Dammit Dammit Dammit! lol I have had the Dev preview on another SSD since the day it launched, and guess what happens? My Win7 Ultimate SSD crashed, so I feel all high and mighty I start diving into Win8 for real instead of just playing around and BAM Moto Drivers don't work with Win8 yet because they "Don't recognize the OS". My computer basically told me to get ****ed and that I can't root my brothers phone. I refuse to go back to Win7, guess I will go play on someone else computer!
Just thought I would give you guys a heads up, in case you wanted to migrate onto the Dev Preview or an Alpha/Beta. This is where it stands right now.
Windows 8 Dev Preview has Windows 7 compatibility mode... Right click the installer and set them to install that way. Let us know if that works....

Damn.... That's a pretty crappy bro... I tried it out on a spare HDD I had for a few days and the whole Metro interface being designed for a touch screen device just got cumbersome and I only tried installing some basic stuff like office, chrome, skype, and other things like that....
Most software works(even processor intensive CAD/Revit, Adobe CS5 products), and I rarely even see the Metro UI, I don't use it for anything. I just have my desktop extended across both screens.
True... I have an old dell lappy I might throw it on there and play with it some more.... Maybe that will make it heat up less....
I had to revert back to Windows 7 (no big deal) because I had trouble SBFing in Windows 8.

Yea, for the same reason, lol. I am not too worried though. I am upgrading to the ReZound on Monday. But, I thought I would post this. I am sure there is someone smart enough to adapt the drivers, or knows another way we are not thinking of.
Could probably always partion the drive and have 7 or xp on another partition...
Hopefully this will be fixed when they decide to release Windows 8.

I have 4 500GB HDD's 1 1TB HDD and 2 256GB SSD's. I have plenty of space for Win7, but after being on Windows 8 there is no going back. Not to mention I don't want to set up an entire system just to root a phone I will only have for 3 more days
I was thinking about trying that other root method because it doesn't say anything about drivers, although, that might just be an obvious given. We will see, and I will let you guys know probably tomorrow. I am a Veteran, got things to do today that don't involve sitting in front of a computer lol.

I found elsewhere on the net a solution to windows 8 problem...
Extract the usb drivers from the motorola's driver MSI using Uniextract to a easy to find folder, then go into device manager and find the 'unknown usb device' and manually update drivers by pointing to the drivers you just extracted. Hope all that makes sense....
I should note that while this method has gotten me farther than I had previously, and allowed RSDlite to work SBF'ing my phone back to stock, but it seems ADB doesn't want to play nicely with windows 8. I've tried windows compatability mode, run as admin. no luck so far.
I don't have much of a clue of what I'm talking about but maybe its worth a shot...what if you ran a virtual of 7 inside of 8? Would you be able to use the drivers that way?

I'm in the same boat with you, it sucks. So far, every other program and software I've installed has been compatible with the dev preview, but not drivers. But you don't have a lab top, or another computer sitting around to use to root it? Either that, or going back to Windows 7 is the only way to solve it, that I know of

Nah, I basically have a super computer I built 4 years ago while in South Korea. A couple weeks ago my SSD with Win7 Ultimate went down, and I like Win8 so much more, there was no turning back. I have a recovery I could throw onto another SSD or HDD, but it's too much effort, especially for only a "temporary" root.

That's true, so are you just gonna wait for an s-off method? I don't yet have the phone, but by the time I do, I'm just gonna use my school lab top to root it. But building your own computer? I would really love to do that one day, sounds accomplishing
lol, I have honestly been a computer geek since I was 5/6 I turn 24 X-Mas eve, so I have been doing it a LONG time. I made a killing building this over there. At the time, I priced the parts total cost equivalent in the US was $4,800. I spent $1,300, and have since upgraded my monitors, but that was still only $400. That was 4 years ago, my Windows experience rating is still 7.2 out of 7.9.
Would you be willing to use a thumb drive and boot into ubuntu? Most hacks have a linux equivalent at some point.

