I'm making the jump to the x2 from the fascinate this week & am looking for some general advice about the phone. Most of the other active flashaholics have gone another direction but I've had positive experience with Motorola in the past. I actually wanted the original x last year, rather than the fascinate, but it was soldout so long I couldn't wait. So here I am full circle and looking forward to a phone that can receive calls regularly. So...
1. What's the word on the bootloader unlock?
2. What's safe to do on the phone?
3. Is it easy to brick?
4. What do I use to flash roms/themes? Anything like Odin?
5. What file structure is used?
6. Is it a solid phone, barring bells & whistles?
Don't mean to run on, but any advice is greatly appreciated.

1. Don't hold your breath.
2. Not sure what you mean by safe.
3. Only if you don't know what you're doing.
4. bootstrap/recovery, the current release is a modified version of the Atrix CWM
5. No idea what you're asking here.
6. In my opinion, out of the box this phone is sub par. However with the proper mods it easily becomes the best phone in Verizons line up.

I would agree. Maybe not completely with number 6, but I would agree for the most part.
Do You Think Te DX2 wll still have data issues?
Well I just took delivery on my dx2 & look forward to being a part of this community. So far setting up has been pretty flawless & I already get better signal than my fascinate did. For any of you that switched over, did they let you keep your fascinates sd card?

Been three days now with my x2 from the fascinate and I love it..been 28 hrs of normal usage and battery is at 30%. My fascinate would be at 30% after 18 hrs tops. I havent made any major changes either, just rooted and removed some bloat that i dont use and installed the recovery. It seems to be a great time to get on the x2 bandwagon, we already have one rom and team BAMF (who made some roms for the fascinate) has been shipped an x2 to create a rom for us. Check out rootzwiki for more info on that.
I would love to know how you get 20+ hrs from the x2. Just in standby I get 20 hrs. Any use puts me at 10 hrs to 20%.
Note: rooted, debloated, launcherpro, widget locker, minimalist text widget and screen brightness lowest.

Do not return your sd card... They will not give it back. Keep everything but the actual phone..
Dont really know what to tell you, unplugged it yesterday before I went to work and when i posted that message, it was still on and at 30%. Might be due to the fact that I run Juice Defender, but even with that on my fasciante i got crap battery life

Anyone notice any audio pops when playing music? I tried both the stock player & the google music player. Seems to be when background data engaged.

There is no such thing as a sim card for a X2. They are exclusively CDMA phones.

For me it is love hate,
the phone seems solid, light and very fast
i have rooted, supercharged, sd speed increase, debloated, frozen apps, using ADW, installed system recovery and cache cleaners
that being said, the phone seems *mostly* stable
- moto blur blows…
- the video does skip or drop a frame here and there, pretty regularly...frustrating
- I have been having trouble with audio, not necessarily popping or skipping all that much since the mods, but it is randomly rebooting during playback for some reason...frustrating
but when it does work...it sounds awesome,… I think. (Mixzing with eq)
- I use Wi-Fi tether, I am having issues with it rebooting ALOT, like every 10 minutes or so. Tried the cache cleaners and other version of the app, no help....really frustrating
- I uploaded video to Face book from a concert, it looked like total crap, and there was no audio...frustrating
- I tried to take video of several more sets at the concert only to have the recordings fail at the very end, losing them entirely, ...very frustrating - seeing that I had a better camera that would have worked flawlessly.
- calls are very clear, with a great signal
- internet is super fast and easy with this phone/large screen
- the screen is pixilated though, you need to mess around with the brightness/density…it does help
- does take a decent picture (in the right conditions)
- all the rest of my apps seem to run quickly and flawlessly, except for what was previously mentioned.
- My battery life is great
so I’d say it's a mixed bag, coming from an og droid, the phone is vastly superior speed wise, but it is not nearly as stable or customizable…yet
I think many of us here are pinning our hopes that it is mostly software related and that roms, or ota gingerbread will fix the majority of the issues
if software doesn’t help considerably, I’m dumping this phone for something else
I can’t have a phone that is re-booting 10 times a day, this is getting ridiculous.

