A little help needed flashing secure kernel - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have two SGS2s running baseband I9100XXKI1 build number GINERBREAD.XWKI4. Which was updated with Kies
I have debranded both and now are XEU
I have rooted both by flashing XWKDD_insecure.tar then running super on click.
I understand to get rid of yellow triangle I need to flash a secure kernel with odin and this should not effect my root.
Problem I'm having is the supposedly correct kernels i download are ZIP files which extract to zImage.
ODIN only looks for TAR files
Obviously i'm doing something wrong just not sure what?
Please help
Thanks

Where'd you get the secure kernel? Intratech's thread has them all, and they are all zipped, but after you unzip them once, they are tarred. if you unzip the tar file, there will be the zImage file. Did you maybe unzip it one too many times? It seems Winzip sees tar files as valid archives, so maybe you extracted it twice?

theres no need to extract the file.it is TAR by itself.if you extract it you'll get zImage.

[Q] About to flash I9100XWKE7_XEUKD1_XXKE4 but Odin files missing from SamFirmware

Hi,
I want to flash I9100XWKE7_XEUKD1_XXKE4 onto my i9100.
I downloaded this file from samsfirmware.com I9100XWKE7_XEUKD1_XXKE4, but it does not contain any files for Odin. It only has a I9100XWKE7_XEUKD1_XXKE4.tar.
However the instructions on samfirmware state that four files are required:
PIT
CSC
PHONE
PDA
If these are not available on Samfirmware, then where are these found?
Otherwise, I shall just flash the PIT file and the .tar file as PDA/PHONE/CSC and see if it works?
Regards.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
Follow the instructions .
jje
Thank-you. This is far clearer than the Smasung Flash PDF I had.
I have this installed. I shall try some thing sooner but with KE7.
PDA XWKE8
PHONE XXKDJ
CSC EUKD2
Is XXKDJ later or older than XXKE4?
If this is an alphabetical increase then I should think so.
Q1: Actually the guide you referred me to is rather unclear. (But it did help me a lot)
"If the package only contains one .tar archive then it will have everything, pda+phone+csc, in the one file."
Well, yep. This is clear, but it does not state in which part of Odin one puts the .tar file into. Is it:
1) PDA
2) PHONE
3) CSC
Does anyone know? My monies on PDA, but nothing states precisely which one.
Q2: PIT files. I _want_ to wipe everything out and start again. Think of this as a completely fresh install. Why you cry? Because I am trying to reset _everything_ before I return it back to Samsung as a faulty unit. Resetting (or reinstalling) should confirm or deny whether this is a hardware problem or not. Hence the desire to format all the discs and let it do its (presumably) mkfs.ext4 on the whole lot. Of course, it it does an mkfs on all the current disc partitions using the .tar then I don't mind not repartitioning the discs, but just incase. ;P

Put a multi one in PDA.
OK. Flashed it. Thank-you for your help. I think that it now has a recent radio in it than before.
Currently:-
PDA XWKE7
PH XXKE4
CSC XEUD1
Although, I had an FC whilst trying to set-up the APN on stock...
On a side note:
Its nice to see that Samsung still have not mended their APN settings software since the i9000. One still cannot enter APNs of certain configurations. In this case its Virgin Mobile in the UK. ( I am using a roaming SIM [VirginUK] in Holland to check that the 3G problem is limited to Tele2,NL). Funnily I am not alone: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1696824
Even after flashing stock, the 3G works intermittently in the same was as before.
I shall try and see what happens with KE2. Perhaps this phone needs to use the stock KE2 and its associated radio/csc to work correctly. ( I don't really know, but stock worked exceptionally well when I got the phone. It went a wrong after I flashed a custom ROM with KE7 and KE8).

I used Virgin UK on SGS2 no problem on KDD KDH modem and KD1O2U CSC .
Sometimes the UK carphone warehouse csc CPW covers Virgin better than the standard CSC i found on SGS1 .

Since last night I have tried full PDA/CSC/PHONE for KE2 KE7 and now KF1 (with MultiCSC). I think that this is not a phone problem but a change on the either Tele2 NL or T-Mobile networks. (Tele2 being a MVNO).
I never got the Virgin sim working: Unable to set the APN.
I shall start a new thread about this later in order to diagnose the problem.
The stock roms from samfirmware are zipped in a RAR file.
Inside this RAR file there are files labelled .tar.md5
Are we supposed to relabel these .tar.md5 files to .tar?

Do you mean
1) Put the I9100XWF1_OLBKE5_DXKF1.rar file into ODIN PDA and flash? But this is a rar file!
or
2) MODEM_I9100DXKF1_REV_02_CL1017685.tar.md5 directly into modem, PDA to PDA and CSC to CSC?
ODIN recognizes .tar.md5 files?

