[Q] problems with my phone... how to track down the problem - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
recently I flashed Ressurection Remix v3.8 with Siyah kernel 3.0.15
it worked pretty well but from time to time my phone would freeze up, get really warm and reboot (or not, and possibility to turn it on is to take the battery out and turn it back on)
after the phone is switched back on, the battery goes to 1% or 3 % and switches off quite quickly.
when I plug it in to charge it almost immediately goes back to the original battery charge
does anyone recognize this problem?
or if not any ideas whether it is an issue with the rom, kernel, radio or something else?
many thanks

What is the real version of your Siyah kernel? because Siyah 3.0.x can never boot RR 3.8!

I recognise your problems.
1. "The phone will freeze up" may be caused by some user unstable settings on the kernel, or the general instability of your ROM + the kernel combo, or maybe you are using a conflicting script.
- Next time your phone freeze up, just hold down the power button for about 8-10 seconds instead of removing the battery.
- to solve this problem,
a. Reset all your kernel settings to default
b. remove any other scripts that might be running on your phone.
c. try to track what activity normally trigger this freeze up
d. If the problem persists, you can try another kernel.
2. "after the phone is switched back on, the battery goes to 1% or 3 % and switches off quite quickly". this one may be caused by the fact that your fuel gauge chip is not yet settled.
- to solve this one,
a. charge you phone,
b. Install and run Extweaks, under misc, select Reset Fuel Gauge chip.
c. Exit extweaks and leave your phone untouched for about 1hr to allow it to settle down.

Thanks, I'll give it a try!

hmmm didn't quite work:
1.
- reset the kernel
- removed all init.d scripts
- no idea how to do that :-s
- going to try this now (any suggestions by any chance?)
2.
- couldn't use extweaks as my phone would switch off before I could open it
fun trivia... my battery level went to -1 when I switched my phone back on... darnit

Did your battery run out of charge?
how many hours/mins can your phone work on battery when idle and when used?
You can try out a friend's battery and test if your problem still persists.

I don't think so as it happens at all different kinds of percentages, and when the phone restarts its mostly between 1% and 3%
on a single full charge when idle, the battery goes about 11 hrs
unfortunately none of my friends have a samsung - the battery of their iphone is not removable (... ok, lets not go there)
I did notice when it does happens, I am almost always using my phone (playing music, surfing, facebook etc), there is not really a particular app that is running when it happens (well maybe in the background)
also, about 5 seconds before it switches off my screen flickers, not sure if that is related (but I'm pretty sure it is)
thanks

My phone has been doing the exact same thing, screen flickers a few seconds then switches off, then the battery level has fallen ridiculously on reboot. Did you ever get to the bottom of this?

I bought a new battery over the weekend, until now, the days and still nothing weird has happened
Maybe as jokesy mentioned, try a battery of a friend or buy a new one (they're not that expensive)
Good luck!

Just did with odin and tried to power off again, it turns on.
Any other ideas?
Pulled my battery to shut it off.
Started the phone, shut it off, and it stayed off. Weird!
Thanks for your help.
its not off, it's underclocked so low it can't even wake up the screen, higher your min clock speed to 600 and see if it still happens, of try removing setcpu or that other one that starts with a T.. whichever you use

I have the same problem, instead of switching off it just reboots, even if I power off from recovery.
What kernel are you using. I'm using Ninphetamine 2.0.5, with VillainROM 2.4.2, with Black Android Theme.
I'd rather not pull the battery, after seeing how flimsy the battery cover when I put it on first, I decided I'd try to avoid fiddling with it if at all possible

Well let me tell you about a little secret: if you hold the power button for 10 seconds the phone will shutdown instantly no matter what.

Doesn't work: it turns off, stays off for 2 seconds en boots up again.
I got same problem. Never flashed, never rooted. Got original 2.3.3.
I think I#ll try to flash it to fix it.
got a similar problem. probably not related. after unplugging it from a full charge, the phone kept making the "USB connected" sound. when turned off, it would do one of two things: display the big battery charging indicator while flashing the overheat indicator or turn itself back on.
while powered on, the battery icon will change from charging to not charging. I checked the USB socket and doesn't seem to be malfunctioning and there isn't anything shorting out the contacts. so far now, the battery level is at 87 percent after 48 minutes not in use. and now it's not making the sound anymore. I suppose the battery is malfunctioning.

