Hi all,
So this is just to help noobs and similar with what I tried so that I got the CM9 port by lupohirp to work. As you know the CM9 thread is devs/geeks only and not quite intended for feedback and discussion. The same applies to the new KANG thread
P.S. Lupohirp, this is just to help you and not to take away any of your credit!!
A brief background so that those with similar situations can relate and not ask too many questions. I asked all that I needed so I don't think you should have more. And if you do, I am unable to answer most of those.
So here goes:
- I first had stock Froyo
- Then Rooted with z4root and got ClockworkMod and so on
- then put on CM7 by mik_os which works with old baseband only.
(baseband is the bit that allows your phone to talk to a cellular network)
So the baseband story once again after the hundreds of posts on it. Froyo (2.2.x) from LG has the old baseband. Those LG phones that got upgraded to factory gingerbread (2.3.x) were also upgraded to the new baseband. However coming to custom ROMs the story is different. Some work with the old e.g. mik_os CM7 and some work with new e.g. official CM7 by adfad666 and unofficial CM9 by lupohirp.
That means, since I had Froyo and then moved to mik_os CM7, I still have old baseband.
- moving to today, I wanted a new ROM and got excited by the CM7 and CM9 ports. Both said they want new baseband.
Two ways of going about this:
1. Upgrade to new baseband via the various ways (KDZ, etc) which seems to be a bit scary from the instructions though it might not be!
2. Get old baseband to work with the new ROMs. This is possible based on what I read here. The file is available here under the Old Baseband paragraph.
So I decided to go with Option 2 since, baseband can be upgraded/downgraded irrespective of the ROM. The difference will always be that only one will work by default and the other one is a patch away.
So now,
- I got the zip file for the cm9 beta from that thread
- I got appropriate gapps (ics version not gb) - http://goo-inside.me/gapps
- I got the old baseband fix from the baseband link in Option 2 above.
- I put the gapps and the cm9 zip in the root of the sdcard for ease of access
Now using ClockworkMod 5.0.2.0 (remember 5.0.2.0 is for old (and probably new) baseband and 5.0.2.7 is for new)
- wiped /cache, /data, /system, /sd-ext
- left /boot as is. This is of utmost importance. You wipe this, you're on your own (ok not so bad but if you do, do not RESET your phone, learn how to get it back and then fix it)
- and /sdcard contains the new files so do not wipe it
So then the usual route, flash the zip after selecting it. obviously CM9 first. Then the gapps file. You can do the gapps file after a restart as well.
Now everything should be ok except your cell signal. That should be dull/inactive, etc. If you go phone status it will also not have much there.
So now get the old baseband fix files. extract to a folder of choice. adb push these three files to /system/lib/ (I just learnt that you should have 2MB free in /system AFTER the copying)
P.S. adfad666 has advised against doing this because of a risk of corruption. I don't know why, I couldn't get them in any other way so I took the risk since the fix is just a recovery away, so if you do this its your own risk
I then rebooted the phone and all was well.
Tested 2G and 3G and data as well. I didn't see whether it did HSDPA or not. The SIM also had all the APNs etc ready. SMS is good too!
Thread Summary
So this here is a companion thread (hopefully) to the main dev thread. Its for people not reporting bugs but closer to how something is done. Those doing patches and stuff still go to the main thread. There is another companion thread here as well which I had not seen.
A brief summary of what has happened so far:
- lupohirp has compiled ICS for our beloved Optimus One P500s from CM9 source code. It comes with Apex Launcher as of the latest beta.
- there is active work going on and people complain about things here and there and provide great feedback.
- this thread was started for noobs trying to get old baseband to work (Many thanks to aspee's thread here for the baseband info!) with the CM9 port but I felt like helping out more so I am explaining what I know.
- some alternate kernels have been compiled whose links are further down this post.
- somewhere along the line CM team has decided that we can get official CM9 subject to some coding practices being fulfilled

FAQ
Why did lupohirp take this on?
Because he is awesome.
Is it for everyone?
No, but you can have it.
What baseband?
Any, new works out of the 'box'. Old has instructions above.
What is KGSL?
I have no idea yet.
Why does this port use the 2.6.35 kernel instead of 3.0.x.x
I still don't know.
Can someone improve the answers above?

