I am living with what I'll refer to as a successfully rooted NT...
Got 9.9.9 showing
installing a lot of apps - most work, some don't but that's due to no camera, bluetooth, etc. that I discover later
Now, as crazy as this may seem, I'm sure there are some of us out there who want to get our NT's as fully "droided up" as possible, and then, lo and behold, leave it alone. Just enjoy it (with all due credit to the devs who have made it possible!).
So, for the rest of us, can someone offer a "checklist" of any outstanding mods that should be done? I am not out here too much but what about this CM7 and/or CM9 I hear about? Will this represent the final frontier?
My goal in asking this question is to understand when I've reached a point where I no longer feel compelled to fiddle with my device, but also feel I've advanced it as far as technologically and functionally possible
once we get a fully working cm7 and cm9, the NT will essentially be a full android tablet.
cm9 is ice cream sandwich(android 4), cm7 is gingerbread(android 2.3)
final frontier? maybe but right now both are in alpha stage development -and it has come really far in the past 2 weeks since the bootloader was cracked/hacked/bypassed
Great! Now, the question becomes, will it be necessary to install CM7 to get to CM9, or will it be possible to go right to CM9 (which I am assuming is the better of the two choices).

When it's done. the main holdup on cm9 from reading the dev section is- sleep of death other than that essentially everything else works i believe. personally my guess is probably next week for an alpha release, but that is completely upto the people working on it.
no hardware video acceleration yet.
cm7 main holdup is wifi and sleep of death- again they fix those two items and -again- probably next week depending
Forgive my ignorance, but what is "sleep of death?" unless by that you mean bricking it. What would be the reason to go with CM7 if CM9 is apparently a more advanced version of android and is on a parallel development track?

1 Sleep of death is basically the inability to wake the nook from sleep mode. On stock nooks and working android devices the power button usually puts it to sleep. Right now CM on the nook puts it to sleep without allowing it to wake. It doesn't brick the device but it requires you to hard reset/reboot the device to make it usable again. When I say "hard reset," I mean in the traditional sense (holding a button sequence or cutting off power to FORCE a restart the device). I do NOT mean a "factory reset" that erases everything.
2 CM7 is already fully developed and released on other devices. In theory it should be far more stable and reliable than CM9, which is bleeding edge and unfinished in general. In other words, CM9 is practically guaranteed to have more bugs since it's got so much new stuff in it.

cm9 is a different kernel then cm7. What this means is not all apps will work on cm9. cm7 in theory should have better app compatibility, but cm9 should be better optimized for the NT.
As for sleep of death, I am pretty certain what it is, is every time the tablet goes to sleep. it dies.... why by now they have probably buried dozens of poor helpless NTs who never got a proper chance at life.... all in the name of progress. (ok sarcasm aside, SOD is simply you can't bring it back out of sleep. while I suppose you could simply disable sleep mode, doing so would badly hurt battery life, Also I believe they are trying to get bluetooth up and running as well for cm9)
So I hear you say cm7 = better app compatibility and cm9 = better optimized for the NT. In honor of super bowl season, sounds a bit like "great taste, less filling."
In other words, which would be the better choice between the two (assuming bugs have been worked out and both are stable)?
personal preference?
honestly, it'll be whichever you like best, with the way they have it setup to bypass the bootload in the nook tablet, you should be able to flash Either with the press of a button or two, try one for a week, try the other for a week, then decide which you like best.
you do have to remember cm7 is more for phones, which cm9 is more for tablets....
I agree with lenardo. The better of the two is the one that meets your needs. That said, I am more looking forward to CM9. I installed it on my phone a month ago and love it. It feels so much more polished. Not that I had any issues with CM7, but it just feels like "this is what Android should be." But beware ... once you start flashing and modding, it's quite addictive.