i've had my droid x2 since the june 28. i haven't had 1 single random reboot. in fact, i haven't had any of the issues such as studdering video, skipping music or random reboots.
i guess i'm lucky.
So i convinced my friend to grab this phone because of all the goodness and epic speeds ive experienced with my 1.2ghz dual core mytouch 4g slide...
Hes not happy and he thinks his phone is ****ty, everything seems slow, the 4g in the browser, as well as all the stock apps. Im sure all of you can understand what he means since you have the phone.
I feel bad for him, lol... Anyways im just considering to root his phone for him so i can overclock his phone as well as get him setcpu for battery life.
Im asking the photon community for some input/advice. How are the devs doing for your phone. Any operational AOSP roms? Which rom should i check out for a vanilla android feel that is buttery smooth and just makes you love your phone?
My friend is a noob and all, im mostly looking for a fully operational rom so he doesnt get the urge to whip his phone at the wall.

that doesn't make any sense...
What does your snapdragon have to do with the tegra 2 SOC powering the photon they are completely different experiences. If you like how your phone runs why not just recommend your friend buy one like yours.
Also, rooting won't allow you to OC. You'll need the OC kernel that's floating around the dev section. As for roms, CM7 is in the works. Wait for that and slap it on your friends phone when it's done.
Or just tell him to get a new phone. I hear samsung's great for "noobs"
PS:
There are also no real downsides to rooting.
This phone has the best battery life of any android phone I have ever owned out of the box. The speeds are crazy and everything on the device is super smooth. The only time I ever experience an issue is with the stock keyboard - its just not right for me. I use SwiftKey X.
Speeds on 4G are pretty much a joke anywhere - they get to call those speeds 4G when GSM 3G has had similar speeds for a long time. Yeah, they are better than Sprints 3G most the time, but they definitely are slow in comparison to HSPA or LTE
The only downfalls of rooting are the same as the Epic Touch - it does void the warranty, even though it is reversible or hide-able. The chances of being caught are low.
Now the downfall of Unlocking the bootloader is that we don't have 4G working again, unless you relock which doesn't take long.
Honestly if dude isn't happy with the phone, there is something wrong with him or he needs to buy a different device. Probably an iDevice.

We are talking about the giant octagon shaped phone from sprint in qHD and has a 1.0 dual core processor right? Why shouldnt i expect similar performance to my 1.2 dual core. Is your second core completely dormant or something? Mine atleast runs all the background apps with the second core.
Your phone is newer, and is/was the flagship phone for sprint.
I witnessed him having to wait about 10 seconds after clicking on his bookmark just to load google in the middle of chicago where he has full bars of 4g.
After that he showed me his 15 second wait to get to espn.go.com. he lives in the city and he said this is normal for him.
He showed me his stock music app which was just rediculous. Like 5 seconds or so to load artists, and then again for songs. I fixed that for him instantly when i have him mixzing from the market.
So your phone has terrible stock software, and a ton of bloatware. Im thinking that rooting it and getting a rom with more vanilla android apps would do the trick, but as for his network speed im not so sure. Maybe sprint is just a p.o.s. maybe its the stock radio.

I didnt think the network being THAT slow was possible.
Losing 4g sounds like a pain in the ass. So whats the problem you only get 4g with S-on and not with S-off? Im gonna have to do some research so that i can root his phone and flash a new rom within a couple hours...

Tegra Chip is easily capable of 1.6/7 - they do it on the Xoom all day long. But that speed isn't really used, there aren't any apps that are that intensive. And if they do exist, they have been optimized for Tegra 2 and Physx.

