There's Hope for us all - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

I just got my new replacement prime today. I do not have any light leakage, gps, wifi, bluetooth, docking, serial # or dead pixel issues. It looks like they final got the issue worked out in the new primes.

how long did they have it?
they should offer us loaners, or a "once you receive the new one, mail us back your old one" type situation.

What does the serial number start with?

I've had one those non-issue TPs since early January

x2 to curiousity of the serial number? What issues did you have prior to repair?

Great news to hear. I'm sure the doubters will come asking you to do extensive testing and make vids as proof. Then once it is proved, they'll say you not testing right or make some other kind of excuse. Lol
So this is a new C serial number series device?

Do you notice anything different visually or firmware wise? Did they load ICS on it? Can also take screenshot of GPS.

No disrespect meant to the OP, but I've seen a number of these threads pop up, only to have the OPs come back in a day or two saying they were wrong - at least about the WiFi, BT and GPS problems, which exist on all Primes. It's almost always a classic case of a user trying to convince themselves that their new unit is perfect when it really isn't. I'd probably be guilty of it myself.

which serial number does it have? mine is also absolutely fine, no problems so far. S/N: BC

They have arrived..lmfao. To rain on the parade and blindly assume all devices are broke because theirs was. SMH

Sorry to annoy you, but it's true. Issues like light bleed, dead/stuck pixels, the glass separating from the display, etc. are legitimate reasons to exchange your Prime. However, the GPS, WiFi, and BT issues exist on all Primes - some just don't recognize their shortcomings based on their use cases.
Seriously, even Asus themselves came out and essentially said the GPS sucks, removed it from their advertising, and removed the shortcut to it in ICS, yet we still have people claiming a simple swap of Primes fixed their GPS issues. It's comical.

I just got a prime yesterday with the serial starting with CC. Didn't get a chance to fully test everything but I did notice very minimal bleeding on the bottom. It was loaded with honeycomb.

Yep. . . I have a BCOKAS serial number unit that has . . .
- No detectable light bleed on the screen
- No dead or stuck pixels
- Streams to Bluetooth over WIFI with no problems
- Has WIFI speeds and sensitivity that is identical to my Galaxy S2
- Has functional (though weak) GPS. (i.e. It will lock and generally stay locked even in a moving car if it is on the dash and has a good view of the sky).
This unit was purchased 1 week ago at a Best Buy in Duluth, MN. Having said all that, I do get concerned by all the reports of bad units. . .I keep wondering when mine is going to fail!

Do you have the latest update from Asus? The one with the GPS "fix" that messed up GPS.

First off, I am not certain at all that EVERY prime have WIFI/BT issues. The BT and WIFI performance of my Prime and my Galaxy S2 have been nearly identical in every scenario I have tested. I will agree, that even the best of them have a weak GPS signal . . .

Where can i get this Information? It doesn't seem to affect my device so i'm a little confused.

Out answer like the 4th time's a charm. After going through 3 primes ordered online, a local store finally got some in and it was my lucky day. Theres a little bit of backlight bleed but its minimal and nothing I'm gonna fuss about considering how many primes I've bought and returned forty other issues, the wifi is good, ics seems solid, just hoping I dont jinx myself by posting this here on xda.

There are countless threads including a huge amount of test data showing these problems. A search for "WiFi" will point you to them.

This needs to be answered every time it's stated: the latest update does NOT break GPS on every unit. I have three BC units (same hardware build, 0214) that have all been updated. Two have GPS that locks on outside within a minute and get as many as 12/14 satellites, and that can even lock indoors. I have one unit that takes 30 minutes or more to finally lock onto any satellites outdoors, and the most it's connected to at once is 5 satellites.
What's more interesting is: what's the variance here? I believe that the update breaks SOME units' GPS. The question is: what's different about those units?

Just checked and I've got it aswell, never noticed before. It's been reported a lot on the G S2, hopefully an update will sort it.
Cheers. As long as its not just mine I wont return it and, like you, will hope for an update to fix it.
Bit annoyed my last two mobiles have had this issue though, how difficult can it be to release a flagship phone without a simple problem like this?