Thanks - based on your reply and what I was reading in a recent thread on choosing CM7 or CM9, I think I'll wait for 9 since I don't have the phone , only the NT.
I assume there will be some big announcement and posting along with step by step installation instructions?

announcement is likely, step by step instructions will most likely involve using cwm to install. So if you haven't already installed it, install cwm now so you will be ready
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1458630
as for cm9 vs cm7 as the others have stated most people are waiting for cm9. I will most certainly give both a try. unless there is an app that I can't live without that just won't run on cm9, I will probably be using it. If I find I can't use certain apps with cm9, then I will be moving to cm7. However I will give both a try. there is little point in making a decision with only looking at one side of the choice.

Yes. to explain what the recovery flasher app does. it installs clockworkmod (cwm) or the nook stock recovery. the stock recovery is what you would use to fix your nook if you really screw it up somehow. you can access it by holding the power and nook buttons at the same time while booting up. (i.e. the power is off, turn it on with both the n button and the power button, holding them until it gives you the option to restore stock firmware).
Clockwork mod would replace this. If you use the recovery flasher to flash cwm, then instead of the option to reset the device to factory settings, holding the power button + n button on bootup will get you into the CWM menu. cmw can be used for several things. It can backup your firmware so you can restore things if you screw up. (i.e. backup your rooted firmware, so resetting isn't unrooting anymore) or it can flash zip files to modify your existing firmware. you would be using the flash zip files function to flash the cm9 or cm7 firmware once they are done.
There isn't much atm that you can do with cwm other then backup your current firmware in case you screw something up, however I would suggest doing so. it's always good to have an easy way to fix things if you screw it up somehow playing around makes it easy.
The flasher apk will also allow you to flash back to the default barnes and noble recovery if you wanted to get rid of cwm for some reason I can't think of.
EDIT: you can also download "Quickboot" from the google market to get to the recovery menu without rebooting and holding the n button + power button.
Also useful to know. controls in CWM: + and - buttons will move between options. n button will select whatever you are on, and the back button is the power button.
To piggyback on the reply above there really isn't any need for quick boot as Indirect's App ALSO allows to "reboot recovery" from within the app.
As the system would need to be running in order you use this, there really isn't any need for both app's strictly to get to recovery.
The advantage of Quick Boot is that it also offers you the option to "reboot" the device which I believe is currently only possible by turning it off and then back on. Not a big deal but it will save an extra step.
The disadvantage of Quick Boot is that it will also provide you with the option to boot into the bootloader. DON"T click that.

My dad just got my mom this Tablet, I dont want to mess with it to much, so no custom roms. All I want to do is give her access to the android market. I have read tons of posts and they all start with open the market then close the market, but I dont have the market. Is there an APK to download to install the market then do the "clear cache till I get an error" fix. Or is the only way to get the market is to install a custom rom that already has the market. Please any help would be greatly appreciated.
Just flash a custom rom and make it run 10 times faster and more stable. The whole process will take less than 20 minutes if you follow my instructions down to the letter.
http://viewsonic-gtablet-for-dummies.webs.com/starthere.htm
You're either a code green or yellow. Take your pick.
I'm serious about it. The stock rom is really not that great. If you want to maximize the user experience for your mom, flash her a custom froyo rom. I like the calkulin+clemsyn combo the most. Make sure you pay attention to which branch of development you're on.
Ya, I was afraid that was going to be the response. I actually have been on your site for dummies. I am not new to android as I have a Motorola Atrix and have done my share of modding on it, but am nervous about screwing up my moms new present and never hearing the end of it. Gues I might just have to bite the bullet and get it done.
Go on and do it...

That said, I went to goodintentions website, followed the instructions, and wala, I have a custom ROM, running at blazing speed and could not be happier.

I'd give it a shot.
And don't forget to make a donation to goodintentions...

Goodluck modding the tablet. I put a custom rom on my fathers tablet. Boy did he yell at me as i was halfway through but then he used it that night, called me up and said "holy **** what did you do?" Quite funny in the moment.

