[Q] Atrix and lapdock for college? - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey XDA, it's been a while,
I need a new phone and was considering buying the Atrix and a lapdock for taking notes during lectures. I thought this would be a good idea considering how portable the lapdock is and how many books are in my bag. I already have a beast Core i7 system at home so that's where I would be typing essays, doing research, etc. But for lectures all I really need is some sort of word processing app.
I've been reading mixed things about tethering and lapdock usage though and I don't know that I fully understand what is going on. My phone plan currently does not have any data at all and I am not interested in tethering, just wifi use now and then. Also, I am on T-Mobile.
So my questions are:
-Is this a good choice for portable, note taking?
-Do I need some sort of data plan or AT&T specific tethering plan in order for me to use this at all?
-Can I still use this if I unlock it to T-Mobile?

Oh, and thanks in advance!

Sure, this would be decent option - just keep it in airplane mode and turn on wifi manually when you have access.
Use any of the word processing/not taking apps and you could even record the audio of the speaker/prof to review later.
Get you a decent sized SD card to store that audio though!
Good luck and NEVER stop learning.

I may be wrong, but i thought the apps for webtop were web based? So if you don't at least have wifi in the class you won't be able to take notes. At least that's what I think, I dont have a lapdock so I'm not sure. But if I am, you could always download a note taking app on the phone and the just access the phone screen from the lapdock and take notes in the app. Hope I helped!

No, not necessarily, but you could mod webtop following some of the guides and get you openoffice.
However, you can use the mobile view and use one of the Android note taking apps fullscreen.

Words of wisdom!!!
Thanks for the the feedback, everyone. It's sounding like this might be a great way to go. I was looking at specs and carrying this thing around will be so much better than lugging my 16" cinderblock laptop around in my backpack.
So is webtop an app that is installed on the Atrix itself or is it an "OS" that is built into the lapdock? This is sort of confusing because isn't the lapdock essentially just a screen and keyboard, for the mobile device, without a CPU, GPU, memory, etc?
Also, does the "mobile view" just stretch the tiny screen onto the larger screen or does it actually take advantage of the increased screen size? Hopefully that question makes sense.
Even if I can't use webtop or webtop apps without a web connection, it's sounding like (thanks to xda devs) there is still a lot of functionality in this system. At home I've been dual booting Windows and Ubuntu for ages now so I'm a huge fan of Open Office so that's great news for me.

+1 here too. Took the words right out of my mouth. I will add that it makes my bookbag lighter for carrying around my stuff for college. I actually like all the looks I get when i use it since its not the common. People make the best comments ever.

true the apps are web based but when you open quick office or quick office pro you can use it to take notes and stuff you dont need internet. Also you can save this and edit it and polish it up at home on your pc.

I recommend you mod your webtop to a full Ubuntu jaunty installation with xfce4. Like that you will have to stop wandering what it does, because it'll do nearly everything you would expect a laptop to do. I don't know how into modding you are, but check these forums, plenty of info out there

Can you do that?! Modding isn't an issue for me. Especially since most of the guides on XDA are pretty much idiot proof. But won't Ubuntu run slowly? Is it even stable?
I'm still not sure how the webtop app works. Is it built into the lapdock or the Atrix?

All my remaining questions about the webtop app and the lapdock have been answered by the google. Thanks to everyone for their replies!

So i just got my gTab and have been working away to make it comftorable and easy to use (and not not modded yet) and have everything for the most part working. but now that i have all this screen realestate i am wondering what to put where!!! i have the widgets and frequently used stuff on the main desktop but now i have 4 other screens with preety much nothing on them.. so i need ideas. I am a tech minded kind of guy and plan on using it for research, ereading, trip planning (for motorcycle trips of course), gaming, basicly a desktop replacement. so i need ideas!! so this thread is for posting your desktops (widgets, programs, and whatnot). As soon as i figure out how ill get mine posted .... the tablet desktop is MUCH bigger than the android phone.. so wow me please!!!!

Heavy Tether Users, please confirm.