A common theme I seem to see around here is those who want to S-Off but have the wrong OS. I'm not sure why this is a problem as the unlimited.io team lays out the linux option pretty clearly, but yet still many complain of having the wrong OS..So, here you go. I'll try to lay it out as simply as I can for those who maybe just don't understand.
This is the set up for building a bootable USB drive.
First off, go here and download the latest Ubuntu Desktop ISO image :
http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/thank-you?release=latest&bits=32&distro=desktop&status=zeroc
Now download Universal USB installer from here :
http://www.pendrivelinux.com/downloads/Universal-USB-Installer/Universal-USB-Installer-1.9.2.4.exe
Ensure that your USB drive is Fat16/Fat32/NTFS formatted. The USB installer is very easy to use. Just select your ISO and your flashdrive and click install. It does all the work.
Once the drive is completed safely eject your flash drive and shut down your PC. You need to set your PC to boot from USB. This method might be different for you than it was for me. My laptop I tap F9 while booting. You will have to check into this for your particular machine.
Once you have the the USB booting you will be presented with a few options. Just pick Run Live (I think it's the first and default option). This will boot you into a fully fuctional Linux 32bit desktop. Just what you need to S-OFF! From here just go to the Unlimited site and follow their directions to the letter. Do all this and you should be S-Off in about an hours time.
If this is laid out somewhere else, Mods feel free to delete. If you found it to be helpful, hit the thanks. Be well fellow tweakers.
P.S. This makes no changes to your PC. Once done shut down, remove the pen drive, and boot normally to Windows.

You may want to change the title of your thread. I was not expecting this at all when I opened it up. I was expecting a question. Maybe something like 'How to get Ubuntu to obtain S-Off' or something of that nature.

Well, me too..but my machine is Windows 7 64bit and after all the warnings I didn't want to chance any screw ups. After running the live Ubuntu session I was amazed at how easy it was. Figured I'd share the love for those who may not understand how easy it really is.

This should be common sense for those used to Linux but I forgot and it took me a while to figure out:
Make sure you are running the Racun tools from a drive that is Linux-formatted (using ext3 or ext4 for example). Otherwise, you will not be able set the proper permissions and you may encounter errors like I did. * facepalm *
I just ran it through Windows 7 64 bit with no Linux...it was easy as pie.

Yup, another Win7 64bit user here. I've obtained s-off on both of my Evo LTEs using that setup. Went perfectly smooth and I didn't have to run anything twice or do anything manually. Was like it was a made for Win7 64bit!!
That said, it is super easy to make a LiveCD. I have a LiveCD and have used it to boot in to Ubuntu multiple times. I just wanted to see how far along it would get. I was pleasantly surprised that it finished, and was using successful as well!! After one Evo LTE was a success, I ran it on the second one as well!

I actually used Windows 8 Pro 64 Bit. Everything fine except for step 14. My device was not being recognized. I used Ubuntu (just for step 14) and bingo!
Live usb works but last I checked Unlimited did not support live usb so if you run into problems they will be very reluctant to help

Correct! The last time I checked as well, Team Unlimited does not support this method. I believe that it's due to your system's response speeds. When it's reading from a USB Stick/Drive it will be slower than when reading from a disc. I could be totally off base here, as this is just my own thoughts and I haven't heard Team Unlimited say. I'm simply relating my response to the reason 64bit isn't supported. People were saying that the Team just didn't want to take the time to test 64bit systems, which is completely incorrect!! The drivers needed to achieve s-off simply don't function properly on 64bit systems (and take longer to react, if I'm remembering this correctly).

Disclaimer: Just because myself and others have been successful using 64bit does NOT mean that everyone, or anyone else for that matter, will have success using a 64bit system. If you are not comfortable with your phone messing up during the process and no one being willing to help/assist you then do NOT use Team Unlimited's tools on a 64bit system! Team Unlimited will not assist you if you're using a 64bit system (and yes, they WILL be able to tell). As long as you comply to their simple requests, if you need their help at any point (before, after, or during) use of their tools, then Team Unlimited will happily assist you on their IRC channel!

I say this because I don't want anyone getting in to a situation with their phone where they get stuck, confused, or anything, and are not able to go directly to the developer of the tools for help! I really just want everyone to have a good experience with their Evo LTE and wish everyone good luck in everything/anything they do with their Evo LTE!! I remember my first Android experience, so I know what it's like to be new to Android and not fully understanding all of the terminology, how the operating system works, or what system pieces rely on what to function properly. While I had been unlocking and flashing WinMo phones for a while, Android is a different animal and could be a little overwhelming in the beginning. Plus, think of it like this - the more that people enjoy this phone then the more they will tell a friend, or someone will simply overhear them talking about it and become intrigued themselves. Thus, increasing Androids user base(and hopefully hurting Apple ) and maybe even improving HTC's profits!!

