EDIT: I typed in ls /sys/kernel/debug and hit enter in a terminal, with and without root and nothing outputs

If im understanding the article I just read on 2nd init, its pointless to run this unless you have a rom to install or are building a rom that uses it. This mod doesn't currently do anything for basic users and there is no need to have it currently. This mod is for serious developers only, am I right naven? I mean what's the point of hijacking the init if you have nothing to overwrite the boot process with? This is a very important mod , don't get me wrong and im very thankful for it.

Pretty much. That's why I didn't bother posting a long post about it. If you know how to use this, you can do pretty much anything shy of flashing a kernel or recovery.
Awesome work, thank you! Hopefully some devs can put this to use.
Hey Naven, have you been able or tried to get a hold of Dragonzkiller to see where he might be at with his work on CM7 or if he is still working on it at all?? Would be nice to know... And thanks again on the hard work to get this working finally!!!
Cool.... what was the new signature for execve()? Sorry I didn't log in to notice earlier =( You should post source
Glad you got it working!!
I haven't looked at it in awhile but dragonzkiller has his source on github you could probably Google it and it'll tell you if he's been active at all or you could even get the source. Last i heard i think it was the just the 2nd init that was causing problems.

Honestly, I think that guy was just a sham, no offense, but I tried to contact him so that I could fork his code and assist in getting Cyanogen, but he never contacted me back, and the code on his github hasn't even been touched for like two months.
So, we have 2nd init, but no one is doing anything with it. Sure wish I knew more about how to move CM7 to our device. I have some free time but no knowledge.
Also, I haven't noticed this 2nd-init being discussed on other forums. Shouldn't you post it in as many places aa possible to gather more interest? Just a thought.

Please don't ever say that no one is doing anything with this. I am. CM7 is what I'm trying to do and with a dedicated version for the x2 (which my current version is a port of the ATRIX), I might be able to do something. The ONLY thing keeping me from continuing with CM7 is the new init script for it. Right now, I'm stuck though until kernel.org is back up and running.
I'm wondering, with 2nd init, would it be possible to boot into tenfars recovery without having to plug your phone in? If so, how hard would it be to implement?

Sorry. No offense intended. I think we had all got the impression that you were just blowing smoke or had dropped off the face of the planet because no one had been able to contact you regarding your efforts. Please, please, please continue. CM7 is our only ticket to having MIUI on this bad boy some day, and I am eager for that day to come. In the meantime, if there is any way I can help, hit me up. I know a lot about coding and debugging, but no real experience with Android ROMs, so maybe I can help...maybe not. Just let me know.
so is this different than navenedrob's other hack? is this something I should flash over Eclipse with the init.d hack?

No, you don't need this (for what you are thinking, specifically). They are not the same thing.

Anyone willing to help can help. I never said no one could. Too many people on here want stuff with no dev'ing from themselves. I have been in contact with a few notable devs that I have helped me, and I will thank them. Now that I have the source back, I have started porting over the new 2nd-init into CM7DX2.

Hey guys, I'm going to try to start to learn android rom development, and thought maybe porting a AOSP rom fromt the sensation would be a cool task to work with. Right now, I think the Sensation is the closest to our Amaze, but it's CM7 build is lacking. Either way, it will be a ton easier to port CM7 than CM9 for a complete noob, but that doesn't mean I don't need your help!
I like to keep an open mind and workflow on stuff (I collaborate musically like this) so anyone willing to help or learn something can hop right in and I would appreciate it!
Some links I'm using for learning / porting:
Code:
It took a while, but I finally tracked down a mirror for the latest and last build of CM7 for the sensation:

I'm going to be using this kitchen:

Found this guid for porting a rom. It's ment to be from CM7 to AOSP from the same phone, but it's worth a shot!

I appreciate you trying... But what makes you think the Amaze and Sensation are similar? From what I've read, Devs say they are COMPLETELY different phones.
Just thought I'd give you a heads up.
Best of luck to you though... I hope you get it working!

They are very different.... thus it has been a pain in the ass to port roms to it, but since you dont have to mess with changing the screen/resolution to match it, it makes it a little easier

Ok, yea, the internals are different. So far as I can tell the sensation has an S2 snapdragon and the Amaze has an S3. I don't know if I can even get this thing to boot, but I think it will be a great learning experience nevertheless!

You mean the rom? As of now im just going to try to move some drivers, libs, and kernel around and see what happens.
I got CM9 booting by just editing the build.prop from the sensation ported a ROM think it was CM9 but touch screen and features didn't work.

Woah! That's quite an accomplishment! You mind helping me with this port then?
And by editing the build prop, did you just pretty much copy the hardward identifiers from a stock ROM from the Amaze?

