Low Antutu benchmark/GTA III lags - TouchPad General

I'm running CM7 xron vB 2.91 and have m TP overclocked to 1.728GHZ ondemand.
I would post a screenshot, but I don't think Android natively supports screenshot capture like the iOS does.
My overall benchmark is: 5627. Some people get over 6500+ points. Is it because of the kernel that I am using?

Also, many people claim that GTA III runs smooth at max settings. It is very choppy for me. Are there any tweaks that I need?

[DEV] CM7 Kernel performance comparisons (stock vs OC)

So, for all us CM7 users, there have recently been alot of questions as to why there is such a disparity between the stock CM7 kernel, and the 1.1Ghz kernel, given both are made by the same person (dalingrin). Really, there are two questions -
1) Why is the quadrant score different between the kernels?
2) How does this equate to real-world use?
To help answer #1, i went ahead and purchased a copy of Quadrant Advanced. The advanced version lets me run the bench offline (helpful at work ), and also shows each piece of the score (the important part, as seen in the results). this breakdown shows where the difference is.
But to answer #2, I have to go well beyond Quadrant, and look at many different benches. I tried to find a variety of both system and 3D benches in a hope to uncover any problems anywhere. If there is a more widespread problem, it may be uncovered in other benchmarks. So, without further ado, the test system:
CM7- nightly 27, running on eMMC
Stock CM7 Kernel, 925Mhz, Performance Governor
OC CM7 Kernel, 1000Mhz, Performance Governor
OC CM7 Kernel, 1100Mhz, Performance Governor
I kept the gov on performance, to help rule out any differences between governors. Performance runs the CPU at full speed all the time, so it keeps the benches comparable. For every CPU speed/kernel change, i rebooted the system, and ran each bench once in the order listed. And the results!

The results speak alot, i think, and yet they don't. The big difference, is that the IO score on Quadrant tanks on the OC kernel, but is fine/better on every other test. Specifically, i noticed that file system writes takes much longer on the OC kernel, than the stock. 3D performance makes obvious gains with increasing clock speed, and other CPU / IO benches show no problem either.
The antutu bench failing at 1.1 is very odd, since my system has never shown any instability at this speed. It crashes almost immediately , where are 1.0Ghz makes it through just fine. Could it be my system is instable? Possibly...
just for the heck of it, i set the gov to interactive, and here is what i got (1100Mhz, OC kernel, Interactive Gov):
Antutu System benchmark:
Total Score: 1089
Memory: 481
CPU Integer: 701
CPU Float: 154
2D Graphics: 101
3D Graphics: 209
Database IO: 10
SD Card Write: 4.9 MB/s
SD Card Read: 10.4 MB/s
who knows....
Thus, I am left with this question: Is the Quadrant bench testing an IO function that no other bench i tried is, or is it testing something in a way no other bench does, and just doesn't like this kernel? Obivously, SOMETHING is going on, becuase the problem is measurable and repeatable. The kernel change showing the problem alludes to a possible issue, but other benches say that the likelyhood of noticing it is minimal.
That said, our device isn't the only one that seems like it has a problem with IO scores: http://androidforums.com/samsung-captivate/136969-quadrant-scores.html
Hopefully, this is a starting point for people, and might even help a dev or two pinpoint what might be happening. I am no expert, but am willing to help where i can.

Thanks for the bench scores. Hopefully its a starting point to understand the issue.

Wow.. many thanks for the awesome graph; it really makes things so much neater!
Also the guesses that it may be a problem with quadrant may pan out. I always thought the OC kernel seemed snappier as far as user interaction (especially launching the applications list w/ animations.)

The user interaction improvement is due to increased CPU clock and 2D performance. IO matters when you install or load something.

The performance increase I've experianced with the o/c kernal leads me to agree with your point about the quad benchmark numbers being off the mark. That said, I was wondering if your statement is based on a deeper understanding of what is causing the low io quadrant numbers, and if it is, that you would be willing to share your thoughts. Thanks.
I think the statement really is worth looking into - the performance variance should be explored; just because quadrant is the only bench that shows and issue, doesn't mean there isn't one in the system...
Divine_Madcat, just wanted to say I appreciated the way you analyzed the issue and presented your findings. I learned alot from your approach. Enjoying your post. I'll send a thanks your way next time I sign in from my web browser.

