My phone has been turning off while charging overnight about twice a week for a few weeks now. It's consistently made me late for class, since I use my phone as my alarm... When I turn the phone on in the morning it's fully charged, just off.
It seems to happen most often on Tuesdays and Fridays (possibly only those days? not sure), which is when I have TiBu set to backup. I've tried reproducing the problem by running TiBu during the day (on and off charge) and can't get it to happen, so I'm not convinced that TiBu is causing it. I'm on stock 2.3.4 ROM with Entropy's latest DD (1/29 I think). I started using Entropy's DDs about a month ago, around when this started, so it's certainly possible that his kernel is causing it.. I just doubt it, since I'm sure other people would have had this problem as well.
Is there any app I could get which will help me figure out what's running when my phone turns off or something along those lines? Maybe find out RAM usage, things like that... Battery monitor widget shows no spikes in battery temperature during the night, so I don't think overheating is the problem.
Any ideas??
Same thing for me. I am currently testing what may cause that. For now I started to use different charger to see if it is the problem. As for kernel, my problem also started sometime after flashing Entropy's kernel on I9100 base (I think same with Siyah). Therefore, if the problem persists with different charger, my next step to roll back on kernel, maybe even flash Samsung stock one to see if problem still there. If nothing helps after all, well I think out phones may be defective.
Edit: I don't have TiBu, but I have MyBackup Root. It should not be any app that cause that.
i had this happen for about the first month i had my phone. I'd wake up and it wasn't on, seemed to be random times at which it would shut down(checked last readings in battery monitory widget). It hasn't happened in a while now, however I'm on a different kernal and ROM. I'm currently on siyah 2.6.11 and Turkbey V32.
At the time it happened i think i was using unnamed (dont remember which version) and Entropy's DD Kernel (again not sure which version).
Is it OFF (only need to press Power for 1-2 seconds to turn it on) or SoDed (need to hold Power for 10-15 seconds to force a reboot)?
If SoDed - Pull a /proc/last_kmsg after the reboot.

In my case it is OFF and charging (big Green battery icon in the center of the screen and charging).
So far with different charger, it didn't turn off, so I think it is charger... I am on your 1/30/12 kernel.
Same for me, if I tap the power button it shows the green charging battery, if I hold it for a couple seconds the phone boots up.
I just checked battery monitor widget, it happened around 7:31am this morning which means it can't have been TiBu, as that runs at 2am.
So far, during 2 days of testing. It is not the charger. I returned to stock 2.3.4 with e3 recovery (stock) and were not expecting any turn off. That leaves ROM, kernel or apps. Going to change kernel to 1/30/12 and 12/8/11 today and see...
My phone is having this problem too. Charging overnight, next morning, phone is completely off with the battery charging icon. Happened to me 3 times already.
Right now running UnNamed 2.2.1
I'm not 100% sure if this happened while I was on UnNamed 2.2.0
Im running Shostock 1.9.1 Was running Siyah newest. Reverted to Entropy 1-30, same problem, Reverted back to 12-8 charging now. Looks like it Might be a kernel issue but im guessing
There was no problem yesterday while charging, although I have Unnamed 1.3.2 with no apps installed and on 1/30/12 kernel. Need to confirm this one more time. It seems some app causing that crash, maybe Mobile Odin, BLN app or any other that has some connection to the kernel, need more time to find it....
Do you guys have Mobile Odin installed?
I never had mobile Odin installed when it happened to me. I'd lean towards it being ROM or kernel causing it because now I've not had it happen in a while.
when i ever have a SOD (Sleep of Death)....it usually doesn't show up as charging. it just shuts down and the battery is pretty much dead. So you guys are lucky but my advice is to make sure you don't undervolt. That is what I did and it was bad. lol
Yeah I have mobile Odin. I'm now on shostock with entropy 12/08 dd. My phone used to turn off Tuesday mornings (also Fridays... Not sure why it wasn't other days too), so I can report in the morning on whether or not it turns off tonight.

Doubtful. I've never had mobile Odin, but mine used to have the problem. I lean towards kernel, or possibly ROM. Don't wanna say for sure but it seems alot are on entropys dd, you tried a different kernel?

If I flash any stock based ROM, flash 1/30/12 kernel on top of it, and don't install any apps, my phone just does not turn off while charging. When I install something (so far again, I think it is Mobile Odin and my phone actually on charge now, so I will update this post in ~4 hours if my phone turns off or not). And it is possible that your problem is caused by different reason... I had Mobile odin 1.30 lite and i777 flash module installed.
I will try to check if Mobile Odin causes my phone to turn off with different kernel though.

