anyone else who applied the new update notice that the static and crackling over the headphone jack is gone?

Tentative yes. The first thing I did after the update was check by listening to a classical song, and also playing it with the volume turned all the way down.
I'm a little paranoid that it might just be my ears deceiving me, or a temporary reprieve, so I'll give it a little longer to prove itself.
Same thing happened to me, I guess a lot of people are experiencing the same issue. Htc says they are working on an update to fix it. I'm just going to return mine and hope for the best.
Oops didn't read the first post all the way...N/M what I said

Yeah some other people are confirming that the hissing/static noise is gone. Wonder if it's cause of the radio update.
Mine still has the problem. Loud hissing in left ear bud but goes away kind of if I roll back and forth in my chair and create static. Also when the button back lite comes on there is a constant high pitch sound until it turns off. The update did not fix mine ><'
Several people in the original Audio Whining/Squealing thread have reported a drastic improvement after the OTA.

I think we can call this one fixed!
Temp Rezound high pitched whine solution
Not sure if this has been brought up as a "temp" solution, but wanted to share as it’s made my Rezound much better. I saw this on the HTC Community forums by James on 01/18/12. I am not affiliated with the app in any way.
On my Rezound (stock), the static was fixed with the last OTA update, but I still had the high pitched whine when the screen was on (and sometimes a little bit after it went off). Downloaded the app the guy mentioned and I don't get the whine anymore. No more back-lit buttons while it’s enabled, but the sound is great again. Hopefully HTC will have a fix for what seems like interference from the buttons being lit. FYI – The shortcut on the screen acts like a toggle after the initial setup, so it’s easy to enable/disable.

“I noticed that the phone would have that "whine / hiss" sound every time the capacitive buttons would light up, and the sound would go away after they turned off.. So I got an app of the marketplace called "Screen Filter" and using this app allowed me to turn off the soft-key backlight function at all times.
For me this has eliminated the high pitched whine noise that was pouring into my left ear, however there is still a pop sound when the audio is first turned on for applications or videos.”
I'm on the Leal ruu and I still notice it just as much as before.

I still get hissing and static when I plug into certain stereo systems. Like the one in my car. Playing music is fine, but if I pause, it makes this awful clicking/static/hissing noise. When I resume playing, it is fine. But it only does it in my car and my home theater system. My room and every other system is great.

Just noticed an odd very light whirring noise from my headphones when they are plugged into the Evo 3d and the screen is updating.
For example when i turn the screen on and the weather animation on my lock-screen runs, it makes the whirring noise, but when I am on a static home screen it is quiet, but then if i swipe to move to the next screen i hear the light noise again. Same if click on the launcher button to open the app drawer, or click on the phone button on the screen and it opens the dialer.
Wondering if this is a common issue/bug, or if I have a defective unit i need to exchange.
The headphones work perfectly fine in my old phone so it isn't the headphones.

I had headphones on for about 40 minutes yesterday morning and didn't notice anything like that at all. Have you tried a different set of headphones?....just to pinpoint in fact that it's a problem with your phone.
I see what you are talking about. The noise is really faint, but I'd say not to worry about it since it may be software related. When browsing apps and what not the sound is gone.

Damn......just put my headphones on again and still nothing like that. Either my phone's not afflicted or my ears are worse then I thought after to many years working in a factory.
I can hear it too, when I scroll I can clearly hear it. This isn't anything new, I've noticed this sort of thing from other devices. Certain laptops will make a tiny squeal when rapidly scrolling something on the screen with the volume jacked up. We're probably hearing added EMI from the increase in CPU activity. Not much you can do about it. :/
The original Evo used to always make this annoying warbling noise during silence. At times it honestly sounded like faint music almost, it was that pronounced.

