Lack of 3.0 kernel base. - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

I was pretty dissapointed when I found out that the TP was running ICS without a linux 3.0 based kernel. Does anyone think that is part of the lock up and freezing problem? ICS was designed to run on top of a 3.0 kernel and I hope ASUS can bring an updated kernel soon so we can experience a 'more true' ICS. I will say that the TP is by far the fastest tablet I have ever owned so overall very happy with my purchase.

I agree, I'm no expert on this topic, but I do note when CM9 switched to a 3.0.8 kernel for my Galaxy S, it has been more reliable, my uptime has been weeks, and has been faster to boot.
On top of this, this rom is considered alpha quality too .

The difference between 2.6.39 and 3.0 is minimal. See here.
Quoted from the link:
For those of us not on the kernel developer list, what are the major differences between 3.00 and 2.640?
Actually there is no differencies at all between those. They are the same.
This is a kind of discussion Linus Torvalds started would it be time to name the newest kernel 3.0.0 or just continue the 2 series naming.
Generally upgrading the versioning from 2 series to 3 series would require at least one major change. Now it is planned that this kernel would be thoroughly cleaned up from a lot of old cruft, but is that enough, let's see.

Well, as we now know [0][1], there won't be anything removed from 3.0.

[Q] XXLPB ICS ROM (codeworks) presents touch lag?

Did anyone else know of this?
i am new to the i9100 (coming from G2x ICS build), i have noticed that the interface does not follow my fingers as closely as in the LG (or other phones).
Is this a known issue?
Thanks a million

Thanks. Since this is my first ICS rom, I have to check on that rom you mentioned. I am a noob. Bought this i9100 with this ROM already on it.
struggling with all the search results
Although I can't attest to it, I did see a few people complaining about touch lag in both XXLPB and XXLPH. They're both leaks after all, and not official yet. You'll want to wait for a while till kernel sources or an official ICS ROM comes out.
CheckROM will be flawless due to it being based on a Gingerbread ROM, and any other GB ROMs for that matter (I used CheckROM and its pretty responsive). If you want, you can switch to them temporarily until a better ICS alternative comes, or stay there and wait for a better one.

Linux 3.x kernel

Why are we still using a 2.6 kernel? Isn't ICS supposed to be a 3.x kernel? What are the benefits that we are missing out on by not having a 3.x kernel? Is there any difference in performance or features? I have no idea about any of this. I am hoping that someone can shed a little light on the subject for me.

2.6.40 is 3.0
The prime is running 2.6.39 and 2.6.40 was the version that became Linux 3.0. We're just before 3.0. The big issue is that Android develops outside the Linux tree so they have to port Linux changes in to Android. That takes a while. The good news is that Android was merged in to the Linux source tree recently so they should track more closely in the future.

No it's nVidia's fault. The standard Tegra3 kernel is 2.6.39.
But anyway, we are not missing much at all.
As Gary posted Nvidia Google and Asus has a meeting this week. So at least there is hope they start pushing things forward soon It could very well be that the "gaming issues" discussed in another thread are related to the kernel as well^^ Not that i have an idea what exactly the kernel is doing but its the only explanation i could see with my limited knowledge
.21 is pretty great so far, but we're not quite there yet.

Apache incorporated the 3.1 kernel in the TF201 CM9 nightlys about 2 weeks ago (sorry - I realize you probably know this ). A lot of people were complaining about it since they were having problems, and he reverted to 2.6. I was pretty impressed with 3.1 - my wifi would occasionally drop off but the power consumption was a load better than the 2.6 kernel.
If anyone is unlocked and interested in how 3.1 runs on TF201, search back through the CM9 thread in the Development section. I am pretty sure that the 05/10 nightly uses the 3.1 kernel...

Only the 3.2 and 3.3 kernels have made substantial ARM and Android related changes. 3.0 and 3.1 are effectively still 2.6.39 when it comes to features.

Gummy is sweet - I really liked it before I went back to my personal favorite - Eos Cornerstone nightlys. I used CM9 for several weeks but moved away from it when Gummy appeared. I will go back to it at some point - they're definitely pushing things in terms of development like using the 3.x kernel, getting the dongle working on a non-stock rom etc
Actually 3.x kernel has no essential features that must be implemented to Prime. I can count some I treat really useful: memory management changes, driver for Tegra AES hardware (will affect SSL and VPN performance, I think), maybe some changes in networking. Nothing we can't live without
Am I right?
Other Device with Android ICS and kernel 3+, work more smoother then with kernel 2,6.
And Google add Kernel 3 to Galaxy Nexus. If there is no more changes? why they do it?
But what about rumors. Asus Doing Kernel 3+ for Prime or We never get it?
Honestly I don't need more smoothness to my Prime and I even didn't overclock the processor yet.
Let Google experiment with Nexus, I need more stable software. There's enough bugs in the Prime, I don't need any more. Of course I'll try custom ROM with the new kernel, but only if it bring something really useful.

