I'm trying to run CASUAL on my macbook; it starts up fine, begins to run, and puts my phone into Download mode, then hangs up. The phone never leaves Download mode (with the android logo, says "Downloading...do not turn off target!!"). I've tried both ports on my MB, tried using my OEM cable and my Nexus 7 cable, and I'm at a loss. Do I need to put my phone in ADB mode (voldown+home+power) first, THEN run CASUAL? I've updated Java, rebooted phone and mac, and made sure I'm running the latest mac-enable update for CASUAL.
Any help would be awesome!!
Just throwing a guess out there. Is your phone set to debugging mode? Needed.

my thoughts also.
If it's getting to Download mode it has to be set to debugging, because it wouldn't get the adb commands to reboot otherwise. I had the same issue on my Kubuntu machine and never found a fix. I ended up doing on on a Win7 laptop instead (because my Win8 desktop was failing too).

good info! i have only used windows 7 so never had that problem.
I am definitely in debugging mode. That was one of the first things I turned on when I got my phone. haha
I'm still getting the hangup. I think Adam said CASUAL for mac is working for some, but others are having the same problem as I am. I just figured I was the only one, since no one posted on the forum about it.
I honestly think there is some dependency somewhere that Heimdall needs that we're not getting...something that's on some machines and not on others, and probably something Adam isn't even aware of. I was using my Kubuntu Linux machine that is specifically built for Android development and it was stopping at exactly the same place as your Mac. It was seeing the device just fine, able to send adb commands to it all day long, but as soon as it went into Download mode, it could no longer communicate. If you figure out the issue, I'd love to know what it is. I didn't spend much time on it since I had alternatives.
Yea I'm just waiting to hear any word from Adam on a fix. He confirmed to me that it does work on some macs, and not on others. I, apparently, am in the "others" category. haha Wish I was lucky enough to have a Windows PC layin around. The only computer I have is my mac, and it's the only thing I have for work and personal, so if something goes screwy (like a VM or Bootcamp installation), I'm effed. lol
Guess I'll just have to wait till someone figures it out.

Ahhh gotcha. That makes sense.
I'm getting an error stating that protocol initialisation failed and my phone gets stuck in download mode. Even if I disconnect the USB cable, Casual still says "device connected".

I'm sure you guys have checked this, but make sure you have the correct java. It will firebird the 32 bit by default and if you're on a 64 bit system it won't work.

Okay so I installed Windows 7 ultimate 32-bit in VirtualBox on my mac, got it up and running, got the latest Java update installed, installed CASUAL and got IT updated, now I can't get VB and Windows to recognize my phone. I've tried to install the latest drivers direct from the Samsung website, but they don't install (little popup in the taskbar tells me so...). At this point I'm ready to download Ubuntu and run that in VB. This whole thing reminded me why I hate Windows. hahaha
Any confirmation that CASUAL runs correctly in the latest Ubuntu build?
Plenty of people have gotten it to work. I didn't, but others have. I recommend a LiveCD instead of a VirtualBox. No weird VM issues that way.

my bad yeah i read your post and went back and looked sure enough i am putting the horse infront of the carrot. thank you both
I just recently went through this on 32bit Windows XP w/SP3 and the only way I could get the phone to be seen by the PC was to install Kies. Something about the drivers that Kies installs.... Once the phone was seen I was able to remove kies and the phone continues to be seen by the pc.... beats me.. but at least it works. May not be perfect, but it worked for me.
I've had my AT&T galaxy S2 for a week now, upgraded from the Captivate. Mildly impressed, but very very disappointed that i can't even connect it to my laptop for file transfers--because I have win 7 x64. Even my captivate connected to it!
I talked to samsung, they don't have a win7 x64 driver for it yet. They recommended the Kies Air application, which i tried, and is so antiquated and SLOWWW that it is unbearable to use. For example, transferring photos must be done max 20 at a time, and at a very slow transfer rate--when it works. Other times upon tranfer it says "Error: Network error occurred"
Oh and then Samsung's next piece of advice was to just reinstall my OS to the 32 bit version. WHAT!??!
If i can't transfer music and movies from computer to my phone, and i can't transfer my pictures from my pictures from the phone to my computer... i've actually downgraded from my captivate.
Anyone have any solutions? Or do i return this new phone, which i anxiously awaited and purchased the day it came out...?
Uninstall ANY and ALL drivers that have to do with Kies or a Samsung phone. Reboot ur computer and phone. Install Kies and see what happens. I had that problem when I had a couple droid phones but uninstalling and reinstalling everything seems to fix it.
Works fine on my Win7 64 laptop and desktop.
entropism -- what drivers are you using, the 32 bit ones?
Have you tried alternate USB ports on your computer? Does it show anything or give you any indication that a connection is being made?
Oh and I'm on W7 x64 myself and haven't had any issues but installed Kies before I did anything.
it shows the battery charging, phone beeps when plugged in... OS says "installing device driver..." and then shortly says "(X) Driver was not successfully installed." and that is the end of story so far.
.. and you guys that say you are successfully connected, is this for full USB download mode (like my captivate where it just sees it basically like flash drive on your computer)? or is it via the kies interface? thanks for all responses.