I've always had exactly the same thing on my SGS. I only see it on indoor shots, or low light outdoors.
Edit: A little Googling turns up some additional info. HTC says SW problem. Also an indication it's on many devices and due to white balance adjustment.

Ok so how abouth this now?
IS this a software problem or hardware?
No need to return for this?
It is not a hardware fault, it is a restriction in the lens.
Most of the leading manufacturers have this as they use the same system in constructing the lens.
The only way is by having a software update.
The HTC HD & HD2 had it bad and although not entirely cured a software fix lowered a lot of the issue.
Samsung are aware of it and hopefully we should see some sort of 'makeup' to correct the problem.
As already mentioned the only time you will notice it is indoors on a plain light coloured wall.
When outside the sensor is not working so hard as there is a lot more light, as such it is then hardly if any noticed.
You can lower it yourself as a temporary step by going into the phones settings:-
Settings/Display/Background Effect/ and select Movie.
It dampens down the colours and as such washes out the strength of the pink.
Hate to say it, but restrictions in the lens are hardware. Hardware is essentially anything not software related and although software can mitigate or amplify hardware problems, the root cause is a physical characteristic beyond the 1s and 0s of the firmware.
Question is, what did you guys do about it? I had one device without the issue (but was returned due to screen problems) and now I have a new device with the issue.
I'm thinking about returning this one too, but am undecided. What do you guys say?
Samsung Galaxy S2 Pink Spot Camera
Hi guys,
I just bought SGS2 a week ago and replaced once. Unfortunately the problem is still there on current replaced phone. Isn't this too coincidence to get the replaced phone with the same problems? First thought was a hardware problem, but now it seems like some kind of software issue in SGS2?
I have browse around and found here. Felt undecided now like Quist, still thinking whether want to return it to shop or just keep it, or change it to other phone/brand.
Thanks!
Apparently this problem is resolved to an extent in the new KE7 firmware if the (unofficial) release notes are to be believed.

Hi amuneer,
I got my SGS2 set with latest preloaded KE7 version. Do you means I need to flash it using that unofficial KE7 version to solve the pink spot issue? I saw many SGS2 users who flash their phone with that version got a lot of problems. Sounds unstable to me.
KE7 didn't help at all for me.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
no improvements here either! same red circle with ke7
Hi guys, I'm going to get my SGS2 replacement for the 3rd times now, because i saw someone posted that he don't have pink spot on his SGS2 camera. Let see whether that was a coincidence received manufacturer defective set or really a hardware/software issue behind SGS2. Wish me Good Luck!
Update: Got my 3rd replacement SGS2 on my hand. The answer is all SGS2 100% having the same Pink Spot problem. No update, no news, and no solution yet. I think I will keep the phone and see what Samsung says...
On the phone I had that didn't have it, I went back and reviewed all the pics I kept in similar lighting situations and instead of a pink tint in the middle with a greenish tint towards the edges, it had a pinkish tint towards the edges and a green tint in the middle. I saw the same green spot phenomenon on one of the other units I planned to switch to.
Seems to me that the optics on the SGSII aren't all that hot and the white-balance algorithm uses an average across the whole screen, meaning that if there are any variations in the lens (highly likely) will give it a mottled green/pink appearance.
If anyone can confirm they have neither, it would be wonderful. Still trying to decide if I'm going to DOA my latest unit - have two more days to decide.

WiFi RMA

Has anyone sent their tablet in for weak WiFi, and when your tablet was returned was WiFi improved drastically? Dont flame unless you have no life. I don't know what to do?!
C10 model RMA
I sent my C10 model in for weak WiFi back in February. I received it mid-march, supposedly after the RMA facility received those "new parts". The packing slip said that the GPS and WiFi Foil was replaced, but it did absolutely nothing to improve my WiFi performance. Basically, I wasted a month without the tablet and got no improvement. I also never received a reply from either Gary Key or Hai Trat after two emails to both of them.
I wish you luck.

