Basically I have this idea of buying a lower priced tablet from China and then root it. Now I'm not just look for a 10", a 8" would be even perfect but I'm just saying
Do you guys think this would go over? Only problem is I'd have to find a tablet that has decent amount support and work on it.
Lend me your thoughts as I've thought about this today while fooling with the GTab at Sears.

At the moment, anything that's cheaper than the GTab is not comparable in terms of hardware specs. The Notion Ink Adam is the one exception, but availability is a significant issue, as is (potentially) build quality.
The general consensus on most of the sub $250 tablets from China, from almost every review site, is "You shouldn't buy this tablet at any price point."
The main issues you need to look for are a) capacitive touch screen rather than resistive, b) reasonable battery life, and c) any hint that someone has brought the OS up to a more current version. Many of the Chinese tablets a) ship with a resistive touch screen, b) have battery life on the order of 3 hours, and c) are still running 2.1, with absolutely no modding community - not to mention they're all running much slower processors in general.
All of that being said, there are about 2 million tablets that are going to be released in the next couple of months that will feature similar hardware, and I'm sure some of them will be at the GTab price point, or possibly below. If you're unsure, my advice would be to be patient.

Really? I wasn't aware that is was possible to fail to successfully root the G-tab. The instructions are so simple.

Rooting is easy on the nook color and gtablet but installing custom roms...the gtablet is way easier. IMO, the roms available for the nook color are not as stable as the ones available for the gtablet. The nook color is still a work in progress when it comes to loading a stable 2.2.
I have both devices and I'm stuck on 2.1 on the nook because the 2.2 roms seem to be hit and miss. With the gtablet, I'm waiting on a stable 2.3 rom but I'm not in a rush because I'm happy with the rom I have now on the gtablet.
The G-Tablet is a pretty unique product right now, but as others have said above that will all change very soon. Tegra 2 tablets will really hit the matket hard this year, so if you have any reservations I'd say wait and see what is available in the next 6 months.

When I say failing I mean after root, the problems you run into regarding FC's, certain apps not working or opening at all. Certain coding failures I see riddled in the Dev forum. Of course Im still looking but it just seem a lot of people had problems with certain things not working or getting unsual errors.
I know you run into this will any root but it just seems a bit more than I'm use to.
EDIT: XMR has given a bit more substance to my arguement since he owns both. I do see a lot of people having problems with the newest Dec. rom on the Nook.

Toshiba and Asus both have tablets coming out, as does almost every other manufacturer. Search for CES coverage and you'll see no shortage of info on them.

This post was in Jun, At this point I have had 2 gtabs, the second has had hardware problems since I got it. I am sending back to woot for a refund.

I'm reading lots of good things about the HP Touchpad, and I'm planning to take a tablet just these days.
I was comparing the new Amazon Kindle Fire and the new Nook Tablet (aka. Nook Color 2) which are about to come out this month.
Unfortunately I'm from Italy so Amazon will not be a good option for me at last...
Suddenly I stumbled upon this HP Touchpad: lots of good reviews, lots of happy feedbacks, 9.7'' (which would be awesome for me as I'm gonna study on it lots of university pdf lessons too), good development community (Dual Boot WebOS and Android? Awesome!), CM support, all made me think it should be my best choice, but...
I'm just recently aware of the fact that HP Touchpad production is discontinued now, and so I'm really worried about HP's warranty/support of the product if I'd buy it now.
Also I'm worried about future updates (from development community mainly), I'd really like to develop for Android OS on this tablet if I'm gonna buy it.
I'm not a big fun of cameras and gps (I have another smartphone and real camera for those), so the lack of those is not a problem for me.
Also, my budget is ONLY around 200-230 bucks, not even near 300 bucks.
Finally, would you suggest this HP Touchpad to someone that's gonna buy a tablet NOW, is it still a good choice?
If the answer is yes, could you please explain why and suggest where to buy for worldwide delivery?
If not, could you please explain why in details and what would you suggest instead?

