[Q] Flashing CustomROM removes Branding? - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am considering buying a branded Motorola Atrix (O2 branding) and just wanted to know if i will be able to flash a custom ROM on it when i root it or if the branding prevents that? In case it’s possible, can the flash remove the branding?
The shop specifies for the branding:
No hardwarebranding, only start up animation
I searched for similar threads but it seems as if this depends on the specific model so i wanted to make sure if it works in my case.
Thx in advance

I'm not sure if i get your question..but let me give you my experience..
I got an AT&T atrix nd rooted it, then i flashed the darkside rom on it, earlier the status bar showed AT&T on it, now it doesn't.
And the AT&T boot animation has been replaced with a Darkside boot animation also.
So, no visible reference exists to AT&T exists in my atrix.
Hope that helps.
Cheers

Thx a lot, that’s exactly what I wanted to know. Sometimes i just have a hard time getting my ideas across since English isn’t my first language.

Debranding HTC Hero- comments?

Hello. I have just received a new G2 (aka Hero) on T-mobile UK.
I am planning on doing this, please can you tell me if this would work:
1.Installing a recovery image
2.Booting into recovery and making a Nandroid backup
3.Installing a generic HTC Rom which has been packed into update.zip NB.Rom is a stock rom and therefore not rooted
As I understand after flashing I would lose rooting and would need to root again if I need to. However, I don't need to so am not too bothered.
I am hoping that this would remove T-Mobile branding, but mainly make the phone quicker as it is running the latest ROM. Would this technique work?
I would also like to know wether my sim-lock status would be affected?
Also if Donut/Android 1.6 is released OTA by HTC would my phone update OTA?
Finally, does that mean once I have flashed it, I will not be able to access the recovery partition thing which includes Nandroid etc.?
Please answer my questions and comment if you have any reservations/concerns about this. All comments are much appreciated.
bump-please help
Bit previous with the bump after such a sort time??
To answer your questions:
First of all, as long as your G2 still has the original Hero firmware, you are probably ok with your plan. If you've got the latest firmware, you'll probably have to use the gold card technique.
If you install a generic ROM, you'll lose most the T-Mobile branding, but to be honest there was very little anyway. The T-Mobile splash screen when you switch on will remain though.
SIM-lock has nothing to do with your ROM - it was locked before it will still be locked after you update the ROM, and vice versa.
Finally, on the subject of an OTA, who knows???!!! I really wouldn't worry about it.

Dave
Thanks Dave. Does anyone else have anything to say?
new user, similar question.
got myself a T-mobile G2 yesterday, thinking that it's the same thing as HTC Hero. ok, it's only a software difference but now i'm unable to flash it.
software version is 2.73.116.61 which is T-mobile version of course, and comparing version numbers to recent ones it looks really outdated. is it? on T-mobile UK support pages it's even older one. tried to download official version but HTC says there is no support for my device, based on serial number. also tried to flash with newest downloaded from here but no luck, got error 131
so, what can I do? root or goldcard?
thanx
You will need to goldcard to downgrade your ROM, before you'll be able to "upgrade" it to a custom ROM.

Debranding Optimus Hero (ORANGE)
Hi everyone.
I am an Android rookie, but i am trying to learn more and more each day.
I bought recently a HTC Hero from optimus operator (Portugal) - Orange - and it came with 1.5 version of the OS. There is original 2.1 version but not for my operator.
I already made an goldcard for it, removed simlock, and rooted but now i would like to know step by step what to do?
what rom (original and generic) should i install to have 2.1?
How to do it, with goldcard inside cellphone?
It is possible to go back?
I have read in Q&A that some orange phones, whem the debranding is done, loose the network due to some radio network imcompabilities... how can i know if that is or is not my case?
I would be greatful for all the help someone could give me.
Many thanks

Look at the guides in the android development section of how to root. If the phone is running a very old firmware the likelyhood is that you won't need to downgrade and therefore may not need a goldcard. But basically, you need to root and install a recovery image then you can flash a rom from the hero development section.