I did, and as for many nothing improved.
Check in this forum, you will read plenty of stories...
I did a BCOK serial (bought well before the GPS announcement) for weak wifi, no GPS, no screen display. It took about a week in TX to be repaired. Came back to me with new parts list, display is working again, wifi remained weak, and GPS still nothing... So if your only going to RMA it for weak wifi, then you are just wasting your time.
This is not what I wanted to read lol

They're right, every poster I've seen send the Prime in for repair has received it with no real changes to performance. However, some owners of newer serial number'ed Primes are reporting better performance so I can't really say. If WiFi is your one and only issue, then I would add GPS and WiFi/BT fallout to that and try for a downright refund/replacement and hope for a new serial without defects. That's me though.

After reading that I say to myself, WTF ASUS?
Its 50/50 with this thing, i'm "scared" to RMA. All i need is it to come back even worse. Yeah its cool they fixed the GPS(Dongle). But you cant sell a WiFi only tablet with ****TY WiFi.
I'm eventually going to RMA, I was waiting on Gary to give us some needed info but it seems like it all got brushed under the rug.

Downgrade/flash camera firmware

Hey Guys, trying to fix the green camera problem here, and I know 99% of people (who are most likely right) would tell me to RMA it to the destruction experts at Asus, but let's say there was reason to believe it wasn't the hardware rear camera piece with some degree of confidence. What I'm trying to do here is downgrade the camera firmware specifically. I was on .28, camera was on 0x9900 (I think, pretty sure not at home), do I downgraded via method, I'm back on HC yet camera firmware remains the same new version. Anyone know how to force a camera firmware flash/downgrade. I know it may very well be, and probably is a dead end but at this point my rear camera can't get any more broker. Thanks guys!

It's a question, so the Q&A section fits perfectly. :cyclops:
Yea, in my early morning stupor I posted it in the Galaxy S2 forums before it was moved. Any ideas guys? I don't even think the camera firmware is appropriate for the ROM I have installed...was going to try various official prime roms til they match but if I could figure out how to force/trigger the camera firmware flash it'd be IMMENSELY helpful.

Is the camera a common problem on the prime? I barely used mine but noticed since starting the CM10 nightlies that it stopped working. I only get a green & pink static display. I searched the relevant forum for a fix but found none. Is it likely the hardware?
VERY common problem. First thought to be a hardware problem I have reason to believe that A) The camera firmware is stored on the rear camera module (that is, if it were transplanted between 2 primes, one with HC and one with the latest .28 build, you'd see a camera firmware mismatch that follows the CAMERA, not the tablet) and B) I believe a seemingly good camera can behave badly either due to firmware mismatch between ROM and camera (that is, you update your tablet, but the camera rom update fails) OR, what I believe to be slightly more likely is that CERTAIN camera firmwares have this problem. What would be worse about this problem is that it would seem to have been CAUSED by Asus' updates, possibly as a result of updating the tablet but not the camera.
As of right now, I do not have enough proof to state the above definitively (but working on it). Here's what I know so far:
a) Downgrading to HC (8.8.3.33 I think) does NOT downgrade the camera firmware
b) I have discovered a command that I believe DOES update the firmware, yet it fails upon checking version numbers. See Below
# mv TF201-RS_M6Mo-0x9891.bin TF201-RS_M6Mo-0x9901.bin
mv TF201-RS_M6Mo-0x9891.bin TF201-RS_M6Mo-0x9901.bin
# /system/bin/isp_fw_update -isp
/system/bin/isp_fw_update -isp
Current camera isp version = TF201-0x9900
New camera isp ROM version = TF201-0x9891
Current camera isp version:TF201-0x9900
The camera isp ROM is older than current camera isp ROM
Exit camera isp FW update procedure
# PWD
PWD
PWD: not found
# pwd
pwd
/system/etc/firmware/camera
#
The first commands are me trying to fool the program by simply renaming the file, but you can see the result (this is on HC for WW ROM). Obviously I failed to fool it
There are more than a few tricks I mean to try. Ideally I'd like to decompile isp_fw_update so that it doesn't check version for downgrade. I've attached it here to see if anyone else can shed some light on the subject. I'm considering also hex-editing the camera firmware for the ROM (located in /system/etc/firmware/camera) that isp_fw_update looks at TO flash and editing the firmware number in the file. Wish me luck, and if anyone else can offer any help please jump in. I'll let you guys know what I find! (note, extract file from the zip, stupid xda uploader...)
EDIT: I HAVE SUCCESSFULLY DOWNGRADED THE FIRMWARE, YET PROBLEM REMAINS. I haven't given up yet though! Gonna try slowing working my way up the firmware flash trail again from here and see if I get lucky
Hope you can fix it. Me too got a green camera issue...