Two out of two after I identified Mobile Odin as a problem. I will test it one more time, probably tomorrow, but this time I will install Mobile Odin 2.15.
For now my phone is charging and at 67% with 1/30/12 and no mobile odin, no shut downs so far.
I've been on SHOstock for about 5 days now and my phone hasn't turned off yet. Mobile Odin lite was one of the first applications I restored, since I wanted to switch to Entropy's DD.

Hello,
I have a AT&T galaxy s2 and it worked for past 10 days since i got it. but since yesterday while it was charging it decided to shutoff and flash the charging screen
my problem is similar to this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1363155
but I have got the original NFC battery and the problem just started yesterday.
while its got shutoff it displays battery charging (but the indicator is at 0 battery) it flashes like every second and after about 10 to 15 flashes, it become stable and displays the correct amount of battery charged and charging from there. (flash is gone) and now I can turn it on again.
The phone doesnt immediately shut off while plugged in to usb. it just some times shut off immediately and sometimes it stays good for minutes before it shuts off. For the moment I have plugged it on to the computer for like 15 minutes now and its good.
before this happened my battery was down to 0% after heavy use and the problem started while I was charging after that.
Is this somekind of battery related problem? Actually I cant just swap new one from at&t as im living in Sri Lanka and I have got this from ebay.
Please help me
Thanks
BTW I have tried changing roms kernels and all. icsscrewd, shostock, unnamed and siyah, entropy nothing fixed the problem
Follow this thread. It is known problem between few users (including me). Try to stay totally stock (this means don't install apps, stock rom, stock kernel). If your phone still turn offs on stock, well most likely it is defective. I haven't yet expected turns off after I flashed Entropy's 2/8/12 kernel and uninstalled some apps including Widgetlocker, SetCpu, Mobile Odin and few others that I cannot remember. If you have them, uninstall.

Well I didnt tried the stock rom yet. Im using 2/8/12 kernel and unnamed latest at the moment. I have widgetlocker on my purchased apps but I didnt installed it on this though.
But I have tried without any apps on icwscrewd, unnamed, shostock (just after flashing the rom) but problem is there
Sounds to me like the battery contacts are loose.
After updating to ICS I cannot charge my phone while it's off.
I always charge the phone during the night and never let it fully die but today I didn't see that the battery level is so low and my phone died now I cannot turn it on to charge it. I get constant reset, my LED flashes blue/red and it resets non stop.
2 nights ago forgot about that problem and woke up at 3 o'clock to find out that my phone has been restarting for about 4 hours.
Give any advice.
P.s. My girl's also with Neo, also updated to 4.0.4, same problem there...

I just found out after reading your post that I have the same problem but I removed some app so don´t know if has anything to do with removed app!
Downgraded to GB and you can charge your phone normally. After be careful to don´t let your phone battery complete drain.
I am trying some roms besides official to see if I found out one that can allow charging in off mode. Is annoying this….
EDIT1: I just made a clean update from GB to ICS without removing any app or installing any different kernel and is charging in off mode.
So this behavior any something to do or with removed app or with different kernel installation!
Have to find out.
EDIT2: No. Is not Kernell issue or Super User that I just flash by CWM. So last option is any removed app or eventually any combination of factors.
Yes, I am in the process of downgrading, good thing is that we have two Neo's so I can use the other one's battery
Dudes! I managed to charge my phone but darn it wasn't easy.
Now one of these is on the way: http://www.ebay.com/itm/190586739151?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649
Are you sure it's a hardware issue, because I've tried 4 different ICS ROMs (Stock ICS, JJDoctor's, KA20 and AOSP 4.0.4) and I've been able to charge my phone while off in all of them.
Maybe getting your phone to a service center will find the culprit.

Is not a hardware issue.
I also had the same problem but now I don´t!!!
I downgrade to GB and flash ICS again and problem is gone.
Why? Don´t know.
Probably is a combination of things.
I never said anything about hardware issue. At least don't remember it.
After flashing back to GB and upgrading to ICS the problem was gone until I removed all apps that don't use directly from system/vendor/app
Now I cannot charge again but hopefully I won't leave my battery to totally die again.