Overclockin works, camera wont work even if u use a 3rd party app since the basic problem lies in the software(the ROM)... the system cant connect to camera...

SMSing will work when you copy the file libwms.so to /system/lib as well. Get that file from the A8 rom (in /system/lib).

What I know does not work so far in my experience:
- WiFi status bar indicator is dull although the connection is fine
- Camera does not work with standard Camera app and Camera ZOOM FX
- Link2SD is unable to create mount scripts no matter the partition file system so its a bit of a pain now to install apps
All the above are known issues.

Link2SD very much works with ext2 partition, using it from ALPHA3,working well with latest FRANCO_3.0 kernel too!

Old baseband fix
The old baseband fix does not work, I copied the files from the zip folder over but my phone still has no network, can anybody help me?
Kernels has nothing to do with mobile data...and I'm glad someone has said something about this thread,I imagine OP faces same problem as me ? T-Mobile USA,I'd assume ? You go to flash new baseband (v20g) than flash cm9..you get working wifi and notification signal bars illuminated but no signal status icon ie...3g/hdma ? From what I know, these fixes are being worked on..

I am not sure why. I have old baseband. I flash the images as usual. And when I feel like it, I overwrite the files with the old baseband fix and everything works. Including the status indicator for 3g hspa. The wifi indicator doesn't display signal strength but everyone knows that. As far as I know some sims still have issues and that is with regards to getting apn info out of the sim.
If the normal fix doesn't work, why don't you try aspee fix?

Yes indeed kernels and mobile data files are independent from what we see here. Actually my issue was using these ROMs that needed new baseband. So a lot were asking about old baseband. So I looked around and put a thread about it. I stayed away from new baseband since its a lot more of a risky upgrade than a ROM flash!
It is risky,I had a scare recently when I had a ln AMSS error and phone was stuck on emergency mode (god I'm glad I didn't take the battery out or disconnect) I've flashed from v10e to v20g about 6 times..I stuck to v10e with using old baseband fix...I've been wanting to find a reason why tmobile usa doesn't have working 3g/hdma etc... on v20 basebands versions but I'm sure someone will have fixed soon...as far as cm9 ? I have personally not tested using old baseband fix but I've heard from more people about it not working than from people saying it works, even Arjen himself recommended me to do that, good guy...I still have yet to figure out why we can't add apn's manually

First, sorry if this has been asked, I actually did try to find the answer on my own but no I cant seem to find it.
1st: Should I upgrade to 2.2?
2nd: Are Froyo and MIUI roms similar or is one better than the other?
3rd: Are there any limitations? Such as something not working yet? Or have most major bugs been fixed?
4th: It's obvious this voids the warranty, if I need to send this thing in for repair, can the original OS be put back on?
From what I've heard 2.2 is alot better, and would most likely be welcomed, I just need my questions answered so I don't screw myself over before I do this.

1: its really up to you.
2: Regular froyo looks like stock android, miui looks more like an iphone rom. The speed and performance of the rom depends on how the Creator of the rom optimized it.
3: most things are working on most roms. On some, certain features like wifi, or GPS doesn't work, but those are mostly the roms that are in beta. I have yet to find any custom rom with a FULLY working camera.......
4: yes it can. You coould use pc companion, or SEUS, flashtool, and there's even a method to get back to stock with out using usb(if the ports broken or something...)
I switched to miui(based on froyo) because most other roms seemed kinda the same to me. Just remember to read the instructions before flashing a new rom, and check that you have the right baseband.
Happy flashing

Well the MIUI looks good.
Is there anything besides the camera that I should know about?
Also when you say not fully working camera, what do you mean?
Also my baseband says 2.1.55, so I'm assuming when someone asks for my baseband it's 55? So I need to find a rom that supports baseband 55 right?