Another vote for Calkulin+Clemsyn 1.5ghz Froyo Combo V6 BL1.2
It's been perfectly solid and stable for me. Your mom shouldn't have any troubles for the foreseeable future.
The good thing is, it's essentially unbrickable, so there's always a way to back out. I assume that she's been using her Tablet since getting it, so she may be used to the UI of stock Tapntap...
That being said, if you flash a rom (another +1 here for Calk+Clem combo 1.6 for bootloader 1.2) and she doesn't like it, you can always take it right back to stock for her. I highly doubt that she'll hate the custom rom, though. She'll have full market access, speed WITH battery management, stockish settings menus, A way to backup the system OS (through CWM) , and basically just a whole new experience that is far superior to stock...
NOW, I'm sure you know, but make sure to backup whatever apps she's already got prior to flashing the new rom...
but, yeah...flash a new rom, let her use it for a few days, THEN ask her which she liked better...
All right, got the new rom and have been playing with and I am quite happy. She only had it for a day or two so I she still was getting use to it. That is why I did it right now before she got to attached to the stock rom. Not seeing the full market but need to do the clear cache and force close thing and see if it will work. I noticed several apps that I wanted to install were not showing up.

In theory, you will never ever have "full" market. Google market is set up so that certain device only gets certain apps. It is impossible for any one device to have access to all apps. Don't ask me why google does this.
My "girlfriend" just bought the transformer. I've been playing with it. Right away, I noticed that the market for the transformer is missing a whole bunch of apps.
That said, if you want more market access, go to the following link and read.

Ya, I actually started on goodintentions site "code green" and did each in order so I should have covered everything. I also did the market fix and I am able to find alot more apps now. I know you will never see everything, but there is alot more apps showing after the clear cache, force close fix.
First of all I would like to apologize if you have heard these questions a thousand times before, but I have done a fair amount of reading and haven't gotten enough concrete answers to be confident enough to continue.
I just got up the courage to root my Fascinate after over a year of having it by following droidstyle's excellent guide. It was very painless and worked first shot, so no worries there. Now I'm at the point of what to do next... I have already frozen the bloatware and looked into some 'root-friendly' apps but I'm not sure where to go from here. I think I've decided I want to get the most out of this thing as I'm not due for an upgrade for (what seems like) a long time. I'm under the impression that installing a good ICS rom is the way to go but I just have a few noob questions before I continue.
1) From what I have been reading Glitched AOKP ICS is the best rom to use currently on the Fascinate, correct? Also quick question, regarding the link to download it... is the current version the build 34 one or the milestone 5 one at the top?
2) Rooting my phone initially didn't erase any of my apps or data. What will installing an ICS rom erase, if anything? I will make backups of course, but I'm just wondering what to expect. Will the 'bloatware' apps still be there or will installing ICS install new system apps?
3) What market apps should I consider 'must haves' to tweak stuff? I already bought setcpu but haven't invested in anything else yet.
4) I plan to follow section 4 of droidstyle's guide but need clarification... even though I have rooted stock 2.3, I should still follow all steps right?
Thank you for listening to my noob questions and thanks to anyone who can offer advice. I have been building and working on computers for years but this cell phone hacking stuff is all new to me (obviously).

1) M5 is newest. Get glitched build off of the exynos server.
2) Complete wipe. A desktop equivalent would be formatting your hard drive with Windows Vista installed and doing a fresh install of windows 7.
Backup all data and contacts locally or on the cloud. Do NOT use Verizon to backup your contact data. Use Google or a local backup instead.
No bloatware will be present since custom roms do not come from the carrier.
3) NSTools. Maybe Root Explorer or wi-fi tether for google
4) Just follow the guide. Rooting doesn't have much to do with recovery and intalling ics and such.
Not to knock ICS, because I love AOKP, but you could also consider working your way there over time. I had a lot of fun playing with different Touchwiz ROMs like SC3 and TSM Res. You may even find one along the way that you want to stick with for a while. At the very least, you'll learn to get where a complete data wipe doesn't even slow you down.
There's so much good stuff still available for this phone. My phone is sheer perfections right now, but I still have plans to try out GeeWiz and MIUI.
Everyone knows the current destination is Glitched AOKP, but the fun is in the journey.
I agree. I would download everything rom, kernel, and app you can find for the phone between here and rootzwiki, just in case links go dead. Tsm res and awesome sauce are two very good roms that I had a ton of fun with. They are more forgiving to the new user as far as making mistakes goes. Couple of things to know before you continue are that you can use the three finger method to get into recovery on touchwiz roms but not the ics roms(must enter recovery through power off menu). You also cant just flash back and forth from touchwiz roms and cm7 or ics roms, as you have to follow certain steps

