So i've heard that the S-AMOLED and S-AMOLED Plus technology has "Perfect" Blacks! Like the Blacks don't even "Light-up".
Is it true? Or is it just a marketing thing? :/
Try this and tell me what do u have?
Turn off all the lights in the night and then view some BLACK picture. U'll see that the Blacks are kinda "Greyish" :/
And there are some pixels that are perfectly black.. but they're just Random... :/
known "issue" on lowest screen brightness
Ohk.. So its not "Completely Black".
theres also another problem with it aswell... When I view some pitch black picture in a completely dark room. I see some small rectangular shapes that are "Pitch Black" in that Greyish background. I cant snap a picture of that unfortunately but u kinda get the idea. Can someone try this with there own S3 and report me? :/
It'll be quite helpful
Is well known issue.

Mine does the same thing: darker black splotches when viewing a black picture on the dimmest screen setting in a dark room.
Fortunately I don't often find myself looking at all-black images in the dark. It's hardly a major issue.
this issue is quite common, even on iPads, Motorola etc...apparently it is the adhesive within the layers of the AMOLED that causes an "ink" mark when screen displays black images within a dark environment...nothing is actually wrong with your scren, mine has 2 very small dots...while my other friend has had his replaced because the issue was far more prominant...so there is a possibility of claiming warranty? but this will depend on the country/retailer/etc...but always worth giving it a shot if you cant stand this issue...but yes, earlier batches, the issue was far more obvious...but later ones are better but information from other XDA threads suggest that you WONT find a unit without any marks...period.
Hi, after two years with Defy I bought brand new Atrix 4G fw. 45.31.1.MB860.NonEFIGSRetail.en.EU, non rooted. The problem is that all dark colors like gray, dark-blue, dark-green, dark-red seems to be black. Rest of bright colors seems to be fine. For example gray menu with black letters is bright, clear and sharp but buttons like in Power Amp (dark buttons on dark background) has no borders and there is no difference between them and background. The same thing is with movies - daylight scenes looks nice but night scenes are so dark that it's hard to see anything. I installed Screen Adjuster too boost contrast and then all dark colors starts to be clearer and didn't split to black but rest of bright colors starts to be completely washed. Screen looks fine on bright background and it's alot better than washed up screen id Defy but on dark background there is no difference between dark colors, all looks black. Strange thing is that noone post this problem before so could it be factory damaged screen or maybe some software issue?? I really need help with it cause I payed for this phone the same as I sold my 1 year old Defy Plus and this Atrix is new so it would be nice to fix it, otherwise I need to return it quickly but I wont find that phone in the same occasional price.
So anyone can help??

I've the same issue, Chamelleon! have you found the way to fix it? now i'm running neutrino 2.9 CM7, so it doesn't seem to be a rom problem....
It must be kernel issue cause on AtrICS everything looks ok. Temporary solution is Screen Adjuster from Play Store and add some contrast. Colors looks more ****ty but You can see what is on the screen.

Hello all,
opened my white 920 today and I fiddled around with it for abit. I just noticed however that the backlit buttons have a very obvious yellow/green tint to it. When I compare it with full brightness white on the screen (as the buttons arent affected by it), it is very obvious.
Do you guys have something similar issue, or does your backlit buttons appear as crispy white as when you have full brightness on your screen?
yeah, i have the grey 920. the buttons are really yellow... im trying to ignore it, but if other people have pure white backlit keys, i will send it back i guess.

The only "positive" I can see about this is if you're watching the phone with tired eyes (when waking up in the morning in the dark or something) and you have low brightness but the 3 buttons are shining with the full crispy white and might hurt/annoy your eyes (unless the light can be completely turned off somehow). Yellow tint is after all more "calm" to the eyes. But other than that I guess it should be considered a defective unit.
Read though from a different user that his keys starting becoming more white after his 3 days of ownership. How long have you had the phone?
Compared full brightness to my old Desire HD, and the DHD white appears way more crisp and whiter. DHD uses super LCD. I thought this was supposed to be a top device, dafuq is this????
My black 920 does not have tinted buttons, my yellow one does. Might be an idea to add the color you are seeing this on to your posts, I am assuming the non-black versions have this ?
this'll be my second week with it. i played with a black one in store at JB, the buttons seemed pretty white. havent seen a grey one like mine in store though, so nothing to compare it to. might send an email off to nokia about it actually.

talking to a Romel via Nokia Chat right now, he has so far said there is nothing defective with my phone. but he did just ask if changing the brightness settings on the phone also changes the brightness of the capacitive buttons. for me, i actually dont see any change. how about you guys?

I have a White model. I compared full brightness with my old Desire HD. The white colors on DHD is much, much more white (white as snow) when put next to the Lumia 920 that has a slight - yet obvious - tint to it. The buttons are even more tinted.