The OC Kernel. The OP was documenting something in detail to try to help out. There is a weird issue causing the OC kernel to show up slower than the stock in one benchmark. It's faster in all other benchmarks. There is probably something wrong with the benchmark.

Thanks for all the feedback guys. Chisleu, i would say you are correct, that it probably is the bench. Yet, there is just this small nagging part of me that wonder if quadrant isn't using something nothing else is, and found a hidden problem. Needless to say, i am not done looking at all this yet.

It is worth investigating though I must say it is low on my priority list. I don't put much weight in Quadrant and especially their I/O tests. Their I/O tests are known to be especially flaky.
When I get a chance, I will go through and remove the tweaks that are not in common with the CM7 kernel to see what is causing it. Unless someone beats me to it. *hint hint*
Thank you, Mr. Divine_Madcat! Hopefully you will continue your highly valuable benchmarking work with every significant CM7 nightly and RC, and Froyo/HC, to show the progress and better appreciate the work of our devs.
Quadrant marks peculiarities are, yes, puzzling. And they are not just in their absolute values, but the scatter of these between consequent benchmarkings.
Also, I know it's not the opportune time, but just to get into an understanding of a baseline FPS for OpenGL ES HW acceleration (or lack thereof), it might be worth the effort to do Neocore, at least on CM7 builds.
Thank you.

I got confused going into the kernel code. It looked like you guys only changed 8-10 lines of code from the B&N release. The last CVSystem I've used was CVS. heh. This new fangled "git" thingie is blowing my mind.
EDIT: NM... I wasn't seeing all the commits. Now I get it. Do we have to make config/menuconfig/whatever to setup the kernel, or are all the flags ready to go?
EDIT: Man I have some catching up to do. I remember when menuconfig was hot ****. The last kernel I built was 2.2.something IIRC.
Can't find the .config. Surely it's not hidden?
i know that quadrant puts a big emphasis on i/o score. just going from ext3 to ext4 on a archos 101 gave ~800-1000 pts.
scores have been around 2900 on quadrant for a device that feels slower than a galaxy tab.
I seem to have more touchscreen lag/miscalibration when using the oc kernal. It's only really apparent when i'm typing on the keyboard. I was using the stock kernal for about a week with no real issues. Is this something anyone else is experiencing? I was going to flash back to stock, but if it seems isolated, and i'll just flash the new nightly and the OC kernal on top of it again.

Thanks for the clarification. I take it you are referring to dalingrin. I think I recall the issue being addressed in a thread but I can't remember exactly what was said or where it was brought up. Do you have the threads post number by chance, since any observations on his part are worthy of serious consideration. Just hoping to learn something new here. Thanks in advance.
Web page refresh showed post by chisleu which quoted dalingrin on the io issue. If this was the post You were referring to then please ignore the above request.

kernel for overclocking gpu and cpu ?

is it possible to overclock GPU? when i had xoom the GPU was OCed to 400mhz from 300.. and with 1.6 ghz CPU it was super good..
with the touchwiz update Gtab is better even with the stock GPU and CPU but i still want to OC -especially- the GPU.. i believe it will help in the games.. for example dungeon hunter 2 hd is so laggy.. is it possible -and easy- to make a kernel just capable of OC ing for both GPU and CPU?
and one more thing; i think there are two limitations of GPU.. if the moving objects are not too fast the device tries to lock the FPS to 30, if they are fast enough it is limited with 60 FPS.. this is whan i can observe from quadrant test.. so, is it also possible to unlock this 30FPS limitation and let the GPU try to handle everything in 60 FPS?