Chargemon, if I'm not mistaken, is replaced when installing cwm. This means I should be facing this problem as well. Let me check...
Sent from my MT15i using XDA
EDIT: I couldn't replicate the problem. The phone started charging normally when off. A few seconds in the light went from green to red, but I think it recalculated the battery from 90% to 89%, hence the switch. Perhaps this only happens when the battery is fully drained?
My problem is kind of strange.. when I turn off the phone, it thinks it's being charged (no cable plugged in).. and i'm unable to boot the OS as per usual. The only way for me to do it is to load CWM and choose the reboot option, which does work but only with 1 battery (a spare hyperion one). The stock battery and my other hyperion aftermarket battery does not work. Instead, it takes me to the stock recovery system.
I tried remedying this problem by doing wiping battery stats, but it doesn't help any. I also decided to make the jump from unnamed ROM (gingerbread) to an ICS rom (AOKP)
On top of that, the phone no longer makes a beeping sound when i plug the cable in, but it does charge the battery.
Another thing: the boot screen (when turning phone on) shows "samsung i9100" when i'm pretty sure my phone is an i777.. i might have done something to this phone when i got it about 10 months ago, but i don't remember. All i remember was rooting the phone and flashing it to unnamed ROM.
It seems like this might be a hardware issue, but i'm no expert.

I would try wiping cache and dalvik cache in cwm. Also, fix permissions in cwm. If that does nothing, I would try a different kernel. However, this may be an internal issue of the phone.

i just flashed to AOKP ics rom yesterday from unnamed ROM, so i doubt it's a a kernel issue. just tried wiping cache, dalvik cache, and fixed permissions. still the same issue. im afraid of shutting the phone off or changing the batteries now, which is a pain since the new ICS rom burns battery power like crazy.

Try to go to stock and see if the problem persists. If it does obviously a hardware issue
ultimately, if i really want to confirm, i'd probably have to do that. but i've already installed 2 different ROMs and the issue is still persistent, so i'm just going to assume it's a hardware issue. it also seems now that the phone no longer turns off. if i choose to turn it off, it'll just reboot the phone. this phone will have to last me another 9-10 months, i just hope it doesn't die out on me.
but yeah, i tried ICS for about a day and didn't like it. bad battery life, seems slower, and less user intuitive UI.. so i'm going back to gingerbread.

you know samsung has factory warranty for that kind of stuff.
i got my phone refurbished, about 9 or so months ago.. it only came with 3 months for the warranty. i guess getting a returned phone ended up biting me in the ass.
now the phone is overheating when im charging it.. looks like it's going to crap out on me soon.
Download the stock 2.3.4 firmware from the download repository. Do a full wipe including system data cache and dalvik. Boot into download mode hook up Odin and flash the stock firmware. If its a hardware issue your problems will persist in which case u could sell it on eBay for parts. If its a software issue that will fix it.
Sent from my SGH-I777 using xda premium
that's what i'll probably have to do tomorrow. if i remember correct, rooting the phone on 2.3.4 wasn't that straight forward, so i'd have to read up on how to do that again. but im just gonna leave it as is right now.
the phone acts really weird. when i took out the battery and replaced it with another one, it would keep doing the same thing. so then i plugged the phone into the USB charger and tried turning it on - that worked.
if it's a hardware thing, it's got to be something to do with the battery sensor. the phone is simple to remove, so i wonder if i can replace it myself.
i believe my phone is now semi-FUBAR.. it still runs, but seems like the battery sensor issue is a hardware one. i just tried doing a stock flash/odin thingy, and it still has the same issues... also, the phone is now permanently showing as MTP connected. i am also seeing decreased battery life.. only lasts about 1/2 a day now.
i guess i learned my lesson.. don't switch out the batteries too often, or your phone will die.

Hi all,
recently I flashed Ressurection Remix v3.8 with Siyah kernel 3.0.15
it worked pretty well but from time to time my phone would freeze up, get really warm and reboot (or not, and possibility to turn it on is to take the battery out and turn it back on)
after the phone is switched back on, the battery goes to 1% or 3 % and switches off quite quickly.
when I plug it in to charge it almost immediately goes back to the original battery charge
does anyone recognize this problem?
or if not any ideas whether it is an issue with the rom, kernel, radio or something else?
many thanks

I recognise your problems.
1. "The phone will freeze up" may be caused by some user unstable settings on the kernel, or the general instability of your ROM + the kernel combo, or maybe you are using a conflicting script.
- Next time your phone freeze up, just hold down the power button for about 8-10 seconds instead of removing the battery.
- to solve this problem,
a. Reset all your kernel settings to default
b. remove any other scripts that might be running on your phone.
c. try to track what activity normally trigger this freeze up
d. If the problem persists, you can try another kernel.
2. "after the phone is switched back on, the battery goes to 1% or 3 % and switches off quite quickly". this one may be caused by the fact that your fuel gauge chip is not yet settled.
- to solve this one,
a. charge you phone,
b. Install and run Extweaks, under misc, select Reset Fuel Gauge chip.
c. Exit extweaks and leave your phone untouched for about 1hr to allow it to settle down.
Thanks, I'll give it a try!

Did your battery run out of charge?
how many hours/mins can your phone work on battery when idle and when used?
You can try out a friend's battery and test if your problem still persists.

