I'd like the option... for battery life and signal issues. Probably the only thing I don't like about the atrix. Hopefully someone can come up with a mod, or if there's one out there fill me in?

There already was in Froyo. Settings>Wireless and Network>Mobile Network>Select Network
If you want it more accessible, you can download Extended Controls from the Market and use a widget. One of the possible toggles is 2g>3g>4g toggle.

And you can't toggle 3G and 4G on GSM carriers... it's basically the same thing. Same signal used for 3G is now our "4G"

Just found this, figured it would help
1)Go to dialer
2)Dial *#*#4636#*#*
3)Select Phone Information
4)Scroll down and change preferred network type from "GSM auto (PRL)" to "GSM only"
To change back, just change the setting back to the GSM Audo. Bit of a PITA compared to Froyo, but it works as far as I can tell.

I am always on wifi so I don't need LTE, 4G, HSPA or 3G.... is there any way I can force 2G or edge only on an AT&T locked Galaxy Note i717? I've looked all over the forums and people say go into the menu and select that option, but it doesn't work. Same with apps, don't work. I've read flashing a different modem will enable that option to work, but won't I need an unlocked phone to do so?

Well like I said I'm on wifi all day and don't need LTE killing my battery for no reason. And, so I can still send or receive pictures.
LTE/Data is automatically disabled when you connect to wifi. No need to do anything. It will turn itself on automatically to receive/send mms.

Im guess the op really meant to say how to turn it off when not using wifi?
otherwise, like you guys mentioned, it turns off automatcially when wifi connects
and 2G still exists?

So by forcing 2G I'm not going to see any battery improvement since it's automatically turned off since I'm always on wifi?

That is Apple's "innovation" for you right there. This is Android. Android turns off cellular data when on wifi and only turns it on when needed for MMS.
You notice how when on wifi you don't see a 4g icon? Send an mms and you will see it pop up long enough for the message to be sent and then disappear.
That is your phone automatically enabling/disabling cellular data when needed/not needed.
Ok, well to get this back on track I'd like to force 2G or even 3G no matter what. Any solution for me?
Dial *#*#4636#*#* and hit phone information. Scroll down and in the drop down list and choose GSM Only. Reboot.

Nope. Even on wifi, say If you're sending or receiving MMS it will use your data (4G or LTE). Also, unless you have it turned on while the phone is asleep, your phone will switch back to 4G for downloading or synchronize data. 2G takes longer to download information because of he slower speed which causes the phone to drain battery because the phone would still be downloading the data.
-Once you go NOTE, you'd say 4 inches a Joke
-iOS = inspiring Outdated Software

The modem is restricted so you can't change the bands. It's set to switch to the best signal.
The idea of using 2G to save battery consumption is a wives tale. There isn't any difference anymore.
I would hope that's the only reason to want to switch to 2G!
But yeah, with current technology 3G/4G is no longer a battery killer like it once was. Especially on our state of the art awesome Galaxy Notes!
I do not agree with this entirely, because at college I only get 2g all the time! ANd my battery never gets below 75% when I am home it bounces from 3g/4g and even sometimes to 2g I live in a weird area lol...And my battery gets down to 30-35% when I am home doing the same things.....
The modem in the phone is on or off, and it doesn't downshift if it has to run on a lower band. It's like a light bulb -- on or off.
Don't take my word for it, google the topic and you can read what the engineers say.
You can't do the same things with 2G and 4G networks (at least not without pulling your hair out).
I must disagree with you, 2G and 4G switch is available in international GNote. So there is a way to swtch it. And if i am in zone of low 3/4G signal zone, it always switch to 2-3-4 G, so it also make the battery drain faster. In HOX AT&T there is a command you can dial some code and get into menu for switching Bands. There should be somthing like this in Note also.
There is a dial code for this modem but it is a restricted menu. You can't make a selection on it.

To get the option, you would need Samsung modem software and be able to edit the file and unrestrict the band selector. That is something that has never been leaked, unfortunately.