[Q] qudrant for touchpad!!!

just my observation: Quadrant run for touchpad only gives score of around 2400... my nook color with 1.3ghz single core gives score of over 2600 all the time!!! i looked into the device info, it seems like it only using 1 core!!! does cm7 only recognizing one core??? what r ur guys thought??? is there a fix for it or any kernels that utilize both cores of touchpad!!!
The Quadrant results on the TP are skewed because the GPU code has not yet been implemented (or optimized) which primarily affects the FPS section (looks like is is only doing about 4 frames per second) where all the other graphics demos (especially the planet one) do 20-60 frames per second which is a 300%-600% improvement over the Nook Color running 1.2GHz.
I would be interested in other benchmarks that are not dependent on the GPU code.
try using Antutu - free from market
it separates the scores according to each test
(also shows total)
i got around 5000 - OC 1.7 ghz
Maybe it is because we are running an un-optimized alpha build...Don't worry about synthetic benchmarks anyway.
Both cores are already being used, what is your processor clocked too?
I'm completely aware benchmarks don't really mean much, but for curiosities sake, out of 3 runs, I averaged 3228 in quadrant. I am overclocked to 1782mhz ondemand.
I suggest you run SunSpider also.

Notes
"My ROM is faster than yours in arguement". Yes, I agree all ROM's out there have different readings and probably different glitches, performance, battery life and is also based on what apps you have installed. This is just the baseline because I use the same ROM for all benchmarks, but different kernels.
Numbers might vary , thats why I didnt include SD card test. Class 2,4,6 10 across different SD card sizes, and cluster block size varies. Antutu uses a 300MB file to test your speeds. For me, thats not concrete or consistent.
Give or take , I ran the test multiple amounts of times using same configuration only to see a variance of 50 points on total score, which is negligible
CORE2 is not enabled via Leedroid Tweaks(I prefer battery life). I am convinced explicitly turning on second CORE will greatly improve Antutu benchmarks though. Perhaps?
Voltages affect battery life, indirectly. Adjusting your voltage lower could make it unstable, however save battery. As you can see, the stock kernel voltages are the SAFEST HTC configurations. Lower at your own risk.
By saying glitches in gaming, it usually means it has problems rendering, supporting multi touch, artifacts or just any deformation of 2D/3D. It can be minor, and can be major. I have yet to specify to what degree. NEW: A reboot usually cures this problem and yet to fully test it. Another cause of glitches can be caused by Go Locker. Freezing or uninstalling this app does remove graphic glitches.
I linked direct downloads only if the developer and releaser direct linked it. Its best to visit the thread of discussion and read there for more information. Links might die and get replaced, removed and I will monitor as much as I can
Slide to wake kernel sources were finally implemented in Anryl 10.03 above, and leedroid 5.x.x above. Use Ponury Gesture Mod from [email protected] to get it.
I disregarded Smartbench 2012 (Gaming Index) because they are all similiar, with a variance of 100 points at most between each kernel, and each clock speed whether 1.2Ghz or 1.5Ghz
Battery voltage is between 3.2v (0%) to 4.335mv (100%). HTC seems to report voltage correctly, but not -ma drain. For example, at 4.1mv battery is at 90% and 4.0mv, battery is 80% (consistently)

-0 uv from unity3b 1510 to 1782 (i left it at stock, this is overclocking already and i dont support it, neither wish to lower voltages here to maintain stability)
and imported to Leedroid and Unity3b
I saved this profile, and applied to every kernel and seems fine for me

CPU SPEED: 1.5GHZ VOLTAGE: 1175mv
CPU SPEED: 1.2GHZ VOLTAGE: 1050mv
Battery: 99-90% seems to drain quickly, then 90 below to 0 drains slowly and normal. However, during use, the system is really responsive, and battery drain is slow being consistent. I noticed that the system reports the wrong % of battery as well, making occasional jumps between %. I evaluated use for a whole 12 hours (9am-9pm) and battery was at about 30% remaining. Pretty decent since it was out most of the time replying whats app
Battery Test : 1% every 55 minutes during idle.
Estimated ma: -12ma-29ma
Movie Test : 100% to 64%
Performance : Feels really as the fastest, exiting and entering apps. Probably the fastest in my observation and gut feel. However for this performance, I believe some battery life was compromised. Im not sure but its definitely apparent.
Gaming : So far no issues
Issues : Setting 1.89Ghz immediately causes freeze. Well thats expected

Battery: Seems to be great, but only had 2 days to test.
Battery Test : 1% every 80 minutes during idle.
Estimated ma: -9 to -15 ma drain. Second tests proves this is very consistent, and good. Kernel enters "deep sleep" rapidly
Movie test : 100% to 69%
Performance : Decent and responsive. Other kernels are a tad faster, but its not even noticeable
Gaming: Slight bugs in games. Glitches. Artifacts occurred. Multitouch issues.