Yep, that's a fact of life, when it comes to electronic devices. When it puts out enough power, it'll interfere with the headphones (Which, if you think about it, headphones are just a giant magnifier for electronic pulses. Makes sense)
If you don't believe me, hook up an aux cable to your car stereo, and pinch the end. It'll make a buzzing noise. You're electrically charged enough to play music!
Same thing for the internals of your phone. Doesn't take much. Heck, you could probably set your phone next to an MP3 player that you have your headphones plugged into, and still get some interference.
Thanks for confirming that you can hear it too.
I know what you all are saying about electronics having some EMI, but i went back and compared it to my original Evo, and a friend's iPhone 3GS, and neither of the two gave any background noise because the screen was changing/scrolling etc.
Gotta decide if I want to return it. I love the phone's speed, features etc., and this is definitely a minor thing I am bringing up, but it just bugs me a little.
I also have this noise problem, noticed it right away. I also have a slight cracking sound from the speaker when a loud sound plays. It's odd because normally other devices are able to be placed at max volume without hearing distortion. I'm not ready to return it yet, my roomate got one this morning, and I want to see if his does the same.
My Evo did the same thing, especially worse when I had it plugged in.
Same effect on my phone. I just noticed
last night and thought I was hearing things.
I noticed this right away on my 3D. I never noticed any similar sound on my EVO 4G.
Thankfully, it seems to disappear when I am not interacting with the phone. Therefore, it's not a huge issue for me.
Sent the following email to HTC and here's the thread that follows, thought some people might be interested in this:
My Rezound is having a weird high pitched whining sound in the background whenever the capacitive buttons are lit up on the bottom of my phone. So if I'm outdoors in a sunny area, I have no problems, but if I'm using the phone in the dark, I have to turn off the screen (which turns off the lights on the capacitive buttons), and then the whining goes away, but obviously this doesn't solve the problem if I need to use the screen. Is there any way to turn off the lights on the capacitive buttons using a menu option or something? Also, have there been a lot of reports of this whining noise in the background?
Thanks!
(I found out how to resolve the issue, I installed a custom ROM that allows me to change the brightness of the capacitive buttons, and the problem has gone away).
HTC-
Thank you for your response. I am glad to hear that you resolved this issue, however it is unfortunate that it took you a custom ROM to do so. I can confirm Mike that HTC has identified the issue of the high pitched noise on the HTC Rezound as a software issue that will be corrected with the next update. This issue is presently being investigated and our developers are working hard at creating a maintenance release for this device. Because you now have a custom ROM you will not receive a direct notification when the FOTA (forced over the air) update gets released. When the update is made available Mike, you can check our web site at HTC from time to time to see if it has been released as a manual update for your phone, should you want to return to the stock OS. The backlight of the keys is also something that some of our users have asked about. I will pass along your feedback on this issue to our developers, and it's possible that in future updates there may be an option to disable the backlight manually using a menu option. It's definitely a good idea, so I hope that this becomes a standard feature in future models from HTC. If you need additional information on the Rezound, you may wish to check your user manual from HTC . Please use the binocular icon on the left side of the manual to enter key words. Using this method helps you to locate all references to the topic you are researching. I deeply regret any inconvenience this may have caused, and I hope that your custom ROM allows you to continue to use and enjoy your HTC Rezound to its full potential. Please don't hesitate to contact us again with your technical questions or for issues you may have with your phone. We are here between 6am and 1am EST, 7 days a week for your convenience.

I don't think it's unfortunate I had to use a custom ROM to solve the problem, but I understand what you mean by that. I still hear the noise when the screen comes on or goes off, but at least it isn't constant now. I'm glad to know that HTC is aware of the issue though and is rolling out a fix in the next update (which I'm hoping will be the official Ice Cream Sandwich update). Also, being able to control the backlight on the capacitive buttons is really awesome, even if it wasn't the solution to removing the high pitched noise. It's great when I'm watching Netflix at night in bed and I don't want the lights to distract me from what I'm watching, I just put it on the "dim" setting. I am extremely happy with my Rezound, I'm really hoping that Google allows HTC to make the next Nexus phone, because I know you guys would make something awesome (unlike the current Galaxy Nexus which has a sub-par camera, non-removable SD card, and cheaper construction in comparison to the Rezound). HTC has won a long time customer, I can't wait to see what you guys do next!