Changing brightness for screen does not change brightness on buttons. I could live with tinted buttons for when using phone in the dark since you cant turn buttons off or lower them. But as soon as I saw the whites (on screen) on my Desire HD were far superior, I called for a replacement.
I dont know if simply the DHD has a better display, but I dont wanna roll the risk when im gonna be having this phone for the next 2 years. DHD uses Super LCD while Lumia 920 uses IPS TFT, and as far as I know IPS is supposed to be better. Either way, im hoping the replacement will be different. If the screen (not buttons) is gonna be the same on replacement, im simply gonna assume its how its supposed to be. Just kinda sad though how my 2 year old DHD is showing better, more crisp colors than the brand new Lumia 920.
I have taken three pictures with a bad digital camera that might help people tell the difference.
(sry for blurry pic 2 and 3)
Picture 1 (lumia down most)
Picture 2 (lumia on right)
Picture 3 (lumia down most)
Try look at one screen, then quickly the other, then back to the first one... Keep jumping between the two screens quickly with your eyes and you will notice the very different kind of whites the displays are showing, you can tell the Lumia is not showing as "snow white" as DHD. Might not seem like a big deal on pictures, but it is very noticeable in person and a shame for such a high end device.
Nope.. My friend has it.. and they are completely white..
Waiting for replacement. Will receive either tomorrow or monday. I will then compare the current device with the new (since I have to use the same packaging im getting with the new, to ship in the other). Will update here when I did it all.
I have a white 920 and yellow tinted buttons. I thought it was just supposed to be that way...

I think it is. The 920 has the same chrome/silver over the soft keys as the Nokia and att labels. It's a common belief that the chrome alters the color of the white leds.

Since so many wrote that they have pure white backlit keys on their devices (including white devices) I simply didnt wanna deal with it.
Should get replacement tomorrow and I will report back.
Replacement update:
After receiving my replacement I can confirm that if you have a phone with yellow tinted buttons, your device's screen will most likely also be affected. I currently have the faulty and new device at hand, and from putting the devices side by side with full brightness while viewing a blank white page, I can easily tell the new device has a much brighter screen, the white is... way more white, while the faulty device has what seems to be a blue tint over it, and a lower brightness overall. Because of this, all colors are affected. Not only do they not stand out as much, but some brighter colors (such as yellow), will with the blue tint appear darker.
Note though, this is all with two devices side by side. Even if you have none to compare with, I can tell you the difference is very noticeable. I will recommend anyone who believe they have yellow tinted buttons, are therefore might be affected on the screen aswell, to get a replacement!
To make yellow tinted buttons most obvious, put your device on full brightness and go to a white blank page! Now look at your buttons and compare its "whiteness" to whats on the screen!
Note: The buttons will never be as bright and white as the screen. A non-faulty device will have a dark-layered-white (or they would sting your eyes when you used low brightness), while a faulty will have a most obvious yellow tint to it!
If anyone has any questions or something they want comparing from the two devices I have (up to 4 more days), please let me know.

I received my 920 last Saturday. My 920 looks fine. Right now i notice the color stuff - or the "maybe" color stuff ...
The arrow on the left looks nearly white.
The windows symbol in the middle looks white (a touch of light green/yellow?).
The magnifier on the right looks nearly white.
Any idea?
Thx, SP

What do you mean "nearly white"? A non-faulty device's buttons will be a darker tint of white (never as white and bright as on the screen). Do you know how cars sometimes has tinted windows you cant see through? Imagine the glass layer below over the buttons is tinted as such, making sure the light does not come through as strong, but remain white.
In regard to telling if it is faulty, all I can recommend is to turn brightness to full, make the theme white and then compare. Just keep looking back and forth on the screen and the buttons, you will indeed notice if they have a yellow tint to them, but im not sure with "nearly white".
Can you maybe go to a store and compare with a display model?
In the end its up to you if you wanna go for a replacement. If they're offering a free replacement you can take use of it, and if its the same, you can always ship the new device back (unless you're keen on the new one incase your current has scratches or whatever)
White seems not to be white...

Thanks for your reply! I compared with a display model and your right! White seems not to be white on my 920. My Lumia looks like there is dust in the display... It is pin sharp - but black is a bit grey - white is not full white. All the colors seems to be a bit "overlain by" a blue film...
I did not recognized it before - cos i did not compare the display with a different model...
... Thx, SP

Good to know you could compare and identify the issue. I hope you will get a replacement. Know though that I recieved 2 phones with this issue. Im not sure if Nokia shipped out a batch of faulty devices, or if they're using different suppliers for their screens. Either way, you shouldnt ship your first phone back until you get the second, so that you can compare them and make sure the new isnt faulty/"from-a-bad-batch".
Well for me the white on the screen is totally white, no worries there but on the touch keys I can see a shade of yellowish tint on them
I put the display on full brightness and checked this...I have white lumia 920 model RM-821
The screen brightness and white levels are unrelated to the yellow tint on the buttons. I have a flawless phone and yellow buttons.
All new batches are having tinted buttons ( yellowish~green ). It was done on purpose to avoid disturbance at night because they do not dim when the screen adjusts itself to a lower level of brightness and that could potentially annoy you when the screen is set to low brightness at night.
It's how the phone is supposed to work. Now please don't go exchange your device if you have the so called " perfectly white buttons " for a tinted one. There are other things to worry about in a phone.