On trips miui 1.5.5 which I am using, its smooth and fast, everything works except the camera (zoom + light not working). Its recommend to use baseband 61 or higher for best results, however I have heard of problems with 61 (but they were probably false) so I am using baseband 54, and everything seems to work. Not sure how 55 would work (and yes your baseband is 55) but you can try it, or you can flash a new baseband via flashtool.

I looked on the forum and people were saying Cobrato's rom was pretty good.
But on the instructions to install it, it's just saying flash this flash that.
Is there a guide that actually tells you what to do?
I found this dummy's guide:

But it doesn't mention anything about flashing the entire OS.
Thanks

Do you have xrecovery? That is very useful for flashing roms and such (but not basebands)
Once you have xrecovery, simply copy all of those files to you sd card, reboot, tap the back button when Sony Ericsson appears on the screen, backup, full wipe, wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache, wipe battery stats, flash the zip files in the order they recomend (you will need to flash the baseband patch) ect ....
To get it, there is a thread in the Dev section where you can download install xrecovery. EDIT: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=859571
If you need any specific help with xrecovery, just ask

Busybox is installed.
But I get an error trying to install xRecovery, the sh command won't install says:
cp: can't stat 'sdcard/Android/data/com.zoz33.xrecoveryInstaller/busybox' No such file or directory
any idea whats wrong?
Edit: Oh I'm using the installer APK from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9561575
Should I use something else?
that happened to me the first time as well. you will have to do the manual installation as described on the xrecovery thread.
Can i use something other than root explorer thats free or do I have to pay up?
you can use any file explorer that can access the system partition, i will try to find an acceptable one now...
EDIT: File Expert from the market is acceptable
Ok I got it installed, it looks like sh was already there but I overwrote it.
I tried that thing you said, pushing the back button when I see SE, but it didn't do anything.
Hmm it can be a bit trickey sometimes... just try again. Power off/hold down power button till it vibrates/as soon as Sony Ericsson appears on the screen repeatedly tap the back button (with the arrow) until you get to the xrecovery screen. Goodluck
Sent from my X10 TripNMiUI-IRIS using XDA Premium App
Still nothing.
Going to try downloading flashtool, says if I reinstall xrecovery from it I can boot directly into it.
That was my next suggestion... once your in flashtool, connect your phone then Ask Root Perms then press the xrecovery button and it should install it. Then you can press advanced>xrecovery>reboot into xrecovery or use the back button method.

Hey folks,
I just bought the white international SGS II and i'm loving it!
I previously had an Infuse 4g, so I am pretty experienced with flashing/backing up/ restoring...but I have questions/concerns regarding the I9100.
I am about to try out the CM9 Unstable, so I backed my current stock ROM up using CWM Manager 3.0 (I am on CF-Root 5.0) onto my Internal SD, as I do not have an external SD card.
Now, I have had bad experiences with CM7 with Infuse and ended up not being able to restore due to many problems like MD5 mismatch, different CWM version, and problems while restoring ( I think it said something like devblock??)
So I'm pretty worried about not being able to restore back to the backup i just made.
So correct me if I'm wrong folks,
1) Go into CWM, flash CM9(once? twice?), Gapps, Faceunlock,
2) Data wipe/factory reset
3) Reboot
and should I choose to restore back to the stock Rom backup,
just go into CM9's recovery and restore..?
will this method give me problems restoring? will I have different versions of CWM recovery from the one I have currently? Is there any way to check if my back up was made properly?
Thanks a lot folks! Appreciate it!
Edit: "Make sure you're already running ICS bootloader (if not, go to SamMobiles and flash XXKP2 bootloader)". Is this necessary? Cus I have seen some folks say that they've not and was fine installing CM9.
First the procedure:
1. Wipe
2. Install CyanogenMod 9
3. Reboot
4. Install CyanogenMod again
5. Install gapps and face-unlock
Worked for me every time.
Your backups should work unless there were errors while creating them.
If you want some more safety, you can create a new backup after flashing the Siyah-kernel. The latest version uses the same version of ClockWorkMod as CyanogenMod 9.
Whether you need to flash the bootloader or not, depends on whether you already have it or not. I'm running galnet-MIUI and already had the bootloader installed. I don't know how to tell if you have it.

