I am having a strange issue with restoring a nandroid backup. It started on TWRP V2.0 so I went gone back to V1.1.1 and it is still happening.
When I try to restore a nandroid and after the reboot completes for some reason I have to re-set up everything like a fresh install. Here is what I have checked when I make a back up: system, data, boot, recovery, wimax, .android_secure and compress. Also just to clarify, should I do a full factory reset or just wipe cache/dalvik?
Thanks for any insight as it has me stumped.
If you're restoring a sense ROM with a LOT of apps on the SD it (sense) doesn't seem to play nice. I've had success restoring system and boot, botting, then restoring just data. YMMV. Make sure you're not also restoring cache, and of course wiping properly first.

Thanks il Duce. I don't have any apps on SD. I did a fresh backup with just system and boot checked and still have issues with it not working correctly. Every time I restore a backup it keeps putting me back to having to set everything up again.
I am not sure what is going on, but can't seem to figure out how to fix.
If u are hboot 1.5 S-On Unlocked, keep in mind you may have problems restoring Nandroid (recovery) backups, ie boot.img/kernel, if you don't use fastboot to enter recovery first ( fastboot boot YourRecoveryFilename.img ) .
I had some similar issues (see link in my signature for specifics & walkthru). The new Cwm Touch 5.img file loaded up for me. Cwm v4.0.1.4 & TWRP2.0 were the only others that would work on mine.
I had a few posts in this other thread that might help too...

Tottally agreed.
I would suggest installing the Rom you want and just restoring data if your data will be compatible with the Rom you have if you have hboot 1.5

ok guys, here we are again.. you're wanting to backup your phone for if you want to try a test rom, or just to have a backup in case something goes wrong. this tut will show you how! I will also explain how to restore your phone to a backup you've previously made. it is also possible to backup/restore using rom manager but this is the harder way.. not too hard once you figure it out, but thats all opinion
Pre Requirements:
1.) be rooted
2.) have clockwork recovery installed
3.) not a necessity, but it DEFINITELY helps to have the engineering build installed at least once
BACKUP STEPS:
1.) boot into clockwork recovery mode
2.) scroll down to nandroid and select
3.) click backup
4.) it will now automatically backup your ENTIRE PHONE.. this includes your contacts, messages, emails, everything you have on the phone prior to booting into recovery. you will see a yellow bar at the bottom that shows progress
5.) REBOOT!
6.) there is no step 6... you're done
RESTORE STEPS:
1.)boot into clockwork recovery mode
2.) scroll down to nandroid and select
3.) scroll down to restore and select
4.) scroll to your desired restore nandroid and select
5.) scroll to yes and select
6.) it will now auto restore your backup and everything in it. when done it will tell you DONE!
7.) reboot and you're done!
well there ya go guys, one (two?) more tut(s) done and have fun be safe and remember to wipe if you're ever scared you have a boot loop
I actually do have a specific question about these nandroid backups. If I backup, then flash a "updated" ROM (update to an existing one already installed), and THEN do a restore, does the restore take me back to the previous version of the ROM? I've never used the nandroid backups as I usually never have a need to.
the restore takes your phone back to exactly how it was when you performed the backup
Gotcha, so if you backup, wipe, and then update a ROM, you cannot expect to be able to use your nandroid backup to restore anything you had previously, unless you wanted to go back to the ROMs previous version... gotcha.
where are these backups stored?
I think it's /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/[BackupDate]/
is it safe to remove them from the sdcard & store for safekeeping until needed & replace in same location?
yep, sure is!
Is it necessary to perform a wipe before restoring, if you currently have a different ROM than what is being restored? Or does nandroid wipe for you?

no, nandroid doesnt wipe for you. i suggest always wiping if you're changing roms
hi im kinda new to this, but I rooted my slide using the tuts from droiddog.com and here. Got mostly everything working but when I try to backup my current rom clockwork crashes and it doesn't take me to recovery and just reboots the phone. Ive tried clearing the download cashe and downloading an older recovery but nothing seems to work. I basically cant boot into recovery to make backups or flash any roms. any suggestions on what else I could try.
I gave this explination of a nandroid to a friend of mine today. It will act like a time machine and put your device back exactly as it was when you did the backup. Now if you need an explination like that, you realy should not be messing with your phone that way.

