Does anyone tried to repaint the scratches and chips on the edge of Dell Streak 5? I have scratches and chips on the edge of my Dell streak and i was planning to repaint it to remove those scratches. Any idea on how to do such. Thanks in advance. Any help is highly appreciated.
I have a red streak got it without a case n lost the pouch early , so ive used it for a year without any case (finally got one) and its easily scratched especially at its corners (not a small device) .
Well my solution is nail lacquer, the thing that girls paint on their nails !! Whitch has number 60 on the bottle ( the degree of its depth maybe) so if ur Streak is red..go for the girl thing :O !! That suited me :-D !!

I recommed to try to apply this. - Textured 3D Carbon Fiber -
I used this for some older phones, i plan to apply this on my laptop and my Streak, i just need to find a provider, you can find this Carbon Fiber-like sticker in car-tuning shops or places like that. Or a fast search on eBay or online shops would do the trick.
The whole process can be painful, but it's a small price to pay for a good result, it can be difficult as there are many edges and you need to cut precisely, but here's an advice, use a hair dryer or something to make the material easy to stretch.
Also, you will need to make this texture even for the buttons, but this depends of the thickness of the material.
I'l make a thread if i will get my hands on some textured carbon, and there i will make a guide with the whole process, but only if i get some of this and if i decide to do this, is painful as hell, there are many things you must have in mind... But either way, after all this, the phone will look gorgeus, and will feel very nice in hand.

Ok so I bought a clear case here And while working, I was inspired by A black and silver Ford GT sitting in our shop. Here are the results.
that looks pretty good. may i ask where did you buy your case.
eBay
You can buy it from eBay a seller "e2" in Hong Kong, but shipping just about a full month. I bought 2 and am using none of them. They are garbage because the holders (places where plastic pieces stickout) will scratch your phone no matter what. Overtime, the places where the case is held on the phone will be pressed leaving the paint on the phone depressed and scratched. Otherwise it will protect the phone real good.

They are not the highest in quality, and it took ten days shipping. But it sounds like you need to trim the "flash" around the tabs, you can also cut the tabs off and use little pieces of 2-sided tape, which will solve all of your mentioned problems.. for less than $5.00 and you can paint 'em any color you want, I ain't complaining!

VERY NICE PIMP! Very nice indeeed. an affortable and less dodgy way to do it
What paint you used? And sorry if I am blind, but you painted the cases you bought, not the phone itself, right ?
And BTW, looks ...WOOW
Nice job!
that reminds me of a friend of mine who once owned one of the cheapest polish cars (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polski_Fiat_125p) and painted id in similar way (actually he made quite lot of modding inside as well, including chrome-metallic parts that resembled washing machine in a way
oh well, there's been a lot of fun with this piece of junk... and the guy's nickname is still "Viper" ;]
oh yeah. i forgot to mention i like this mod a lot, looks very cool!!

I am a Developmental Marketing Technician for Ford Motor Co. I pulled the "Paint Codes" from the door of the GT in the Third Picture. And used PPg enamel paint. I think any paint will work?! And yes I painted the inside. I screwed up the stripes (they should be wider and closer together). But I was in a hurry, I did it on my lunch hour, and still had time to eat! The paint looks really good!! The clear Plastic makes it look like a super thick clear-coat!! I spent a little time on a bench buffer with it. But the paint will never scratch, because it is inside!!
[HINT]
Oh yeah, a little Tip if you decide to try!!! After spraying the inside, no matter how well you mask it, you will end up with a mist of paint on the outside. A little polishing compound and a soft rag removes it like magic!!
Here is a Link to a picture of the case without the phone
congratulations
anione knows if this clear case exist for i- mate k-jam or qtek 9100??
COGRATULATION AGAIN YOU GIVE ME A GREAT IDEA

Pardon my poor language.. but what do you mean by "flash"?
Just dropped my phone a few hours ago and extremely upset... Luckily it was in its case but a coupla corners still got damaged
I was about to purchase a replacement housing but seeing this post, this would be a much cheaper alternative... Just gotta think of a theme now and find an artist...
Do you know if anyone sells it without that circle on the back?