At last, I managed to get a Touchpad for myself, spent around € 170 (yeah I'm talking in my own currency), which is totally worth it!
First day I updated WebOS to version 3.0.4, installed Preware with new kernel and governor at 1,5 Ghz.
Later on the same day, I installed the last CyanogenMod alpha release with SOD fix.
Guys, what can I say...this device is totally awesome!
I've tried lots of times the iPad 2, and also the new Galaxy Tab 10.1, and this Touchpad really is on the SAME level of experience (especially once you "unlock" the 1,5 processors).
I must say, WebOS for multi tasking and productivity, is far more professional and has really better performance than Android (and potentially could have been on same level of iOS if other nice updates would have come along), it's a real pleasure to use it.
Not to mention that the CyanogenMod is actually feeling as a real Beta, and Android on this Tablet is awesome too.
For ~ $200 this is a real bargain.
I don't even worry about WebOS future nor HP future anymore, as ICS has come out now and CyanogenMod's team will surely surprise us with a cool Alpha release the next 1-2 months or so (hoping).
And if anything goes wrong, the WebOS Doctor is the key for not breaking your warranty almost 99% of the times.
It's really difficult to break this Tablet from what I've seen.
I just hope, if anything really goes wrong on hardware side, that HP support for warranty will be good enough, hoping it will be available here in EU aswell.
If any of you knows anything about it, please share!

Current WebOS works well in multitasking, but the original one was really slow. Few cards opened and you literrally had issues with typing on virtual keyboard, really annoying stuff, even on overclocked (1.5GHz) version. Android was working way better then, felt perfectly smooth and so on, but for now, since it drains battery more and has some WiFi connectivity issues WebOS is just fine ;-)
Looking forward to ICS to get it's full potential.
I'm very pleased with the support of HP for TouchPad. I live in France and I'm a very lucky man because I could buy 4 TP in fire sale: 1 16GB, 1 32GB and 2 64GB. I have 1 64GB sent to repair center in Hungary because of the cracks, after 1,5 month I haven't yet seen any cracks, 1 16GB sent 2 times to repair center because of the touch screen (after the first repair, the problem couldn't be solved). Normally the tablet returns back in 10 days (by UPS), and totally free

If I wasn't before, now I'm totally convinced I've done the best choice
I've just bought a Belkin case for iPad, and not so surprisingly it fits perfectly for Touchpad!
Even the holes for ports/buttons are at same positions
Sooooo happy with my touchpad. I was going to buy a Kindle fire, but when I saw the touchpads going for the same price on Ebay, I knew this would be the better deal.
Plus,I really like webOS. It works flawlessly on my work's wifi. Android devices trend to drop connection fairly often.

the touchpads in raw bang per buck is better than the fire and nook combined. you're looking at a 1.5ghz dual core processor that was underclocked to 1.2ghz for marketting purposes.
the IPS screen alone is worth 100 bucks in supply costs

I am running dual boot webos and cm7. I will never be more happy. My sister has nook color, and I have used it. My tp beats it to dust becoz of the speed and screen to name a few things. I have heard good reviews about kindle fire but still its e reader with customized and limited version of android which again will have to cracked to get full android experience. Nook tablet seems to be good but its still 7 inch screen.
I know u can run Ubuntu and android on tp right now. It looks like tp hardware is like hd2, means we will b able to run many different OS on it.

I know the Acer A510 has a slightly better (prime comparable) tegra 3 but I don't feel like theres that big of a performance gap. I know that the Acer is $50 more but forgetting about the price, what would you guys recommend considering your past experiences with Asus? Btw the Wifi and Gps issues seem to be fixed according to Anandtech in this version.

I was playing with the TF300 last week, it is nice but the screen is a lot darker compared to the TF201. I have had some problems with my TF201 that should not happen to a 2 month old tablet that has been taken well care of. And hearing the RMA horror stories on this board and others, I am starting to loose faith in Asus

yea but it seems to me that Asus has been trying to fix issues and keep customers happy. What problems after 2 months are you referring to?

I got those spots on the screen called LCD mura which seems to be very common with the Transformer Prime. I had a problem with the micro sd card slot, another very common problem and the docking port connector broke and the pins bent back. Fortunately Asus fixed it all under waranty

Very interesting but I'm still hesitating about what to choose. After reading the Acer A510 vs Asus Prime review, I will probably get an A510 but I need to investigate more.