The drivers on the Samsung site for the GS2. It was working fine without them, but I installed for the heck of it. I'm not using KIES to connect, just enabling USB storage on the phone when I connect.

Mine is for full USB mode so I can see my sdcard contents, etc. It also works fine with Kies.
Also try a NEW data cable, after a while they get flaky.

There are two USB modes on AT&T GS2: the default MTP mode and the Mass Storage mode. To enable Mass Storage mode, you will have to go to Setting->Wireless settings and network->USB utilities.
I have no problem on two of my 64-bit Win7. Drivers automatically downloaded and installed.
Looks like your Win64 install has some issues.
Well guys, i've tried uninstalling all KIES and samsung drivers/softwares, rebooting, then reinstalling the sg2 driver from samsung's site, new data cable, still no luck.
How do I enable USB storage on the SG2? I guess it was automatically enabled on the captivate. I'm a computer guy, it seems like i'm being slow on this, or this is really not user friendly. Thank you guys for the responses and help so far.

Unless you're comfortable with using adb, know how to find or compile adb for ARM CPUs and have a tablet or device that allows usb host mode, then you're going to need a computer. As you need a computer to actually attempt to do that and cross compiling is a pain, that will likely not be an option.
Honestly, I wouldn't even bother doing that myself. Just a pain in the ass when it takes like 10 minutes to do on a PC without that versus some hours and a prayer.
Also you dont need to install anything to use adb on a PC, just the files for it. You could do this on a internet cafe pc, a friend's or a school computer. I mean if you can't find a computer through some means with given that, then I hope you're currently working for the Peace Corps in Sub-Saharan Africa and there's no electricity or phone lines.

Yeah you should be able to just grab adb from some random post on xda and run it and you'll be all set for what you need to root the manual way by downgrading and such. No install needed on the pc as long as you have a pc that runs windows, osx or linux. Just stick it on a usb stick or something and run. If you have issues, just post here again.
If you're using windows, then this should have everything you need in it to use adb without installing it:
http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?a3sx25laka08g0n
You'll just need to go to the directory you unzip it from and run adb in it from the command line.
that CASUAL does not work. Oh wait, let me guess, I don't have the right (1 of how many different ones suggested) usb driver, right? And I'm not in ADB, right? And I haven't tried different cables, and ports, and CADI on its own, and zadig, and usbdeview, and pulling the battery when it stalls in download mode (when CASUAL was still recognizing the phone, now neither CASUAL nor ODIN connect to it)? Sorry for the sarcasm, but I'm incredibly frustrated here. How does "one click" turn into a week of trying and trying and trying, and not only not making progress, but seemingly moving backwards where now I can't even get programs to connect? Is there something less messy, contradictory (seriously, the dev thread says "stock anything" but when trying the battery pull and reboot it goes off on me: OMFG WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING? I WARNED YOU! YOU NEED TO ROOT FIRST.) way to unlock? Or a more concise thread of troubleshooting CASUAL (And please, I don't need a link to the same dev thread I just referenced, again.)?
Well I guess the rest of us that followed Adam's thread and were easily unlocked and loading ROMs daily are magicians or something?
Try a different USB port and a different computer. I could not get it to work at all on one PC in Windows or Linux, but it worked first try as soon as I tried it on my laptop.

I feel your pain but hang in there and keep trying. It took me 3 days and several hours to find the right combination that finally worked. If you follow the dev thread for a few days, you'll see that most everyone having problems eventually gets it to work through a combination of trial and error and support from the devs.
If you haven't already, try the driver suggestions in the last several pages of the dev thread. This seems to be helping quite a few others. Another thing to try is running the Casual jar file from an admin command prompt instead of double clicking the file. This worked for me.
Hey guys,
I've been around these forums for a while.
I've had pretty much every Galaxy S phone that has been out for T-Mobile back to the Vibrant days.
I recently went on a journey to the dark side and had switched over to AT&T and had gotten a White 16GB iPhone 5S. Four months later, here I am.. back with T-Mobile and a White 16GB Galaxy S5. I was so close to getting the Note 4, but meh.. too big for me I think.
Anyway, back to my rant..
Never have I ever had so much trouble flashing a custom recovery on a phone, lol. It wasn't anything I was doing wrong I knew for sure, but it just kept failing, even going back to stop kept failing. I was up until like 3:30 AM last night trying to figure it out. I was going crazy. Tried different .tar files, ODINs, heimdall, etc. All this was in both Windows XP VMWare and Windows 7 VMWare, which I've never had an issue using before. Then I thought.. -sigh- it's probably stupid VMWare and ODIN / drivers / something not getting along. So I dusted off my dinosaur Windows XP desktop (Keep in mind I have a Macbook Air) and my god, never have I ever been as happy to own a dinosaur Windows XP desktop. I flashed back to stock, then flashed a custom recovery, then finally flashed Cyanogenmod.
Feels good to be back.