Well I was planning on jumping right into ICS as it looks amazing and I don't think I want to wait... however I wouldn't be opposed to the idea of trying different roms later on down the road. Is it going to be a pain to go backwards from ICS, or just flash like usual? Also, to those that have tried most of the 'good' roms, what would you consider your top 3 non-ICS?
Also on the subject of backing up my apps... I have been using Mybackup as it seems the most simplistic to use and reliable. Will my apps be exactly as they were when I backed them up (after switching to ICS) or is it just better to re-download what I need and configure them again?
I hate to spam some more questions but I figure since I already am... just a few more...
I haven't really messed with Setcpu that much, but is it bad to have it at 100/1000 or should I keep the max lower than that? And last one... what's the best wifi tether to use so Verizon won't send their goons after me? Is the USB tether from clockwork mod any good?
Thanks to all of you for your input. I think I'll be attempting to flash to ICS tomorrow night and hopefully all goes well.
You can go from touchwiz roms to isc roms by flashing but you need to do a lot more using the computer to go backwards. It will make more sense once you have a better understanding. Use titanium backup to backup your apps. If you really dont have any then just redownload them. If you are on the touchwiz roms you can use setcpu, but for ics roms you are going to be using an app called nstools or from control (built into settings section of rom). Again, more of this will make sense later down the road that is why I figured it would be better to start on a from like tsm Res or awesome sauslce

Well I'm still on the fence here on what to do. I really want to run ICS but with all the little glitches I've read about I think maybe I'll try some of the better GB roms first... I think TSM Res looks top for me with the features, but I might try more than just 1. I've heard not to restore data backups when going ICS... does this apply to GB roms as well? Should I also switch the radio or is what I have the same as the GB one? Thanks

That is a nightly and has a minor bug where apps on SD card force close. No biggie for more experienced users who know its a nightly and can deal. Nightlies are bleeding edge releases and as such can contain a bug or two. Milestones are stable releases to be used as a reliable daily driver if one is needed (some do). I recommend the m5 release since it is a milestone and you are new to this. I also want to see you have the best experience possible.

I'm in a similar spot. I put CM7 on my wife's phone a while ago, but she has downloaded so much crap on it it's running like garbage and crashing.
Does the AOKP M5 have any bugs I should be aware of? As long as it's working well and everything is working (WiFi, Camera, MMS, etc), she'll be fine with it as a daily driver.
Two other questions I have.
Where can I get the correct glitchy Kernel?
Do I just need to download the ROM and kernel, wipe data/cache, then flash the ROM then kernel, then gapps (in that order) in Clockwork Recovery? Anything else?
She really likes the ICS stuff I've been showing her on my Rezound, especially the speech to text typing.
Thanks for your feedback.

QFT.
Get the Glitched build as it has fixes, extra available RAM, and much more not available in the AOKP official build.
Wifi, cam, and MMS all work fine. I can't honestly think of anything not working off the top of my head. NovaLauncher (Regular is free, Prime is $4 and well worth it for gestures) is recommended at this point since Apex has gotten a little slow.
Radio is recommended to be EH03 though I think ec09 and anything newer than eh03 work fine. I am running EH03 and no complaints.
I think I remember reading something about torch not working in ICS... is that the type of app that turns on the LED? Believe it or not I use that a lot and it would be a pain if it didn't work when I switch.
Also, is there any way to check what radio you're currently using before flashing? Tried looking that up but couldn't find it
Ah yes...torch doesn't work but you can use the tiny flashlight app to turn on the flash and achieve the same functionality.

