[Q] Unrooting the Thunderbolt - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone.
Long story short I got a droid razr and my mom got my thunderbolt. For ease of use I want to unroot it for her.
I looked at the stickies and saw there wasnt a method to unroot for my situation.
My phone was rooted with the old auto root method from back in march of 2011. So how do I unroot now?
Thanks.

Ginger unroot app works flawlessly

Ginger unroot app? As in from the market? Where do I get this?
Is there an alternative route where I don't have to pay?

If you don't get the answer, you could just put the rooted version of 605.9 on there for her.

Nowetdio, I saw that, but I didn't use revolutionary, so what can I do?
Classic, but that won't put S-on right? I need it fully unrooted.

Re-read the OP of the link provided, talks about if you rooted "old school". Sounds like your situation

Correct, will still have s-off
Sent from my T-Bolt using Tapatalk

Towards the bottom of the OP there are two RUU's that you need flash separately in hboot. Flash the first file first or you will run into issues. Also rename each file to PG05IMG.zip.
The first file
(PG05IMG_no_hboot_2.11.605.9.zip) will unroot the phone.
The second file (PG05IMG_hboot_ONLY_2.11.605.9.zip) is to get s-on.

Lol I'm confused all of a sudden. S-On is non-root and S-off is root right?
Okay, thanks Classic, I'll just flash the zips nowetdio gave me.
Nowet, I have two questions on that.
1. There's nothing I have to do before flashing those two right?
2. In case something goes wrong can I backup into root?

Make a nandroid (backup) before you start this n you should be good

ok thanks so much

Worked like a charm thanks guys.

Good to hear
Tapatalkn with my T-Bolt

For future reference a nandroid will NOT help you if you are flashing from hboot. Anytime you are going to flash anything from hboot always always check the md5 or risk a brick. If who ever you download the file from hasn't supplied an md5 do yourself a favor and ask for one. Flashing a bad radio file or hboot file is the EASIEST way to make an expensive paper weight. This brick is not the kind that you can recover from by using a nandroid. The average person will not be able unbrick your paper weight.

I can't get these links to work. It says "Failed to Connect to Web Server". I googled "PG05IMG_no_hboot_2.11.605.9.zip" can't get the file from any of the websites.. Does anyone know what's going on?

You cannot downgrade with S-on, flash the MR1
Try to dl the ruu again on your computer. Check the md5sum after its done. Pull the SD card from your phone and user a card reader to put the new file on it (delete the old first obviously) then try again

You should always make sure the checksums match before flashing anything sensitive to your phone.

I tried that. After checking the file The phone went straight to Hboot again. not sure what to do at this point. Yes S-on, I wasn't aware I wasn't supposed to do that. Sorry.

What rom were u on? Are you rooted? What did u do to get stuck in hboot? Did you ever try to get s off?

Hey I had a similar issue with my phone, first question does it give you a error on the Hboot screen saying security error? secondly it sounds like and correct me if I am wrong but it sounds like you probably had root and then used a full signed ruu to downgrade and if you did thats why your stuck at the moment. If that is what you did I am pretty sure you can recover from that so not all is lost. I am unclear on the exact steps your going to need to do to recover because the issue like the previous post says is that you cannot downgrade and if you flashed the mr1 ruu there is no newer version to flash to that is actually signed. Your next step is to go to the forum for thunderbolts in the general section and find the live chat (should be the first sticky), you want to talk to either Jcase or Adrenaline as they are best prepared with the knowledge to recover your device. I hope this helps at least get you pointed in the right direction.

That's exactly what I did. I am getting a pink "security warning" on the Hboot screen as well.
To recap...I was running Tesla 1.7 upgraded to GB then tried downgrading by doing a complete reversion, using the MR1 custom ruu (like in the sticky)...that's where I got stuck. thanks for the help.
Bad download? Do you have a microsd reader? Load a fresh download and try again.

You might just end up with the retail price of a Thunderbolt on your next bill. Really tho they will be able to take one look and see you are running leaked software.
BTW the pink "Locked" at the top of hboot has to do with having HTC's official unlock capabilities built in. You can still root that build easily.

Well I don't know of any root method where the first thing you do is flash an hboot so..... Also the only way I know of for sure to root that build is with Revolutionary but I don't think there is a mac version. Plus it makes it somewhat hard to get back to stock when you use Revolutionary.

***LOCKED*** On Bootloader
Hello All,
First of all thanks for the awesome easy guide !!
This is the first time I am rooting my HTC Tbolt and have had an issue to start with.
Used the instructions in the link below:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1401959
After I download the 2.11.605.5 downgrade zip, I rename it, put in on the SD Card and go to HBOOT and it installs the downgrade just fine.
But at the end of this process, when I try to get the MR4 Radio onto the SD Card and install it, it simply does not happen. HBoot checks for the file, finds it, but nothing happens. I have renamed in properly and followed instructions to the dot.
I also noticed a ***LOCKED*** right on top of the screen and I think this could be an issue.
Can I go ahead and proceed with the Revolutionary Root Technique ? Would this be possible at this point ?
Is there anyway I can get Flash the MR4 Radio before I actually root ?
Also, would I be able to flash the MR4 Radio onto my device after Rooting ?
Any help is much appreciated !
Thanks in advance !
Cheers !