I got a mixed-up thing of the issues on this topic..
When I take off the power socket, the symbol that shows "charging" remains there, and also, it is completely impossible to turn off the phone..
Whenever I turn it off, hard, or standard mode, it turns on again after 2 seconds..
And even if I remove the battery, I put it on again, and then it's back on in 3 sec....
Uh, and when I plug the charger in, when the battery is completely discharged, I have to take it out and back in , several times, before anything appears on screen, and even when it does, there is a temperature warning sign , and a yellow one which usually appear...
I'm getting very frustrated since I just paid 5000 nok (920 USD) for this phone..
And while I really begun to like Android, I guess I'll have to switch back to iPhone with a 4S, or to some better android device, since yes, the gs2 is cool , but I can't stand such issues, since I do run business things, and the phone is of vital importance for me, and not just a console/browsing crap.
Has anyone got any solution on this issue?
It would be crap if I had to send it to service, since it would take a lot of time, and I would have then to buy another temporary phone in the meanwhile...
PLEASE, HELP!
I had this problem, i cleaned the USB port out but that didn't stop it, but i think it helped. I then drained the battery to nothing and it has now stoppped. It's a battery problem, as it didn't switch off like it does when it hits low battery it just died. The battery readings were also inacurrate and every now and then it would do a weird thing like flashing it was charging, but it wasn't. I tried software etc.. and clean wipe before i tried the hardware, so it wasn't the rom i was running. I think the battery is on it's way out, so I've bought a new one.

Did this actually help? I had all the symptoms everyone has been describing and sent it to Samsung for repair. Their response was that the phone was stuck trying to download a PRL update, but as soon as I got the phone back from them and charged my battery to 100%, removing the phone from the charger caused everything to start again. I'm not entirely sure it is the battery, but have no other ideas.
USB charging port is dead.
Buy a new one on ebay and replace it.

Hi all.
Had similar problems about one month after getting my s2. I have unlocked sim card, rooted it and flashed some kernel, shyah i think. And left it with stock rom (Android 4.0). As it was under warranty i reverted completely to stock and took it to the carrier. After one day got it back but they said it had no problem. The fact is that i could in fact turn it off again. After a few days it was back so i flashed a custom rom (resurrection remix at that time) and never had it again.
Now I'm with alliancerom and apolo kernel for a few months and never had it again.

[Q] Random shutdowns

I've had this phone since the end of October, and recently (within the last 2 weeks), I have noticed that it will just turn off randomly and the power button becomes unresponsive. I have to do a battery pull to get it to power back on. This happens 2-3 times per day.
I have only rooted it; no cfw or anything. Does anyone have this problem or a solution?
Thanks
This happens to me some times as well. I found my cause was when I used miui locker. I'm rooted running latest ICScrewed ROM

Be sure to check the battery level.
I have seen this issue when the battery is defective and
will not hold at least a 15% charge at normal shutdown.
The battery level bar may not be accurate, so you might want to
test it with a new battery.
Good Luck!
Well, once I pull the battery and reboot, the phone works fine again on the same charge. It will work for 2 days on the same charge; it just turns off several times. I guess it would be easier to buy another battery than go through the hassle of dealing with a Samsung RMA or AT&T.
I use JuiceDefender if that would make any difference.
My girlfriend and I had the same issue and it turned out to be widget locker, so if you use that it may be the cause.

It's a Sleep of Death.
Are you undervolting?
If on the stock kernel, are you using SetCPU?
Long-press of power (more than 10-15 seconds) should reset you without a battery pull.

Had the same issue, I a fit of frustration I removed a bunch of apps all at once, and the problem went away. I suggest removing apps that you have recently downloaded till you find what's causing the issues.
Symptoms describe what entropy suggested. (sleep of death).
Tried a factory reset yet? You could go app by app as well till you find the culprit.

I got frustrated and removed a bunch of apps all at once like hd779 did, as well as disabled juicedefender. I have not messed with the cpu or voltage. I did all this last night and it hasn't died yet, so maybe something worked.
Thanks for the tips.
Did you install the recent update, my issue did not start until I installed it, but like I said I uninstalled a bunch of apps all at once so I could not indentify which app it was, my hypothesis is there is an app or apps out there that do not play nice with the latest update.
I did not have the update installed. As a matter of fact, the thing won't update. I've tried about 5 times and it keeps rebooting and telling me that the update was interrupted and it just gives up.
I'm going to turn on juicedefender later today to see if that was the culprit.