Ok...
I did further research and found out that Nandroid backup backs up everything EXCEPT the kernel.
I'm pretty sure that CM has its own kernel...but will it be CWM 5.0.2.7(the one i made backup in.)?
If it's not, the correct steps for me to restore my nandroid back up is to
1)boot into download mode from CM9,
2) put the cf-root kernel that i used in the ODIN PDA, flash,
3) turn off phone, reboot into CWM, then restore my nandroid back up right??
Can anyone please confirm this method??
I only have this phone and I cannot risk soft-bricking or hard-bricking this beautiful device.
Thanks in advance!
Also, i made a back up in blue recovery of CWM 5.0.2.7..does that matter?

thanks for the reply,
so I must have the ICS bootloaders in order for CM9 to work?
ooo siyah kernel method... that makes it easier! haha thanks so much!
I will proceed to do that!
btw, how is CM9 working for you?
do you think you'll be able to use it as a daily driver now that NITZ is gone??
1. Afaik cwm backs the kernel up and restores it too. (afaik = 99.9% sure, in this case)
2. CyanogenMod ships with its own kernel.
3. The kernel is not cwm. ClockWorkMod is just the recovery that is integrated into the kernel. CyanogenMod 9 has cwm-recovery 5.5 (Siyah too btw)
4. You don't need to use download-mode to restore.

You must have ICS-bootleggers. He did not say that for fun xD.
Is it suitable as daily driver for me?
Nope.avi
Why?
Accelerometer is unresponsive, so it takes forever to flip your screen.
Battery drainage is horrible.
Camera isn't working properly.
And the biggest no-go for me:
The device gets way to hot when using it.

so then if I want to restore to my GB 2.3.5, would I need to flash GB bootloaders before restoring via Odin??
If the zip would flash the loaders, he wouldn't have mentioned it.
They're backwards-compatible.

If you need to make a post in the Q&A forums about flashing CM9, then you are definitely not the sort of person who should be flashing it. It is in very much a beta stage and there is a very high possibility it will **** your phone up even if you have done nothing wrong. If that happens you need to be the sort of person with enough experience to solve the problem by themselves. If you are asking questions before you've even flashed it then really, it's not for you. Use CM7, at the moment it's better than CM9 in every single way.

It's not thaaaaaaaaat bad. I mean, he won't be able to brick the device through cwm.
If he doesn't ask, he will never learn and it's always better to ask twice than to break something.

Thank you sniper =) really appreciate the support.
Ive been flashing and restoring before with my infuse 4g. Just sometimes ran into problems with restoring with diff CWM versions and stuff. This phone is very precious(expensive) so i thought i would learn it for sure before i attempted anything.. thanks anyways for sharing your opinion!

I couldnt agree more... i think people here on XDA need to stop trying to be all hot **** saying Oh you asked a question your a noob... in reality most ppl here want to ask the same question but dont because afraid of getting *****ed out... and when someone else asks... try to be badass and put the person down...
Iv used a Galaxy S and a Moto Atrix and now a S2... flashed the life out of each phone along with all kinds of stuff and mods... yet i would have wanted to ask these same questions before flashing hence googled and found this thread... So thanks to those that replied as well... i was about to flash ics till i read this and guess imma hold back now even more...
But again i think people here need to calm the hell down... a person asks a question in the thread and you call them a 'noob' and what not... a person asks a question in the Q&A section and again you tell them off... stop being such anal retentive trolls...