What's your highest GB (data) usage in a month and has there been any drawbacks? Looking for throttling thresholds, random radio/connectivity drops, or actual examples of other potential risks. Please only actual use cases not hypotheticals of actual rooted tethering (non-paying). Use Wireless Tether.

So you don't want our input if we're rooted and using free tethering? They would throttle a 20gb/month video watcher the same as a 20gb/month tetherer.
And if I'm wrong in my assumption, then I can tell you my wife uses about 300-550mb per night playing Rift through my OpenGarden tether. Monthly, I would guess it averages about 6300mb usage, not including the random times I allow people to connect while waiting in school lines to pick up kids and at neighborhood parties (my friends are starting to loath AT&T).

Thanks for allowing me to clarify, at this point, I'll certainly take all the input I can get but recently I started using tether pretty heavily due to photography for my kids sports and also acquiring an ipad. I finished last month with just under 8GB, to the point the MyVerizon both online and in the app still reads as being around 8GB even tho my cycle was supposed to reset 2 days ago. Because I went over 5GB or maybe even 6 or 7 of the 8 total GB I used last month were more than likely in the past week or so, I have a feeling my understanding of throttling is off. I have had my data conectivity be super shotty and in some cases, downloads and uploads are failing entirely.
We can obviously all speculate on whether they can see Wireless Tether (cheated, not paying) and such, but the usage doesn't lie. Hoping to speak to other users that actually use it heavily and their experiences as for how throttling works and if they experience any other subtle things to be aware of, that's all. Way more long winded than it needed to be, my bad on the novel.
I cleared 25 gig last month. No signs of throttling so far as I can tell.
Damn, 25GB, no ****... what are you streaming/tethering if I may ask, an xbox360/ps3?

I watched about 5 seasons of "The X Files", a movie or 2, and some "Breaking Bad".
the most i've done is nearly 20GB and that's with 3G. never got anything from verizon in regards to usage.
once 4G is available here i'm probably going to do a hell of a lot more then that and we'll see then.
i have 4g and ive used 5 gb in one day downloading a game and no throttling (rooted using wireless tether). to clarify "throttling" is when they slow down your internet because your using it too much. this happens regardless of whether or not your paying to tether because they do it for just the data you use on your phone as well, but sometimes it takes a while for them to catch it or they never even do. they cant tell that your using wireless tether specifically, but they can tell your using a lot of data so they will throttle you. if your worried about them charging you for going over your data limit, just remove the tethering feature and use wireless tether. then if you go over just tell them it was all on your phone and theres no way they can prove you wrong since according to them you cant be tethering since your not paying them for there services. thank god for rooting though eh?

no need to start a war by cursing (it's also against xda rules). Your sentence did not make sense (with or without shortened words). I recommend a better keyboard like swiftkey or swype if your current one is too hard to use. It just makes it harder to help when one has to guess what you are saying.
well they are doing something,as soon as I hit 20gigs full brakes down to 3g speed on 4g network, that was about 8 says ago,and now this morning gettin 15+ down in sioux falls

Reading the sentence again:
"Please only actual use cases not hypotheticals of actual rooted tethering (non-paying). Use Wireless Tether."
Please only actual use cases (are you familiar w/ this term?, not USE as in to-use something, use-CASES.. examples, specifics, I think you missed how I intended that. No typos there but definitely could've been worded better.)
Please only actual use cases not hypotheticals (self explanatory? Referring to people that are actually tethering in the same fashion, not someone that wants to paste in language from our agreements or can technically confirm Verizon can't see/prove our usage, but from other users actually doing what I'm doing.)
Please only actual use cases not hypotheticals of actual rooted tethering (non-paying). Use Wireless Tether." (this one need explaining too? see above re: hypotheticals)
Given, the sentence wasn't written well but in seeing some of this Sam guys other posts, he apparently gets off by jumping in and offering majority of times criticism over actual substance to be helpful.