I didn't realize that USB was not supported. After checking the site again I noticed that it indeed mentions a live CD but doesn't talk about using USB. I'm going to ask a mod to remove or close this thread due to this coming to my attention. I don't want anyone having issues at my hands.

I'm trying to run CASUAL on my macbook; it starts up fine, begins to run, and puts my phone into Download mode, then hangs up. The phone never leaves Download mode (with the android logo, says "Downloading...do not turn off target!!"). I've tried both ports on my MB, tried using my OEM cable and my Nexus 7 cable, and I'm at a loss. Do I need to put my phone in ADB mode (voldown+home+power) first, THEN run CASUAL? I've updated Java, rebooted phone and mac, and made sure I'm running the latest mac-enable update for CASUAL.
Any help would be awesome!!

my thoughts also.
If it's getting to Download mode it has to be set to debugging, because it wouldn't get the adb commands to reboot otherwise. I had the same issue on my Kubuntu machine and never found a fix. I ended up doing on on a Win7 laptop instead (because my Win8 desktop was failing too).

I am definitely in debugging mode. That was one of the first things I turned on when I got my phone. haha
I'm still getting the hangup. I think Adam said CASUAL for mac is working for some, but others are having the same problem as I am. I just figured I was the only one, since no one posted on the forum about it.
I honestly think there is some dependency somewhere that Heimdall needs that we're not getting...something that's on some machines and not on others, and probably something Adam isn't even aware of. I was using my Kubuntu Linux machine that is specifically built for Android development and it was stopping at exactly the same place as your Mac. It was seeing the device just fine, able to send adb commands to it all day long, but as soon as it went into Download mode, it could no longer communicate. If you figure out the issue, I'd love to know what it is. I didn't spend much time on it since I had alternatives.
Yea I'm just waiting to hear any word from Adam on a fix. He confirmed to me that it does work on some macs, and not on others. I, apparently, am in the "others" category. haha Wish I was lucky enough to have a Windows PC layin around. The only computer I have is my mac, and it's the only thing I have for work and personal, so if something goes screwy (like a VM or Bootcamp installation), I'm effed. lol
Guess I'll just have to wait till someone figures it out.

Ahhh gotcha. That makes sense.
I'm getting an error stating that protocol initialisation failed and my phone gets stuck in download mode. Even if I disconnect the USB cable, Casual still says "device connected".
Latest Java program Java 7 for Winblows. For Mac Idk.

I'm sure you guys have checked this, but make sure you have the correct java. It will firebird the 32 bit by default and if you're on a 64 bit system it won't work.

Okay so I installed Windows 7 ultimate 32-bit in VirtualBox on my mac, got it up and running, got the latest Java update installed, installed CASUAL and got IT updated, now I can't get VB and Windows to recognize my phone. I've tried to install the latest drivers direct from the Samsung website, but they don't install (little popup in the taskbar tells me so...). At this point I'm ready to download Ubuntu and run that in VB. This whole thing reminded me why I hate Windows. hahaha
Any confirmation that CASUAL runs correctly in the latest Ubuntu build?
Plenty of people have gotten it to work. I didn't, but others have. I recommend a LiveCD instead of a VirtualBox. No weird VM issues that way.

I'm a 26 year old male, I'm married (common law), and quite frankly I'm broke as hell. Like, if I spent another year in these conditions, I'd surely become homeless.
I'm coming to this forum for some hope that I can do something with my life before it's too late. So please don't make fun of me, I'm here to learn all I can. I'm sick and tired of being called lazy and stupid just because I can't get a job (I live in a 3 mile Alabama town near nothing but a few family run gas stations).
Before judging me, you should know that I'm actually really really intelligent. I started learning HTML and CSS when I was 14, even ran an unofficial Linkin Park fan club for about 3 years by myself. I'm extremely interested in learning Javascript or whatever is necessary for Android development. I love Android.
I'm a huge nerd when it comes to things like stats, gaming, Android, the Internet, and being social. I learn all I can about anything I can research.
But I realize now - I'm not gonna make it anywhere if I don't have some sort of help. I need help learning Android development. I got a lot of ideas, I'm very creative, and love meeting new people.
Is there anyone out there who would like to I guess "tutor" me and we can be friends?
Hoping I don't get shoved off here. I know a lot of things and I'd hate to see it go to waste.