Most people should not flame some one as long as they show they have at least tried to look for an answer first. Yes we were all new at one time but we all learned.
Like you said you Googled and found your answer. Not that hard.
Think it's bad now. Should have seen it a few years ago. Lol clutter up the threads with questions that the answers were found with a search. You got warned. Do it twice and you went on vacation for a few days to learn how to search. So the next time you think people are being too hard. Remember it is not as hlbad as it was.
When I search for the answer, I ended up here.
are these considered ICS bootloaders? If not, when would you flash them, because they are completely unmentioned in any of the instructions or FAQs

WTF??? A quick Google of SPH-D700 shows that to be the Samsung Epic 4G, which is a Sprint phone. The I9100 is a GSM phone. Sprint is a CDMA network. I hope you're planning on changing carriers if you hope to use the I9100.
Unless you're just confused, and actually ordered a Sprint variant of the Galaxy SII, which is the SPH-D710, or as they call it, the Epic 4G Touch.
Just so I'm clear, the I9100 will NOT work on Sprint's network.
Yea I'm aware that I am on sprint right now. I am aware that the i9100 is GSM, and yes I will be using att.

Hey, I had to check. Some folks just make uninformed decisions and are baffled when the equipment they order doesn't work on their network.
LP6 with my GPS fix works pretty damn well. FM Radio is the only real issue I have encountered. If you want a more ICS experience, push trebuchet or NOVA launcher to /system/app and it will be much better.

It's so popular it's one of those phones - like Desire HD - that's known inside and out Been out in europe for ages, but the US had better carrier specific devices, faster CPUs, etc. At it's core the same device mind.
I was in no rush for ICS but tried WanamLite and all was fine, although the launcher freezes now and then which I put down to a full phone, and an early rom.
This used the CM9 trebuchet launcher. I've got to say almost everything about ICS is cleaner, faster, smoother than previous roms - custom or not. Easy task control, nice display, and little things I still keep discovering like when you connect via USB you get a choice of media device or camera (with the usual USB development option off).
I've had this thing months and must have flashed 50+ roms lol. In the end I stuck with Leomars then the combined Leomar/Checkrom HD because of the kitchen app for easy addons and upgrades.
If youve never used a samsung dont worry, its usually a simple app that will root it and install a recovery console <- very important, cause after that you can flash anything, and as long as you get back to recovery youll be fine. Backup often - complete rom via the recovery (power on, vol down) and a data/app backup with Titanium.
I don't think you need worry about ADB or odin anymore, but if you do just follow instructions on this site...
Your reward? the best phone around esp if the rom you use adds neat things like Jkays extensions, modded apps, kitchens, good theme engine, etc. For pure Android go for AOSP roms, otherwise they're a mish mash of parts.
Change the boot anim if you want, you might get a yellow warning triangle because the sammy knows the roms "illegitimate" but its easily removed.
Finally, should you need to, the stock roms and kernels and modems are here too if you need to get everything back to default, best get them quick as the download sites are dissapearing, or rip yours first before you burn another...
Have fun! You couldn't pick a better handset right now

Just FYI. Bold/Italic/Underlined part is not exactly true. Some of the US carrier specific models have completely different hardware, and have faster clock speeds because they use inferior CPUs.
i got my i9100 today. but i am having some problems trying to get it rooted. using this method here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1125414 when i go to get the insecure kernel my kernel is not listed, and my original kernel is not listed either. So i am not sure if i do this rooting method using any kernel from the list if it will brick my phone or not.
waiting a reply from someone in the threads before i proceed.

From what I can tell, you need the insecure KJ2 kernel. That kernel is no longer directly linked on Odia's insecure kernel page, but there's a link to his Hotfile upload site where all older kernels are stored.