Now my Hero is unlocked can i go back to default ROM

Hi,
I went through the long time consuming process in order to unlock my Hero from the Orange UK network. I ended up with a custom rom Default [ROM] Hero 2.1 UPDATE 1.4 [4/12/09]. However im finding this full of bugs. As im new to android i would like to get a stable ROM on there (like the standard Orange one) and was wondering if i put the origional one on there will the phone still be unlocked?
Alternativly if you can suggest any stable ROMS that would be great.
Kusky
HTC HERO
HTC TOUCH HD
can anyone help with this info? would ideally like to sort this tonight
Reason no one replied is because your Q is not clear.
First how did you manage to change from Orange rom to generic, if I understood you, bypassing CID?
first of all this is in the wrong section of the forum, this belongs to q&a not development.
if we we are talking about simlock here it is my understanding that it is independant of the rom, and therefore not changed by a custom or stock rom. i have no experience with this, i'm happily using my hero with the provider selling it here so you might get a second opinion on that.
if you want a fast, stable, rooted custom rom get modaco 3.0.
+1 on MoDaCo's latest ROM - you don't want an original ROM as it will unroot your phone and make it difficult to root it again after it has been applied.
The unlocking only applies to allowing your phone accept SIMs from different providers - that is independent of your ROM. My Telus Hero is unlocked and working on the Rogers network.

Not quite true - the Orange version of 2.73 had a problem when entering unlock codes. Whether this was a bug or by design isn't known, but in order to circumvent it you have to flash a non-Orange ROM to actually unlock.
I would imagine that the phone would remain unlocked if you flashed back to the Orange ROM, as I think it was more of a code entry/saving issue, but I'd add another vote for a MoDaCo ROM.

How do i undo everything?!

Hey there guys. I bought my girlfriend a galaxy s2 off the bay, and its locked to orange. She is on O2, the ebay advert didn't state the phone was locked. Anyway, i have tried everything i could to unlock the phone and had no luck. Even took it to a shop but they had no joy either.
My last chance now is to take it to orange personally and see what they can do but i want to restore it to its original condition first as I initially rooted the phone and installed litening rom on it. So, just wondering, how do i unroot the phone and then put all the original orange branding/rom back on?
Really need your help guys, and really appreciate it

Hey,yeah ive seen that thread and it makes no sense whatsoever!
The thing is, I have tried chainfires unlock app which didn't work, and isn't that app based on that unlock method in the thread you linked? So it prob won't work
So again guys, how do unroot and get all the original orange branding and firmware back on the phone. There must be a way surely?
Really desperate guys
Go and flash a stock rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1113928&highlight=orange

Flashing Orange UK SBF (same as already on the phone)

Hi all,
I'd like to flash the offical Orange UK SBF service onto my Atrix (which is Orange) to restored some deleted system files. Just wondered if there are any any gotchas with this, and if anyone could recommend a specific how-to to follow for this situation? Just looking for any issues I could expect to encounter along the way
Done plenty of stuff on my Hero, so not afraid to get dirty, just need a starting point.
I've unlocked the phone with a code, in case that is important.
Cheers
well ive tried a million times the rom works great using SBF flash back no drawbacks except that webtop does not work
which is a big one for me as i use hd dock all the time!
Hey dude check out this link its the best it solved my softbrick issue
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1125944
The only uk sbf available on this thread is the old one (1.3.1) the latest (I think) is 2.1.1 at least this is the newest sbf I can find. Please correct me if I'm wrong

[Q] can i use flash sbf to downgrade?

I flashed my phone back to stock a while ago not realising i flashed it with tmobile france software then did an OTA upgrade to gingerbread and it stayed as tmobile france, meaning now my phone always thinks im roaming lol
iv found an old tmobile UK sbf file which is the 2.2.2 older software version and im planning to sbf flash it then do another OTA update which will hopefully put me on gingerbread tmobile UK
im just asking to see if this is a a safe thing to do or could i brick my phone by downgrading sbf files etc...? thanks!
NO.
No, nope, nonononononono.
No.
why not? please explain lol i dont want to ruin my phone
LOL no problem. The "One Guaranteed Way in the Whole Wide World" to brick your phone is to SBF flash to an older version than what you're on currently.
Unfortunately I don't have any experience in getting different carrier's firmware; just didn't want to see your phone get screwed in the process.
ah i see thank you, i guess il just leave it and get over the annoying roaming symbol then! haha what would happen if i flashed over it with a UK version of the same software?
I guess my question would be: are you actually being charged for roaming? If so, I might change your title to ask how to get back on UK Tmobile -- someone else might have some better ideas.
nope i dont think i am just get an annoying popup all the time saying im roaming when im not and okay ill try to do that thanks
