What is actually supposed to happen when you hold volume down and power? I get asked to push power up, and then an android appears with some blue ish girder thing sticking out of his stomach. Then it is replaced by another android lying on his back with a keypad on his stomach and a warning sign hanging above. What does this mean?
I am running ics and haven't done anything to the OS or rooted
There's not really a point of going into recovery at this point. Using the stock recovery we can't flash ROMs/kernels or make backups.

If you have the firmware update.zip on the root of the MicroSD card itll flash it, thats all ...
Useful if your in a bootloop.
If you just want to apply the update from a working system, a warning triangle will appear in the notification bar when you have inserted a microsd card with the update.zip in.
P.S. you can only flash the same or higher firmware ... you cant downgrade (and also make sure you get the right region. US, WW etc etc...

Is it a worth try to reinstall a ROM?
I see that this issue already has been written about, but I will really appreciate an explanation for a dummie
Will the unit be able to start a reinstall if a new software is placed onto the memory card? Is the fact that the phone shows "HERO" a sign that the boot process reaches the point to start a reinstall?
If so, can anyone please link me the appropriate ROM and explain what to do?
Is the ROM an .exe file?
I have tried the trick to reset the unit by pressing HOME, BACK and hit the POWER buton. The unit got into the meny and I selected RESET or something but it did solve the problem . I do not know any other easy trick.
Thanks!
Is ur phone rooted? if so try holding the HOME key then power on the device and that will get u into recovery screen, there, try flashing a new ROM u can find plenty here:

Get an RUU from HTC's website, thats rescued a few soft bricks that i got. Although you may have damaged some internal components.

This is what I did:
Downloaded the ROM-:2.73.405.5 from HTC.
Installed in windows 7 and took the ROOT.ZIP file from the installation TEMP folder, renamed it to HEROIMG.ZIP and put it to the clean FAT32 SD card and booted the HERO.
The HERO installed the file without any fault messages,
but still the unit does not boot any further than the "HERO" white letters...
I guess this is it...I need a new print card for the phone? I have checked the contacts inside the HERO, they seem ok.
When putting the unit to charge the orange light lits, but disappear when pressing power button - however, the battery DOES charge.
Why did you extract the ROM.zip, just let the RUU run its course. It'll fix any software issues that may exist.

You will have to be more specific than this...
Have you tried wiping Cache Partition and/or Dalvik Cache
When i boot the phone it never fully boots, when it finally gets to my lock screen the android system does not load. I can't do anything at all. I havent tried to root or anything. it just started and there was no reason why
the phone has finally booted to where my homepage would be but its a black screen that says android system on it and thats all. i can get to no apps or anything,
Im going too take a wild guess and say you either tried too install cwm without being rooted or u did not properly unlock your bootloadeR. Which is the case? Because this would not just happen did u read this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1302423

You might have to use rsd lite to flash a stock rom. If you look thru the posts in the dev section you will find what your looking for. I believe the post is labeled but don't quote me, how to root after sbf flash. I know it's something like that.
Read up on using rsd lite it's very easy once you read about it.
Best of luck to you.
If I can be of any further help feel free to pm me and I'll do my very best.

Sounds like you should factory reset.
Turn off phone
Hold volume down and press power
Continue holding volume down until it says fastboot in upper left corner
Release volume down
Press volume down until you get android recovery in upper left corner
Press volume up
Find factory reset option ( not sure where since I don't have factory recovery anymore)

The soft keys light stay on how many time?
For quite a awhile.... I'd say well over a minute and I checked in the display settings and nothing, it's not set to "on all the time".
Just powered off again, I'm gonna guess that it'll stay on until I pull the battery out.... brutal. Maybe I got screwed in buying the phone.
That's not right, take the battery out, run it down and recharge it. Turn off the soft key lights in settings and if that's the only problem then you can just live with them always off.
If you really want them though, if you just bought it you can always take it back and explain the problem to a samsung shop, get it fixed. But it sounds software based, so flashing a new ROM would probably fix it, don't know if you want to do that though.
Well, with the option to turn off the soft keys permanently it just hangs there.
Whether I'm shutting it down or restarting, nothing happens.
Restart just a black screen, lights on when the option is on and black screen when I turn off soft key lights.
I think they put ICS on it, version 4.0.3 and updated maybe via the carrier?
Not sure if it was via a ROM.