CPU SPEED: 1.5GHZ VOLTAGE: 1125 mv
CPU SPEED: 1.2GHZ VOLTAGE: 1025 mv
Battery: Seems to be amazing, without Ponury Gesture during light/medium use. No erratic battery drops. Definitely can last a full day on EDGE. Observed that the kernel gets stuck at MIN CPU speed for 7 seconds after waking up from DEEP SLEEP. OC DAEMON is supposed to fix this.
Battery Test : 1% every 60 minutes during idle. (Updated and second test done)
Estimated ma : -14 to -19ma estimated drain
Movie test : 100% to 67%
Performance : Feels really fast but comes in 2nd compared to Leedroid 5.3.8
Gaming : OK, better than anryl 10.06. Smooth and decent all around.
Issues : CPU speed gets stuck at MIN FREQ for about 7-10 seconds after waking up from deep-sleep. This is where OC-daemon is supposed to fix, hence its a known issue in most kernels. Only Smartassv2 fixes this 50% of the time, and Smartassv2 is not stable for our EVO3D

CPU SPEED: 1.5GHZ VOLTAGE: x mv
CPU SPEED: 1.2GHZ VOLTAGE: x mv
Battery: In testing the Idle drain was HIGH. Make no mistake, idle for 2-3 hours easily drained 10% which is about 3% per hour. This was during sleep!
Battery Test : x% every x minutes during idle
Estimated ma : -x ma to -x ma
Movie Test : x% to x%
Performance : Feels slower than Leedroid 5.4.0, faster than Anryl 10.08
Gaming : After reboot, games seems to work fine. Multitouch issues go away after proper reboot.
Issues : Secondary core seems to hit 1.53GHZ even when set to lower frequencies, and INTERACTIVE. In some situations, CORE0 is at 384mhz, but CORE1 is at 1530mhz. While this is not always, you also want to always have your secondary CORE at the same speed as what you configured the MAX.
Its the only kernel with SMARTASSV2, and its own INTELLIANTHRAX governor which previously were reported to be unstable as well.
Sweep to wake causes a battery pull in any case

I will follow up the thread and update as I have time, or as long as I have the same ROM (which I dont usually flash too often) or same phone
If you dislike my post, cross-reference, findings, let me know, especially if you have been affected by this post I will do the necessary to adjust it. My apologies if I have done so in advance.
If you disagree with my information above, let me know and I will add, change or remove it.
If you found something interesting about any of the kernels, discuss and let me know. I am sure others will want to know as well
I am not responsible for anything above, and damage, warranty, legal and etc is on your own self doing. I will remove them immediately when it affects any of the mentioned above.
I dont claim these are 100% accurate, and variance might be there. Use at own discretion, especially voltages.
Undervolting below HTC stock mV, and overclocking above 1.5Ghz is at your own peril. By default, our CPU are clocked at 1.5Ghz. HTC just downclocked it to 1.2Ghz. Anything above that, and you are on your own.
384mhz seem to be the most stable low point. 192mhz caused random reboots or bugs during lockscreen, in call etc.
Sony XLOUD is really LOUD. However, restoring using the uninstall.zip breaks all AUDIO from Music apps, or beats related.

Whats this for ?
Archived information, which is no longer needed in Opening Post
Information here would no longer be updated as they are not the latest kernels. We all like latest, but my point is that sometimes, latest doesnt mean best.
Though not latest, they might prove to be stable and better than others but would add much more work to compare each time.

