[HOW-TO] Install a Custom Recovery and Root Device [RevOne/Moonshine] - HTC Droid DNA

Here is a simple, easy guide to install a custom recovery and root your device after achieving S-Off using the RevOne method.
**Moonshine installs all the SU/busybox binaries needed for root. So if you merely want a custom recovery you can follow this guide up to Step 7.**
Takes less than 5 minutes and is really easy. First, go to one of these threads and download either classic or touch CWM CWM Recovery or TWRP if you so prefer TWRP Recovery
Step 1. Rename recovery file recovery.img *Note: If using Win7 or 8 it hides known file extensions by default. Take care to not rename the file to "recovery.img.img"*
Step 2. Move file to your folder containing fastboot.exe on your computer
Step 3. Make sure phone is plugged in to USB port and USB debugging is turned on.
Step 4. Open a command prompt and type in: adb devices
Step 5. If device is listed type: adb reboot bootloader
Step 6. Using the command prompt, cd to the directory that has your fastboot.exe and recovery file *example: cd C:\sdk\
Step 7. Once in the bootloader type: fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Step 8. If everything goes as it should, the recovery should be installed. On the bootloader screen you are currently on navigate to and select the BOOTLOADER option. Once it takes you to the new screen, navigate to and select RECOVERY
Step 9. Once it boots into recovery, select reboot now. It will prompt you to root the device. Select Yes.
Step 10. Phone will reboot. You now have a custom recovery and are rooted. Go to the play store and download either SuperUser or SuperSU. I prefer SuperSU, but it is entirely up to you.

Enjoy!!

Really nice guide. Thanks for writing this. It's also exactly the same steps one would use for TWRP, if someone is wondering about that. Just use the TWRP file and rename to recovery.img.

I've done this a 100 times but for some reason I'm getting the error "error: cannot load 'recovery.img'".
What's going on?
I did the RevOne method yesterday.
Edit, it happened with both CWM and TWRP.
After the RevOne method, my phone says **UNLOCKED** and S-Off, however is it possible that I'm not Unlocked?
Edit 2, what's really weird is that last night, I used the "All-in-one Toolkit" to flash the TWRP recovery and it worked just fine. I'm actually in the TWRP recovery right now. And then once I rebooted from recovery, it did NOT ask me to root/install SU.

Do you use Win7 or 8? By default it hides known file extensions. So if you renamed it to "recovery.img" it might actually be "recovery.img.img".
Also I believe the all in one kit installs the SU binaries for you... I wouldn't know as I don't use one clicks or kits.

Why didn't I think of this? (I guess the frustration from last night trying to figure out why RevOne wasn't working.)
Thank you. This worked!

Thanks, I'm dumb. Didn't realise it needed S-Off first (of course) which (at least the methods i've found) require a wipe.

I went through the steps and now phone is off and wont turn on. When connected QHSUSB_DLOAD in device manager.
Do we need to have the QHSUSB_DLOAD drivers for this exploit to work?
Thanks ahead of time.
EDIT: Did a battery pull and started over from begining. We now have S-Off!!!!! Failed to install CWM but I will install TWRP
Does Amon Recovery work? If so, can we get instructions for that? If not, instructions for CWM.
Thanks,
Mike
Oh okay, I failed.
When I did that it just came up with a list of commands
If your phone wont turn on you probably dont have your fastboot drivers installed. Do that first
AS for amon RA recovery that hasent been built for the shooter yet. If you want cmw just keep running the revolutionary application and it will ask if you want it to flash CMW

So that means that you should opt out of the CWM install and install TWRP after doing s-off? Would be nice if we had full instructions: including what to select/install during the revolutionary exe.

Right. That's the "recovery" part.
But its also described as "root, and all". I'm wondering if this allows the installer to root the OTA Honeycomb? Or will more work be required before the install can be further changed (i.e. s-off, eventually upgraded to ICS, etc.)?
It works

No, as it says in the OP, You MUST be s-off and THEN run an RUU. Accept all updates to include the HC update and the view will be soft bricked. THEN use fastboot to push the mini ruu.

If it says it's an unrecognized command, then either you do not have fastboot installed, or you haven't gone into environment variables (assuming it's a windows box) and added those commands to the path. try that first (google is your friend and you can google in XDA). Good luck.
A quick question here. Once it is the soft brick mode, I hold down power and volume down to get back to fastboot mode. Is this correct? And I know the ruu will wipe my data but nothing here should wipe the internal sd, correct?
thank you so much for quick respond..

root
Im not sure what this method of rooting will do for us, but I am under the impression that this will help if we need to go back to GB, or flash another custom HC rom when someone else cooks one up. I have not tested downgrading.
I can report that clockwork is installed with the option to flash from zip, mounts, etc just like the old clockwork. And I still have S-OFF. I installed ROM manager, but it gave me the "you don't have clockwork installed" message. I'm not sure if that is normal, because I don't use ROM Manager. Titanium did see root. Check out the screens.