Rooting a samsung galaxy s2

im trying to unlock it to all networks but first got to root it, now downloaded the files and tried to get the correct insecure kernal but cant find the exact one (i9100bvkh1), now when i try load an insecure kernal i open odin and select pda but the file types (md5,tar,smd) are not the file type that the kernal is so cannot select it. Tried renaming the files without any look.
Can any one help me out here?
Your two main choices are [03.11.2011][CF-Root 4.4] KE*, KF*, KG*, KH1/3/4, KI2/3/4/8, KJ1/2 - su+bb+CWM4] and [30/OCT][ROOTING/UNROOTING] Xperia 2011 Easy Rooting Toolkit [v1.0](zergRush Exploit).
Hard to know where you're getting stuck because I don't know what you downloaded, but assuming you use the first method, as per the instructions, you have to unzip the attachment which leaves you with a .tar file you can flash.
Please, please, please, don't just rename files and try and flash them.
Thanks for the reply mate, do I need the kh2 kernel as it isn't on there?

If you're struggling at this stage, I think you should consider stopping what you're doing and walking away before you destroy your phone.
Sorry ignore me made a mistake it is the kh2 where do I get this kernel from can only see 1,3,4 etc
Not being funny make but usually things like this are easy but just confusing me as It isn't a file type come not hard to open a file up in a program but can't if it don't show
Right the kernel isbvkh2 and android version is 2.3.3 which kernel should i download?

Rename bml4 to amms and tar it with tar -c command.
Vaguely related to this, but only because I don't want to start yet another N00b thread. I can't find my (exact) firmware on Sammobile, so I was wondering how I could package it up to give it to Sammobile for them to redistribute.
I had/have a similar circumstance.
I was looking for my firmware on Sammobile, but I couldn't see the one for my country. So I requested my firmware as it shows up on KIES, it was the Vodafone NZ most recent 2.3.5 update for the SGA. Something like KS9 KP5 KS3.
Someone pm'd me with a .rar download called GT-S5830_VNZ_S5830XWKS9_S5830VNZKP5_S5830XWKS3.rar
Within the file there is a .tar.md5 file, that I'm not sure what to do with.

It's a one package file .
.tar.md5 is just a normal tar file , except that there's something going on with the headers (as what 7-zip claims)
Herpderp Adreno + Tegra.

Just download this CF-root file for KK1: http://download.chainfire.eu/66/CF-Root/SGN/CF-Root-SGN_ZS_MUL_KK1-v5.0-CWM5.zip
And then put your phone into download mode and flash that CF-root file using Odin. It should boot up after. Don't worry.
As long as you don't flash a pit file and you don't tick repartition, we can still save it easily.

Better you flash a stock now,
go to sammobile.com and find a suitable stock firmware and also download Odin flash guide from the same site and read carefully and flash.
then you find Matching CF-root kernel
thanks god with unsecure kernel and odin my phone is back again,
i was so pissed tried so many methods, even downloaded from samsfirmware the stock custom rom and it only gave me one md5 file...
so, thank you very much, reading helps a lot, now i know how to brick my phone with the unuseful cfroot kk1 5.0 version... speedmod kk1 version doesnt works too.

[Q] Help Please....Kernels in wrong format for Odin

Hi Guys
Im currently using the galaxy s2 I9100 and am trying my damdest to root my phone via the info in the following forum:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1125414
I understand the instructions and have downloaded the necessary tools to proceed.......But everytime i download the relevant Kernal and try and find it via the PDA button in Odin. It doesn't recongise it in *.tar, *.md5 or *.smd format.
Ive unzipped and extracted the files via Winzip and now J Zip, but yet im still getting the same problem of Odin not picking it up.
It's proberley an easy fix and im just doing something blatenly easy......completely wrong
Any help or advice would be much appreciated.
Cheers!

Hi!
I just tried with the XXLQ7 kernel, and it worked for me. did you enter the password when extracting the zip?
anyway: there are easier ways to root than this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20075898&postcount=8
these kernels are prerooted and come with SuperUser App, BusyBox support and CWM*. And you don't need to use that "Samsung Quick Root" thingie. just flash the kernel in odin, the same way the other guide explained. (sidenote: afaik it doesn't have to be the exact same kernel (e.g. XXLQ7 or whatever) but only the same android version. no ICS kernel on GB rom but else you should be fine. if possible use one with v5.5 or 5.6)
if you really can't get odin to work (I guess you are using v.1.85), search for it on google, and use the newest version. (mine is 3.04, maybe there's a newer one alerady.) I've never heard of that problem, but one never knows.
*an app, very handy for backups!