Estimated ma: -9 to -12 ma drain
Gaming : Better than 3.60. OK so far.
Issues : Noticing data drops. Not all the time, but there are..
Random reboots currently persists in Leedroid ROM. Not on mine, yet :D

For all general awareness,
Definition of "..already kanged.." from Urban Dictionary
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Kanged
1. To have one's developer code and work taken, manipulated, rebranded, and re-released by someone else with no credit.
Ultimate Droid kanged CyanogenMod by taking CM's code, theming the ROM, and then re-releasing it without taking out CM-specific easter eggs, and stripping out the credit and changelog for the CyanogenMod developers.
2. The act of having your meeting hijacked, in favor of a convoluted and meandering presentation of impractical concepts that can never be implemented. Also a term for a discussion that impacts you, but does not include you.
"I got Kanged at the new business presentation yesterday."

Yeah, very cool Idea.
That way it'll get a little clearer for the people which kernel to choose --> performance wise
I did something similar about a year ago for my DesireHD --> << press hard on this one >> (Linpack only).
Just one thing:
Maybe Antutu "only" isn't representative enough?
It is a synthetic benchmark isn't it.?
Does somebody have an idea how to bench a little closer to real life circumstances?
I see what you are getting at, but how a kernel works for one person does not say that much. When running antutu with the Anthrax V2 kernel @ 1.5Ghz I score 5829 (without SD) which is considerably higher than what you scored. In the end every device is different and will therefore score different and work better and worse with certain settings..
nice idea dude, but benchmarks are nothing you should believe in
Too bad you can't include chad's Qualcomm series in your comparaison. Oh well, Xda's loss.
Very good idea. Which Anthrax v2 kernel did you use: SHOOTERU-GSM-SENSE-AnthraX-RLS001a.zip or GSM-SENSE-AnthraX-2.6.38.6-REV_005.zip? I believe GSM-SENSE-AnthraX-2.6.38.6-REV_005.zip is much more stable than SHOOTERU-GSM-SENSE-AnthraX-RLS001a.zip.
Thanks for putting in so much work. I would be more interested in a battery drain benchmark. But good work.
Nice thread. I also am interested in seeing benchmarks for battery performance.
Thanks for time and effort put in, it helps give an idea of what each kernel is capable of.

Yeah every ROM is different. Every device performs differently with different ROM's ,
Best ROM here would beat my ROM out flat, but I used the same platform to test to give the difference between all of them Thats all

i'm aware that benchmarks ARE NOTHING, honestly. Made out of curiosity and to cure yours as well. They are a good representation only. Actual life performance varies big time, ask Mr. Iphone He had bad benchmarks everywhere and yet performed really well.

i dont have v1. i joined EVO3D forum very much AFTER this was hidden
my opinion is that I use the same test bed on all tests. Meaning, if you use another ROM and test , it should be similiar for u as well for all different kernels, maybe +200 +300 more since its generally faster
perhaps my ROM has bugs in gaming, but AFAIK its quite toned down in terms of modifications and enhancements
I'm heading out, will modify this later

I found that its hard to measure battery performance but so far i spotted an app called Drain guard on XDA which measures drain only during idle for u.
However % drains of each kernel varies greatly, some jumping a few % and staying at one % for ridiculous amounts of time has made me drop that idea, for now.
Need to find something more consistent, such as running a game for 10 minutes and measure drain, but even that won't be accurate since % is reported wrongly and voltage is jumps up and down. I know because i monitor this day and night. Any ideas?