I haven't done this yet, but I'm dling the RUU right now to do it and help people troubleshoot.
To answer your question, if you hold down the power button long enough, the view will power off, then you can hold power + vol down to get back into the bootloader and select fastboot mode, then open cmd, type fastboot devices and check to make sure yours shows up, then proceed with pushing the mini-ruu. If I'm wrong guys, correct me. Hope it works out for you.

Im not sure if this matters, but when I was in soft brick, I rebooted a few times and could not get into the bootloader. It just seemed to ignore the vol down keypress. I then unplugged the usb, powered off from soft brick, and held the vol. down button down even before I hit the power button as I was turning it on. Once I was in bootloader, I just plugged the usb back in.
EDIT: More tips:
1.After I flashed the initial stock ruu, and before I accepted any updates, I turned off fastboot in the power options and enabled usb debugging.
2. I did this from a Windows 7 laptop. When I initially tried to perform the softbrick steps, I got an access denied error message. The files were sent ok, but errored on saving. I closed the command prompt, and re-lauched the command prompt as administrator. The commands sent successfully.
3. Also, once you send the mini ruu over, the Tablet sat in the the oem loader with a 70% full progress bar after I successfully sent the mini ruu. I waited about 10 minutes because I was unsure how to proceed. I finally issued:
fastboot reboot-bootloader
Once back into bootloader, I mounted usb storage, copied SU to the card, and flashed from zip

Yeah, rom manager won't work bc we don't have official support from Koush for CWM recovery so that's no issue, I was just curious is all lol. I'm glad to hear titanium detects root, as that was an issue initially for the view. Try to backup your apps, test radios (3g, 4g, wifi, bluetooth, GPS, ETC), run quadrant. I don't know how familiar you are with honeycomb to test out all of it's functions, but we are going to need a few people to test this out for globatron so he can make fixes and/or adjustments as necessary, which is why he specifically asked for devs and people familiar with troubleshooting to do this first. That's the beauty of open source, we're all guinea pigs.
I forgot to ask this earlier. What does the soft brick state look like? Is it just the white screen the the green HTC on it? I want to make sure I don't power it off while it is still flashing HC.

[Q] Rooting with HTC Desire X All-In-One Toolkit V1.1

Hello,
I had to create this Thread than asking my Question in the original post, because i have to less messages so far.
I want to install linux (chroot) on this device. Therefore i need root. (No further "modification" wanted)
Am i understand it correct, that i need to do not only Steps 1 to 5, but also Flash Recovery "ClockWorkMod" and Run "Perm Root"?
Is "Perm Root" the same like:
"Then flash SuperSU."

(Like Hasoon2000 wrote here)?
First of all, do steps 1-5.
Than flash CWM.
After that you have to boot into recovery (Commands) and flash SuperSU.zip (you can find it in "DATA/SU)
You can't run "Perm Root" with the Desire X.

Thank you. I tested it, and works now. "Flash SuperSU" was not so easy. Had first to find out that i need to copy it to /sdcard/ and then how to "flash" it correctly from the recovery menu. I selected "install from sdcard", navigate to the file, and then i had to scroll down, because there were 6 times "no" and the only "install"-option was not shown on the screen, only the "no's". But after downscrolling it worked fine.
Thanks so far.
When you run my Perm Root command, it pushes SuperSU to the phone and reboots into recovery. All you have to do on your phone is find SuperSU and flash it.

That didn't work for me. Nothing happened after pressing the "Perm Root"-button.
So I put SuperSU.zip on my sdcard, reboot in recovery and flash it this way.

if you want root all you gotta do is download amon ra 3.1.6 and flash it via fastboot....in that recovery you will see a developers option (advanced options) select that and inside it youll see install su & superuser...once you do that you are rooted bud
Yeah, the toolkit is... ummm... less than optimum.
Remember you don't even have to flash Amon Ra, or any other recovery... just download and unzip into your adb/fastboot directory, then reboot into hboot and start fastboot and enter:
fastboot boot recovery.img (replace "recovery.img" with the img name from the Amon Ra ZIP file)
then use the options in Amon Ra to install SuperSU (root) from there you can update to the latest version after it is installed.

thank yall for the responses!
oh ok. Where would you download it from? Could you send me a link? It would be great if you could point me to a youtube video of someone doing it or I would need a little more in depth of what to do to install (step by step).

If your bootloader is unlocked already, then it is super simple because you are already unlocked and therefore have working ADB...
1) Just download a recovery, CWM, TWRP, or Amon Ra
2) Extract the ZIP to your [adb sdk directory]\platform-tools\ directory (or mini-adb if you went that route)
3) Download the latest SuperSU here: http://download.chainfire.eu/supersu
4) Copy UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.80.zip to the root of your SD Card
5) On your PC open a command prompt in your adb directory
6) type "adb reboot bootloader", wait for it to complete and start fastboot
7) type "fastboot boot recovery.img" (substitute the name of the img file from the recovery zip for recovery.img)
8) Install/flash (depending on recovery) and find the UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.80.zip file and install/flash it
9) reboot
10) done, enjoy root

Will this work on Windows 8.1 64 bit? I've managed to unlock the bootloader, but cannot get SU installed. Thanks.