The Tiny Flashlight + LED app? That's actually what I'm using now and if that works then I'm all set... I thought when people said 'torch' they just meant any app that turns on the LED
I flashed and ran into 1 problem. I had to flash Team Hacksungs Build 2 ROM first. Flashing glitched put me in an endless boot. Then I couldn't boot to recovery. I really was flipping out.
I had to Odin a new recovery in, wipe, then flash Team Hacksungs Build 2 ROM. For some reason, it booted into AOKP (?) then. I went back to recovery, wiped, reflashed AOKP and got it working.
I haven't searched yet, but anyone know where I can change the boot screen? It's really not a "wife friendly" boot screen.
As I understand it, torch refers to the built in flashlight feature in aokp called torch. Tiny flashlight plus the widget give similar functionality.

ok so ive tried to read everything i can and ive got my head pretty much around it but a few more direct inputs would help.
i went from cm7 to cm9 and a few cm10 on my wife nook. she doesnt like them they seem unstable for the amount she uses it. reboot or locked up about once an hour as she was reading with nook for andriod or running an audio book player.i also went from cmw5. to cmwv6.0.1.5. so with the new cmw6. you cant flash cm7 roms. it looks like people have had luck by holding Power + N and restart till 8 times but that puts it back to stock is my understanding. would like to know if that is correct i would need to reroot it then. next way ive been looking at is [RECOVERY + HOW-TO] NEW/OLD ClockworkMod/TWRP/Stock Recoveries for 8GB/16GB NT page but im confused on what ones to use. i want to go to cm7 but i dont think the cm7 flash will work since my cmw is at v6. ok guys i know that was alot but ya help would be great. so again i just want to go back to cm7 and would like some help getting there.
I have done this. I wanted to try cm10 and flashed cwm 6 but it was too unstable. All you have to do is flash the cwm for cm7 like you did for going to cwm6. Then flash the rom and gapps again and Voila

What specifically was bothering your wife? The CM10 ROMs have matured very quickly in the last month or so, and the devs are slaying bugs right and left. It's possible that something as simple as tweaking a few settings could get her Nook back to running stably on a CM10 ROM, with much less work done...
Regardless, if you want to roll back, I'd suggest installing TWRP 2.x, which works for both CM7, and CM9/10 ROMs (as long as you haven't flashed the 5-touchpoint firmware update). There's a detailed thread in the Dev section by Lavero.Burgos with instructions here.
i tried 3 copies of cm10 and 1 copy of cm9 it would deep sleep or reboot comstantly im talking 2-3 time an hour while she was using nook for andriod or smart audiobook player. cm7 ran these without a problem so going back untill cm10 get a bit better. thanks for the info on twrp though
Is the battery draining down under 10%? I was having problems with CM10 with low battery but if keep it charged haven't had any reboot problems. I'm on not on the 5 touch ROM.

Ahh... The random reboots seem to have been pretty well killed now. If you're still interested in staying with CM10, take a look at Demetri's SGT7+CherryPicks ROM in the dev section. I've been running that for over a month now with that with no problems.

Running with the 06-11 version of the above ROM, I haven't had any issues with deep sleep with the CPU governor set to 'on demand'. Right now, it shows 4 1/2 hours on battery, and still holding at 89%. Part of that time it was running "Heroes Call" which is a HUGE battery hog.
Saludos,
Steve
Ok, so I know this may be stating the obvious, but just in case.....did you go into cyanogen mod and set up the display so it does not time out after one hour? A casual user could mistake the tablet going to sleep as a shut down (my mom did this)! Hitting the N button does not bring back the display during sleep, you have to hit the power button.
At least with my mom, a very casual user, the problem usually has an obvious answer that has to do with the user, not the tablet!

