Wifi tether issue - Fascinate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Sorry to start a new wifi tethering thread but I couldn’t find any information on the issue I am having. I have tried to use open garden wifi tether from the market and it seems to work but when I go to stop it I get a error saying “unable to stop is you device rooted”. At this point it will not stop transmitting and I have to reboot my phone to get it to stop. I am running TSM res 2.1 with GeeWiz kernel 2.4.2. Does anyone have this issue and is this normal? I’m not sure if it has something to do with the kernel and rom I am using. I would like to get the wifi thering working and would appreciate any help you guys could give me or any suggestions on using a different wifi tethering app. I was looking at the android wifi tethering app but I’m not sure which version I should be using for my phone. Thanks in advance for the help.

Give barnacle wifi tether a try. I have had good luck with that tethering app. Wireless tether is another you could give a go at

Dualrom wifi tether problem

Ya I just recently downloaded dualrom, I noticed the first time that I flashed it there were a few extra settings to use, like wifi tether and USB tether. I noticed in dualrom 1.1 that the wifi tether gives me an error when trying to start it from settings. Is there any ideas how to fix this?

[Q] CM7 Thunderbolt Tethering not working

Hello XDA Developers,
I have an HTC thunderbolt, I'm running Cm7.1, the newest release that came out yesterday. My issue is that wifi or USB tethering do not work. Whether I connect usb tethering and enable the feature from the phone, or enable wifi tethering and connect through my laptop, the network connects, but then says no internet access and/or limited or no connectivity. My laptop connects to wifi internet fine.
I've had this problem for every iteration of CM7 for thunderbolt since June. Before moving to CM7, i remember trying tethering once or twice and it did not work. I've just decided now to try and get tethering working.
I've tried using the wi-fi tether app from code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list as well as barnacle wifi tether, both have the same problem.
My main questions would be:
1. Is there any reason I have overlooked as to why tethering does not work on my phone? Is there some new verizon block to tethering for root users? Are there any settings I could try to get this working?
2. Are there any known issues with CM7 and thunderbolt tethering?
3. It seems weird if it was a hardware issue since my laptop does actually connect to the phone, it just has no network connectivity.
Thanks!
I had a similar issue and fixed it by downloading the open garden wifi tethering app https://market.android.com/details?id=og.android.tether and changing the network to open on that app as well as the built in cm7 app. Then enable both apps and it should connect. Did for me.

Newest release came out about 20 minutes prior to your post CM7.1.1...check the rootz thread.
I've seen reports of this before. If memory recalls correctly, the devices weren't acquiring an IP correctly. Once you have it tethered, on the laptop/device try releasing and renewing your IP or disabling/enabling the adapter.
You are not the only person having this problem. I'm having this problem too and have not found a fix for it yet. I've found a pattern though, any ROM that I've loaded that was a build or based off of CM7, had the tethering problem. And as stated above, the problem about not acquiring and ip correctly is exactly what's happening.
Hopefully a dev or someone else can come along help resolve this problem. Apparently this problem is not very widespread as it seems that very few peeple have this problem.
Thank you everyone for your help.
keith.mcintyre26, I tried your suggestion of open garden wifi app, and it worked perfectly, just installed it and it worked. CM7 wifi tether still does not work though.

I tried the app as well and It didn't work I am in a tricky area when it comes to data coverage though so I can't help but think that might be it? Unrelated: Sometimes I lose data coverage altogether (drops out, comes back, drops out, etc) when I'm in 4G coverage areas. Maybe the two are related,

I know this is not the problem where I live as I'm in full signal.
I just got onto this ROM, after being on BAMF Forever, forever, and LOVE IT. My only complaint and possibly a show-stopper -- Wi-Fi Tether doesn't work, and neither does the built-in tether app.
I've done a complete wipe. The client connects, but doesn't DHCP.
Any ideas?

Quick update -- Open Garden works...
Strange... But I guess I'm all set
I had/have the same problem with cm7 and bamf1.86. I finally got cm7 tether last night using barnacle, but it was at .3 mbs. I have yet to top 1mbs. That was with 4g(or so it said.) I have tried the included wifi tether, usb tether, barnacle, and open garden. Nothing works properly on either rom. Signal was between -80 and at worst -90.