Hmmmm, I'm wondering how bad this risk is? Like will editing the build prop, and keeping an existing kernel brick the phone? Because by my understanding I can ALWAYS boot into the bootloader, then recovery before it even touches the files that I'm injecting
Plus my phones S-ON, not that this means anything, because I have fastboot!
From what I've read, again, there have been 0 bricked s=on Amaze devices. There have been soft bricks, but ppl have always been able to fix in fastboot

Trying to copy a stock ruu rom for some porting! Just not enough space
Alright, so I used dsixda's kitchen to port over the libs and some files. I then made an attempt to get the update-script to install and it seems as if it went through. Now I'm stuck on the white htc screen. I'm uploading as we speak, if anyone can help I would be grateful!

There's the soft brick my friend. Try to boot into recovery and restore. If you can't get into recovery, you will have to re-install a recovery using fastboot or adb. You can find the instructions on X's site in Amaze>Development> and find a recovery... It will be labeled "hard way" but its not really hard at all. It's easier than soft bricking your phone
Sent from my HTC_Amaze_4G using Tapatalk 2 Beta-2
And this is One of the reason the Amaze lacks development... It's a lil more difficult to dev on... Combine that with s=on and a phone only marketed in North America and you get a ghost town forum

Thanks man! But not needed It's just installing to the system partition and one other, but both are active only after the bootloader, so I just hold down the "volume down" button while turning on, scroll to recovery and restore my backup. No trouble at all! In fact, since I'm basing this off the stock kernel, I don't think I need to install one until I can get it booting
Thanks for the help again dude, seriously, get that screen and help me with this

My phone is the I-777, so what gives?
What rom were you coming from?
Sent from my SGH-I777 using Tapatalk 2
At first, ICScrewed 2.1 with Entropy's kernel.
Then I tried flashing Task's AOKP, THEN CM7 again, but no luck.
Go back to one of the samsung gingerbread roms and wipe and then flash cm7. You can't go from ics to cm7 will always get that error.

I was on ICScrewed 2.1. Tried flashing CM7. No luck. THEN I tried flashing AOKP, then CM7. Don't know why I did that second part, but I was hoping it'd work somehow. Nonetheless, my first attempt coming from gingerbread didn't work.

Not positive because I haven't been in this situation, but I think ICScrewD will show in build.prop as an i9100, which may be causing the updater script to fail, cause it's looking for i777. If you flash back to stock GB before trying to flash CM7, that might solve the issue. Or see the other post a few above yours with info on removing the asserts from the updater script.
Somebody correct me if I'm wrong here...

+1. I always get this kind of error when flashing an AOSP/AOKP ROM from a Sammy based ROM. I keep a CM9 kernel handy. All I do is flash the CM9 kernel (or AOKP kernel) - reboot into recovery - then flash the new ROM.
Hope this helps.
Unzip the cm9 update zip and go to META-INF, COM,GOOGLE,ANDROID, "updater-script" and open it with a text editor. Then delete/remove the beginning lines that say anything about "get prop" so now you will start with "package extract file". Now save it and then move it back into the same location and overwrite the original one. Zip the folder back up and flash in cwm.
BEFORE
and AFTER PICS.
This will allow you to flash it coming from all/almost ANY ROM. You will not need to do it any other time unless coming from another from again. So if you want to try other rooms just make a Android backup of cm9, switch to another from. If then you want to come back to cm9 just restore the Android backup then flash a newer nightly and you will have no issues. Or you can start again with removing the get prop check any time before flashing it if you don't want to save a Android backup.

Protip: If your new thread was going well, with no flaming, do NOT ruin it by calling other users names.
Didn't mention specific names, so it's not that big of a deal. But since we're on the subject of "respect “, you moderators should also punish the "high posters" or even devs if they're acting unaccordingly and causing problems by bashing essentially. The reason for that last post was to make a statement. People should be like Rock Ratt and be helpful and respectful, not (insert whatever insult you want).

Using Odin to go back to stock would probably be a best way to do it, but if you're dead set on a ROM you could look here:

And specifically here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=24149078&postcount=224
Hopefully that link still works, but if it doesn't I think that Moped Ryder has a thread where he rehosted those files. You'll have to look around for it though.
Nice thing about that ROM is that it comes rooted, and busyboxed for you.

I know your asking for a GB ROM but you should really move on, Chimera 1.1 is the future. Go ahead and install Chimera 1.1 ROM, if you don't like this ROM then something is seriously wrong. I would recommend Platypus kernel if you do switch over. Chimera comes with a custom installer with multiple options for kernels, apps, keyboards etc. The custom installer is awesome, you can literally set it up to install whatever you want and whatever you DONT want. www.team-passion.com is where you will find it, try it seriously! Worst thing that happens is you don't like it but its really the best ROM i have ever used, period. If you do install, choose apex launcer or even samsung launcher if you want the samsung look, the cndlauncher has problems so do not install it! O yea, 911 has been proven to work on chimera also, try it dude.