We don't have 4G because the unlocked bootloader messes with our RSA keys which authenticate the device to the network. I know a fix is being worked on, but I am not sure if we should count on anything any time soon.
Also technically I believe our phone and chipset is older, I mean the Atrix is a twin and its been out for a good long time now - we are only slightly upgraded in comparison.
How long it takes to load a website has to do with download speeds, not bloatware. I just tried an experiment. I loaded google news. (about 10 seconds) then I loaded something that wasn't a browser. Then I went to the home screen and tapped google news. It loaded instantly. Then I went to the home screen and clicked a shortcut for ars technica. 11 seconds. I believe that was download speed.
I have 2 bars of 3g, by the way.
My downloads are much faster when I have wifi.
So I don't think rooting and removing bloatware will make any difference.
I have found that sometimes the phone us confused as to whether 4g is available, and in those cases, turning off the 4g radio improves performance. That might be your friend's problem.
I have been thrilled with the speed and responsiveness of my photon, by the way. Yes, downloads can be limited by signal, but everything that's on the phone is instant response and buttery smooth. So my other hypothesis it's that there's something wrong with your friend's unit. Try clearing out everything non-stock that he loaded and see if performance improves. If that doesn't do it, try exchanging it for a different unit.

I can not find code: "persist.ril.uart.flowctrl=1"
Tried Root Explorer and Rom Toolbox and neither showed this. I am running Joker's 1.4 kernal not sure if that could possibly make any difference???
what rom cm doesn't have it think its only stock or stock based I'm on rocko and its there also just did the file swap can't say it helped yet but no problems with it so far don't think in going to try the unthrottle mod though looks terribly risky of having to sbf the line in my prop is immediately after cdma ril........

Currently running CM7.2 and the code literally isn't there at all which leads me to believe that you could just delete the entire thing and it would either help or hurt your speed on Sprint's network.

idk thread says if you put a 0 you lose internet and zep was looking into it saying it can only be turned on or off not adjusted but then again said maybe it could be seems like it needs more research/testing but hell as horrible as sprint network in my areas is especially without 4g and flakey wifi anything that can help im trying
so i have been running this for a full day now and can say both mods seemed to have improved my stability and speed of internet saying this because in my are the 3gs are more like no gs and withe mod1 and 2 in place ive gotten a very reliable connection and much improved ( not to the point of worth shouting about but ) i a using null settings on mod 1 just leaving it blank and ive done the file swap in the second mod i want to try the unthrottle bit but im no dev and dont want to play with it not knowing exactly what it could do to my magnificent mopho. gl folks hope this works for you guys as well as it "appears" to be for me

using rocko's unlocked rom with it nulled out (left it blank) maybe placebo but feels like its better so far as adding it to cm i think cm already removes the flow control im not 100% on that but if you wanna try it make sure you nandroid and or put a .bak after your prop so you can fix if something goes awry.

The location should'nt matter. You definitely dont want a # before a line that you want parsed. A # is essentially voiding that line out. It is called a comment in technical terms.

Help a noob out? I have a virgin DX2 - never rooted - freshly updated to 2.3.5 (was in the soak) - and I'm finally ready to root it and try out a ROM. I've been lurking here for a week or so reading & trying to learn all I can about the process - and I think I'm ready to give it a shot.
Obviously Step 1 is to SBF back to 2.3.4 so I can get rooted, but after that is where I'm running into some indecision. I can't decide if I want to go straight to CM7 from there - or follow the instructions to keep root, SBF back to 2.3.5 and install Eclipse 2.2.
I know both ROMs have their loyal followers and I'm sure either would be a big improvement over stock Blur... and I know it's easy enough to try BOTH of them once I get the hang of all this... but I'd still appreciate some advice about which to try first.
For those of you who've tried both, which do you prefer? What are the pros & cons of each?
Thanks!