You have an SGH-T989. You should go to the T989 forums. This is the forums for the i9100, a different model of the Galaxy S2.
Try to wipe all ( MAKE BACKUP ! ) and install the latest firmware.

OP, if you choose to follow this advice (which actually isn't bad advice, provided you use the proper firmware for your device) just make sure you use a firmware for the SGH-T989. (I linked you to the proper forum above)
DO NOT use any firmwares kernels or ROMs from this forum, as they are all firmwares kernels and ROMs for the I9100, which again, is a different device.
Unless, of course, your actually WANT to brick your device. If it seems I'm stressing the correct device model thing a bit too much, it's because I see tons of people who do just this.
No, no, I'll DEFINITELY use the right/proper ROMS, thanks for pointing out I was in the wrong area, definitely appreciate that.
Now by wiping all, do you guys mean to go into the menu and do a factory reset?
That'll mean I'll end up looking the phone, won't I?
Not sure how to approach this as it seems to be running ICS and I don't want to run the risk of screwing things up more so.

If by "looking" you meant "locking", no. Factory reset just wipes the /data partition
i wiped everything including a factory reset then installed liquid rc8 i used correct one for my phone it rebooted but never booted up to the samsung logo doesnt seem to vibrate or anything when i press power wtf?
now when i plug it into pc it shows my external drive then it vanishes then re-appaears and tells me to format it but that doesnt work either
Put in download mode and Odin back to stock.
How full was your battery when you started? May have drained it

If you can get back into recovery mode, try reflashing the rom or flashing another rom. I've had cases where a rom just wouldn't work for me (I too, have the AT&T Note). Never had the patience to try to figure out why. I usually try to flash several times (making sure I do a factory wipe) but if it still didn't work, I would just flash another rom.
If you can't get into recovery mode, then you may need to flash a stock rom via ODIN (in download mode) and then start all over from scratch (root the phone, install CMW or TWRP,flash custom rom, etc.). Please search the forums for a stock rom and all the files / instructions on flashing via ODIN if you aren't already familiar with it.
Since your PC recognizes the phone to some degree (it at least recognizes that the phone was connected and interacts with the sd card), it sounds like you have a soft brick which is fixable via one of the methods above. If your phone was hard bricked, then the PC more than likely wouldn't recognize it at all, it would do absolutely nothing and you would basically have a paper weight. It doesn't sound like you have a hard brick.
If anyone else has more insight, please chime in. I'm definitely no expert here.
it wont even light up to samsung logo or even vibrate also the sd is recognised but it randomly connects and disconnects odin does not see phone

Perhaps your cable is defective. All of my cables eventually get to the point where I have to twist them and hold them a certain way to work. When that happens I know it's time to replace the cable. You may just need to use another cable.
no i tried with 2 differnt cables also battery was at like 99% when this happened also windows keeps finding my sd for a moment and then vanishes could this be stuck power button? if so i dont see how i didnt touch power button when it rebooted

So my phone started restarting randomly. It will only show the Samsung logo turn off and do the same thing again. Its not rooted and I am pretty sure that its not from something I installed recently (Everything was from the play store and no immediate problems after any of them). When I did the hold volume up,down and power it would only keep on restarting still. But when I just hold volume down it comes to something else that asks if I want to install a new rom. So I was wondering what I should do. Install a new ROM and then revert back ? or will that not work? Also I have a extra I717 with a broken screen I could swap the insides and see if that would help. Also I don't know much about rooting and stuffs. Lemme know what I should do guys! :highfive:

Take out the battery. Insert the battery without touching anything else. Does it just power on itself or does it stay off? If it does turn on, you might have a stuck power button. Let us know what happens
did that too :/
I did that too. It would turn off and on again but only show the Samsung logo then restart again. Also I have the case removed so It cant be the power button being stuck and I have tried the battery thing still nothing.
Whatcha mean? It would turn on by itself once the battery is inserted or you would have to press the power button. Once the battery is out and then inserted back in, it is not supposed to be powered on by itstelf. If it does turn on by itself, then the power button is most likely pressed in.