Thank you for your feedback. I am glad to hear that you are happy with the solution you found, and that the new Ice Cream Sandwich features are proving to be useful on your Rezound. I have only had a brief look at ICS on the HTC Vivid, and I like what I've seen so far. Overall the improvements seem very user friendly. I am also hopeful that ICS will be the next update pushed for the HTC Rezound as many of our devoted fans are anxiously awaiting this software upgrade. Like you, I hope that HTC will again partner with Google for the Nexus line. The original Nexus One, though not as new as the Galaxy, continues to be a fan favorite among many HTC and android enthusiasts. In closing, I would like to invite you to participate in a customer satisfaction survey about your experience with HTC Technical Support. You will need to close your ticket with me and you should receive a pop-up asking if you would like to take the survey. To do this, please log in to our ContactUs site at HTC website with your email address and ticket number XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX and select "Close" next to "Action" to close out the ticket. Then a pop-up should appear asking you to take part in a survey. You can also add any feedback about your experience contacting us in Question 8 on the survey, or even submit product suggestions. HTC is always interested in hearing from users as to what they may be looking for in the next generation of HTC android phones. Thank you again for your interest in HTC! It's always nice to hear positive feedback from our customers.
My squealing sound only happens when I have an audio cable connected from my rezound to my car's headunit and when I have the USB cable connected to my phone. It doesn't seem to matter if I'm using the official car charger or using a standard USB cable to charge via a USB port on my headunit. IIRC it happened on GB and it also happens on ICS :-/ I think it's actually the issue of the audio cable being crappy because I don't notice it while using headphones.
That's crazy I haven't heard of anyone getting a reply fron htc before that's sweet man. Although there emails were about when the ics update would be out or how and they were they went getting one (evo4g) lol

That is a seperate issue that is caused by your cars electrical system. I have both issues and I believe they are due to the same problem from different sources. Both are ground interference/feedback, one from the car, the other from the phone itself. This phone just seems to be really sensitive to interference. Thank god it goes away in both cases when the music/audio starts playing or it would have to be returned.
Rep was so friendly lol.... Now if we can get others to be the same
Yes, I noticed I get an extreme amount of alternator whine when charging in the car and have the phone plugged into the aux input of the radio. It's like they forgot to put ground filters in the audio circuit.

mine went from whining, which I tolerated, to much much worse sounds. Crackle, pop, L/R channels intermittently cutting out, etc. If I even touched the plug on the phone side, crackle city. It's almost like the audio input jack has a loose connection to the board. Anyway, Verizon was super cool about it. Called, explained I've tried the usual software fixes (updates, factory reset, etc) since I know they'd want me to try that first...(which I have, multiple times, for different reasons). Less than 5 minutes on the phone today, and an hour later I had a FedEx tracking number showing it'll be here tomorrow.
I've always been super impressed with Verizon's replacement policies. They've never done me wrong.
I love how you told HTC ur running a custom rom.
Also my phone has no audio problems like you guys mentioned but when I plug my beats into my beats computer too loud gives me a little static noise at of left ear bud.

Well I figured since they now actually support unlocking their phones on their website they KNOW that people running custom ROMs. I probably would have mentioned it anyway though.

That's good info for those still on stock, maybe you can contact the developer of the app and ask them to add an option to change the backlight from off to dim instead, it works great for me on CleanROM. Or you can just unlock, root, and install CleanROM
I noticed last night while using my phone in my quiet room that I too have the faint pop 3 seconds after a sound plays. I've found several threads on here and elsewhere relating to the HTC One and other phones having the same issue. It appears to be an OS issue rather than a specific phone or hardware issue. Some have explained that it's the amplifier shutting off after the sound has played. It's not a dealbreaker and definitely a first world problem, but this is my first Android phone after using only iPhones for the last 5 years and it is very annoying when you hear it and cant get rid of it. I also noticed this happens even if I have the sound completely off! Is this a fixable thing by google or a clever patcher?
Wow... I had never noticed this and if it weren't for this thread I probably wouldn't have. After a sound plays, it sounds like there is a sort of "static" (for lack of a better term) that plays until something shuts off. It's like on the old cassette players - the difference between the end of a tape that's playing versus having the player turned off. Weird. I really don't know what to make of it.

It happens without beats and HTC are aware of it.