Im just learning java myself and learning to use programs like android kitchen have ben helping me also there are a few apps iv downloaded to help learn but i dont have enough experience to be of much help but feel free to message me for any tips and if i can help ill be glad too also if you find any tips feel free to send them my way cuz im still pretty new to this too. Iv ben starting off by usong java to deodex a stock rom and it hasnt ben the worst starting point but im still working out parts of it like having error 293 while trying to deodex an individual app but youll pick it up

Im not sure how old mine is its around 09 tho but runs linux amazingly also id highly sugest linux if coding and such theres a lot more options and to me its a lot more user friendly tho a quite a bit less "plug n play" to it tho if that makes sense to you but ill never use windows or a mac again

I've tried installing Ubuntu Linux Desktop and it just won't go past the loading screen on the install disc.

It takes a while to install specially first boot but go into your grub and make sure that boot of disc is 1st then any usb boot options then the normal hard drive. Then make sure that the install disc you have is a .img or .iso. .iso is the more likely to have then open dosc drive power down put disc in and power up youll have the option to do an install or hopfully live boot. If you can live boot do that then once loaded go to the cd and run the install. Another usfull tip is to partition your system and home folder to keep data when you install an update or new os. If your droid is root you can get an app called drive droid i believe and you can put the live boot os onto a fat 32 partition and it will boot on startup thru usb. Youtube will be your best friend in these processes

Well I'm a little newbish with different kinds of Linux. I just knew about Ubuntu from Googling Linux lol. I want a Linux distro that will have no problem running on a crap laptop. I have an Acer Aspire 5000. Geez I wish I had a few hundred dollars for a cheap but new laptop. Or maybe spend all that on a tablet with a physical keyboard and stand lol.

Lol i know a guy that has those for $350 but idk where your at and he doesnt ship. Google how to make live disc then google how to boot a live disc on windows and then install i use linux mint 13 right now on not the best laptop and it had a major overheating problem but linux changed that plus everyother crap thing windows does. Plus not too much worry about viruses but im sure theres a few out there. But linux and android kitchen are how im starting and its ben a learning curve

Is there like a bare bones Linux or basic Linux? I know how to live disc. It's just that this computer won't do the install. Possibly because of a bad disc read. I'd much prefer installing from my SanDisk Flash Drive. It's 32gb.

Then copy the liveboot img or iso onto the usb device but im not sure what else may be needed i get all my live discs from a coworker that builds his own distro versions. Im not sire on the barebones thing like i said i get mine pre built and the files are too big to dropbox but im sure you can easily find something to start with

I've heard of DSL Linux. It's supposed to be the smallest Linux distro. I might look into it.

You just need the proper tools, os and good enough hardware to run and test what you write. But that shouldnt be an issue but i dont know anything about other distros so i may not be able to help as much but the tools should be the same

Ill check that out tomarrow but im not too worried about size it only takes up about 9 gigs for me but im sure theres a way to trim down whatever distro you pick and probably a way to just partition your system to a usb stick and keep home partition on laptop but i havnt looked into that

Just found out DSL is a dead project. Hasn't been a stable release in years. Also, I'm worried about my wifi capability cutting off when installing Linux... Because my Acer Aspire 5000 has a wifi toggle button, and apparently wifi is a common bug in Linux =/ anyways thanks for the conversation.
I have a toggle button as well and the wifi still works just fine with mint 13 the only rhing that was a bug for me is that the first distro i installed i did with the toggle off so when i booted up the switch was backwards. Blue for off red for on lol. But thats ben sprted since then but i havent had an issue with it
You could look into running a virtual machine instead. Look into VirtualBox and install a Linux distro.
But if space is an issie he may not wanna have an os wothin his windows plus setting up the allocated ram and partition for whatever he adds into the vb. But thats a good idea i should have thought of that too lol
