Samsung Vibrant Questions

Hey guys, newbie here and I got some questions for y'all.
I am a longtime iPhone user, thinking about switching over to the Vibrant. I'm used to the jailbreaking/unlocking of the iphone...are similar things able to be done to the Vibrant?

Ok a few things.
Yes, you can root the vibrant and install custom roms.
On the iPhone you can install hacked apps, meaning you don't pay for them, techinically you can do the same on an Android phone by just having the apk file, however this is frowned upon because that is stealing. Why not just pay for the app? Apps are cheap on Android.
If you are a current iPhone user and if you purchase the Vibrant, YOU WILL BE UNHAPPY. I suggest you wait for the iPhone 5 which will be released in June, or wait for the dual core Android phones coming out. Do not get the original Vibrant.
Ps...the Vibrant 4G is going to be released soon. You can also get the Nexus S at best buy.
btw coming to xda and saying you don't pay for apps and you steal them was not a wise idea.
Go back to the iphone, this isn't the place for you.

Stay classy!
OP:
Yes, you can "jailbreak", for Android it is called root, and in turn you can install custom ROMs, Kernels, and for the Vibrant "modems" (radio's on other phones). As for "free" apps, Android, unlike iOS, has TONS of free apps already. Developers tend to offer a free and paid version, main difference is the free version has ads in it. Developers actually make more money off the ad revenue (typically) than the paid versions. There are still apps that are only paid, or the full version are paid only, and to be very honest trying to get those for free is BS in my opinion, especially given the prices.
This site is FULL of all the info you need to root any Android phone and start loading custom ROMs. It is very addictive, and compared to the iPhone, it is like living in America versus living in China in terms of freedom to do what you want. In China (iPhone) you are limited in your ways, and can do as you please to an extent. Where as in America (Android) you are free to do as you please, but have a great infrastructure to help guide you and aid you in such venturers.

I am not on AT&T, I am on T-Mobile. I have had a 3G for the last 2 years, but with the new ios4.3 comes out, it will not have an update for the 3G, they are getting fazed out. So I'm moving away from the iphone for a while, may get a 4 down the road.
I understand cracked apps are illegal, a TMO CSR pointed me to this website, so if cracked apps aren't talked about here fine, I didn't know. I was just going where I was told by Tmobile to get information regarding it. Simple as that.
I have a free 2 year upgrade at TMobile right now, so I'm looking between the Vibrant and the MyTouch 4G. Right now I'm using a Blackberry Bold 9780.

Warez is not just frowned upon, but is grounds for banishment on XDA, and actually every single decent Android site. Explaining how to get it, where to get it, or giving it out is a major no no, and asking (especially after being told) is a no no as well.
This isn't iOS where everything costs money, this is Android where you can literally get 95% of apps for free from the market. There is no need to steal, not that there is on iOS (I have an iPad, love it, and have paid for my fair share of apps even though it is jailbroken).
Lastly, if that is your only desire in a phone, then just don't get one. If all you want to do is use your phone to steal, then you don't deserve to have a phone.

You were told multiple times it is a no no, and in turn decided to ask again. At that point it isn't a question of not a knowing, it is clearly a matter of not caring.

Welcome to XDA! I came to the Vibrant from the iPhone 3G and I love it, as one has said you can steal apps but no one here will help you with that, also apps seem to generally cheaper on android than they are on iOS.
Depending on what you are looking for you may be happier where your currently have. Android's market is growing quiet well but I feel that it currently doesn't match the iOS market when it comes to games, so if games are your thing I would stay away (but we do have great emulators!) Many things may have changed in iOS since I used it last back in 3.0 something another.
Now few things I love personally love about android! Google Voice is easily used, Ive been using it for about 2 years now and haven't given out my real number since, its the best! Google maps is amazing, always getting updates haven't used a standalone gps since. You can customize the desktop however you feel please (don't need winterboard and everything, its just a ton easier). Swype is pure amazing, I could never go back to normal texting after getting use to it, super fast! And finally googles voice integration, you can talk and have it type what is said, you can have it search for you or even open your google maps and have it set your navigation!
As I'm sure you've noticed by now the forum has a lot of idiots who have nothing to add to the community except their derogatory remarks, sadly they don't seem to ever go away do they?

The link has short videos that would explain what it is better than I would.

Interesting, never even heard of that before.
Are you using the 2.3 or 2.2 on yours?

Officially, yes. Google has released 2.3 out but nothing official for us yet.
so what exactly is "rooting" then and what does it accomplish?