yeah shes happy atm with it just rooted with b&n and a go launcher over top. Not even running cm7 and shes happy some im happy. It didnt matter on the battery lvl. Its my wife and my main thing is i dont want to mess with it at all if i dont have to, spending the few days trying different version about cause a big D. well maybe not that far but wasnt good times in my house. thanks to everyone for inputs.
I recently flashed my Samsung Fascinate with PowerWashed Team's PWGB Version 2.0 (Beta 3). I'm terribly new to using custom ROMs, but I'm quite pleased with the results. I've only had one concern with this ROM regarding the back light on the soft keys. They light up every time I touch my screen or press a hard key.
I've attempted to find a setting for this in the OS and in CwM Voodoo Lagfix Recovery v2.5.1.x screen, but wasn't able to find such a setting (Again, I'm very green so it could be right under my nose and I simply don't know it.)
I also attempted to install myriad apps to keep the back light off on screen touch including:
Screen Filter (No effect)
Night Mode (No effect)
Light Flow Lite - LED Control (No effect)
Light Manager - LED Settings (This app actually stops the back light from coming on, however it's unpredictable and works >15% of the time)
I've also done a lot of searching on the matter. I've seen where others have stated the problem, but none where there was a solution or enough information for me to further investigate a way to fix this. It's also been complicated to find information due to a variety of search terms (soft keys, led, etc.) yielding results about the camera or other things that are unrelated to my issue coupled with my lack of direct knowledge on the matter.
I'd really appreciate any advice on either directly fixing this or a source of information so I may learn more from what is causing this behavior and fixing it myself. Thanks, everyone for all the time and effort you've put in for making things like this accessible to individuals like me. I can't tell you how much I appreciate it.
This behavior is a product of the kernel, and most people find it desirable. If you install the kernel control app nstools, you should see an option called cmled timeout, allowing you to set the led backlight timeout.

Thanks for the information! Unfortunately, the ROM I flashed has a stock kernel and doesn't offer this option. So, I suppose that's the first thing I need to address, but now I know where the problem lies! Thank you so much for your time and input, I'll put it to good use.
Are you saying the back lights light up even if you just touch the screen? That's strange, they only have ever lit up for me when I actually touch a soft key or hit the power button to wake the phone up.
Well good luck, I'm not sure what kernel is best for GB as I started flashing custom roms during ICS and I'm now on Jelly Bean and never going backwards.

Yes, exactly this. It is really odd and very bothersome when trying to read at night. Even if I use the volume rocker to turn the page the lights will come on. It's maddening. I'm currently looking at the kgb kernel, but I think the nstools led option isn't actually going to address this quirk. (Directly, I believe I will end up disabling the led altogether)
If you don't mind, what rom did you choose?(Ignore, I was on mobile and did not see your signature at the time)
How has the performance been? I'm interested in doing the same, but was afraid my fascinate wouldn't handle jb very well.
Well needless to say it's different for everybody when it comes to roms, sometimes your phone will have no problem running a certain rom where as someone else's might not even boot. As for myself I've been pretty fortunate and have been able to try any rom I've wanted to with success, and I'll give you a few of my thoughts on it.
If you're wondering about performance, well simply put JB blows everything else away and runs like a dream on the Fascinate. Once you spend a few days with it you'll never want to go back honestly. Even on our aging hardware, it runs amazingly fast, even without kernel performance tweaks.
Anyway, as far as roms go, if you're most concerned with stability and reliability then I would highly suggest CM10 (whatever the latest nightly version is). Of all the roms I've tried, it's by far the one that's given me the least hassle. That said, I'm quite fond of the tweaks offered in AOKP, mainly the voltage settings (for battery life) and the fact that it seems to vibe much better with Devil kernel than CM10 does. I've been running my current rom/kernel for a couple of weeks now, and I'm happy enough with how it's running to keep it as my daily driver for a while.
This isn't to say the GB roms aren't any good, because of course they are, but considering how nice JB roms run on our phone you'd be doing a disservice by not at least giving them a shot.