Please let us know if this works because I have the problem as well. I was going to RMA but wanted to see it the next firmware fixes it just in case it is a software issue plus I don't use the camera all that often. If not I'm going to RMA.
FYI - I had a great experiance when I had to RMA because all the blacks on my display turned red. They fixed that and turnaround time was less than 2 weeks.

Yea...regarding RMA, I've seen MORE than enough reports of both smashed, scratched primes as well as unnecessary motherboard replacements (which thanks to Asus' ****ty devs, breaks the unlock tool) to avoid that whole process. I've also heard of people having one thing fixed and another being broken. Honestly I can't bring myself to mail my tablet to those screw-ups having seen picture after picture of their "work". I'd do just about anything to get them to SELL me a working camera as I trust my own work 1000x more than the high-school drop-outs they've outsourced RMA to. Already e-mailed Tien asking if I could PURCHASE and PAY for a working camera module so I could fix it myself and he basically told me to screw myself. Awesome to know even when you're willing to work WITH a company to correct their mistakes they tell you to go to hell. Awesome.
Anyways, still trying my luck with firmware. Updated to .14, flashed camera firmware, still no luck Not finished trying yet though!
EDIT: Another good idea I have that I can't really try (at least not until parts start ending up on ebay) would be to swap in the camera for the TF700/TF300. I realize it might not work, but I figure the chances that it plugs into a standardized plug into the board is fairly high (high enough that I'd gamble on buying a camera module). As far as the firmware goes, there are a number of ways to go about handling that. I could easily unlock the device, never update from Asus again and it should never flash over the camera firmware. Another option would be to place the camera firmware for the TF700/300 in the same location as the normal firmware is in the TF201 and let it flash that file that way. I feel I've got a good enough handle on how firmware updating works (for the isp) that I can say with a good degree of confidence that would work.

First time I sent my Prime in for several issues, it came back with an unknown serial number (changed mobo for no reason), adhesive / scratching / denting on the device, wifi not fixed. Then I sent it again, still unable to unlock.
All the money they spent fixing my Prime, they could have just given me a new one. Replaced screen 2x, replaced mobo, replaced casing, replaced camera, replaced wifi modules...

That's good to hear. Physics would suggest that a larger device also acts as a better antenna.
I switched from the samsung infuse to this one and as far as I can tell the GPS on this is great that was one of my huge factors when I switched to this. All in all I have noticed it locks on within 5 to 15 seconds not to much longer and not once has it dropped on me even in the most remote of areas.

Sorry to bring this back up... I had no problems with GPS, but the last 2 weeks I have been having terrible issues. It is constantly getting off track when travelling in the car. Losing contact with GPS... especially right before I get to a major turn in the directions. Taking forever to relock. I did a full factory reset and that didn't help.
Anyone with any ideas? I sure do not want to have to pay for insurance replacement.
Perhaps atmospheric anomalies or problems with the GPS system itself ?
Lose GPS when connecting or disconnecting power
I have found that I lose GPS if I connect or disconnect power. This usually happens when I get into the car while playing Ingress and I reconnect the power. It is easy to overcome as I just turn off and on the GPS from the Notification Panel. It is obnoxious however. Can anyone else test to see if this is happening to them?

Sorry to bring this back up... I had no problems with GPS, but the last 2 weeks I have been having terrible issues. It is constantly getting off track when travelling in the car. Losing contact with GPS... especially right before I get to a major turn in the directions. Taking forever to relock. I did a full factory reset and that didn't help.
Anyone with any ideas? I sure do not want to have to pay for insurance replacement.

Hi, I have exactly same problem with my Mega. So why did you do to fix the problem?