I have a I717 doing the same thing. (Eg. device boots and seems to function for a about 2 minutes locks up and reboots. )
As the device was stock when it started having this issue I figured it might be an OS issue Factory reset to it would leave the device booting to optimize applications then reboot. Checked power button checked it was clean.
Also staied on when in recovery without issue.
As I figured this was an OS issue I installed CWM
Downloaded and installed SlimBeam
Device booted and completed instlation and operated for about 2 minutes and rebooted.
Device will does not have any issues with in CWM or Odin. I
I read alsowhere that the internal SD-Card filesystem might have become corrupted and need to be reformated however I have yet to find instruction or confirmantion.
Anyone have some ideas?
.
to Tal Star.
1. When you were in CWM and were about to flash, did you wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache and dalvik cache then do the flash? Or just flash?
2. So either os it would do the same? Stay on for about two minutes, then reboot? Would it reboot back into the os and do the same?

So right now you can boot up into the os and it will turn off in 2 minutes? or just given enough time? Will it boot into the os each time? I dont think ill have an answer for it, but i bet someone that does will want to know the same things to possibly narrow it down

Naw it starts optimzing the Applications and lasts a few minutes reboots locks up and starts again. SlimBean completes the process and makes it all the way to the launcher but after a same amount of time it reboots. back to the launcher. (Slim bean has a resonable number less Apps and that's why it completes or is my best guess)

Could be a corrupt download.
Again, I always flash rom 2 times. You can get different reactions from 2 seperate flashes. 2 time seems to get a more solid installation.
Wait your 10 and reboot.
Still think its a power button issue. It can act normal but still be the problem. Hows you battery?

Nope I am working on the one I have with the SIM Card out & SD card out.
happens
So what I done so far is taken out the sim and sd card. Took out the battery put it back in and when I power to turn it on It vibrates (like it normaly would when it starts) then shows Samsung logo turns off and loops. I tried doing the hold volume up down power thing and it does not work. But what does work is when I hold volume down it takes me to a custom OS thing. I don't know what that is but I cant get there. So maybe put a custom OS in and then revert it back?
So I used Odin and put 4.1.2 Jelly Bean Official Firmware but its still doing what it was doing before.Used 3.07 and it said it passed fine. Should I try a different rom or something else? Also the first time it starts up after installing the rom it goes past the logo to the ATT ball animation logo freeze there and turns of then when I turn it on from there it will loop at the samsung logo again.
You can try the firmware upgrade and initialization feature in kies. It will return your device to the original factory firmware, software, and settings. If it still loops after that you have hardware issues.
Ok so I guess im making progress now. After I put the stock rom (Different one from befor) It DIDNT BOOT LOOP well it did but only looped 3 times then stoped. Also there are 2 Samsung logos. the frist one was just normal logo ( same one I was having befor ) then the screen turns off and shows the same logo but this time its a little bigger its white with a blue glow! ( Made it further this time but still crashes afterwards) BUT now I can actualy get into the Manual mode. I did a wipe data/factory reset in that mode which didnt help i wiped the cache too. Still didnt help.
Now in manual mode my computer does recognize that something is connected to it now but it tries to configure it and keeps on failing. And so samsun kies cant connect to it either.
But from where I started at its a improvement
My Note is doing the same thing too now, but I know the reason why. I was trying to install clockworkmodrecovery so I would be able to upgrade to jellybean and I think I flashed a kernel that was meant for rooted phones (pretty dumb of me I guess). So now the phone is stuck and I'm going to try to install the original jellybean 4.1.2 for rogers and hopefully that will fix it.
As long as you can get into Odin download mode, your phone can be fixed.