Flash means when a plastic piece is cast, a small amount of plastic is left over that needs to be trimmed, or it could leave a jagged edge.
The circle on the back gives it a stable base when you lay the phone down...

man, why dont they sell these cases in the stores?????
that's a pretty damn good job, nice work!!
My wizzard 's casing is pretty beat up due to me dropping it, just laying it down on concrete, etc. I'm really thinking about actually sanding and 'polishing' the body of it to make it more shiny/get rid of scratches....and then buy a hardcase to go over that...
Wow... tahts the nicest case i've ever seen. Nice job... you should resell your case... =]
I did the same thing(well, solid black). It looks awsome from the front, but I cant get the back to really fit to the phone. I don't know if its my phone or if I just got a bad case.
I think I would have a little trouble returning it painted black though!
Like many others, the top of the Evo 4G LTE is a major detractor. When looking for a way to fix this I came across this where they sanded the polycarbonate of the glossy iPhone to give it a brushed look. I'm curious as to how well something similar (using circles insteads of lines to make it matte but not brushed) would work well with the top of the Evo 4G LTE. What makes this worse is that in the video HTC published you can see a prototype with matte plastic and it looks tremendously better.
Gonna check out this link when i get on my pc. But sounds like a pretty good idea. Back when I had an ipod touch I hated the mirror backs because of how scratched up they got so i sanded it to look like stainless steel. Worked out perfect.
Although I don't like the shiny plastic look its not so bad I think I can live with it but if this ends up working good with the EVO maybe ill give it a shot but I don't think ill be the guinea pig haha

I thought so to but it does house the nfc chip so if anyone does make one it probably won't be cheap
Sent from my PG86100 using xda premium
It's not the NFC chip but just the antenna so third parties should be able to make a replacement part. The area near the lens worries me a bit though. Unless it looks better in person I think I will sand it.
Thanks for posting this. I was already planning to do this but now I have some instructions. For anyone who doesn't want to read the external posts, the process should go something like this:
1. Remove the shiny plastic back-cover
2. Acquire two small pieces of sand paper (one 800 grit and one 1200 grit)
3. Start by wet-sanding with the 800 grit sandpaper (use a forward-back motion)
4. Clean, inspect, and continue sanding until all shiny spots are gone
5. After you've gotten to all the tricky spots, let it dry, clean again with a soft cloth, and check out the results. This will produce a very dull finish.
5. If you would prefer a more polished finish, switch to the 1200 grit sandpaper and carefully re-sand the entire surface
6. Post pictures on xda.
I'm sure there will be third parties making backings. It'd be an easy way to make money too, if anyone is keeping track of this idea. I for one love the two-toned look.
I despise the two-tone look. I wish I'd never seen the AT&T One X in white. makes me hate the looks of the back of this phone that much more. If I get one, I'll be doing this or painting the back or something to make it look better.
If anyone is experienced with sanding, is the 800 anf then 1200 grit approach appropriate?

Yes, coarse paper first (800) then the finer paper (1200), I would test it out first. and don't forget this should be a wet sand with water as a lubricant.
I wanted to put in a request to Seidio to make some in a limited quantity but:
1. I wonder if they'll follow through?
2. Will it kill the signal advantage of the OEM's door?
3. Will it dissapoint (Still glossy, Loud, LOGO plastered, Weird etc.)?
That back peice is also part of my reasoning for wanting a white one.
i wonder if the plastic is a coated red like the original evo.
i thought it was neat with the original evo, you could sand to reveal red.
the back doesnt bother me, it'll be covered with a casing anyways.

I don't understand why people would want to put cases on their phones. It's the same principle as buying an expensive couch and 'protecting' it with a plastic cover or buying an expensive car and then installing neoprene covers on the seats. This is an awesome, well built phone. It was designed to be used 'naked'. If it needed an additional layer of clothing, HTC would have designed it into the phone.
I feel that if people would just learn to take care of their phones, they could enjoy using them the way they were designed to be used.
Anyway... my 2 cents. You have a right to disagree and, if you buy the phone, it's yours to do with as you please. But, personally, I just can't stand to see a beautiful smart phone dressed in a purka (a phone burka).
I'm probably going to sand blast mine as soon as I get it. if its just polycarbonate it'll turn out nicely!
Just wait a month or so for the Chinese to make a nice top replace and post it on Ebay.
I bought this white back for the phone to see what i could do with it. I took the letters off because they were not stuck on there good. They came off with a dust can.
Decided to paint it a sliver color to match the frame as close as possible. I hand painted the inside of the letters black. I don't know what to do about the "M" yet, if i'm going to put one on there or not. Maybe something else, idk.
This is what I have so far. It looks like it has a brushed look to it. After I painted it, I scuffed it with a dish scrubber to give it that look.
Last thing I do, will be spray a satin clear.
That thread title though.
Looks good.