I'm just waiting for the official release. I think it well be soon enough, don't worry. Like stated above. Once out i would let it settle into the dev section for a week or two to mature, then flash a custom ROM based off the official ics. Ocing this phone will not benefit me in ANY way whatsoever. Already score 3800-4200 in quadrant on this rom. Have full premium suite. Run ANY game at a rate that is super smooth. Get enough battery life to have 4.5 h of screen on with 24h unplugged.
Pray tell, how the hell will official ics help me? It won't.

There is a lot more you can do with a kernel besides overclocking after the source is released. It will benefit each of us. I say ICS is useless without the kernel source. It may be good now for the people that have updated to the ICS roms but it will be great after the scource is released. You can say what you but there will be no comparison to the roms now and the roms after getting the source even without overclocking. You must have no idea what your talking about or maybe your just not familiar with custom linux based kernels. The custom kernels is where its at.

WTF? Gingerbread is so damn smooth

I have been trying out several different ICS ROMs on my phone for the last few months. Never had a GB custom ROM. I was on stock UCKK6 which came with my phone and then went on to the ICS roms.
I have tried almost all of the SGH-i777 custom ROMS - and MIUI as well.
Out of curiosity I decided to go back to Gingerbread so flashed UnOriginal ROM.
First thing I noticed - Damn this is smooth. Everything - browser, launcher, touch response - everything is smooth like a baby's butt.
So whats going on with ICS? why dont we have the same smooth experience on any of the ICS roms. Is it because the official source code has not been released yet? or is it resource heavy compared to GB?
Do not want to start a ROM comparison but just curious. Having moved back to GB I am not sure I am missing anything critical from ICS. Others might not share this opinion but this is what it is for me and the things I use my phone for.
I am still bitten by the flash bug - so will continue to try out the ICS ROMs.
What do all of you think about moving back to GB and the pros/cons? What ICS feature will you miss the most? Please share your thoughts!
<puts flame suit on>
I'm about ready to go that route myself... Becoming frustrated when I find a "perfect" ROM, only to have the wlan_rx wakelock come back and drain my battery into nothingness. My favorite GB is Shishir's - Fairly stock, but with some nice tweakability, and have never run into the same battery probs.

It is a personal choice.
In here, in this world, whole universe, no one forces you to do what you don't want to.
Once in a while, I still heard some people saying "Windows 3.1 is so much better than Windows 7".
It is purely your choice so no need to put the flame on.
It's good that seeing you in fact trying out a few different ROMs and finally made the decision on your own.
That's a good sign for all of us.
I've had the same experience as well. I'm not so sure if it's issues with the roms but more with the Kernels. There is a lot involved to tune the kernels just right. I'm no developer but I believe ICS may just be a little more complex this GB.... or at lease ICS is not so forgiving.... I'm not developer so who knows.
On a side note, I just tried the PARANOIDANDROID v1.1 port so far this has been on the same level as smoothness as any GB rom I've ran. Link below:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1660974
I even found a port for my SGS Captivate and wow.... its 10x better then the GB rom. So this rom has something going on that I'm going to keep testing out. You may want to give it a try as well.

I did try Binnacle Beta 7 yesterday. I did not realize it had android 2.3.6. I somehow like the bounce effect in 2.3.4 that the UnOriginal ROM offers. Hate the glow effect in 2.3.6. Also, personally I felt UnOriginal was smoother than Binnacle (no offense) - just my opinion.
I did not leave it on long enough to comment about battery life. I flashed a different ROM. Seems like I am turning into a Flashaholic (need to restrain)
My progression:
Unnamed, then MIUI then CM7 then CM9. Doubt I'll ever leave CM9.

[Q] Daily driver ROM

Hi,
my wife uses her Atrix 4G and likes it very much. I put the Nottachtrix ROM on it about a year ago. It is still 2.3 based, so I was thinking about to get her a stable 4.x ROM. What is your advice? Which ROM shall I go for. Stability is the king. Nothing else really matters. She is not a tweaker, nor gamer.
Thanks.

If you want stability, stay on a GB based ROM. Any ICS (4.0.x) or JB (4.1.x-4.2.x) ROMs are semi stable, but have their drawbacks. The biggest problem with stability was the kernel. Now with a compatible kernel, we're getting somewhere, but we still have a long way to go before its at the point where it can be a daily driver.

Thanks and sad to hear that. Let's hope it will be better soon.

Its a work in progress, the public alpha just got released on the 19th. Main issues are battery life, overheating, random reboots, camera, and on blur based ICS ROMs, bluetooth and home button. Also, screen tearing seems to be an issue for some devices.