hi
i have a problem. when i try to restore my backup. everything looks fine. but when restoring finish and reboot my phone screen is freezing on htc logo. what can i do?
sorry for my bad english!
Just wait it takes a while to boot sometimes, treat it like you would treat a new ROM being flashed.
i need to wipe data/factory reset or?
ok
i wipe data.. restore backup from nandroid.. reboot phone and i waiting almost 30 min and screen still show only htc logo..
I have copied the nandroid backups on my SD card
but in recovery mode, it is not showing any nandroid backup file ?

Hello,
I have a question about Nandroid backups using CWM...I read on some forum that...the backup and the installed version of CWM recovery should match to make it work..I.e If I took the backup using CWM version 5.0.0.0 I have to use the same CWM recovery version to restore the ROM and I can not restore nandroid backup using the later version lets say 5.0.1.5 of CWM...is it true?
Thanks..
I kinda doubt that. Itd be much more likely that a nandroid created by 5.0 couldnt be used by an earlier version. I doubt that is true either, just more likely than the other way around.
Nothing wrong with waiting for better confirmation than mine, but if it were an issue I think wed have heard a lot more about it by now.

Hi Guys,
First post here.
I've started installing VillainRom 1.4 following the instructions contained in the official thread in the Dev Forum.
However, having selected to flash the zip file in CWM and watched the installation process start, my screen has now been displaying the blinking VillainRom logo for about 45 minutes. Is this normal or has something gone wrong?!
I plugged the phone into the mains right after the logo first showed up. Would this have made a difference?
Many thanks in advance.
If your coming from a stock ROM you need to perform a full wipe in CWM before flashing.
Look through the options in recovery, wipe your data then reflash the ROM for good measure.
All should be fine....
OK, great, thanks.
So should I just turn it off, boot in recovery and look for the wipe option, wipe the phone, then restart the installation process?
Yep, boot into recovery then select;
"Wipe Data/Factory Reset"
"Wipe Cache Partition"
"Advanced>Wipe Dalvik Cache"
Then flash the rom again.(This step may not be required, but it cant hurt).
Fantastic, thanks for your help. Very much appreciated!
One further question.
I've got VillainRom successfully installed now, but when I attempt to restore the apps and data that I backed up using Titanium Backup my phone reverts to it's pre-Villain state.
Is there anyway to restore my data but keep VillainRom? Am I being completely dense?!
Thanks

That sounds strange. Titanium backup in itself cannot "revert" you to the previous ROM. That's not possible
What do you mean by its pre-villain state by the way?
When I move between different editions of the ROM, I do a titanium backup via the app. I then reinstall the ROM, and select some apps to restore. I am still running the same ROM (confirm via Menu > settings > about, and scroll to the bottom. It should show as VillainROM 1.4.0.
Thanks for your reply.
By pre-villain state I mean the stock firmware that came with the phone. I looked at the settings and it put me back onto the original firmware.
This was also confirmed because after installing VillainRom, restoring and then installing VillainTweaks, VTweaks told me it couldn't function because VillainRom wasn't installed.
From your reply I think the mistake I might have made was to restore from CWM rather than re-downloading Titanium Backup and restoring through that. Would that be correct?
PHone is rooted 1.5, with CleanROM 2.7. I haven't had issues with the phone until today when I decided to reboot the phone and it got stuck at the first white screen with the green HTC logo. I went to recovery, did a nandroid backup, then did a complete wipe and the phone booted up fine, but i'm missing all my data. I tried to nandroid restore just the [data] portion and no system, boot, etc stuff but it'll just get stuck again. seems like that "state" of the phone is borked or something?
no solutions? :/
I would say that something in your data portion of you nandroid is keeping it from booting.. I would just give up on the data, if that's the reason it wont boot it may be more trouble than its worth. I just use TiBu and it works great. if your using cwm recovery version 5.x.x.x TiBu will let you restore straight from your backup, so you could at least get some stuff back.
Did you wipe cache and dalvik after you restore before your initial boot?
I would start fresh, make a fresh nandroid and just go from there, did you switch recoveries?