I still feel the great thing about the Transformer Series is the Dock. If I wouldnt need it i'd look for any other tablet with good battery life and a full size USB port. But i still feel like you cant get a better well rounded deal than the Prime (or the tf300 if you want to save some money or dont need the better features of the prime).
I love to use the Prime without the dock for browsing/reading/gaming and stuff but lf of the time the thing is docked, there are so many situations like this one right now, or when emailing, taking notes etc. Wouldnt wanna miss it.
I have since bought the Acer A510 and for any of those hanging in the balance, this is an amazing device. The only issue I and others have with it is that it gets a warm/hot in the lower right hand corner. Mine to me doesn't feel that bad and it only happens when pushing the tablet with games. I absolutely don't regret my decision. Today is the last day of my 14 day return period and I will not be returning this thing. I know Asus has very good support but to me it seems like they mess stuff up and then put updates out in order to fix their own mistakes. Imo they should test their updates more. But that doesn't make Asus bad at all. If anyone has any questions I'll answer them.

To the owners of a prime, any known problem which haven't been fixed yet ?
I've read some words of prime owners which returned them due to "hardware problems"
I'm planning to use it on the field to watch/sort DSLR raw files (Canon 5DII) any of you tried this ? Is the Tegra fast enough to do this or will I be disappointed ?

Well if u pre order the a700 it only costs a little more than the a510 so I would rule out the a510. The prime tablet does have some issues with GPS and wifi. I haven't had any random reboots lately but I have been having troubles with games freezing. If u have the money and dont need a tablet right away go with the infinity. However, I am so fed up with Asus customer support that I recommend that if u don't need a keyboard go with the a700 for sure

I really wanted the keyboard dock so the TP seemed like the way to go. As far as waiting for the Infinity, its going to be basically the same device but with a better screen (which doesn't justify the extra price at least for me) and the plastic strip for the antennas which is supposed to cure the signal issues.
As far as the A700 goes....well, i just don't "pre-order" anything. For all we know, it may end up having all the same issues as the prime...or not...but with no track record there is no way to tell. If I was going to wait for something that isn't out yet, I'd wait a while longer after it's released to let the rest of you beta test it for me http://forum.xda-developers.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

The specs are great, but as far as release date goes, its only going to be released in China as of now. Hopefully it will come to the US but no one knows

my prime has been almost flawless from the very beginning...so i can't really comment on if there are fixes that need to be done
i still highly recommend it as it's still a beast of a performer...and the option of the keyboard dock is great
the wifi "problem" is almost non-existent...very few reported an actual problem..meaning they couldn't get signal... most are fine and the range has been much better with recent updates
i haven't really had the gps problem...but asus has been pretty good for the customer service regarding that. There was a asus tech following our issues on the boards and a free gps dongle was sent out if you requested it (like i said, i didn't have any problems...but free upgrades? i'll take it)
like someone else said, it's kind of hard to justify paying more for the infinity for just a better resolution...the tf300 is as good of a bet, but doesn't look nearly as nice/sexy
so...fingers crossed, my tablet has been great so far and i definitely would still recommend it
So TFP was supposed to be the best Android tablet when it came out (now it's TFP 700). It was not a terrible product by any means but it did fall short of expectations.
It's broken GPS, sketchy wifi, horrible web browser (if not rooted) and low read/write speeds making everything slower compared to the cheapest android tablet out there. But besides all that it works and works pretty well.
Now that I've experienced the best of Android, I can't spend any money on it again for a similar experience.
I think I'll try MS Surface when it comes out. If nothing else at least the web browsing won't be as terrible as on TFP.
I think I take Google Nexus 7 and if Google provide 10 Inc Tablet I take it. Asus good company, but they support very poor. If Flagship like Prime doesn't work properly (but I very like this Tab, I use Prime every day, and Tablet very good) I think Asus not interesting to support they devices, they only interesting to sell. If they provide very good firmware with all new features, like Android 4,1 ,like kernel 3,1+ and other, and this firmware work grate and long battary live, I change my mind and take next Tablet from Asus and tell my Friend that this good deal and if they have Tablet they need Asus

When I bought the prime a month ago (c4) I was aware of a lot of it shortcommings.
For me the prime works fine within its limitations. So my clear statement. I will stick with my prime at least
till next summer.
Then I will look may be a sufface pro or an ultrabook with touchscreen or even if Win 8 fails for me a new Win 7 ultrabook.
And I hear a lot of people think same.
The real looser are the current untrabook and notebook producer. Same like me a lot of ppl simple wait.

Absolutely not. The prime took form over function to a degree where it proved to be near useless on my trip- the reason I bought it. ASUS will not get another dime from me.
I have given up on Asus. I was hoping HTC would make the Nexus tablet. I have had great success with HTC Phones. This TFP was junk. From random reboots, sleep of death, horrible gps, and don't get me started on the WiFi! I like Samsung but their GPS is just as bad. I will pass on the Nexus 7.
I already pre-ordered the Nexus 7. Here is to hoping that with the support of Google, that Asus and Nvidia can get this one right!!