Definitely a cool option to have something unique like that.
This does look cool. But I wonder what kind of spray paint you used and even more importantly what kind of clear coat are you going to use to withstand bending? When one removes and puts back on one has to bend this cover a bit and I'm not sure how well will paint and coat withstand this?

I used rust-o-leum paint and clear. I'm not worried about the bending. I'm taking this one off in the next few days.
I started another one with a different silver. I wont be reusing the current one.
FYI they make paint for plastic (bendable) it's mostly for bumpers on cars
I took the cover off earlier and the paint held up very well, i didnt bend the cover a whole lot to begin... i wasnt going to use it again so i decided it to test how much bend it would take and i had to bend it a lot in order for the paint to wrinkle.
I tried doing something similar for my daughter that got bored by the same old phone sleeve/case that was partially clearly transparent and partially frosted look.
I decided to paint the frosted part using RAL 9005 matte black spray paint. I haven't clear coated it yet as it was just an experiment. If it turns out to be ok I may coast it using some not so rigid coat to avoid cracking due to the rubbery nature of this sleeve.
She likes the end result. Me too. Unfortunately I'm not able to add images to my posts (haven't posted enough posts to XDA - apparently)

How did you stick the back cover back on?
I'm curious to know what you used to stick the cover on with.
The reason I ask is that my first Nexus 6 came with the cover unstuck right out of the box. I returned it (partly because I was worried that the battery may have swelled) but I'd be interested to know how hard it would have been to stick the cover back down again.