I have a similar issue and the solution you provided worked every time. Is there any way to get rid of this? I am using CM7.1.
When I take my phone to use, screen wouldn't switch on pressing power button. Only way to resolve would be to long press power button and it restarts. I never had to do a battery pull. Doesn't happen frequently. May be 4-5 times over 2-3 months time period.
I just recently installed setcpu and tried changing min and max frequencies. But I have encountered this issue even before installing this app.
I used to use Load Monitor to fix the Sleep of Death issue. But ever since rooting, changing to Entropy's kernel, loads of battery optimizations, Llama configurations (not sure what did it), the Sleep of Death problem has gone away and I can do without the Load Monitor app.

Grab the contents of /proc/last_kmsg after you've rebooted with a long press of power. (Hopefully the CM7.1 kernel supports ramconsole. I've been so busy patching up to update3 that I haven't had a chance to coordinate with those guys.)

[Q] Phone turns off at night when charging

My phone has been turning off while charging overnight about twice a week for a few weeks now. It's consistently made me late for class, since I use my phone as my alarm... When I turn the phone on in the morning it's fully charged, just off.
It seems to happen most often on Tuesdays and Fridays (possibly only those days? not sure), which is when I have TiBu set to backup. I've tried reproducing the problem by running TiBu during the day (on and off charge) and can't get it to happen, so I'm not convinced that TiBu is causing it. I'm on stock 2.3.4 ROM with Entropy's latest DD (1/29 I think). I started using Entropy's DDs about a month ago, around when this started, so it's certainly possible that his kernel is causing it.. I just doubt it, since I'm sure other people would have had this problem as well.
Is there any app I could get which will help me figure out what's running when my phone turns off or something along those lines? Maybe find out RAM usage, things like that... Battery monitor widget shows no spikes in battery temperature during the night, so I don't think overheating is the problem.
Any ideas??
Same thing for me. I am currently testing what may cause that. For now I started to use different charger to see if it is the problem. As for kernel, my problem also started sometime after flashing Entropy's kernel on I9100 base (I think same with Siyah). Therefore, if the problem persists with different charger, my next step to roll back on kernel, maybe even flash Samsung stock one to see if problem still there. If nothing helps after all, well I think out phones may be defective.
Edit: I don't have TiBu, but I have MyBackup Root. It should not be any app that cause that.
i had this happen for about the first month i had my phone. I'd wake up and it wasn't on, seemed to be random times at which it would shut down(checked last readings in battery monitory widget). It hasn't happened in a while now, however I'm on a different kernal and ROM. I'm currently on siyah 2.6.11 and Turkbey V32.
At the time it happened i think i was using unnamed (dont remember which version) and Entropy's DD Kernel (again not sure which version).
Is it OFF (only need to press Power for 1-2 seconds to turn it on) or SoDed (need to hold Power for 10-15 seconds to force a reboot)?
If SoDed - Pull a /proc/last_kmsg after the reboot.

In my case it is OFF and charging (big Green battery icon in the center of the screen and charging).
So far with different charger, it didn't turn off, so I think it is charger... I am on your 1/30/12 kernel.
Same for me, if I tap the power button it shows the green charging battery, if I hold it for a couple seconds the phone boots up.
I just checked battery monitor widget, it happened around 7:31am this morning which means it can't have been TiBu, as that runs at 2am.
So far, during 2 days of testing. It is not the charger. I returned to stock 2.3.4 with e3 recovery (stock) and were not expecting any turn off. That leaves ROM, kernel or apps. Going to change kernel to 1/30/12 and 12/8/11 today and see...
My phone is having this problem too. Charging overnight, next morning, phone is completely off with the battery charging icon. Happened to me 3 times already.
Right now running UnNamed 2.2.1
I'm not 100% sure if this happened while I was on UnNamed 2.2.0
Im running Shostock 1.9.1 Was running Siyah newest. Reverted to Entropy 1-30, same problem, Reverted back to 12-8 charging now. Looks like it Might be a kernel issue but im guessing
There was no problem yesterday while charging, although I have Unnamed 1.3.2 with no apps installed and on 1/30/12 kernel. Need to confirm this one more time. It seems some app causing that crash, maybe Mobile Odin, BLN app or any other that has some connection to the kernel, need more time to find it....
Do you guys have Mobile Odin installed?
I never had mobile Odin installed when it happened to me. I'd lean towards it being ROM or kernel causing it because now I've not had it happen in a while.
when i ever have a SOD (Sleep of Death)....it usually doesn't show up as charging. it just shuts down and the battery is pretty much dead. So you guys are lucky but my advice is to make sure you don't undervolt. That is what I did and it was bad. lol
Yeah I have mobile Odin. I'm now on shostock with entropy 12/08 dd. My phone used to turn off Tuesday mornings (also Fridays... Not sure why it wasn't other days too), so I can report in the morning on whether or not it turns off tonight.