Happened to me too... I ended up Copying everything to my computer then Deleting my Sdcard, then Copied everything back and was able to Fix the Problem!
i just gave up, i ended up just starting fresh again and now that i've set everything up, made a nandroid backup. i'll look into CWM and Titanium Backup, i'm currently using TWRP.
I was using twrp but switched back to cwm just cause titanium now allows u to restore data and stuff from an cwm .tar file. It's pretty slick and now if I need to I can just open a backup and take portions of it as needed.

I flashed a ROM (InfectedROM) all was working and the phone was up and running until the phone crashed. The phone then went into an endless reboot so I booted into recovery (TWRP) and I restored the nandroid backup I made before I started, but now it goes to the HTC splash with the white background and won't do anything else.
[Edit]
Well I managed to kinda fix the problem. I booted into recovery and selected wipe all data (Factory reset), then I re-flashed InfectedROM and managed to get the phone to boot. Still can't understand why my nandroid backup don't work to make the phone boot.
I would like to revert back to the stock ROM but being able to use my phone is better than not...

Well when you did this did you fastboot boot recovery.img and wipe and then try the nan? Maybe what you need to do.. Also if you make future ones I would fastboot boot recovery.img and then make a nandroid backup..

Does it make a difference if I fastboot boot recovery.img to wipe before I restore my nan backup? To answer you question, no I did not. Here's what I did form the get go:
1) unlocked my bootloader via HTC's unlock method leaving my phone's bootloader unlocked with s-on
2) I after a while decided to try out anther ROM I went with InfectedROM, So I booted into recovery (TWRP) holding the vol down key while pressing the power key and made a nan backup
3) I rebooted my phone using reboot system from TWRP
4) I then rebooted my phone (adb reboot bootloader)
5) I went into fast boot and booted into recovery (fastboot boot recovery.img)
6) I wiped all data then went into install from zip selected the InfectedROM zip on my sdcard
7) Rebooted via recovery's reboot command
Please bear with me while I am a wiz at using the command line in both Linux and Windows I am a noob when it comes to flashing roms and such.

So you are on the latest software? If you want something close to stock just to keep things smooth you could try fresh rom or my rom I did both of these are stock based... If you want just the stock look with stock everything go for the stock rooted copies they have in the dev section..
I never made a nandroid copy of my orignal rom since a ruu will always save you when you have to unroot
Does the nandroid back up cause reboots or a hang... Sometimes it takes a good 3 mins for it to move on depends...
When you made the nan backup were you on the 2.08 software or the 2.17 ? Did you update to the 2.17 after you made a backup in the past?

I am indeed running the latest software. Thank you I will check out your ROM!
My nandroid back backs up and restores fine but after I reboot after doing a restore the phone does not boot, it just stays on the HTC logo with the white screen.
I did not do any updates after I did my nan backup.

the boot.img file you have in your restore set up is invalid... i would try to resave your settings agin and then restore from there...boot.img should write to the boot partition if not through recovery then through manual flashing in fastboot
MeanROM is also pretty nice. It is like FreshRom and CleanRom in the way that it is based around Stock, except that it has some pretty beefy features.
Hello, my phone was running slowly so I decided to go back to a previous backup and run very few apps. I restore a Nandroid backup and when I did the phone told me an update was available, I tried to install it but it just kept restarting to recovery and I had to reboot into System manually and it never applied the update.
Someone told me I needed a stock recovery, I thought Well, since I'm flashing something, why not flash a JB file too? I went and downloaded a JB rom, flashed that and the recovery but it didn't boot (probably because my hboot is 1.20) so I tried a different rom, basically I tried different combinations but somehow nothing seemed to work, and now I can't boot my phone. I've read that you can brick your phone if you wipe the EMMC, I don't remember doing that but I tried so many things that I might have wiped it without noticing. Is there a way to verify the EMMC? I can boot into recovery with fastboot, but when I install any rom, it just doesn't boot, it gets stuck in the first HTC screen with the HTC logo and those red letters I got after rooting (this rom is property of HTC...don't distribute outside without written permission...etc etc).
So, do you think this can be an EMMC problem, or just a kernel problem? I tried flashing the boot.img from my Nandroid backup (actually it was called boot.emmc.win but I renamed it to boot.img following some instructions I found online) but even with the Nandroid backup that worked before the phone would not start.
If this is indeed an EMMC problem, is there a way to fix it?
Thank you very much.
You also restored your nandroid backup from stock? As your hboot is 1.20 (which is quite old btw), you cannot flash JB kernels to boot partition so JB ROMs won't work without a workaround. So try to completely restore your stock nandroid backup or else you could try running a RUU if your CID is compatible.