All good man, I'm calm. If I could just tether and feel "safe" about it (getting there, but still not 150% like I'd PREFER to be) and wish this headset mic worked..
Other than that, about to take off work and enjoy my 5 day!

no idea if my input is pertinent, but here it is

i use it a lot for Left 4 Dead 1 & 2. damn games are still addicting.
If I were a hardcore gamer, I would swear by using a landline with an ethernet cable. I haven't really gamed on consoles lately, but I think networks like xbox live do some equalizing so those with exceptional pings can't one up those that don't so much.

Poll : Do you want to run Android *within* WebOS as a card?

All,
As you might have seen in thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1288155&page=17
The Chroid release never really got past 0.1 alpha and appears to have died..
Shame as I see a real need for this, like many others I really like WEBOS, its not perfect but works fine, battery life is AWESOME and the native touchpad apps are well writtern..
However with the general android cm7/miui progress/webos now opensourced Im not surprised some developers dont think this is a worthwhile project.. so i thought we simply need to convince a developer its a worthwhile project
Also perhaps maybe someone from opemmobile would contribute towards an opensource project? or themselves re-invigorate this, they originally planned a webos port... (see http://openmobileww.com/smartphone.php)
So to start with I thought Id start this POLL thread, if your interested vote, would you pay for it? $5-$10 sounds reasonable? or more?
Please keep this thread simply for the poll, for general chit chat use the original thread above.
edit : Just to be clear, Im not skilled enough to make this happen but I thought starting this thread, waiting to see the replies we should be able to rouse the interest of a "skilled" developer...
edit : This link is to OpenMobileWW who demo'd ACL on WebOS as a card and looked awesome http://news.mobileroundup.com/2012/01/ces-is-open-mobile-what-webos-has-been-waiting-for/
I'm definitely interested in such an app. I used a Palm Pre- for a couple of years and really learned to love WebOS. I constantly switch back between it and CM7 or one of its flavors depending upon what I want to do. I use WebOS for my email and work, but switch to CM7 for games and other apps. $10 is more than reasonable (I'd pay up to $50 but I think that's too high to sustain a market).
I'd be interested, and I'd be willing to pay $5, maybe $10 depending on how well it emulates within webOS.
Please delete this post, I missed the part about not posting in here. My apologies.

No worries.
i like webos faar better than android.. new to both but no contest really..
the advantage for android is apps apps apps..
it would be great if there was any way that android could function as a card..
would android still have to boot up as a card or would it be instant like a webos
function..
the android os makes TP way more functional-- wireless non-hp printer support..
games.. on and on..
thanx
could you maybe be thinking about this backwards? What you actually want out of the android window is quickly getting to the android apps right? wouldn't it work faster to do what crackberry is doing and just making the android market work within the webos?
getting android apps working within WebOS is what we're after here,, not getting the Android OS working within WebOs.. thats different
I would definitely be interested, I like webos's smoothness but android has sooo many apps, I would prolly pitch in more than that , its a really good idea, and I think anybody can spare 10 bucks

I voted for yes I would pay. I want to explain that a bit. I love XDA and the developers here are amazing. This lot can do things most users only imagine, and more often than not, for free.
On that note, I like WebOS too. Its smooth, little slow but intuitive. I cant find my way around an Ipad but 10 seconds on my touchpad, my very first WebOS device, I have wifi running and was bookmarking XDA. If Android ran smoothly in a card there would be no turning back.
I cant wait to see what happens, lets make it happen!
I love webOS so much more than Android but I'm running Android due to Netflix, etc.
#sentfrommycm7desirehd
Same here if I could I'd rather use WebOS than Android but I still have problems with things like YouTube being slow, and videos stutter, etc.
i'd pay for this
google music would be so good with this
Although I like both systems, I would like to see an effective Android app on a card. I have much more experience with Android but Webos just seems nicer to work with.
I would pay a reasonable price for this, $10-20 bucks.
Mike T
Is this running the android os in a card, or running android apps in a card?
Sent from my Legendary 2.2 infused device.
How much work would it be/how much would it be worth to get X11 working on android or to make surfaceflinger etc. work on webos?
I'm already invested in android, I wouldn't mind paying $10 or more to get android apps (or all of android, including apps) on webos. It'd be more sensible even than paying for SPBShell
How many touchpad users have stuck with webOS d'you reckon?
Well as good as X-ron/Cyanogen & MIUI are on the touchpad I still find WEBOS to be so much better as a tablet OS. Maybe it's just the ability to flick cards away just makes android seem a tad clunky at this point. So long as an Virtual Android isn't expensive I'd probably pay for it... unless ICS is amazing
Honestly my first intention for my touchpad was to root it with android. However, i find myself not even using android on it. I love the webOS interface soooooo much more than andorid, but I hate that it lack the apps. This is where my rooted nookCOLOR comes in. I can count the amount of time I have actually booted into android on the touchpad besides for setting it up to mirror my nookCOLOR settings.
I do like webos but I feel like its like a sexy chick wearing a chastity belt.. looks good but you can't do anything with it.. I don't think I've logged into webos once in the last 3 months.. there's no reason to. Android I s way more functional.. for me at least. Android in a card would take the chastity belt off this biatch.. :-D