Uuhm... i had thought the idea of seeing more than one back cover in some of the more recent photo's would have indicated it... but also in the first post he says he bought a white back cover a while ago to see what he could do with it. He didn't remove and replace the same back cover. Pretty sure that's NOT possible due to the adhesive... or at least risks the ability to put it back on firmly and smoothly.
Hello,
I want to open my Nexus 6P in the name of science
I´ve managed to open other devices before but this Nexus 6P somehow scares the living cr*p out of me when it comes to the visor glass :crying:
There is barely any gap between the glass and the Aluminum back and even a razor blade is barely thin enough to pass through.
I tried to heat the glass with a hairdryer and to carefully fit a razor blade between the glass and the case. I´m afraid that the thin razor blade cannot create a powerful lever and even if, this might cause the glass to burst.
Now I really wanted to open this device since I don´t care about the warranty anyway and use some nice 17W/mK thermal pads inside.
By any chance, did any of you already open this device before and is there a secret strategy maybe ?
Well even if the glass visor breaks... There is one available for cheap on eBay
The problem with the cheap glass is that a) I might have to wait for several weeks for it. If I only partially damage the glass while still maintaining the area for the camera, it would not be that bad. But what if the glass cracks this area too ? This is why I´d rather prefer to remove the visor glass in one single piece
Try: https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Nexus+6P+Teardown/51660
I watched a strip down video of this phone a while back.....it did not look pretty. The glass visor on the back I believe was removed with a razor blade and if I remember correctly it did not crack. I would use a heat gun and heat the area to soften any glue before trying to pry it off.
In all honesty though, this device was not made to be stripped apart and put back together. I just don't see being able to strip the device and put it back together without leaving some sort of evidence that it had been taken apart lol.
This is the best teardown video I found. Using pieces of a soda can was a great idea and the phone looked intact around the glass and lower piece areas. Glass was in one piece as well. It's in my YT favourites in case I ever need it *knocks on wood*
PS: If you end up using this method (or any other), please let us know how it went.
Thanks for the great link, I will try again later I don't care about the warranty and I will continue to use a case anyway. It's just something some guys like to do. No risk, no fun. No brain, no pain Awesome idea with the selfmade lever out of a soda can
Seems like LG is the only company making phones that are easy to repair.
Sent from my LG-E980 using XDA Free mobile app
Well, at least I had the heart to try it out I don´t have a heat gun and I guess it´s next to impossible to soften the glue without one. A regular hair dryer is too weak. I also tried to make some levers out of soda can parts but it´s useless if you cannot apply enough heat in order to soften the glue.
Maybe it´s possible if you wait for hours for the device to heat up with a hair dryer but you also damage the whole device because of the way you spread the heat.
I might try again later if I get a heat gun. This phone is really tough to open. Did anyone else already manage to open this device without some special equipment ?
@Gorgtech, I had to open my nexus 5 to replace the screen/digitizer. I purchased an $8.00 cell phone/small electronics toolkit from Walmart. It has magnetized screw drivers, plastic pry tools and a suction cup. I highly recommend it!
Thanks for the hint, I have some various tools which are OK for most repairs but only lack a heat gun. I´ve decided to get one in the end because it´s not as expensive as I thought before. However, I´m not sure if I´m still allowed to post reviews or guides on this site anymore so don´t expect too much input after
Erm, why wouldn't you be allowed?
All my reviews on this site have been closed because I mentioned the manufacturers and also posted Amazon Links. I got a Pm which warned me of creating any extra 'spammy' reviews. I'm a long term member here and I didn't intend to offend anyone. Nevertheless I'm not sure if I'm still allowed to post reviews or user guides here if I get something from any manufacturer for a honest and unbiased review.
I don't know what to say. I mean, the community needs users like you to survive and remain interesting. Oh well...
So I dropped my 3a XL, screen was fine but digitizer spiderwebbed. I've replaced it, but I'm having trouble getting any adhesive to keep the screen stuck in the body. Guessing there's just enough bend to the body now that it can't sit flat, not sure. Long and the short of it, I'm tired of wasting money on adhesive that doesn't work, but I'd still like to not have a trashy phone. I'm a minimal case person, I bought this hoping the plastic would make it so I didn't need a case, but wouldn't you know it this is the first phone I've dropped, and on the first drop it did this. So what I'm hoping is that there is a minimal case out there that has *just enough* lip that it covers the outer edge of the screen. I've got a Spigen thin-fit, and it's a nice enough case, but it doesn't cover the edge of the screen, so it's not going to help hold it in any.
Any suggestions?
I have Spigen tough armor and this one below, about half the bulk of the spigen:

Stop being a cheapskate and buy better adhesive. You're using low quality adhesive which is why it isn't sticking(or you're not following the directions properly)
You could try rhinoshield. They have just a bumper case. I opted for the whole case.

* Sorry if that comes off as snarky, just irritated with the whole thing. Have a $400 phone that I've spent almost $120 trying to get repaired and running out of patience. Just need something to hold it together until I sort out what I want to replace it with. If you have any suggestions of 'better' adhesive, I'm open.
Found the below in random search lol.
Not sure but maybe combo of glue and strips??
That's one reason why I have insurance thru TMobile
It's 9per month I think and 99 for new phone.
So you spending money either way lol but less hassle
-----------
The tape isn't strong enough.
What I used for a Google pixel XL screen replacement is Tesa 61395 tape which is really strong and b7000 liquid glue to fill in the weak spots or gaps where there is no tape I could put in due to curved areas like corners

Thanks. I saw the B7000 but worried that it'll be too rigid and crack. I love in Florida and my phone sits kind of close to a cent, so heating & cooling is pretty extreme.
I didn't think of using it as a filler for flexible tape, though... Will think on it.

You have no clue which adhesive the OP is using let alone know if he's a "cheapskate" or not.
If you can't say something nice (or useful) maybe say nothing at all?
We're all friends here, trying to be more skillful with our tinkering. If you want to suggest a good adhesive, I'm sure he'd love to hear it.

It's clear his adhesive was cheap as it isn't sticking(or he isn't applying it properly) also if you read the thread op said he didn't want to use stronger adhesive because he's afraid it would be too ridged and break which is a load imo.
Maybe you should contribute and follow your own words of advice also if you read the thread someone already suggested better adhesive so there is no reason to suggest other ones but if I must 3m generally has good adhesive and b-7010 tape is another good go to, all stronger than the OEM crap he was buying.