At this point I have not solved the problem. I did find that clearing the cache will alleviate the problem for a short while but it comes back. I did a support chat with Samsung and that was the first thing they had me do. Also when I loaded the new firmware update, same thing since that cleared the cache too. Samsung said to call back after testing the cleared cache step but I have not gotten around to it yet. I did find that if you have the GPS die that just hitting the GPS off and on from the notification drawer will restart it, but you probably already knew that. Glad to know that I am not the only one experiencing this issue. I am holding out hope that this will be fixed with 4.3 whenever it comes out. Otherwise I will have to do something drastic.
I also find that if I am using my GPS and bluetooth for a period time while my phone is in it's case then the GPS dies. When I remove the phone from the case it is very warm and the GPS does not come back to life from restarting it, but give it a minute to, I assume, cool down out of the case then it starts working.

Do you have a custom rom loaded? From your sig it appears you have TWRP loaded and stuff. So are you having the same issue even thou you have a custom ROM loaded?

Well crap. That means that the problems we are having are not software related (unless it is a kernel issue). I was hoping/waiting for the KitKat update to see if that solved but now I don't have that much confidence it will.
Wait, my bad. This rom you have is a stock rom so it could still be a software issue. Oh well I guess I will still wait.

like you I expect the official kitkat and I would see...
I have i9205, stock 4.2.2. GPS is excellent. Locks on within a few seconds (very, very occasionally takes maybe 20 secs) & I've never lost sync.
Possible solution

So I have been reading on AT&T forums and the Note 3 had the same problem. I have even gone into the AT&T store and tried this, unplugging a Note 3 while it had a GPS lock, and it loses the GPS just like the Note 3. Well the Note 3's Kit Kat update came out and the people reporting the issue before are reporting no issue now with 4.4. So there is hope that Kit Kat will solve this one complaint I have with the Mega.
The GPS on the Sprint Mega sucks complete ass. Will never lock more than 1 out of at least 22 detected satellites. Note 3 is on top and Mega is on the bottom. I'm going to discontinue use of my Mega until Sprint and Samsung fix this garbage.

Colour blending (blacks) problem

Anyone else notice blacks don't blend properly? I first noticed it with the gradient in the infinity wallpaper. It persists in movies too. The blacks don't blend and look pixelated. I've contacted Samsung support by email.View attachment 4451283

Saw a thread on Android Central with quite a few people commenting about it (not sure if I'm allowed to link to a separate forum).

What resolution are you running at? I changed from the default to max resolution and no issues here.
Are you running at the lower resolution? If so, that may be why. Displays never look good at anything other then their default resolution, in this case WQHD+. That would explain the gradient issues you are seeing.
I have watched several videos on mine so far, and blacks, etc look great. No gradient or banding issues.
In fact, this display is much better than my Note 8. The color is more accurate, and there is no pink tinge at the top and bottom edges. There is also far less color shift when viewing at an angle.
Full resolution. WQHD+.

So today then...
Went down to my local Samsung Experience store, everything went fine in there. The rep took my phone out back and came back acknowledging a fault. She then explained that as its the S9+ Hybrid, they can't exchange in store. This can only be done by contacting customer services. The rep plugged the phone in to their system, ran diagnostics and created a support ticket for me to reference when calling.
So I dialled the UK based customer services. Explained the whole thing to them. They had issues pulling up the support ticket however took my details and went through the process, had been on the phone a good 20 minutes now already. The guy then told me I had to be put through to the online shop which is based in Manilla. Took about 5 minutes to get put through. The line was terrible, and it was a struggle communicating. Had to go through the whole lot again, another 15-20 minutes to be then told I had to be put through to their technical support! So I get put on hold and then...
*hung up tone* line went silent.
I was fuming. So had to start over. Back on to the UK number, quickly rushed through the whole thing again. She said that she would speak to Manilla herself first to explain, as for an exchange, I shouldn't be getting put through to technical support. Another 5 minutes of waiting for Manilla to pick up and I'm through again. Once again, rattled through the whole issue. End result:
I have to send back my device, which can take 3-5 working days to arrive. They then have to assess the device which will take another 3-5 days before they will send out the replacement.
I was not happy about this, as I've sent my old phone off to them as part of the pre-order deal already and I'll be without a phone for the duration. I also questioned why it has to be assessed when it's already been assessed in store. She just kept repeating the "procedure" over and over. I was getting frustrated and asked to speak to a manager as I felt that it was poor customer service. A manager came on but he repeated the same. They couldn't even explain to me, why I couldn't walk in to a Samsung store and get an exchange there and then. There was zero sympathy for a customer who'd spent nearly a grand on a phone, been a Samsung customer for years.
I've little choice now. I'm just annoyed that a huge company like Samsung won't go that extra mile for a customer. My phone is my business phone as well, I can't afford to be without it for up to 14 days. Spent over an hour on call to them as well. For a simple exchange. One whole hour for them to say, "stick the return label on, take it to DPD, we'll send you a replacement in 14 days".
Have been discussing this on Android Central as well, where there is a longer discussion with a lot of people experiencing the same issue. Whats irritated me is that one person there spoke to Samsung today and they're sending him out a replacement BEFORE he has to send his faulty one back. How is it different for two customers, yet same problem!?