I've had my M8 for about a day now and I'm very happy with it. I really love how you can now set up the volume rocker as a shutter button...finally!
Unfortunately my phone has an issue where the top speaker crackles in two situations, both when the volume is at the max setting. The first situation is when placing an outgoing call the top speaker crackles with every ring. Not too bad a situation by itself. But that top speaker also crackles along with peoples' voices. No other issues when listening to music either via Google Music or Pandora. I even tried to install an equalizer app to tone down the mid range but the crackles persist.
Hopefully this is the only phone with this issue but I did want to share this with the community. I'm heading to an AT&T store later today to exchange it for another unit.
You are not alone. I bought two brand new phones (ATT Version) in ebay. Both had the same issues. I am in the process of returning them. When you dont have proper reception of the voice call, the unwanted noise gets amplified. The phone does not have proper noise filter. My ear pains sometime. When this phone cannot be used as a basic phone, then I dont want to waste my money. Apart from that, this phone has lot of other issues like bluetooth, sluggish sometime, battery, intermittent touch response issues, etc.... mentioned in the various forums in the internet.
The sound quality on the bottom speaker and the external look are the ones worth mentioning which stand outs from other phones. My experience with HTC One M8 is very bad and I am not going to get another HTC product.
I bought mine three days ago and I notice a little bit of crackling as well. It happens when the volume is at max is not a strong cracklings but I can hear it, should I go to at&t to get a replacement?

Unlocked my white 32GB after 300 MB download. No issues.
Installed a few apps, nothing special yet, no system related apps.
This afternoon my N9 started ticking from the bottom speaker each time I touch the glass. Just unlocking via pattern does it also.
About 12-15 very quick clicks like a speaker wire is shortening out.
Any hope before I call in a RMA?

How loud are these clicks?
It isn't unusual to get quiet clicks and buzzes when using a device, the Nexus 4 for example is a famous for it, it constantly makes a noise if you put your ear to it even when it is sleeping.
The CPU and other components are awake shy. They spend a large amount of time in sleep mode, perhaps coming on for a millilsecond then going off for several milliseconds, then back on at the next touch where it needs to display a nice graphic or do something, then off again. Everytime the CPU switches on, so does a lot of electrical circuitry to drive the power requirements. Currents switching on and off flowing through wires creates noise, either audible directly, like the hum from a kettle or a buzz from a power supply, or via electrical noise that is picked up by other circuits, for example the amplifier for the sound, which then makes it audible. Almost every electronic device if you put your ear to it makes a noise and buzzes, often changing in tone when you make it do something.
So I would say if it is very quiet, only audible in a quiet room when near to the tablet, it's is probably just normal operating noise. You might find a replacement is quieter, or you may find it is louder. You may find someone else can't hear it at all, if you are young you are more likely to hear these things than someone who is older as we lose high frequency hearing as we get older, and listening to loud music in headphones makes it happen quicker
Of course if it is pretty loud, audible all the time and annoying, certainly go for a replacement.
Regards
Phil
Just wanna make sure, but you are not talking about the button touch sound on Android 5.0 are you? The sound has been changed to a very swooshing sound that almost sounds like static on an audio line.
Thank you guys for your input.
The sounds I observed were loud, not the near silent hum kind. More like a finger nail is hitting a window.
The sound got progressively louder during my trouble shooting.
It ended up in a total distorted, muffled tone coming from the bottom speaker.
Something inside shortened out.
I had a micro-Tesla conductivity meter this morning at my bench and I could see that by touching the screen even at the top it induced a small current directly at the bottom speaker.
I called an RMA and the N9 was declared DOA.
Replacement is in the mail.

When you called what did you tell them? Where did you get it from? I got mine from best buy, and have this same problem. I think I'm going to wait until its closer to my 14 day period... Maybe I'll get a second batch device.

Not me. The ticking sound was the first thing I listened for when was testing out the speakers. I didn't hear anything out of the ordinary.
Took me awhile to be sure though cuz the song i used to test actually did have occasional ticks in it. I had to relisten to it on my headphones and on my home theather system to be sure it was just the song and it was.

I told them just my findings. Repeated click sounds by touching screen from a single speaker. This was a direct Google order and they sent a replacement within 24 h's. No questions asked.
The new White N9 is perfect. No unusual click sounds. In addition to that, there is a little less light bleed and from the few hours I used it so far I get the feeling that the battery is lasting a good bit longer. The first N9 went from 100% to about 40% within 3 h's of trouble shooting, the replacement is still at 75% after I unlocked & rooted and put back all my files, about 2.5 h#s screen-on-time. Makes sense, since the constant shortening out the speaker uses electricity.
The serial number difference of the last 4 numbers is a 44 higher count number, so I believe its the same batch/lot.
Overall, a quick and painless exchange and Google's RMA process is one of the fastest and easiest I have gone through.