Car Dock Plus Development

Ok I have a question... Forgive me if I'm posting in the wrong area. Here is the pitch: I have been looking forward to this phone for a long time (as most of you) I have been interested for a few years in developing an on the go platform for mobile entertainment. What I mean is just something I can use in my car to listen to music or watch movies. I know there are many things that exist that allow me to do this but I'm looking to develop a more all in one truly mobile solution and the Note might be the best option.
Without boring everyone with too much details- I'm hoping the Note comes with NFC for starters but does anyone know- will the usb host adapter allow the Note to charge and possibly use an external hard drive at the same time?
I'm in the R&D stages now for a car dock with software that will allow Note to just slide in and go similar to the newer mobile infotainment systems that are starting to show up in cars now but this will be truly mobile.

Omgosh what a great idea! Hooking up an externel hard drive may work, because you can plug flash drives into tablets and they work just fine. Hope your plan works, because if iit does ill be installing it on my stang
You posted this in an unrelated thread, so I moved it to its own thread. Your plan sounds great, I hope you can make it happen, I'd like a nice car dock for my future Note
Thanks for your interest guys! I will post some more info as the design begins testing.
As of now I'm using my Captivate for a front end... it kinda works but there's a lot of manual interaction which I'm hoping with the Note I can move away from. If this works out I can move to actually producing a full mobile infotainment solution.
I'm curious though... This project started out with just a personal want to make my long drives a little more comfortable. It has now turned in to something that I actually depend on and almost need. Do you guys think there is an actual need for something like this? Maybe this could be a start for a whole new "something" platform.

Personal need and an idea of how to fulfill it is how many great products come around. I really wish I had a decent dock for my Captivate (that's what I've got, too), but none exist - and I have looked. Go for it. See where it takes you. Might make you some nice coin, and make others happy in the process!

Based on how the Galaxy Tab works the answer is no, you can't use the USB drive and charge at the same time. You will need to build a custom cable.

Thanks! I'm hoping that I won't have to mess with the kernel too much... Most of what I need is already open in the OS (I hope) and I will most likely have the hardware completed before the software pieces. As long as my wife doesn't kill me first for spending too much time in the shop.

Hopefully your contribution could be applied here? may I suggest you to take a look at the mp3car.com forums? there's an android section there, very interesting.

What's most needed i feel are the development of physical buttons to control the tablet/phone while driving. I envision using something like a bt version of devices like carpc joycon ex (basically a small device that turns your steering wheel buttons into a usb keyboard), or using modified bt headset buttons.

Nice setup! That is exactly what I'm looking for. The physical buttons are something that also crossed my mind. I will check out the joycon. I think with the USB host it will be a lot easier now. I do frequent mp3car.com they have helped with a couple carpc's I have built for friends and my own XBMC in my WRX I still use to play games while sitting in my car. This is the first time I'm traveling down the android path and I think it's going to be a better experience all around.
Thanks.
Now I think the note would be way more appropriate for my other car - the 8.9 is more fitting to a truck really.