If I flash any stock based ROM, flash 1/30/12 kernel on top of it, and don't install any apps, my phone just does not turn off while charging. When I install something (so far again, I think it is Mobile Odin and my phone actually on charge now, so I will update this post in ~4 hours if my phone turns off or not). And it is possible that your problem is caused by different reason... I had Mobile odin 1.30 lite and i777 flash module installed.
I will try to check if Mobile Odin causes my phone to turn off with different kernel though.

Two out of two after I identified Mobile Odin as a problem. I will test it one more time, probably tomorrow, but this time I will install Mobile Odin 2.15.
For now my phone is charging and at 67% with 1/30/12 and no mobile odin, no shut downs so far.
I've been on SHOstock for about 5 days now and my phone hasn't turned off yet. Mobile Odin lite was one of the first applications I restored, since I wanted to switch to Entropy's DD.

[Q] Stuck in a bootloop with Siyan 3.0.1

Okay guys and guyettes, I flashed the Siyah 3.0.1 kernel to my lovely S2 but my battery died overnight and now the darned thing won't boot. Due to an issue with the kernel, it automatically tries to boot when the phone is plugged in to charge, but not having enough power to boot up the thing dies and tries again. Continuously. It won't go to recovery mode and if I try to launch download mode it tells me it can't because of the low battery and then starts bootlooping again. Please please help, I've been without my phone for a day and I'm away from home with limited internet access so I REALLY NEED IT D:
pull out the battery keep sometime out, and put back and leave it for 1-2 hours for charging....then boot and restore your previouse kernel
I've tried leaving the battery out overnight, but whenever I put it in and try to charge it just does the same thing. Automatically tries to turn on, doesn't have enough power to power on, shuts down, and tries again :-/
You need a new charger battery or find some way of charging your battery outside of the phone.

Did you use SetCPU or Voltage Settings app to tweak with the frequencies/voltages? Theres a high chance that the Siyah you flashed doesn't support the frequency you have on your device. Id tell you to go into that app and restore defaults.
I was on NEAK before and flashed Siyah on top of it and it constantly kept rebooting and then i realized that if you get constant reboots, they mention to play with the voltage settings.
Try it out, maybe lower it from 1200Hz to 1000Hz being the max.
Let me know if it helps!
Happened to me once when I let battery run down too much. I left it charging in bootloop for a while, then unplugged charger, boot the phone, and replugged charger.
Well that was the issue of the kernel but it was solved later. For ur problem try to charge ur battery using master charger. Also try to go to recovery mode while charging and charge for a while and reboot ur phone.

I've left it "charging" in bootloop overnight but it still won't turn on enough to set it charging properly :-( it also won't enter recovery mode so I can't leave it charging at that. My housemate back home has an S2 so it looks like I'm stuck without a phone until I can get back and borrow his phone to charge my own :-/
Hmmm. This is a long shot, but try this: plug the phone in. Then, while it is booting and the phone is still plugged in, take the battery out. (this used to work with my old Motorola Milestone - it would stay on even when the battery was out)
If it stays on, put the battery back in and hope for the best. Otherwise, you'll need to either acquire an external battery charger, or wait til you can borrow your buddy's phone to charge your battery.
Plese change such headings.....
A request to the members to change such headings...which directly give a bad impression of a product wich is an outcome of very hardwork of some dedicated devs....this may be only your case with Siyah kernel which might be a result of your earlier config, whereas thousands of users are using the same flowlessly....
thank you