I found that kernel in the non-gpl folder, haven't tried it yet. Today I switch to Evo 3D as my primary phone, I am still using the stock kernel.
Hey guys am a new Evo User, come from Desire !
Is there an chance to get more information of the old kernels banned because of qualcomm?
What are the significant differences to the new ones.
Would be very glad for a private message with infos, or maybe somebody who has is it already is able to send it (via Mail)

Please update with those custom kernel settings:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=21880484&postcount=4514
Stable 100%, no reboots, autobacklight works on calls, no lags at all (games & tiping - set the MAX CPU Load to 80).
Tested to 1,51Ghz OC - higher could be unstable - not tested the UV settings, though .
Everything ON, except BT and GPS - u can see the battery life ...
Thanks,
updated with 1.03, and added you into the Unity3b section for user input.
what a great post there man amazing detailed information
i cant seem to find any other kernels other than the one on chad.goodman's site so i assume those were taken down already
missing 1.18Ghz screenshot though, but I would assume 1000mv, or 1025mv?
I doubt Antutu Benchmark will tell kernel's graphic performance, since its 2D and 3D benchmarks are too weak for modern devices.(most of phones have ~60fps cap.)
I recommend use Nenamark2 and Smartbench 2012 with "Performance" governor for more accurate results.
Added to my next TODOLIST for you
Thanks

Xperia Mini ST15i Overclocking Stats and Questions

Hi there XDA Community! I'm new here ... but readed some topics. I hope this is in the right category.
I first want to say thanks for al devs and for their Tutorials, Kernels, Roms, Themes, Scripts and others
So, I made this post for anyone who would want to do OC to his Xperia Mini ST15i ( Smultron ).
I have here some results, with details ... but a question too.
Kernel: Panic Kernel with addons + 3D JB Adreno Drivers
ROM: HyperbeamCream 3.0 + Some Pimp My Rom tweaks
I did some benchmarks with different OCs... but also with different Kernel and... actually ... ROM:
Kernel: Mini Kernel that came with Ginger Extreme ( I think ... EDIT: I think it was Rage Kernel ... but not sure ) ... Which support OC at Max 2GHZ and Voltage settings ( Now, I thinks this is a must )
ROM: GingerExtreme ( Tweaked with Pimp My Rom and Supremacy Script v3 )
1200 mAh
1017 Mhz ~ near 1400 Score in AnTuTu Benchmark ( Only CPU and RAM )
RAM: 362 points
CPU Integer: 732 points
CPU float-points: 322 points
1200 mAh
1113 Mhz
RAM: 380 points
CPU Integer: 781 points
CPU float-points: 339 points
1200 mAh
1209 Mhz
RAM: 413 points
CPU Integer: 864 points
CPU float-points: 374 points
1200 mAh
1305 Mhz
RAM: 456 points
CPU Integer: 918 points
CPU float-points: 400 points
1200 mAh
1401 Mhz
RAM: 483 points
CPU Integer: 969 points
CPU float-points: 429 points
1250 mAh ( Don't know why ... even if I modified the value, it still was stuck at 1250 )
1516 Mhz ~ Over 2000 points in AnTuTu Benchmark ( Onlu CPU and RAM )
RAM: 512 points
CPU Integer: 1064 points
CPU float-points: 437
Now, I also did some OC with this ROM and Kernel ... was different ( in some ways .. but, at 1.6 Ghz I got scared... in 3D Benchmark the screen got a green color ... :-? , still, no damage on my phone, and I think it wasn't overheated ... )
Panic Kernel + HyperbeamCream ( as said at begin )
???? mAh
1401 Mhz
RAM: 526 points
CPU Integer: 1030 points
CPU float-points: 437 points
Also got near 83 FPS in 2D Graphics and 60 FPS in 3D
Then ... after the problem with 3D Test ( Now I think it was a misunderstanding but still ... )
???? mAh
1612 Mhz - 2197 AnTuTu Score ( Only CPU and RAM )
RAM:574 points
CPU Integer: 1137 points
CPU float-points: 486 points
Now ... Got some questions ... I think my battery is 1200 mAh ... it would cause damage to run an OC with more than 1200 mAh? I'm not sure about this ...
Anyone Knows there an ICS ROM that support voltage modification ?
I searched on Google, Youtube, XDA, and Didn't found very much documentation on Xperia Mini ST15i Overclocking ... so I'm posting these here for anyone interested ... even, a general topic about that, would be good.
Also played NFS Most Wanted 2 on my 1.5 OC GingerExtreme, it was running very smooth ... I think it had around 30 FPS ... even when I was near opponents, the FPS didn't drop!