I don't think so as it happens at all different kinds of percentages, and when the phone restarts its mostly between 1% and 3%
on a single full charge when idle, the battery goes about 11 hrs
unfortunately none of my friends have a samsung - the battery of their iphone is not removable (... ok, lets not go there)
I did notice when it does happens, I am almost always using my phone (playing music, surfing, facebook etc), there is not really a particular app that is running when it happens (well maybe in the background)
also, about 5 seconds before it switches off my screen flickers, not sure if that is related (but I'm pretty sure it is)
thanks
My phone has been doing the exact same thing, screen flickers a few seconds then switches off, then the battery level has fallen ridiculously on reboot. Did you ever get to the bottom of this?

Hi. I have a very frustrating issue I hope someone can help with.
Over the last 3 days or so, my s2 has started to randomly shut itself down. It only appears to happen when I'm using an app, nothing specific, it can happen anytime.
The battery level has been anything from around 75% to 30%.
Sometimes when I turn it back on, the battery shows I am at 1 or 2 %, making me think it might be some kind of calibration problem, but I've tried the suggested method to no avail. I've also completely fresh installed the Rom I was on (neat Rom) and tried another (disaster Rom) but the problem remains.
Can anyone suggest what could be causing the random shut downs?
Thank you

Your phone(battery) has insane gauge chip search for this it answer in your question(it's only for battery)
Happy new year

Hi, thanks for the reply. I'm not sure my issue is to do with the guage chip directly, as my phone will switch itself off at any battery level. The issue designed in the other thread its having something like 56% and then having a much lower value after an intended reboot.
Shutdown it's called sleep of death( scary name) but it not death it's just sleeping forever... it problem with your kernel and battery problem is insane gauge chip...
Happy new year

I've just charged to full charge, unplugged - and within 2 minutes, the phone froze, could not do anything - so i pressed the power button until it went off, and it booted back up again without me doing anything - when it booted, it showed i had 2% battery. Then it did the same thing, froze, i had to reboot - then it showed 37% battery.........no idea what's going on apart from maybe a faulty battery...
Buy new battery. It was here on the forum a few times.
Yes. When phone hot(sometimes not) it take battery about 50-60%(I don't know exactly) but sometimes it add battery...
If you flash siyah kernel with stweaks(5 version) you can reset it but chip do funny thing even you reset...
Happy new year

try Battery caliberation app ...
if it doesnt work buy a new battery
What are you talking about ? It's not battery Fault it's Insane Gauge Chip.... And Battery Calibration not helping...
I decided to go the whole hog and go back to a stock unrooted ICS, after wiping everything, then CFRoot - then reinstalled Neatrom light - currently restoring apps via Titanium - fingers crossed...
I think you don't have anymore BSOD But if you have flash Syiah kernel
Try new kernel and reset fuel gage
Try installing a new kernel like siyah or dorimanx and then reset your battery log this should resolve your problem if not buy a new battery.

Thank you
Karf

I think I have a very similar issue. The randomly reboots happens several times a day, it does not happen though when charging (never). By now I'm on jb leak and still have the issue. When it shuts down, the sreen dims a bit and then it's gone, the weird thing is that often I have to pull the battery or charge the phone before reboot is possible, the battery shows different values after rebooting, sometimes close to what was before (especially when rebooting on charger), and sometimes way off the values before. I came initially from slimrom with siyah or dorimanx kernel, I really hoped jb leak would help (also tried different kernels), but it didn't. It also seems to me that it happens more often with the sd card (32gb) and without the phone seems more stable, but still it happens from tme to time. Once the screen dim (only one or two steps) and shut down even happend when in CWM recovery, is it maybe hardware related? It's very hard to find the source of the problem, anybody else experience similar issues? By the way the shutdown I have is not a proper shut down, the phone doesn't show the message "is shutting down".
I've completely wiped, used Odin to go back to ics stock, installed cfroot, then installed neatrom light. Had the same issue, so I've installed siyah, and used stweaks to reset the battery fuel gauge. I've only been off charge for 10 mins so far, but normally it would have shut down by now, so here's hoping...

Update - battery was at 89%, and the phone shut down, when rebooted, it showed 28%, then when plugging in while it was shut down, the battery icon showed about 50%. Like a previous reply, it never happens on charge, so it does appear that the battery is knackered, time to go shopping I guess :-\

I had the same problem - SOD several times a day. I change the batery with a fresh new samsung 2000 mA one.
Unfortunatelly SOD came back, but I found a trick: turn off WiFi. Use it only manually.
For the past 3 months I succeded to have 0 SOD's.
I know that manual WiFi is a setback but it works with those experiencing SOD.
Hope it will be usefull.