Seems to center around Eclipse and CM7 mostly. Eclipse can be a bit more polished in my estimation, mostly due to HDMI, FM radio, less buggy, you know, all the bells and whistles working. For the most part, either way you go you'll be fine.
Currently I have myself and my wife on CM7, we both like it. No real issues to speak of.
I personally perfer CM7RC1 its a solid daily driver very minor issues and I never get bored with it. Here's my overview of both ROMs.
CM7RC1
Pros:
Extremely Smooth.
Lots Of Mods/Tweaks.
Endless Customization.
Gingerbread 2.37
Theme Engine.
Wifi Tethering
Fully AOSP.
Toggles.
Cons:
HDMI Mirroring Is Unsupported.
FM Radio Is Unsupported.
Bugs:
Data Triangle. (Fixed By Reboot, *228)
Battery Exclamation. (Fixed By Reboot)
Some Experience Wifi Connecting Issues. (Fixed By Manual Connect)
Eclipse 2.2
Very Smooth.
Few Mods/Tweaks.
Limited Customization.
Gingerbread 2.35.
Flashable Themes.
AOSP/BLUR Hybrid.
Toggles.
Cons:
Lack Of Customization.
Is Only Gingerbread 2.35.
No Tethering.
Bugs:
Some Experience Wifi Resetting. (No Fix ATM)

I have tried out every x2 rom under the sun and as of right now I think your best bet is cm7. I would recommend running the cm7 mash up script, along with the dual core script, because with both of these the res is flawless.
but of course, I think you should try both of them out because it is personal preference. And if we get cm9 here soon then we will all be happy little cracked out, flashed up, ics'd whores with everything we can dream of for the x2, with some extra feta cheese.

This is a fair evaluation of both ROMs but really it all boils down to personal preference and things like if you need HDMI and stuff like that...I personally never use HDMI or the FM radio...but still liked eclipse and that's what I have on my wife's phone albeit its 2.1...I am sure when CM9 comes out she will like to try it...in short flash them both run them for a week or so and see which one you like and go from there

I have tried out every x2 rom under the sun and as of right now I think your best bet is cm7. I would recommend running the cm7 mash up script, along with the dual core script, because with both of these the res is flawless.

Just a caution on CM7; I haven't tried the latest release but on the first release the camcorder continuous auto-focus didn't function. It seemed to focus once when you press the shutter button and remain fixed, and sometimes that focus was in error itself. Not a lot of people seem to care about that but my phone has the heavy responsibility of archiving my sons' most important memories for them to look back on when they are older, so I just went back to stock rom. Other than that, CM7 seemed great.
I use CM7RC1 Dual Core Script, Build Prop Mashup, 8 Touch Point Mod, Cron Scheduler, Beats Audio, 3 CDMA Mods. My phone is blazing fast!

In my experience the beats audio hack ruined my sound quality. Also the dual core script......Our 2nd core boots up automatically when there's a demand for more memory. Dragonzkiller even stated this is the dual core script thread. Keeping both on at all times pretty much only drains your battery faster. Only difference I noticed with it was the home screen animations were a little snappier. Wasn't enough change in performance for the lack of battery IMHO. Just a few things if you go the CM7 route. Never tried Eclipse so I can't help you there.

Why do these keep popping up...the search bar is definitely not be used...
Anyways...Eclipse is literally a hair slower than cm7 but it is worlds more stable. Wifi on Eclipse far better than cm7's. Cm7 has some SU issues but they can be fixed by installing Super SU from the market and getting rid of the normal SU app.
Tethering is easier on cm7 is strong -- heat is something you'll have to worry about. I've tethered on Eclipse through the use of a Market app so a little more work must be done there.
Downside to Eclipse is that you must go to 2.3.5 to use it whereas Cm7 is 2.3.4. Battery life on Eclipse is better for me. I've had serious computer trouble this past month and have had to do some research for papers on my phone! With the brightness on full, Gmusic/Pandora/power amp going and internet on my battery would last ~6-9 hours.
I should also mention that I have the Second Core Script going and my battery life took a very small. Not backbreaking but noticeable.
Not going to lie ; your phone will heat up slightly more regardless of the rom you're on when you use the script
Personally I enjoy Eclipse much more than cm7. Blue is my favorite color
Come over to the dark side...
Hmm haven't ran into any sound issues yet. As far as the dual core script I understand the core will activate on demand. The thing is this only happens when the CPU becomes so over tasked by processes it create a short lag before kicking in. This script makes that laggy transition disappear. I would only recommend this script for people with the extended battery like me tho.

