Hi I have spent days on this but I can not find an answer to my issue.
I am a noob but have learned a lot over the past few days just reading.
I have an unlocked HBoot 2.1 bootloader. I can not boot to Recovery, it errors out. I pull the battery and reboot, everything is ok.
I can not root. I get errors - Permission Denied.
I tried to do anything in adb shell and I get Permission Denied or operation not permitted. The phone works but I would prefer to root.
I appreciate any feedback.

Are you using the OneClickRoot?
Did you flash a custom recovery? If not, download Amon Ra here:
http://www.mediafire.com/?chpoxzb8bl4nn2b
and flash that then use that recovery. If you want root, go into the developer menu and install su then you should be set.
I did try One click as well as few roots. I will try to figure out how to "flash the recovery" and report back.

Pull battery, put back in, boot into bootloader (hold volume down and power) and go to fastboot, connect to pc, in cmd prompt on pc type:
fastboot flash recovery nameofrecovery.img
Just make sure you add the .img on the end of the file name or you will get an error.
After you flash that successfully, go into recovery on the phone and navigate to the developer menu and there will be an option to install su. Do that and you should be rooted.
Since you unlocked, I assume you are set up to use fastboot. You can put the recovery file in that same folder you were using and run the command above.
Can't flash recovery image
I read the instructions on how to flash a recovery image from the computer. When I try it through the adb I still get Permission Denied. I can't do it from the emulator on the phone - Permission Denied.

Did you add ".img" to the end of the file name? I had an error before I did that.
Also do you have the following items in the folder you are using? (you don't need the unlock item, I just keep that and recovery in there to have them handy) Those are all the items you need for flashing stuff so if you have a bunch of other folders and files you can get rid of those and just set up a folder like the attached pic.
Also, make sure HTC Sync isn't running.
Just flash the recovery through fastboot, Amon Ra specifically as you can gain root from it as well.
Thank you all for the suggestions, I really appreciate all the advice. I tried to flash from the computer and got "Failed (remote: not allowed)"

You can flash the recovery right from the phone.
If you downloaded the OTA update download this
If not, download this
1.Put whichever file you downloaded onto the root of your SD card, which is ext_sd. Rename it to PH98IMG.
2. Pull battery out. Put it back in. Hold power & volume down until you're in H-Boot. You will see green text moving and it will eventually say, do you want to update? Press volume up for yes and then press power to reboot.
3. Delete the PH98IMG.zip off of the root of your SD card.
4. Pull battery out, press power & volume down until in H-Boot.
5. Scroll down to recovery and press power.
6. You will be put into Amon Ra recovery and from there, you can root your device.
Hope I helped! If I did, a thanks would be greatly appreciated!
As far as I know I did the OTA update. I downloaded that image and renamed it - put it in the root of the SD card and the green writing says - wrong image or no image.
Thanks,
g

When I try the HBOOT - Fastboot I get about 6 green lines looking for parts of the image and they all say No Image! one says No Image or Wrong Image. I can not read them as they go by too fast.

Problem one is you need to reunlock your phone with the file from htcdev. Once you do that flash AmonRA via ADB and use it to root.

Now it says
Main Version is Older!
Update fail!
Tried it with both images older and newer - although they are the same size so I am wondering if they are the same image.....
Same error
Main Version is Older!
Update Fail.
Unlock using this command in fastboot with the phone connected via usb.
fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin
Then flash the recovery with this command.
fastboot flash recovery nameofrecovery.img
Nameofrecovery.img is whatever the name of the recovery image is. That is just an example.
The recovery should be in the same folder that fastboot and adb is in. If you need to download it again you can get it in the Amon Ra thread in the Dev forum.

HTC's unlocker tool gave you S-OFF?
To answer your question though, if you see the red triangle with an exclamation in it push Vol UP + Power to bring up the menu. You'll need to flash a recovery with fastboot to replace it.
edit: twrp is a good one and can be found here
Yes I have S off. I saw where others still have S on. I pushed volume up and power and was able to attempt to install the zip. I get the "signature verfication failed" error message.
What recovery are you trying to install and how are you trying to install it?
Sent from my PG86100
TWRP. The only way I can get into recovery is as described above. When I attempt I get the red triangle. I then push volume up and power enabling me to attempt to install a zip. It appears the zip attempts to load but that is when I get the "signature verification error"
The easiest way to flash the TWRP recovery is to download the PG86IMG-twrp-shooter-1.0.3.zip file from the TWRP thread, and rename it to PG86IMG.zip
Place it on the root of your SD card, and power down the phone. (Make sure you have Fast Boot turned off in your phone settings. It's found in your Power settings on the phone.)
Once the PG86IMG.zip file is on the root of your SD card and you have your phone powered off, press and hold Volume Down and Power. Once HBOOT comes up, it will scan your SD card, find the PG86IMG file, and ask you if you want to flash the file. Press Volume Up to confirm (I think its Volume Up, I'm typing this up from memory.)
TWRP will flash to your phone, and then you're done. To get to TWRP recovery from a powered down phone, just repeat the Volume Down + Power to get to HBOOT, and choose Recovery from the options listed. You should be golden
TWRP doesn't work with the HTC unlocker method. You have to use an older version of CWM. Look here for the file its buried somewhere in this thread:

TWRP won't work even if he achieved S-OFF using HTC's unlocking method? That's good to know.
Connect with adb and try:
Code:
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot getvar security
fastboot oem readsecureflag
That should say off and Zero but from what you're describing it may still be on. I wonder if HTC decided to redefine "S-OFF"
So the problem is resolved and I have full root! I was able to change the file name of TWRP to PG86IMG.zip and it was automatically sensed right away on reboot. I was then able to get into recovery but still no root. I had to flash Superuser from ChainsDD from the Market. After 2 attempts I succeeded on the 3rd. Full root with S off and no problems. Thank you to everyone who gave me ideas and suggestions. Thats what is great about XDA

if you have a copy of your boot.img and/or your recovery.img file flash that through your fastboot usb screen and reboot you should be ok pending your /system and /data partitioms are ok... if not follow the rest....
ok im goignt to guess youre new to flashing and the android development... but first thing is first... download the stock recovery zip on the other listed thread and rename it PG86IMG.zip... then reboot into your hboot/bootloader.... this will install a stock rom and recovery AFTER that you must reboot then shut down and reboot into your hboot again and from there go to fastboot and plug in the usb cable so your prompt says fastboot usb and then relock your boot loaderafter that finishes reboot again to the ROM and then run your updates... after you get the updates you want you can unlock again and then reinstall superuser and proceed as you want....

Ok following your instructions I downloaded the RUU (two of them infact) changed the name to PG86IMG.zip, when booting into the bootloader, it starts checking the PG86IMG.zip file, there is a blue status bar on the top right, when it fills completely in, it just starting checking the SD card for files again, and then goes back to the normal bootloader screen with options to select fastboot, factory reset, etc... Is there something I missed? I believe there should be some more options.
EDIT: the football post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1334473 only goes to .exe files, I had downloaded a .zip file from a different source with the same name, Should I have changed the .exe to PG86IMG.zip?

no...do not install the exe file at all.... the zip file if it is a trusted source should work...after it loads the files it finishes booting into the hboot screen...from there you can boot into the rom to verify that there is no superuser program and then power down and boot into your hboot again and relock your bootloader then reboot to the rom and update....when you boot back into the rom after installing the zip file it should look like the way it was when you first got it...if not you may have the wrong zip file
Ok I found out there was a zip on that page, I will download that and see where I get. Thank you so much for the help so far.
Ok issue is solved. I guess I needed to be relocked before I could update with PG86IMG.zip. So I guess in the future make sure you are not rooted when trying to update

Two threads in different sections?
You are not bricked. What were you looking to accomplish
Flyer
I was unlocking a friend's bootloader the other day via HTCDev for another phone. I unplugged during the process as well however this didn't affect it. Your bootloader is telling you that you're also unlocked. How long have you waited on the black screen after the HTC logo?
If you hold power and volume down to enter the bootloader then go into fastboot mode, can you connect the Flyer to your PC and enter the following command into a terminal;
Code:
fastboot devices
A serial number will come up if your Flyer is being recognised. If this is the case it would be possible for you to flash a custom recovery enabling you to then flash a custom rom.

Sorry actually I get this:
HT15SJN00622 fastboot
I would think, as mentioned, your best route is to flash a recovery then a rom. Has to be a rom with a stock kernel so I suggest either virtuous or iodriod. Assuming your on hc which I believe is the case. Download a rom to your pc then download this and place it in the same directory as your Fastboot commands
https://m.box.com/view_shared/9bb9ba944ea6f301afe8
Then with flyer in Fastboot and connected
Fastboot flash recovery "name of file here"
Then go back to hboot and select recovery should now have it. Under options in recovery mount to pc and place rom you downloaded on your external sd. Then go back and select install zip from sd find the rom and flash it

I wanted to go back to gingerbread
but now i regret it
question:
by putting those two files to the same directory can I put them in my folder adb with adb.exe, fastboot.exe ?
I have a problem with this, I am not sure ..
So you have a best buy flyer and wanted to roll back to gb. Your hboot says unlocked and you have not yet flashed a recovery. First thing I want to do is get you booted then if you still have the stomach you can go back to gingerbread.
If you have not already, download the recovery.img I linked. Place it in the same folder as the Fastboot.exe. Put your flyer in Fastboot mode.
Open a command prompt on your pc. Change to the directory that has your adb/Fastboot commands. Type
Fastboot flash recovery "name of downloaded recovery file.img"
No quotations just file name then hit enter
Should flash recovery. Download a hc rom to your pc, I suggest iodriod which is a smaller file. Then place it on ext sd and flash like you would any rom.