Warranty question

I have just recently had my usb port crap out on me. So I have no way of reverting the traditional way.
Has any one had any issues with returning a phone under warranty that was rooted?
I have a battery charger, but its a pain, and i am sunk for anything i would need to do via usb.

I think he means a battery charger, as in to charge the battery separately. You could try to load the files unto the SD card to get back to Stock and S-On.
My sister returned an Incredible I had rooted for her, while it was stock but S-Off. Don't take my word as gospel though it might vary from agent to agent, how thorough they are.
If you didn't use revolutionary to get s-off, you should be able to get everthing back to stock with the right RUU on the sdcard and flash through h-boot. If you did, you can get everything back to stock except h-boot. You will still have s-off in that case.

I did not use revolutionary.
Any one have the MUU I need to put on it to get it back to stock?
Putting current stock firmware and s-on back onto the phone
download these 2 files:
1) PG05IMG_no_hboot_2.11.605.9.zip
mirror: http://api.viglink.com/api/click?fo...11.605.9.zip&jsonp=vglnk_jsonp_13338108288141
md5: 3e189b6c85ea7da1e26e12a5cd7b1ab0
2) PG05IMG_hboot_ONLY_2.11.605.9.zip
http://api.viglink.com/api/click?fo...rlzh9lrnh0qs&jsonp=vglnk_jsonp_13338109990672
md5: d26b3253358407d459c654e6729a39ca
rename PG05IMG_no_hboot_2.11.605.9.zip to "PG05IMG",move to your sd card, and flash in hboot.
this is important! you must flash the PG05IMG_no_hboot_2.11.605.9.zip first
after successfully flashing that, you will be on unrooted gingerbread with an eng s-off bootloader. delete the PG05IMG file from your sd card. now place the PG05IMG_hboot_ONLY_2.11.605.9.zip on your sd card. check the md5. once youve verified it matches, you can rename PG05IMG and flash it.
again, only flash the hboot file after you have successfully flashed the rom.
now you are 100% stock on latest firmware. unrooted gingerbread 2.11.605.9 with *locked* 1.05.0000 s-on bootloader.
BTW. info pulled from here. This worked for me when I was running a eng bootloader with s-off.
The same thing happened to me. I just returned it to stock using the above info and returned it. I did not have any problems with verizon. I also used revolutionary to get s-off. so return to stock and you should be good.
I hate "me too" posts but me too, it worked for me and it will for the OP as well.
You can download thunderbolt restore from the market and restore it that way. Its an app that will do all the work for you

Thanks every one. this was very helpful.
App worked great. Now, I forget the name of what I used to root my phone, but there has to be a bunch now.
Any suggestions on the best root method?

Completely Stock

Before anyone gets mad, I know this has been posted before. But i just wanted to confirm everything before getting charged $700.
Today a new rezound came in the mail from verizon. I never ordered one, but my old one is scratched a little so whatever. I have to return it completely to stock. It's s-offed and obviously rooted and unlocked. I heard sometimes it reads relocked and sometimes locked. And i think i need it to say locked, right?
A lot of people just say to flash a stock RUU, is that really all I need to do?
Where do i start? Thank you!
mikeyk101 on droidforums says this:
"This is pretty simple. Just download the RUU for gingerbread and you can find it here: http://goo.im/stock/vigor/ruu You can either download the 2.01.606.11 zip or exe file. If you download the exe, you have to run it on your computer with the phone conected by a data cable. If you use the zip version, put that on your SD card, rename it PH98IMG.zip, restart the phone in bootloader, and let hboot install it. Once that is done, you will be back to fully stock with the exception of the S-off. To make it S-on again, you have to once again go back into bootloader but before you do, delete that PH98IMG.zip file. Then get into fastboot. Make sure that the phone is connected again to your computer by data cable. Hopefully you have a folder on your computer that has adb commands and fastboot. Open up a dos window and CD to the folder where you have the adb, fastboot, etc. Then run the following command: fastboot oem writesecureflag 3 That should be all that is needed. Then you will have a fully stock S-on phone."
Is that correct?
It's correct.. even then, they really don't care about root/unlocked bootloaders.

After it is rooted and s-offed, you can simply restore your old backup and be right back where you were before you changed phones.
This I a good question, I am planning on returning my rezound for another one since I'm starting to see dead pixels everywhere. Saves me the time to look it up. Thanks

now you are 100% stock on latest firmware. unrooted gingerbread 2.11.605.19 with *locked* 1.05.0000 s-on bootloader.