I'm gonna try using a Seagate goflex satellite hard drive as a media center for my note in my car. It's 500gb and produces a Wi-Fi signal that the phone hooks onto, you then use the Seagate app to access all the hard drives music and movies. I plan to hardwire the hard drive into my cars power along with a micro charger to plug into the Samsung note car dock. I'll let everyone know how the hard drive works out. It could be an option for your project too, although the hard drive is rather pricy.

Yeah, I have considered that, but I've seen less than stellar reviews on Amazon and I balked. Price is not a concern, as long as it works. The reviews stated that the interface was very poor and buggy. No playlists, no thumbnails, no folder support, IIRC.
Seagate, like Samsung, is not known for writing sleak software. So the fact that I must depend on their updates (will it work with ICS? Will it work in Landscape mode? etc.) is a concern. They should release their APIs at least, or source code.
I'd rather something like a NAS DLNA server. With DLNA, I can choose a bunch of compatible apps, I believe.
Also, about the Seagate's wifi connection, is is ad-hoc? Would it prevent the tablet from accessing the Internet? I suspect not, if you're using the note, but if you're using a tablet tethered to the phone...then this wouldn't work.
I have seen a couple lack luster reviews on the satellite but my friend is offering it to me for $75 because he never uses it anymore so I figured I would give it a shot. If it doesn't do what I need it to in the car I will either just use it for my tablet in home or sell it as Im sure I could recoup at least $75 from a $200 hard drive
Great, please report back your findings.

In this set-up, is the music coming out of the car's speakers or the Note?

[Q] Lapdock for Atrix 4g - what do you use it for?

I just got my lapdock and it's neat, no doubt about it. But what do you actually use it for?

I'm gonna wait for this one to get going before I input my wit!
VERY basic web browsing (email, facebook, xda, etc) and that's it. Don't try to fire up too many youtube videos or you'll get the low memory popup. I'm going to take my lapdock for a weekend wedding trip instead of my laptop in May...I should be ok. Looking forward to possible improvements in the future ICS build .

I got my new bicycle today........It's really shiny and cool. What's a bicycle do anyway?
Why did you buy something if you don't know what to do with it?
(Sorry, but it's either of two things..............you worded the OP in a way that doesn't convey what you really meant, or you really did just buy a lapdock without knowing what it's for)

My main curiosity is what most people use it for, as each person finds different value in different items....
I know what it is for and I'm enjoying using it in my own fashion. The main reason I bought it, so you will know, is because I found it for $50 bucks and it will increase the value of my Atrix 4g as a package, if & and when I go to sell it, should I ever find a phone I like more.
Also,Congrats on your new bicycle as well. I hope it serves you well. Just wait until you take the training wheels off! You'll be REALLY happy.
Thanks, I'm really happy with it! It has streamers on the handles!
I bought the lapdock in a deal also, but unfortunately mine is off to Motorola as there was something wrong with it when I received it. I think the lapdock will change somewhat in functionality once Webtop 3.0 becomes available to us. It should have more of a "laptop" functionality at that point I think.
I used it for very little until I installed webtop2sd, and turned it into a very serviceable portable connected computer. I have replaced my current laptop with the lapdock, and have been quite happy using Openoffice, and PDF reader. Professionally, I now have used it in court 3-4 times to hold reference materials (instead of printing volumes of online records), and I do email with it. I have also heard that it is very functional in a remote desktop setting, but aside from testing this, I have not pursued it.
The one issue that I have is installing firefox extensions. My lack of linux knowledge is holding me back, and I would like to be able to read .tif files from within the browser, but as of now cannot. Other than this, I think it is safe to consider this as functional as a regular (lower end) laptop.
Again, I cannot reiterate how much more useful webtop2sd makes this device. Who knows what the ICS update will bring?
Meh, id rather have an actual linux distro than android on a screen: Ubuntu is made for a mouse and keyboard, android, and specifically the apps for it, are made for touchscreens that our lapdocks do not have, so i dont see it translating well.