Seems to be a common issue across newer roms lately for wifi tether.
I got mine fixed by downloading the newest experimental build.
Once installed go into settings, Check Disable wake lock, check wifi driver reload, also check routing fix. Furthermore, make sure you select the proper device, should be the first option once you open settings.

4G WiFi Tether Infrastructure Mode Workaround

Credit goes to colestein on androidcentral for this. Figured id post it here since i haven't seen it anywhere here on XDA.
I'm using WiFi Tether 3.1 beta 6
Download the Data Enabler widget from the Market
Setup Wifi Tether as Nexus One, netd, mms clamping enabled
Use Data Enabler to shut off 3g
Start tethering
once tethering is started, enable 4g
You should have a consistent 4G signal and the benefits of infrastructure mode!
Has anyone tried this and gotten it to work? Im completely functional except my phone reboots once every 2 hrs or so...
I have 3 questions about wireless tether. Currently have it set up in infrastructure mode, and it is working great. I have wake lock on, not disabled because if the screen went to sleep, the connection would drop.
Wifi Tether profile is set up as Nexus One, netd enabled.
Here are my 3 questions.
1. When I enable wifi tether, the sprint tether icon appears in the taskbar. The software works, and I tether fine, but am I now registering tethering with the sprint network?
2. I do not have mms clamping enabled, What does it do, and should I have it enabled?
3. What does the enable routing fix option do?
This is working for me as well
Thanks!!
Sounds good, I look forward to testing this once I receive my Photon.
We have a similar fix like this for the Epic4G in that forum, but it's much more complicated and involves editing the framework.jar of the ROM.
Since 99% of tethering apps are filtered on the market for our phones, thanks to Sprint, a post to the file or an attachment of it would probably benefit the users of it in a greater capacity.
By the way folks, even though he isn't the creator of this workaround, the OP usually deserves a little thanks...
Worked for me in 3g. Very fast. I also get the tethering or mobile hotspot active (sprint mobile hotspot) but I just ignore it.
BTW, how is battery for most while plugged into the computer usb for charging while tethering. Mine can't keep up with the drain from the phone.
Does this only work for a ROOTED MoPho?

Yes. In order to use any tethering app, except the stock one, you need to be rooted.

Nope. you can use PDA-Net to tether an Non-Rooted phone via USB.
Woah! Awesome. Is PDA-Net an App or pls explain?
EDIT: NVM, found it. Can't believe the Market would allow such an App... thanks guys!!
Im using 3.0. I installed it. Then installed data enabler widget. Turned off 3g started 4g. Switched tether to nexus one/netd. Started tether. Should have error. Restarted tether. 4g infrastructure, Worked great. Figured it out this morning. No sprint popup in status bar either. Running netflix great through ps3.

Glad to see it's working for others as well! Sorry for not posting links. You can get WiFi Tether here:
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
There's a new version just released on 11/27/11, im gonna test it and see if it changes behavior in any way.
Data Enabler you can easily get from the market.
My phone still reboots every 2 or 3 hrs while tethering in infrastructure mode, not sure how to fix that

No, nowhere near as hot as my Evo used to get when i tethered it...
Mine reboots randomly too but its not a big deal.

My first reboot ever was with wifi tether. I've always used open garden before but it only supports ad hoc and never had a random reboot. I think it might be the app.

This should still work for you, just dont turn on 4G and keep 3G on...then use WiFi Tether with the indicated settings...

[Q] WiFi Tether & CM10 MDM05

anyone have any luck with CM10 mdm5 and Wifi tether? I've tried a lot of settings and re-installs of both app and ROM, but can't consistently get devices to see that there is tethering AP to connect to. If you have any insight, please let me know.
If not Wifi Tether, is there a better app out there?
Can anyone confirm that this combo is working well for them?

[Q] Need help getting wifi hotspot tethering to work

I am running Elegancia 6.2.0. I've been trying to get the wifi hotspot to work with no luck. I've done some searching and reading, and tried various suggestions, but nothing seems to help. I've tried using the built in app, as well as WIFI Tether Plus, but neither work. The built in app won't start it up, and WiFi Tether Plus starts up, but I can't see any available wifi network from it even though it appears to start successfully. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