I think you need different drivers for Windows 8, I don't have a Windows 8 machine so I really can't help you with that, sorey... Maybe @REV3NT3CH can help here.

When in fastboot, type fastboot devices and see if it sees your phone... My guess is you have a driver issue.

[Q] Question about rooting

So I recently had my phone temporarily rooted via weaksauce, however, after updating to Sense 6 with the Verizon OTA update, weaksauce will not root properly and it continues to fail. Is there no way to fix this or am I missing something with the OTA update? I sort of need to use weaksauce because I am not confident in my rooting ability to be able to restore the phone to factory when I turn it in for an upgrade in a few months.
none
I would start over. The posts on how to root are very good. There are also youtube videos you can watch. It really is very easy to root this device. if nothing else load a program called team viewer on your computer and I will root it for you, but I want you to try first. You will use something called rumrunner. PM me if you need help

I would second that. If you are going to root a phone for the first time this is the one to start with. It is extremely well documented and this is a very helpful forum. I had the same feelings when I started (HTC Wildfire) back in the day and I did about everything wrong but in the end figured it out. Now there a several helpful threads and videos as stated above. I would recommend that you do a dry run, have everything together and go through the steps one by one in your mind or on paper before doing the actual root. You may miss something but your odds are better. Trust yourself I thoroughly believe any can root this phone and it's easier than you think and the value besides learning of the great ROMs that are here etc. is well worth it. Even if you temp root it you are going to have to know what to do to get it back before you turn it in so the knowledge will be necessary.
Are you on hboot 2.49

rumrunner will not work if he's on the ota update of sense 6, he will have to flash a custom recovery, do a nandroid backup, flash vipermax rom, and run firewater.
as to the OP, it's very easy to do, follow the guides for setting up SDK/ADB, download the appropriate custom recovery for your device (i personally like TWRP the best), place that file in your adb folder that you made from the SDK/ADB guide, unlock your bootloader if not already (i did mine via HTCdev, they have a guide). then boot into the bootloader via power+vol down, scroll with volume keys, and select with power button, go to fastboot, plug in your usb cable to your computer, if you have the drivers it will change on your device "fastboot usb". then open up a command prompt in your SDK/ADB folder (do this by shift+right click in the folder and select open command prompt here). in your command prompt type in "adb devices" to make sure your drivers are right and it see's your device. now type in "fastboot oem rebootRUU", your phone will go to a black screen that says HTC on it. now type in "fastboot flash recovery "put the name of the recovery file here".img", then after that completes without any errors, type "fastboot reboot-bootloader" press the power button with bootloader selected, scroll to recovery and press power button, once you're in recovery, do a nand backup of your stock rom, after you've done that while still in recovery, i would strongly suggest saving this backup file to your computer, you can do this in ADB by typing in "adb pull /sdcard/TWRP" and it will pull the entire directory with your backup in it.
to gain s-off and fullroot, download vipermax rom for your device, while in recovery still, you can put the rom zip file in your ADB folder, and in ADB type "adb push "Name of the zip file" /sdcard" and it will copy and paste the rom zip to your sd card, once you see it finish in the command prompt, click on install on your phone, scroll to the zip file and click on it.
when the phone boots up, make sure you connect to wifi and go through the setup, once that is done download the Firewater file, and follow the instructions. and you should get s-off, now in adb type "adb reboot recovery" and then click on restore, and restore your stock rom, now you're stock rooted, with s-off.

And i think that should be it, if after you do this and want to flash back stock recovery it's pretty simple, find and download the recovery image for the version of rom, you're using, for instance, your ota update should or will probably be in your downloads folder, if you open it with zip, (i use winrar) you will find a zip in it named "Firmware.zip" open it up, and you will see a file named recovery, extract it to your ADB Folder, boot into the "Fastboot oem rebootRUU", then simply type "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img" let that finish, then type "fastboot reboot" and it will start your phone, and now you'll have the stock recovery and be able to receive and install future OTA updates, if there is any. >.<

Really an excellent post it's nice to have all that in one place. I also was unable to get rumrunner to work and have used firewater quite successfully (which was part of what I was trying to point out above). Also, I was unable to get HTCdev to unlock my phone. That may or may not be about me. I am a Linux person and I think I might have had the wrong adb/fastboot at the time. The one in the android sdk did not work for me but for anyone on LInux who is interested the one in this link did http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one-max/help/andrenaline-rom-constant-reboot-t2853591
Once again, excellent summary, I will be bookmarking this for later.
I think all of the above info is great and everyone trying to help is awesome. However I really liked having a soft root via weaksauce for a very limited amount of apps like titanium backup and root explorer. So am I to understand that there is no newer Weaksauce or similar available for 4.4.2 and sense 6?
Enjoyment to the MAX!

As far as I am aware firewater still works. I used it just a few days ago and just saw a post today http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one-max/help/gain-s-off-t2849836 although he doesn't clearly state that he was using sense 6,