I am officially rooted. Thank you very much. now to get CWM installed!
I am unable to post to the [Rom] AOKP(Jellybean 4.2.1) | Task650 (1/22/13) (2nd Release!) thread due to being a noobie
So I am posting here hoping someone knowledgeable can clarify if this is a known issue or unique to me.
My device: i777 on T-Mobile. Previously on Task 650's AOKP 4.1.2 now on AOKP 4.2.1.
I like everything about this ROM. However, I noticed that I can no longer use my phone's Wifi-Tethering capabilities. I researched here and googled crazy and have not been able to find anything conclusive on this being a new issue/bug or an established issue.
I came across numerous posts where people seemed to loose their tethering capability with JB upgrades. In particular with the 4.2.1 upgrade. I even saw this in google's android bug reporting forums as well. Some claimed that this capability was removed as Google worked it out with the carriers. Yet many seem to be able to tether without any problems.
Hoping some one with good knowledge of this ROM can clarify if this is a ROM issue or somehow connected to my device. If it is my device appreciate suggestions on what I could do? I tried third party apps. They do not work as well.
Thanks for you time.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that I rebooted, reflashed, data wipe +flash, everything that I could think of and what were suggested for some generic issues with no such luck. Do not know if revising any APN settings will do any good.
I also found the following as a solution to this problem in a galaxy nexus thread for the same problem. Do not know if it applies to i777. Any advice will be highly appreciated.
"1. use apktool to de-compile framework-res.apk
2. navigate to res/values/arrays.xml
3. open arrays.xml in a notepad editor
4. edit the line "config_tether_upstream_types" change the 4 to a 5
5. save changes and re-compile framework-res.apk
from there you will be able to tether"
i have the same issue since updating from tasks december ROM to his January 4.2.1 & now 4.2.2 (3-13-2013) ROM
i dont use it often, but want it to actually work when i go to use it.
i set it up, checked the portable wi-fi hotspot box to turn it on and the text right below it says Turning hotspot on... but never actually does anything. on the december release it started working within a few seconds.
i used root explorer to look at framework-res.apk (as mentioned above) but there is no "values" folder in the "res" folder so i cant find arrays.xml

Jus flash a different kernel and you will be good to go. It has nothing to do with the ROM. Its jus the kernel u r using. Flash latest AJK kernel.

Task doesnt like when you flash another kernel...if you don't keep the one he packaged with his latest release, you can never ask for any help in his thread.

That's actually true of any ROM thread, not just Tasks. If you alter the ROM in any way (replacing the kernel, etc), don't expect the developer to help if you encounter any problems... you're on your own, to a degree.

He needs his issue to be solved. So thats the solution for his problem. If he wanted to get any help from Task then this thread probably wouldnt be here. And I personally dont think Task has any problems with anyone flashing any other kernel. No developer has. Maybe they may not help out jus coz they dont talk bout other kernels but everyone does this to clear the issues they have. No offence.

I tried AJ's 1.48 with Task's 3/13 and tethering didn't work for me.
I'm using AOKP JB-MR1 SGH-i777 Build 5 | Android 4.2.2 [2013.03.05] [UNOFFICIAL-PORT] from the ported section with AJ's 1.25 kernel to provide internet to my nexus 10 to write this post. Tethering works perfect with that combo.

Let's not turn this into a he-said-he-said thing; my intent wasn't to bash anyone for flashing custom kernels, only to point out that, in general, developers won't support someone else's work.

^This! If users run into an issue with a different kernel than the one that was packaged then the support one would get would be to re flash and keep the packaged kernel. Each developer chooses their kernel for a reason

I am kinda new to all this. I just inherited the thunderbolt from my brother bc my other phone is dead. I am rooted and s-off running santod's Official Thunderbolt ICS deoxed debloated. My question was if I am able to switch to one of the older ROMS like NuSense ROM or UnSense ROM or anyone for that matter that I feel like. I know the process of flashing since I have gotten this far, but I don't want to flash these and then be in some sort of loop with problems.. Thanks in advance:good: Also are radios universal or.. I keep seeing people say just try a different one?
You can flash any ROM you like.
As for radios, look in the post about the ROM, they usually specify what radio is best for that ROM. The newest radio is defiantly needed for the new crop of ICS ROMs based on the official OTA as the older radios cause issues.
Only thing I can add to the first response... Always make a backup first. So when you somehow get into a bad flash/bootloop situation, you have an easy way back to a working device. Also verify your download by checking it's md5 code before you flash. Almost (if not all) files you download will have it listed with the download link on the forum op you're getting it from.