Yes I read that you need at least hboot 1.25 to flash JB, that's why after flashing JB and seeing it wasn't starting, I tried to go back to my old ICS backup, but none of them work now, I have a Nandroid backup that was working before, here's what I'm trying to do:
1. Flash my old boot.emmc.win changing the name to boot.img and running "fastboot flash boot boot.img"
2. boot into TWRP-2.4.3.0 and do a Factory Reset, followed by a Restore of my backup, which restores System, Data and Boot, and gives me a "Restore Complete - Successful" message.
3. Install SuperSU right before rebooting
4. Reboot
After that the phone just gets stuck on the first HTC screen, the one with the red letters. I don't know much about android, but I think I'm following all the steps correctly, to restore my old Nandroid backup. Or am I doing something wrong?
My CID is ORANG309, I got a 4.0.1 RUU (at least that's what the person said) and I'm going to try to recover that one. It's not a ZIP file, it's a folder with files inside, so i'll probably have to restore it as a normal Nandroid.
Try flashing the system partition as well before restoring your backup.

You mean formatting the /system partition? I try that too, but it doesn't seem to work. Now that I was into TWRP, I saw the Wipe buttons and there is one called "Wipe internal storage" that I might have pressed before, it kinda rings a bell. So assuming I did press it, does that wipe the EMMC? Is there a way to recover it?
I've been trying to flash using Dumlock because it doesn't seem to work from the normal recovery. Here's then what I do.
1. Boot into normal TWRP recovery.
2. Click Advanced -> HTC Dumlock
3. Inside, I click "Reflash recovery" which supposedly reflashes the recovery into boot.
3. Tap "Reboot" and "System". This should reboot into the Recovery in the boot partition, but it gets stuck in a reboot loop.
So I can't boot into the recovery that should be in the boot part. And now when I enter into normal recovery, whenever I restore a Nandroid, right after doing it if I choose "Reboot", it says "No OS Installed!"

Yeah, that doesn't work. I restore the Nandroid and then when I go to reboot, TWRP says "No OS Installed! Are you sure you wish to reboot"
Update: Using my old Nandroid, I tried this:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash userdata data.img
fastboot flash system system.img
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
All of them worked, except for the "data", but the phone does not work. Tried doing the same, then flashing data from inside of TWRP recovery, same thing. Phone is stuck on the HTC screen and it doesn't work.
Any ideas?
Tried Dumlock, but it doesn't seem to be writing the Recovery image to boot. I even went and copied a recovery.img file into "/sdcard/twrp/dumlock/<device>/boot/boot.img" and from the TWRP Dumlock menu, tried to "Restore original boot" to see if Dumlock would assume that "boot.img" was the file to flash into the recovery, but when I restart it's just the HTC screen. I'm using TWRP 2.4, and renamed TWRP 2.6 as "boot.img" because the difference in version number would let me know from where was the recovery being booted, but I can't flash into twrp 2.6, aka the fake boot.img.
Tried downloading some RUUs for Spain, but the recovery process failed.
So is it safe to assume that this phone is bricked? I have S-ON, like all other Desire X devices (I think) so can you brick a phone with S-ON? Is there a way to restore the original stock rom? Or at least a way that I can remove the red letters on the boot animation, the ones that say "This build is for development purposes" so that I can take it to the store and hopefully they won't notice that my bootloader is unlocked and maybe they will fix it under the warranty?
thanks

Take a look at the HTC Desire S forum, this one is just for HTC Desire S. if you don't find it, ask there...
