3, http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00A169TCI/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and Video works and charging works but it doesnt give me any sound on Games.. and unfortunately i thought my N7 would work through it but it doesnt hahaha
Since you bought it off ebay, pull the back cover and look at the screws to see if the void stickers are still there (one red on white and one white on black) covering the screws. The usb port is prone to break on these and in replacing the PCB, if you don't pay attention you can pull the audio cable that feeds the board and break it.
this only compromises audio with mhl through usb port.
Maybe the problem comes from the cable ...
Hi Xda forum, I just bought asus transformer prime. I was able to output Hdmi(Honeycomb) to my plasma tv in the afternoon, however after I've upgraded to ICS, my plasma tv could no longer even detect the hdmi output with my prime tablet. I replaced the cable with a new one and still nothing happens.
If I plug in nothing happens, no reaction from my tv and tablet. Please help. What should I do ?
I'm obligated to ask you to double check the input on your TV.
TF201 | XDA Premium
Yes, I did check the input on my tv. I was able to output my prime onto my tv in the afternoon (still running HC).
My experience was just the opposite. I have a Sony Bravia TV and the hdmi output was only playing through the left channel with Honeycomb, but after ICS it is partially fixed as now it plays stereo. I would like to see it be able to pass thru surround sound too (did you hear that ASUS?)
I had a similar experience except it only involves audio. HDMI out to my tv (then back into the amp) was absolutely fine under HC. Updating to ICS stopped the audio from working, although I can still see video. Not a huge issue for me as I can get audio over the headphone socket, but it is still annoying.
The cable I initially used was bought some time ago, but it works when I connect the Prime to a Sony HMZ. I'm wondering if the audio output format has changed and my tv or amp isn't recognizing it.
Can anyone confirm whether there are HDMI settings that can help myself and the OP. I *DID* see some settings once, but can't seem to find them again.

Man, I was kinda looking forward to using this function. For the most part my Prime seems to be flawless. Any recommendations for a decent cable so I can give it a try and report back.
Not sure if you guys noticed but there has been an Asus rep here on our forums trying to help trouble shoot. Gary Key is his user name, maybe he could be made aware of the problem. He seems to have been extremely helpful thus far.

Maybe he can... but I don't know how they're going to address the rounded edge issue. That being, the micro HDMI feel very loose plugged in and it seems the physical port degrades also. It means that you can't use the tablet to play Rip Tide or whatever because the cord will fall out or port gets bent. And yes, I have a serial number Mr. Key.
The issue for me right now is the fact that my pioneer plasma pdp 435hdg tv can't detect the hdmi when connected to my prime. I tried it before I updated to ICS and it worked!...Very strange. Tried changing the cable and all no problem whatsoever.
My cable actually fits in very snuggly, not loose or anything.

What can I do ? I've emailed to asus support team but no reply yet.
Problems
HDMI out worked flawlessly for me with HC but after the ICS update my TV also cannot detect input, tried all 3 HDMI ports just comes up with no input.....
Notes: I used one TV under HC and a different one under ICS, could change outcome
ICS also gave me the diagonal flicker, occasional reboot, and sometimes auto-orientation will stop working.
Ahh you're facing the same issue as me. May I know what Brand is your tv,bro?
TVs
The one that worked on honeycomb was a Coby....fairly cheap one
THe other on that I tried to use but failed with ICS was LG
Mine's a Pioneer plasma. It was very shocking for me because it worked an hour ago in HC and after updating to ICS it can't even detect hdmi. Certain that it isn't a HW problem just a SW prob with ICS and certain Tv's. But no answer so far from Asus/ Google worries me.
I'm pretty sure I remember reading in a Mobile tech Review article that the Prime ICS has issues outputing 5.1 audio, and that only certain channels, 2 of 5 speakers and the bass came through. So I'm guessing it's a known issue that Asus needs to fix in an update.
Updates?
Anyone else having problems??? Any information regarding this problem from Asus yet?
going into the notifications and clicking on hdmi notification made it show up on my tv
I got a replacement order on mine, my wifi is sheet, and the HDMI doesn't work. I've tested the wire with 3 TV's(Vizio,Samsung,LG) got nothing. Had my buddy test his prime with the wire and kaboom it worked.
Id get it replaced.
firmware fix
I will test this weekend if it works with the new firmware that was released on the 18th...if anyone else who had problems can test before hand please do so
Tried with the new update but still doesn't show up on my tv.
I want to know if it is possible to use the 3.5 mm from motorola razr for audio when using HDMI. I want to hook it up to my projector but the projector has only 1 watt audio out.
I bet you can. If no-one answers before, I'll test for you tomorrow morning as I have all the gear.

Yep it does work as expected. used netflix to test and mirrored display on my tv through hdmi and 3.5mm jack to my 2.1 speakers. Sounds great!
Sorry, I'm not very technically minded. How did you do it exactly? And could this be done with any HDMI phone? I am asking because I can't do it on my xperia neo and was wondering if the razr was any different.
I'm looking to find a way to get optical audio from my Prime. I'm hoping to connect the HDMI and have the digital audio be converted into an optical out so that I can get digital audio on my home audio and car audio system.
I bought a 35mm headphone jack to optical adapter somewhere about 6 months ago to do something similar. It seems like radio shack should carry them. I'm not 100% sure where I bought it, but worth a shot.

I think those are for minidiscs and anything that has dual use headphone port, but surely the Tf is audio only?
The easiest way is to use a tv without optical out. I use one on my LG 50" to 5.1. Works for my tab, laptop and comp. As far as the car, you'll have to get a deck or car tv with HDMI in, but I haven't seen anything in person that wasn't analog for audio. Decks also have bluetooth. I have a JVC that works well with audio streaming.