Alright, the GPS isn't so good (however not too bad) and ICS is a bit rough but I don't think that today there is any other tablet able to overcome ou TFP : TF700 simply has a 1080p panel and the nexus 7 has Jellybean (which will come soon at our TFP and probably fix somes issues).
I don't believe that there is any competitor for us, who just bought a 600 €/$ tablet 6 month ago ....
Thanks to one broken mainboard and the still remaining problems with screen flickering and the bootloader unlocker I am pretty sure, that ASUS will never ever get money from me again
A tablet for that much money and the screen is flickering and I cant unlock it? Due to this + bad WIFI and unusable GPS (which I would have accepted) this tablet is the worst investment in hardware I did in the past few years...
I just wanted a great gadget, now I cant even play with it, due to the locked bootloader that is not unlockable for me and many others
Asus is crap. I will never buy one of their products ever again, and will be sure to spread this opinion to all friends and family who ask me for tech advice.
Love my Prime, but will not be buying another ASUS product either.

LOL...a lot of people bought their Primes as a POSSIBLE replacement to a laptop.
My Alienware M18 has replaced my Prime, and I think I will go with a M11 Alienware to replace my Prime.
BUT, even a 4k laptop is not without its problems. AMD has yet to provide a proper driver for dual 7970m GPU's......:crying:
So you know what Asus is probably on par with other manufactures, always caught up in the hardware/specs race and not fully ready to release a product.

I run a business from my TFP. It's my baby. I think asus has been very accommodating. I can think of no other company that rolls out this manyupdates.
Regarding the problems, I think people exaggerate. Let's look at each one.
Browser issue. I've never really had any problem with my browser. But if I did, I have dozens of alternatives on the play store.
Dodgy wifi. There are 3 primes within my arms' reach. There's a c3, c4, and c5. I'm sorry, but I haven't seen any problem with the wifi.
Screen flickering. Again, I haven't seen any of that.
GPS. Ok, so only 1 out of the 3 primes I mentioned have working gps. But so what? Honestly, how many people use their prime as a gps device to navigate around? I'm the only person I've ever heard of to use a tablet as a gps navigation device. Also, don't you have a smart phone with a gps? Why not bluetooth it to your prime to navigate if you need to do it that bad?
I'm not saying I don't believe people are having these issues. I just don't believe these issues are that widespread. In my business, I can tell you that people seem to have 2 universal characteristics when it comes to their tech stuff. (1) People almost always blame someone/something else rather than themselves, and (2) people tend to exaggerate the problem.
For example, there was a guy that needed to send his tablet to me to fix. He swore up and down that it just stopped turning on and that it was asus's design flaw. When I received it in the mail, it was VERY VERY obvious to me that he had dropped it and the power button was depressed and out of alignment with the inner button. There was also another guy who crammed TWO micro-sd cards into the micro sdcard slot and ruined both his cards and the slot. He also swore up and down to me that it was asus's design flaw. Then there was the water damage case that, again, the owner swore up and down his prime was never anywhere near water. There was also a guy who totally screwed up his own PC but was too embarrassed to tell me about it. After I drilled him a bit, he finally admitted that he had one of those viruses that told him it was harmless and that all he needed to do was remove certain files from his system folder to get rid of it. The idiot actually went through and deleted his systems files.
The exaggerating cases are just as bad. Look, when you call someone up for tech support or help, you need to be precise. That's how we help you! I've had people give me end-of-the-world scenarios with their computers only to turn out that they accidentally physically switched off their wifi switch.
I am not an asus apologist. I think asus has a lot of improvements to make. That said, if you think another tablet manufacturer can do a better job, please by all means switch. After having owned a multitude of tablet devices and years of testing out various boards from many manufacturers, I'm sticking with asus's tablets. I will try to get myself an infinity when it's available.
It's my experience that online reviews don't paint a real picture of things. People tend to stay quiet when everything is fine and only write a review when they found something wrong. This phenomenon gives the false impression that most of whatever it is are defective.
Then there are the ones who want to screw over a business just because they can. I sent out an item via ups some time ago. It was suppose to arrive on the 19th via tracking but ups had a delay and it was delivered on the 21st. The customer wrote me an email blasting me for ups's delay. Very nasty email, actually. He even hinted that if I gave him a partial refund he wouldn't give me a negative review. Annoyed, I replied thanking him for assuming I had complete control over how ups operates. Well, you guessed it, I got that negative review. In the review, he said he received the item very very very very late and that I was rude and packaged the item very poorly (even though I wrapped it in two layers of bubble wraps). There's that exaggeration with reviews again.
So, yeah, guys, go ahead and switch to a different company if that makes you feel better. Just my 2 cents.
already pre-ordered a nexus 7. I might see what win 8 tablets talking about. but after nexus 7, ill be satisfied until tegra4 tablets release.
p.s. I LOVE THE PRIME!
I have an ASUS TF700t and keyboard on pre-order, and will be selling my good working Prime with its keyboard on eBay as soon as the new one comes in. That's what I did with my original Transformer and my current Prime. I expect that at the end of the year there will be some real Windows 8 tablets, such as the Microsoft Surface RT. I expect to "upgrade" to one of those in a similar manner. Great fun!