Rooting does what jail breaking did for the iphone. Allows you to do what you normally couldn't. Its also really easy to do, there are a few different things you can use but they all get the same thing done.
When you root you can install new rom's like a 2.3 rom if you wish. There developers who change them how they wish and then share them with the community, you can find them in Vibrant Android Development part of the forums. You can also download new kernels that will allow you to overclock your phone or even underclock if you wish.
In the android market there are some apps that also require you to root your phone to use them. One such app is Titanium Backup, it will back all the apps and stuff you have downloaded so if you install a new rom or lose your phone or something you can easily reinstall everything.
Basically rooting fully opens up your phone, allowing anything.

[Q] Atrix and lapdock for college?

Hey XDA, it's been a while,
I need a new phone and was considering buying the Atrix and a lapdock for taking notes during lectures. I thought this would be a good idea considering how portable the lapdock is and how many books are in my bag. I already have a beast Core i7 system at home so that's where I would be typing essays, doing research, etc. But for lectures all I really need is some sort of word processing app.
I've been reading mixed things about tethering and lapdock usage though and I don't know that I fully understand what is going on. My phone plan currently does not have any data at all and I am not interested in tethering, just wifi use now and then. Also, I am on T-Mobile.
So my questions are:
-Is this a good choice for portable, note taking?
-Do I need some sort of data plan or AT&T specific tethering plan in order for me to use this at all?
-Can I still use this if I unlock it to T-Mobile?
Oh, and thanks in advance!
Sure, this would be decent option - just keep it in airplane mode and turn on wifi manually when you have access.
Use any of the word processing/not taking apps and you could even record the audio of the speaker/prof to review later.
Get you a decent sized SD card to store that audio though!
Good luck and NEVER stop learning.
I may be wrong, but i thought the apps for webtop were web based? So if you don't at least have wifi in the class you won't be able to take notes. At least that's what I think, I dont have a lapdock so I'm not sure. But if I am, you could always download a note taking app on the phone and the just access the phone screen from the lapdock and take notes in the app. Hope I helped!
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
No, not necessarily, but you could mod webtop following some of the guides and get you openoffice.
However, you can use the mobile view and use one of the Android note taking apps fullscreen.

Words of wisdom!!!
Thanks for the the feedback, everyone. It's sounding like this might be a great way to go. I was looking at specs and carrying this thing around will be so much better than lugging my 16" cinderblock laptop around in my backpack.
So is webtop an app that is installed on the Atrix itself or is it an "OS" that is built into the lapdock? This is sort of confusing because isn't the lapdock essentially just a screen and keyboard, for the mobile device, without a CPU, GPU, memory, etc?
Also, does the "mobile view" just stretch the tiny screen onto the larger screen or does it actually take advantage of the increased screen size? Hopefully that question makes sense.
Even if I can't use webtop or webtop apps without a web connection, it's sounding like (thanks to xda devs) there is still a lot of functionality in this system. At home I've been dual booting Windows and Ubuntu for ages now so I'm a huge fan of Open Office so that's great news for me.

+1 here too. Took the words right out of my mouth. I will add that it makes my bookbag lighter for carrying around my stuff for college. I actually like all the looks I get when i use it since its not the common. People make the best comments ever.
true the apps are web based but when you open quick office or quick office pro you can use it to take notes and stuff you dont need internet. Also you can save this and edit it and polish it up at home on your pc.
I recommend you mod your webtop to a full Ubuntu jaunty installation with xfce4. Like that you will have to stop wandering what it does, because it'll do nearly everything you would expect a laptop to do. I don't know how into modding you are, but check these forums, plenty of info out there

Can you do that?! Modding isn't an issue for me. Especially since most of the guides on XDA are pretty much idiot proof. But won't Ubuntu run slowly? Is it even stable?
I'm still not sure how the webtop app works. Is it built into the lapdock or the Atrix?
All my remaining questions about the webtop app and the lapdock have been answered by the google. Thanks to everyone for their replies!

HTC inspire AT&T bypass lockscreen password

My daughter has a HTC Inspire & recently lost it due to behavior unbecoming for a young lady!! My question is is there a way to gain root access in order to blow out the password file & access the phone or any other trick that wont reset everything? If im being honest, Im scared to death of what I might find but also believe its something that needs to be addressed before something even worse happens! Any of you with daughters know what im talking about.
I guess I could just record a youtube video of me putting a couple rounds in it!
Thanks in advance!

this should do it
That looks like a nice program to instal on the device after I get into it but as it stands now the phone is locked & I dont even think its even rooted at this time! I need a tool or windows download of some sort. Any help greatly appreciated!
How about this?
http://androidadvices.com/unlock-android-phone-forgot-pin-password-screen-lock/
It should work but it will require you to know the Gmail account (username and password) that your daughter used when she setup the phone in order to access android market on your PC and download the app.
Good luck