I have no problem suggesting an ICS ROM, but I would like to see more folks at least warning of the ICS Encryption Unsuccessful bug.

From what Ive read it literally encrypts partitions making odin or Jtag useless. The "fix" is actually a work around from what I see. You substitute your external sdcard for android required partitions.

But it doesn't indicate that 911 works. One person on a forum does does indicated that it works. Each build varies and each area varies from what Ive seen.
I have no problem suggesting an ICS ROM, but I would like to see more folks at least warning of the ICS Encryption Unsuccessful bug.

I know nothing about this bug to be honest. I saw a thread named encryption bug but didn't think it was worth reading since I haven't experienced it, knock on wood.

No to go too far off topic, but if you are running ANY ICS rom, you need to be aware of the risks of this bug. It doesn't descriminate. Just yesterday, someone Odin'd to JFD and flashed all the way to ICZen (which has been the least effected ROM) and got it. Fortunately he was able to somehow get it back to full working status, but if you are unaware to what this bug is, I suggest at the very least to make a backup of your internal_sd. The internal is what gets Encrypted and right now there is NO key and only a handful of people have come back from it. There is no solution or concrete cause for this bug.
Good Luck.

Your being an asshole, that's all there is to it. Chimera is a blend of AOKP and CM9, I figured the dude might like it so I let him know.

Yea I hear you, I'm thinking about going back to a GB ROM myself lol. That's a very nasty bug that I want no part of.

From what Ive read it literally encrypts partitions making odin or Jtag useless. The "fix" is actually a work around from what I see. You substitute your external sdcard for android required partitions.

JBQ from Google confirmed in a post on a Google group that Android will assume any partition that doesn't contain valid data or zero is encrypted:
JBQ said:
Yup, with encryption support in ICS, Android has become a lot more
picky about having all the filesystems initialized with valid data,
and mistakenly assumes that anything that's not zero or valid is
encrypted, refusing to go any further.
In Gingerbread and before, anything that wasn't valid was expected to
be invalid, and Android would just re-initialize it, regardless of
whether it was zero or not.
You're lucky you didn't have to work with Honeycomb, where zeros were
considered encrypted.

If you read the EU threads, it's obvious life goes on post-EU. I got hit a while back, partitioned an external sdcard, and then used the emmc / sdcard swap to deal with the loss of access to my internal sd. If I get hit again, it's much easier to manage the situation with a portable ext sdcard. For one person, it was as simple as a chkdsk from a pc fixing the issue without losing any data.
Everyone's risk tolerance level will vary, but the benefits / performance and dev progression of ICS far out weigh any reason for me to consider downgrading. Imo, it's nasty, yes ... yet a manageable situation as long as you know the risks (and be proactive about backing up your data to another device or cloud acct).
Since EU, I religiously keep my TiBu data sync'd in Dropbox and consciously steer towards apps with online sync / backup capabilities, etc.
Moral of the story is ... once you go thru it, it's only as painful as how well you've heeded this man's sage advice:

That requires either a CM guy to have our phone and decide to develop for it, or one of our amazing dev's to port it. Since we just got the ability to unlock the bootloader, It'll take a little while for things to ramp up. Baby steps.

How hard can it be to port CM?? I ask because I am considering attempting to do this over thanksgiving... I never ported CM before and I don't have much of an understanding of the Android Source code... But I can get my way around basic source code editing, if I have a lot of help... So, if someone can tell me how to start porting this thing, I may attempt to do so over thanksgiving.. but don't get your hopes up, I am just a novice dude here...
I think there are some porting guides on xda somewhere for cm9 try looking at those. Im willing to test builds by the way.

I would imagine it would be fairly difficult, the rezound took some time to get AOSP on it.

Ya gotta start somewhere. Good luck!
good luck my friend.
prepare for many sleepless, banging head against the wall - nights/mornings.
What Andy said lol. Also, look in the rez forums, there are a few developers there who have already encountered some of the issues you may and they may be able to help you (particularly Chad)

Hehe I have a Jellybean AOKP test build available. Tester needs S-ON bootloader unlocked. Not S-Off, cause I don't want to brick anyone. Also need to be able to get/send me a logcat of the build. PM me.

dmeadows013 said something about a build being available but not quite sure if he was being serious or not. Anyway, I have a plan cooking up. I will download source and try to compile it, but fair warning I am a total newb to aosp deving and it may take forever, or never, to make a working AOSP build. I'm getting myself a new laptop which should help me build this thing. So far I put it off as my primary machine is tied up doing my regular work and with this spare laptop, I can do the hell I want while doing my regular work. Multitasking at its best!
Also, I really want to get some pointers on how to setup the build for a new device. I know that if all we are trying to do is build for a device that is already supported, then you already have the necessary files to compile it for that device. But, what I don't know is how to set up the build environment for a new device. Someone with some know how will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