It will be a Samsung tablet that's for sure, not only do Samsung's Exynos SoCs consistently perform as on of the best SoCs on the market but Samsung's latest Android devices have been nothing but stellar.
The Prime was my first experience of Asus and it's definitely going to be last, in my opinion; Asus have absolutely shocking quality testing. Whilst people can post that they don't have any problems; for every one who doesn't have an issue, 100's do. The fact that Asus did not comprehend the impact of a full metal design on the WiFi and GPS performance speaks volumes about their pre-release testing.
I'm not an unreasonable person, I actually didn't care much for GPS on a tablet and hence why I've not been vocal about it, so I'm not complaining for the sake of it. However, since .21, I've always had pathetic browser performance, screen glitching where the status bar jumps up and down and sleep of deaths whilst docked. .28 comes along and fixes none of those issues but throws screen tearing on the left side of the screen into the mix, you can imagine how much that would annoy a consumer.
I'm happy to use applications off the market to make the experience better, for example I use thumb keyboard because Asus' stock keyboard is nothing but an embarrassment. I mean, why release a 10.1" tablet with a soft keyboard that doesn't have the option to split the keyboard in landscape orientation? You can't reach the keys in the middle of the screen, it's basic ergonomics and something I learnt in school when I was 16 and that's why it's embarrassing. Yet there's certain applications where I'm not willing to compromise as the loss of features are too great.
For example, the stock browser supports flash and direct syncing with my Google account. Nothing else does this as Chrome doesn't support flash. Another great example of how disorganised and unprofessional Asus are, is the whole GPS dongle shipping process. Not only are Asus incompetent to mess up GPS in the first place, they're stupid enough to mess up their attempt to resolve the issue.
For me it comes down to a simple question, am I happy with the £500 I spent on the Prime? The answer is no, as I could have bought a tablet that's £200 cheaper with a Tegra3 chip in that doesn't have the issues the Prime does. Would you put up with a TV unit that had screen tear down the side, with absolutely no acknowledgement from the manufacturer as to when it's going to get fixed?
Will certainly buy the nexus 7 as soon as it will be available around here. Don't know if i'll go for the infinity 700, since i lovethe prime except for its weak wifi speed on long range. I think i'll prefer to see what the windows8 tablets will be worth before going for a replacement for the prime of there ever will be one.

No way with ASUS, they are not getting another dime. And for that matter unless it surpasses the iPad in terms of smoothness and UI performance, I ain't getting another Android tablet, they are just not mature enough (phones are a different story, I will stick with Android phones).
Keeping my Transformer Prime TF201, adding a Nexus 7. If you NEVER buy stuff from any maker you get a bad device with in the end you will have nothing to buy.
I mean for a tablet you have who Asus and Samsung as top players, anyone else?

You can bet I will. I own several Moto products, an HTC and a Samsung. The 201 I wanted seeing how good the form factor was and hearing about quad-core power. After what I've been through with mine, the issues with the tablet and the company and trying to get a hold of someone competent enough to get a GPS dongle shipped to me, I'll never spend money on anything Asus again. I haven't had any of these issues with the other companies products, but this is just my personal experience with the devices I have purchased.
While I'm not saying there aren't people satisfied with their 201's you obviously are, for me I definitely didn't get what I spent $500+ on. I would probably have a more positive view of the company had I waited for the N7 and saved myself 400 or so plus the hardware and software problems over my 201 and dock but at least I learned the lesson I'll never spend that much again on an Asus tab.