Obviously, lol... no "lag" or time needed to boot because its already always on...
Did you use the script editor in ROM toolbox to apply it, sealedfate? If so do you check apply on boot, or do you only use it when you see fit?

If you have a X2 now I would say you have to try them both. Run one for a couple of weeks do a nano back up and then try the other for a couple of weeks. Then you can decide which you like better. Or you can do like I did and just keep going back and forth every few weeks because you love them both
I have the script in system/ect/init.d so it applies on boot. Helps a hell of a lot with 3D games.

Actually, like I said in my first post, I'm been doing nothing but searching and reading on here for the past week or so. Eclipse 2.2 just dropped a week ago, so I was looking for fresh opinions from people who had tried CM7 and that version specifically.
I appreciate all the helpful comments from everyone though. I think I'll do like a few of you suggested and try them both eventually... starting with CM7.
Hopefully we can all add CM9 to the list of ROMs to try very soon!

Yep! I've been following his Twitter feed and the "CM9DX2 anticipation" thread on here. Can't wait to see how it goes. Sounds like he's REAL close!
Success! Following Moon Shadow's instructions to the letter, I successfully SBF'd back to 2.3.4, rooted, and installed CM7 without any problems whatsoever. CM7 is up and running! Just need to get my apps reinstalled and I'll be good to go. Man... you guys weren't kidding. The phone is SOOOO much faster/smoother now, it's not even funny. Should have done this a long time ago.
Thanks everyone!
OK, it appears that I spoke too soon. I realized soon after that the Google apps did not get loaded on my phone (Gmail, Maps, Nav, YouTube, etc.), but some of the other apps in that same ZIP file DID get installed (Talk). Also, my old background pic was still on the phone.
I was able to download/install the missing Google apps without any problem and they all work perfectly (including Nav from the car dock) - and everything else has been running flawlessly. The phone is very fast & smooth... no bugs... not a single force close or reboot yet after fairly heavy use for the last couple of days.
So... obviously something didn't go perfectly with my install, but as far as I can tell, everything is fine with the phone. How can I tell if I'm missing anything else? Should I just keep what I have or SBF back to 2.3.4 and start over again? I'm perfectly happy with it right now - but maybe I don't know what I'm missing.

Not sure how anyone might be able to tell you what you might be missing on your phone. It is pretty basic what you get, not a lot of bells and whistles put in by default.
Not aware of a comprehensive list of what you should have exactly.

first thing, this wont brick your device (0% chance)
what i have done is patched the services.jar to allow more apps to stay in memory (up to 8 i think)
ive been using it and so far my browser have not reloaded once, only when i load up over 8 apps at the same time
this means your phone will have less available memory, but its being put to good use, since its not being used anyway lol
the main change ive noticed so far is improvement in the browser, way less reloads.
i need a couple people to flash this and report your findings
it also makes your phone UI a bit faster as well. lemme know. maybe its a placebo for me, which i hope im wrong
flash away
Safe to assume this needs to be used on the newest base?

Another note is Mikey mentioned he fixed MeanROM on the previous base to have a higher OOM priority (lower number) for the browser, gapps, and other stuff so they wouldn't get killed so easily.
Any thoughts on doing the same thing also? I have no idea if Auto Memory Manager works on ICS, that allows you to modify the OOM priority for specific apps.

This keeps the browser in memory even after running 6 apps. I'll keep testing it through out the day.

Testing now.. Hey flex I'm loving stock w/ goodies but I'm a noob and can't post in development yet. Am I the only one have issues adding a card in google wallet and gTalk won't log in correctly. You're the man by the way.
there is also a script the zeppelinx is working on the deletes the time when android is suppose to kill apps. it is in the v6 superccharger thread.
I was able to go about 8 apps deep before it killed sky fire. I got about 5 with the tweak in the other thread.

Do you need to be on the deodoxed rom to flash this. Also I'm on 2.13 htvdev unlocked with no desire to s-off, will this mod cause some sort of discrepancy in build that will stop me from being able to apply future ota updates.