[Q][help] S2 randomly shuts down

Hi. I have a very frustrating issue I hope someone can help with.
Over the last 3 days or so, my s2 has started to randomly shut itself down. It only appears to happen when I'm using an app, nothing specific, it can happen anytime.
The battery level has been anything from around 75% to 30%.
Sometimes when I turn it back on, the battery shows I am at 1 or 2 %, making me think it might be some kind of calibration problem, but I've tried the suggested method to no avail. I've also completely fresh installed the Rom I was on (neat Rom) and tried another (disaster Rom) but the problem remains.
Can anyone suggest what could be causing the random shut downs?
Thank you
Karf
Are you undervolting/ under clocking this can cause a sod
Hi. Nothing like that, just used neat Rom or disaster Rom as they come.

Your phone(battery) has insane gauge chip search for this it answer in your question(it's only for battery)
Happy new year

Hi, thanks for the reply. I'm not sure my issue is to do with the guage chip directly, as my phone will switch itself off at any battery level. The issue designed in the other thread its having something like 56% and then having a much lower value after an intended reboot.
Shutdown it's called sleep of death( scary name) but it not death it's just sleeping forever... it problem with your kernel and battery problem is insane gauge chip...
Happy new year

I've just charged to full charge, unplugged - and within 2 minutes, the phone froze, could not do anything - so i pressed the power button until it went off, and it booted back up again without me doing anything - when it booted, it showed i had 2% battery. Then it did the same thing, froze, i had to reboot - then it showed 37% battery.........no idea what's going on apart from maybe a faulty battery...
Buy new battery. It was here on the forum a few times.
Yes. When phone hot(sometimes not) it take battery about 50-60%(I don't know exactly) but sometimes it add battery...
If you flash siyah kernel with stweaks(5 version) you can reset it but chip do funny thing even you reset...
Happy new year
Paulius
try Battery caliberation app ...
if it doesnt work buy a new battery
What are you talking about ? It's not battery Fault it's Insane Gauge Chip.... And Battery Calibration not helping...
I decided to go the whole hog and go back to a stock unrooted ICS, after wiping everything, then CFRoot - then reinstalled Neatrom light - currently restoring apps via Titanium - fingers crossed...
I think you don't have anymore BSOD But if you have flash Syiah kernel
Try new kernel and reset fuel gage
Try installing a new kernel like siyah or dorimanx and then reset your battery log this should resolve your problem if not buy a new battery.

Hi. I have a very frustrating issue I hope someone can help with.

I think I have a very similar issue. The randomly reboots happens several times a day, it does not happen though when charging (never). By now I'm on jb leak and still have the issue. When it shuts down, the sreen dims a bit and then it's gone, the weird thing is that often I have to pull the battery or charge the phone before reboot is possible, the battery shows different values after rebooting, sometimes close to what was before (especially when rebooting on charger), and sometimes way off the values before. I came initially from slimrom with siyah or dorimanx kernel, I really hoped jb leak would help (also tried different kernels), but it didn't. It also seems to me that it happens more often with the sd card (32gb) and without the phone seems more stable, but still it happens from tme to time. Once the screen dim (only one or two steps) and shut down even happend when in CWM recovery, is it maybe hardware related? It's very hard to find the source of the problem, anybody else experience similar issues? By the way the shutdown I have is not a proper shut down, the phone doesn't show the message "is shutting down".
I've completely wiped, used Odin to go back to ics stock, installed cfroot, then installed neatrom light. Had the same issue, so I've installed siyah, and used stweaks to reset the battery fuel gauge. I've only been off charge for 10 mins so far, but normally it would have shut down by now, so here's hoping...

Update - battery was at 89%, and the phone shut down, when rebooted, it showed 28%, then when plugging in while it was shut down, the battery icon showed about 50%. Like a previous reply, it never happens on charge, so it does appear that the battery is knackered, time to go shopping I guess :-\

I had the same problem - SOD several times a day. I change the batery with a fresh new samsung 2000 mA one.
Unfortunatelly SOD came back, but I found a trick: turn off WiFi. Use it only manually.
For the past 3 months I succeded to have 0 SOD's.
I know that manual WiFi is a setback but it works with those experiencing SOD.
Hope it will be usefull.