You sold me on the idea of JB. Flashed it today, and I love it so far. Plus, my soft key lights aren't constantly on! Win-win.
Thank you so much for the guidance. Your input helped turn a satisfactory experience with ROMs into a trully positive one.
Glad to hear you liked it man, I was reluctant at first too due to (at the time) no 'official' releases, but I'm glad I made the jump. I'm quite enjoying AOKP M1 and will probably stay on it for a long time. Which rom did you end up trying?

I was really impressed with your review, so I chose to go with the same rom. It also seemed like the most stable option and easiest for me to understand the installation procedure (very important for me since this is my only device and more than just my daily driver, it's my life line). I had been extremely hesitant to go to JB for fear of junking my phone up, but I'm really glad I took the extra risk. I just needed an extra bit of encouragement. Thanks again for all your input!
If you managed to install AOKP smoothly you can pretty much install any rom the same way, basically meaning wipe data and cache/davlik then flash whatever you want to. Luckily this phone happens to be very hard to break, and you'd have to do something pretty extreme to brick it. I highly recommend Titanium backup pro so you can just backup the apps you want, and restore them in no time when you're trying different roms. Also, I've been using some voltage settings that make battery life insanely good, so if you're interested in doing that let me know and I'll post them.

Regarding the key back light, since you are on aokp jellybean now if you still want to tweak the settings, goto settings and then device settings. There you can adjust the timeout on them

I've actually done that before just to see what happened (system settings) and it didn't bootloop, it simply didn't restore anything. Not that I mind re-setting everything after a clean install, just figured I'd try to save a little time

I (rather, my 8-year-old daughter) have a had a Viewsonic G Tablet for a while, and would like to install a new ROM in it, in part because I suspect that the tablet may have been infested by malware. My goals are to be able to root the tablet, and to have full access to the Google market place (Google Play Store, as I believe it is called now.) After doing some reading on how to tackle this, I have noticed that, if anything, there is an excess of information, potential dependencies on the software version currently in the tablet - and many ways in which one can end up with a brick.
I would be grateful for recommendations on how to proceed. In particular, what is the ROM that members in this forum would recommend for me to use? I would like to minimize the probability to end up with a brick, which would seem to imply that relative installation simplicity is a factor. Also, do I need to reset to factory default before attempting to install a new ROM? Would this be advisable, or may be even necessary, in order to make sure to get rid of any malware potentially in place? The tablet is currently running the latest software update (1.2-5699) from Viewsonic, installed shortly after 01/31/12.

I forgot to add two other desirable features: The ROM should support Skype with video, and should be optimized for video and game playing; that's what my daughter uses it for.
I doubt you have malware that couldn't be easily removed. But rooting/romming will make the device far more useful.
That sai, for best stability and compatibility, I would suggest a Froyo rom, as the other kernels aren't quite there. Particularly for Skype and such. VeganTab is the best one I have seen, but I also like Beasty Clemsyn, and that is what I am using today.
If you want to tinker more, the new Smoother jb/ics are great, but not perfect. I plan to get back to those in the near future, as they are still being tweaked.

Thanks so much for your recommendations. I have been looking into the description given in
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=865245
for installing a new ROM. Do you know if this is up to date? I am a bit concerned about the comments in the link for VeganTab having to do with incompatibilities between the bootloader in recent versions of the Viewsonic ROM and the bootloader mentioned in the link above. I just need some reassurance from those who know better that, by following the steps in the link, I am not going to brick the tablet.
I haven't heard of anyone really bricking the tablet. Some roms have caused an SOD (sleep of death) but after the battery dies out, it resets and can be booted back up. Or you can press the internal reset button. Most of these happen on the reverse engineered kernel for newer roms.
Get yourself comfortable with the nvflash routine (it's pretty easy) and keep a backup original rom on your computer, in case you need it. Nvflash can get you out of pretty much any issue.
VeganTab is very old as you can see. If you're on the same bootloader as required for that, then go ahead. If not, then you're probably on 1.2,which is why I switched to Beasty / Clemsyn (it's 1.2bl capable iirc).