I was on 4.0.3 and I flashed the zip through AromRa recovery.
Now, when booting up, its stuck at the 4G screen.
The update was the OTA update released to update radios to Global. THIS
It didn't gave any error at all, it said "Reboot to complete installation or update". But when I clicked the reboot option, I saw a line saying something like "Can't write....." then the screen went off and it rebooted. This line was not there, or atleast not visible before I clicked the reboot option.
I am new to rezound and android, so please let me know what I can do. I wasn't able to get a nandroid backup before doing this, had no ext. SD card.
All I did before flashing the zip was flashing the custom recovery. Nothing else. No SU or anything else.
Can I RUU 4.0.3 to fix this problem?
Yes you need to ruu to get it back. I'm assuming your s on. You need to be s off in order to flash radios by themselves.

Yes, that's the latest global RUU.
You need to relock to run it:
fastboot oem lock
Put it on your sd card and it should do it's thing when you reboot. Run it a couple times and make sure it's finished so it will get all the system files. I believe it reboots you once it's done.
Then you can unlock again, flash recovery and root. If you have trouble rooting again search this forum for "super su" and you'll find a version you can flash to gain root.

I downloaded the same RUU from a different source and flashed it. But the same failed remote not allowed error.
1 question.
In adb, do I need to type the command fastboot flash zip PH98IMG.zip in the hboot (with otions fastboot, recovery, clear storage, simlock, image crc) or after selecting the fastboot option at the hboot screen?
I am asking because nothing happens when I put the command while on the hboot screen and I get the remote error when commanded from the fastboot screen.

You have to fastboot oem rebootRUU first
then fastboot flash zip PH98IMG.zip
you may have to flash the zip twice.

You don't flash this in fastboot since it's a zip file.
EDIT: Looks like you can flash in fastboot as mentioned in the above post. Cool, I like that. I would flash it twice as I've read several times that you need to to make sure it gets all the system files.
If htat doesn't work for whatever reason, just put it on the sd card of your phone, detach your phone from your pc and reboot. hboot should find it (it looks for the PH98IMG.zip file) and flash it. Flash it twice to be sure it gets all the system files.
When it's done and you're rebooted use a file explorer and delete the PH98IMG file so it doesn't flash again on the next reboot.
Here is a simple, easy guide to install a custom recovery and root your device after achieving S-Off using the RevOne method.
**Moonshine installs all the SU/busybox binaries needed for root. So if you merely want a custom recovery you can follow this guide up to Step 7.**
Takes less than 5 minutes and is really easy. First, go to one of these threads and download either classic or touch CWM CWM Recovery or TWRP if you so prefer TWRP Recovery
Step 1. Rename recovery file recovery.img *Note: If using Win7 or 8 it hides known file extensions by default. Take care to not rename the file to "recovery.img.img"*
Step 2. Move file to your folder containing fastboot.exe on your computer
Step 3. Make sure phone is plugged in to USB port and USB debugging is turned on.
Step 4. Open a command prompt and type in: adb devices
Step 5. If device is listed type: adb reboot bootloader
Step 6. Using the command prompt, cd to the directory that has your fastboot.exe and recovery file *example: cd C:\sdk\
Step 7. Once in the bootloader type: fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Step 8. If everything goes as it should, the recovery should be installed. On the bootloader screen you are currently on navigate to and select the BOOTLOADER option. Once it takes you to the new screen, navigate to and select RECOVERY
Step 9. Once it boots into recovery, select reboot now. It will prompt you to root the device. Select Yes.
Step 10. Phone will reboot. You now have a custom recovery and are rooted. Go to the play store and download either SuperUser or SuperSU. I prefer SuperSU, but it is entirely up to you.

Enjoy!!
Really nice guide. Thanks for writing this. It's also exactly the same steps one would use for TWRP, if someone is wondering about that. Just use the TWRP file and rename to recovery.img.

I've done this a 100 times but for some reason I'm getting the error "error: cannot load 'recovery.img'".
What's going on?
I did the RevOne method yesterday.
Edit, it happened with both CWM and TWRP.
After the RevOne method, my phone says **UNLOCKED** and S-Off, however is it possible that I'm not Unlocked?
Edit 2, what's really weird is that last night, I used the "All-in-one Toolkit" to flash the TWRP recovery and it worked just fine. I'm actually in the TWRP recovery right now. And then once I rebooted from recovery, it did NOT ask me to root/install SU.

Do you use Win7 or 8? By default it hides known file extensions. So if you renamed it to "recovery.img" it might actually be "recovery.img.img".
Also I believe the all in one kit installs the SU binaries for you... I wouldn't know as I don't use one clicks or kits.

Wow!
Why didn't I think of this? (I guess the frustration from last night trying to figure out why RevOne wasn't working.)
Thank you. This worked!
Fixed broken link.
Does this method erase all data? Sorry, just got my DNA yesterday
It erases nothing

Thanks, I'm dumb. Didn't realise it needed S-Off first (of course) which (at least the methods i've found) require a wipe.
Recovery Worked Great!