This problem is called "Black Crush", and was one of the many problems I experienced with my Pixel 2 XL.
It can be fixed through software updates, and the problem is only visible at low brightness, and that's why most of the people haven't noticed it.
I will put this video for you, is about the Pixel 2 XL, but is about the same problem and also they suggest an app to minimize the issue:

I wouldn't bother. I can almost guarentee your new phone is going to come back and do the same, it's an issue that came about in Android 8.0. My Nexus 6P did the same after that update.

Thanks for this. Probably the most useful information I've found on the subject. The app is a good temporary fix until Samsung get an update out. The difference is immediarely noticeable.

I'm glad it helped, honestly, is just a matter of time for Samsung to fix this, because in theory it should be really easy to patch.
I have the same issue (S9+ Single SIM) and actually created another thread about this a week ago.
For people saying it's an Oreo problem, well my S8 got the official Oreo update and still doesn't have this issue.

Actually here in Dubai, the dual sim variant cost me around $950 thats for the 64gb, and this issue is so visible that i cant watch any movie with dark scenes.
I hate replacements as its not guaranteed to get a better display, and apart from this issue i really like the phone, so im really frustrated and dont know what to do but wait for a fix.

As I pointed out, you can install the app recommended in the video and try to improve it for yourself. A replacement won't do anything because is a matter of calibration, not the display itself.

I did try the app, it kind of solves the issue at the expense of contrast, better than nothing i guess. Lets wait and see what samy does.
Its kind of weird though, because otherwise the screen is flawless in my unit atleast, for the first time i got an Amoled screen with perfect white balance uniformity.
I think I have this issue as well. Last night while in bed I was watching a TV review on rtings and noticed what I thought was extreme video compression in one of their YouTube videos showing a test pattern. But then I looked at other images on the page and saw similar artifacting, compression or banding. This is very noticeable at low brightness. Even my gradient wallpaper from Samsung themes is showing tons of pixelation when transitioning to black toward the top at brightness below 40% or so. Do you guys see issues with these links below?
https://youtu.be/wg1tWXtH1zg (lots of smearing and compression here, looks horrible)
http://i.rtings.com/images/reviews/tv/sony/x900f/x900f-uniformity-local-dimming-large.jpg (I see a gray blob instead of a faint glow around the pattern)
My S7 edge never did this in over 2 years. It had a great display. I am not sure if my S9+ display is defective or if this a software issue. It seems like software but I am going to head to best buy and see if I can replicate it on another device. I am bummed I traded in my S7 and now can never get it back if this is a dealbreaker.
Is this the same issue you are experiencing?

This is a calibration issue, and I'm sure it will be addressed soon because many people are presenting this issue, and with many units I mean most of them.
Is only noticeable in low brightness as you pointed out, and that's why many people don't even know they have it.
I leave an image here taken from Android Central forum:
S9+ in top, S8+ in bottom.
:highfive:
Interesting. I just tested my S9+ alongside my coworker's S9 regular and his doesn't do this at all. Gradients and blends show up great with no crushing even at low brightness. Could this be isolated to this larger panel? I'm going to head to Best Buy today and see if I can replicate on their S9+.