If I only look at a faulty device, the white also appears... white. First when you have them side-by-side do you realize it. You would need to compare in a store like someone else did in this thread I believe, and he got a confirm on a faulty device.

No, I wont exchange. Like I mentioned I do not mind the yellow tinted buttons. I would prefer the white ones, but I cant go on exchanging every second/third day.
Thanks for the info though.
Hello.
I bought Salaxy S4 here in Europe but I have one problem from the beginning. When I look directly to the screen white and other colors looks great. But when I look to the screen just a very little more from the side white color get blue color in it. I know that viewing angles gives you different colors to the screen but on my S4 specially white color changes too quickly to my taste. I tested two S4 in two different shops and one have the same problem or even worst but second one looks a lot better. Anyone has this problem too? I am really disapointed and angry because this phone is expensive and colors of the screen looks different from the phone to the phone. It is like a lottery. I had S3 but I don't have this problem.
Hey guys,
I havent seen a thread related to display issues. In 2 german Forums I found threads about various issues. From Color fade, to overall greenish tint or flickering screens.
Sadly I am very picky with display stuff and my Display isnt perfect either. I mostly use relatively low brigthness settings (around 30-40%) and on dark mode especially the settings menu has a color fade from dark grey to dark blue. This cant be seen on any other color.
Its easy to see in a dark room, the brighter the room the lesser you will notice.
To easier check: use telegram, with its blueish theme its definitely way stronger fading there...
For a phone thats 649€ in germany thats unacceptable for me. My P5 has a slight warmish but perfectly even colored display and thats what I expect from a P6.
What about you? Can anyone check their display if thats a common issue?
Hi,
i have the same issue, also a device from germany.
Even when booting when everything is white, I always have multiple changes between white and blue in the display.
I'm at work, I try to take a picture when I get home.
Please do, Id really be intersted. Sadly we cant do anything about it...
Anybody have the green ish tint on a black screen issue? Seen a few of those floating around as well...
Similar issues with my screen, also from Germany.
My first OLED screen had been with the Galaxy Note 1 and I hated it for its issues. Always bought devices with LCD screens afterwards.
The Pixel 6 is my first OLED phone since and it is having pretty much the same issues my Note had 10 years ago
Great phone so far (Android is still a bit buggy), but the display is quite a disappointment for me personally, at least for brightness levels below ~50%...
Is it just me or are most of these issues regarding the display coming from Germany? Please can people state what country the device was purchased from if they have this issue
Wow @Abnovitas thats really really bad. Sadly till now everyone seems to be from Germany...
I just finished chatting with Google's support.
They are going to replace the phone, but I'm still waiting for their email with instructions.
But first they walked me through some superficial settings (disabling Dark Mode and some accessibility stuff, like Color Inversion...) and then tried to talk it off as a normal property of OLED displays, which I didn't accept to this extent. But hey, that's probably just Google's policy.
Let's see if this was just bad luck in the OLED lottery.
For me its too difficult to take a picture with dark screen. The color change is slightly less than the picture from @man1acc
But i have problems with white color, it is light grey and i have green stripes on white, this is also very very difficult to make a picture.
Here you can see it a bit, but in real life it is much stronger
This is how my display looks like. Quite disappointing, Google has the same problems for years. But the phone itself is very well built, so maybe I will keep it. Bought the phone in Germany.
I have some rainbow effect which is mostly noticeable on white backgrounds. Hard to capture but found it is quite noticeable with an external light source. In this case my monitor. Anyone else have this or more importantly for a RMA, don't have it?
Pixel 6 when on a black background the right side of the display has a green tint shadow effect kinda worrying as it's not present on the left side and seems to only appear on darker backgrounds like when pull notification tab down or in a app (like xda) with black background very noticeable , or is this just standard now for Oled displays it's not the first phone I've noticed this over the years just curious if any pixel 6 owners see similar or should I get it exchange ? Added pic not sure if shows that well though

Not normal. Each pixel is controlled individually.
It maybe hardware or firmware.
Sounds like the display control matrix wasn't designed properly or is defective.
Your screenshot isn't showing it so neither should the display!

Unfortunately not true. If it's an issue with the display, a screenshot should never show it. But it can be visible when a picture of it is taken.
My Pixel 6 (right) was bought first day from the Google Store. I'm in the USA. It has a very strong dirty red tint at the bottom and a garish green at the top. Easily visible at 60-70% brightness and lower. Here it is compared to my Pixel 4a (left), shot on my 3a. Haven't had uniformity issues this bad since my OG Pixel (which got replaced).
Waited to chat with a support rep for an hour, chatted for another hour, and have an RMA device ordered and on the way.
Maybe are cross to dark side lol
That was a joke id never cross to the dark side lol and tint only seems visible when in certain dark mode apps and not actually navigating around the phone xda app is worse lol so don't think hardware issue tbh