Do you know the # of characters for the password?
Start by trying things that you know your daughter is into... favourite band, tv show, etc.. or simple things like her birthday, her best friend's name
But honestly, why wouldn't you just ask her?
Tell her AT&T needs to know her password so they can try to recover the phone... just get creative, then once you unlock it install the app and you're good to go!
Yeah I figured out the password & tried to install the program but it says for security your phone is set to block installation of non market apps & takes me to settings but i couldnt find any options to allow me to do it.
Is this a relevant article or is there an newer or easier way?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=706887
Go to
Menu > Settings > Applications
Check the "unknown sources" box, good to go.
Not sure if AT&T still locks their phones from doing this.. but if so, the option won't be there..
I can't imagine that they would do still lock them from sideloading because then you wouldn't be able to use the Amazon app store..
Let me know

Jesus man ......... i so wish you hadn't posted this bro ........*sigh*.
I have 6 year old twin girls ......... and one of them Gretel ........ already has the most inappropriate friends you could possible imagine ...............
Am not being 'square' in believing 6 year olds do not need high heels am I??
That 6 year olds encouraging each other to kiss boys is unnecessarily early??
Or that in 2012 hair length and colour of garment should not be a big gender signifier??
Dood .......... please tell me it gets better??
Yeah its NOT giving me that option..... Im updating the software in hopes that fixes it. any other work arounds for sideloading if not?
And no sir unfortunately it DOESNT get better! Im gonna end up in prison!! LOL
No offence, but at six years old, you should be able to dictate who her friends are - so long as you have the mother's (wife's?) support
I do hear what you are saying.. environmentally it's hard nowadays.. so much inappropriate influence from media/friends/etc
but my five year old daughter does what I say.. end of story.. it all boils down to the parents. Act now brother! Save the children! (seriously) it only gets harder.

Yeah that would work where it not for the fact that my kids are at school full time 5 days a week 9am-3pm and the inappropriate kids are her school friends. I have no control over who see hangs with at school ........ just like every other parent.
Looking for solutions for something similar to this.
maybe a free solution..... Anyone heard or have any expeirence with anything like this?

Go to htcsense.com, log on to the accpunt she useful for HTC apps. From there you can track her phone, forward messages and calls to another phone. Lock the phone, etc..... I love it because I lost it once and I tracked it down and found it, also I was able to forward everything to my galaxy s.

VERY basic web browsing (email, facebook, xda, etc) and that's it. Don't try to fire up too many youtube videos or you'll get the low memory popup. I'm going to take my lapdock for a weekend wedding trip instead of my laptop in May...I should be ok. Looking forward to possible improvements in the future ICS build .

My main curiosity is what most people use it for, as each person finds different value in different items....
I know what it is for and I'm enjoying using it in my own fashion. The main reason I bought it, so you will know, is because I found it for $50 bucks and it will increase the value of my Atrix 4g as a package, if & and when I go to sell it, should I ever find a phone I like more.
Also,Congrats on your new bicycle as well. I hope it serves you well. Just wait until you take the training wheels off! You'll be REALLY happy.
Thanks, I'm really happy with it! It has streamers on the handles!
I bought the lapdock in a deal also, but unfortunately mine is off to Motorola as there was something wrong with it when I received it. I think the lapdock will change somewhat in functionality once Webtop 3.0 becomes available to us. It should have more of a "laptop" functionality at that point I think.
I used it for very little until I installed webtop2sd, and turned it into a very serviceable portable connected computer. I have replaced my current laptop with the lapdock, and have been quite happy using Openoffice, and PDF reader. Professionally, I now have used it in court 3-4 times to hold reference materials (instead of printing volumes of online records), and I do email with it. I have also heard that it is very functional in a remote desktop setting, but aside from testing this, I have not pursued it.
The one issue that I have is installing firefox extensions. My lack of linux knowledge is holding me back, and I would like to be able to read .tif files from within the browser, but as of now cannot. Other than this, I think it is safe to consider this as functional as a regular (lower end) laptop.
Again, I cannot reiterate how much more useful webtop2sd makes this device. Who knows what the ICS update will bring?
Meh, id rather have an actual linux distro than android on a screen: Ubuntu is made for a mouse and keyboard, android, and specifically the apps for it, are made for touchscreens that our lapdocks do not have, so i dont see it translating well.

I am not send spam. I just want to share something good with somebody who has the same demands. Maybe I used an inappropriate expression that is easy to be understood .I will change next time. But the product I mentioned before is really nice.
You could at least post this in Android general or something. That may actually help people who want to develop but are on a budget. But definitely not here.
