Hi Folks,
Just an FYI if you're looking for wired networking on your Prime.
I have a stock TF201 running ICS (4.0.3). I've just tested a LinkSys USB200M (Version 2.1) USB to 10/100 baseT network adapter and I'm happy to say that it works seamlessly.
The Prime will give no indication of the device being plugged in nor of any networking (though it will show the wired IP address iff the WiFi is disabled or not connected), but networking comes up, and works. Additionally, you can also turn on the portable WiFi hotspot to share the wired network with other WiFi devices.
My testing currently only goes as far as connecting the adapter via the keyboard dock USB port - I've not tried it direct on the tablet via the USB adapter available from ASUS.
Handy to know given that you can pick up these adapters for ~£15 (mine was a freebie with my piano from Yamaha a couple of years ago, and now I finally have a use for it! )
EDIT: Just checked - it also works fine using the tablet with the USB adaptor available from ASUS. It appears that it does *not* work on the original TF101 Transformer though - the USB network adaptor powers up and the link lights come on, but the IP networking stack is not activated - I'll test again on ICS when the TF101 gets its update...
>The Prime will give no indication of the device being plugged in nor of any networking (though it will show the wired IP address iff the WiFi is disabled or not connected)
When both wired and wireless are enabled, which connection takes precedence? Or do you have to disable one for the other to work?
>It appears that it does *not* work on the original TF101 Transformer though
Quiethinker made a driver pack for TF101 w/ HC 3.2. Am assuming NIC support is an Asus value-add to the kernel for ICS, since official ICS update for Moto Xoom doesn't have it. Then, presumably TF101 will get same support w/ pending ICS update.
Would ask for someone to test a USB wifi adapter (and disable built-in wifi) to see if those are supported as well. It would partially solve the weak wifi situation for some.

??? You have tried typing "linksys usb200m" into google, haven't you? ;-)
Overstock.com, for example, say they'll do one for ~£15.
There seem to be plenty second hand ones on the market too from around $8...

I've not delved into which connection takes precedence when both WiFi and USB Wired are connected. Obviously, they both work simultaneously when using the Prime as a hotspot (certainly, you don't need to turn WiFi off, per se).

I'll test this when ICS is released on the TF101 - this was my thinking too. I suspect it is an ICS benefit...
I'll let you know.

Again, I was thinking likewise. The only problem is, I don't know what drivers happen to be lurking in the ICS kernel. I just happened to have the USB200M laying around unused, so I gave it a whirl... Maybe I need a trip down to the local, friendly computer shop to try out one or two popular WiFi dongles...

Even if the drivers aren't in the kernel, we have SaturnDe in developement section. He has been making driver/module packs for prime. New stuff originally not included in prime. Plus he now has an apk that makes quick use of installing and enabling them. He could always add the drivers/modules to his package. He says in his post to just let him know what device and provide certain info on it.
What kind of speeds are you seeing from the wired connection vs. Wireless one? Definitely a huge increase?
I tested with my Wii USB Ethernet adaptor, I noticed the same thing ICS doesn't show you're USB Ethernet is connected in anyway shape or form. But it will work. Forgive me for just noticing this thread.

I just got a Trendnet TU2-ET100 USB to 10/100 Mbps adapter (about $17 at Amazon). It works seamlessly (with wifi turned off) and, of course, nothing shows that it is connected.
I just got my $7 usb->ethernet dongle and it works like a charm: https://www.dealextreme.com/p/usb-2-0-10-100mbps-rj45-lan-ethernet-network-adapter-dongle-34691

The D-Link DUB-E100 works just fine out of the box as well.
I bought Gigabit adapter from monoprice but it does not work

Im giving my wife my laptop now that I have a transformer and dock for it. Unfortunately occasionally with work, I am going to need to connect to a wired network connection. I was thinking about getting a USB wired (you know, RJ45) network dongle, but I doubt its going to work purely on the basis of driver support. Thoughts?
There is no support for USB network devices at this time. Your only option for network access is wifi.
Why is physical network access a necessity? Is it a security issue, or do you just not have a wifi access point nearby? If the latter, you can always purchase a mini wifi access point to connect to your ethernet cable, and then just use it in bridged mode.
Sometimes i need test a particular wired connection or maybe i need to configure a network device that doesnt have wireless access, etc.
As long as you configure it properly, you should be able to reliably test network connections and configure devices from a mini wifi access point, since it will basically pretend like your Transformer is physically connected on the same segment. It's a bit of a roundabout way to do it, but it's your only solution until USB network adapters are supported.
Edit: I forgot to mention a suggestion for a mini wifi access point. My favorite is the D-Link DAP-1350.
I'm pretty sure you can get miniature 'bridge' devices that plug into ethernet and present themselves as a mini access point via WiFi (The original xbox wireless adapter is basically this)
That way you can use the on board WiFi to connect to an ethernet network.

I have recently bought a device like you suggest here. Sapido RB-1602. It is quite small, and even better it can be powered by the Transformer usb port.
bridges can be a pain to work with, especially when the entire point of connecting to the wired connection was to troubleshoot it. Also, if I have to carry around something that large, i might as well have a laptop.
I'd be interested in this also. We can't have wireless at work, and I'd like to get internet on it.
This is on my list of to-dos, I have the same needs as the OP.

How is the network setup at the office? If there are no mac addy filtering or domain login requirement to obtain or use an IP you can setup your own wifi just don't broadcast the SSID. But if your admin has alerts setup for unknow devices using IP's they will shut it down or block it.
There are other android devices that use ethernet adapters so it can be done

How about bluetooth to ethernet?

The important comment from the Amazon thread on that item is:
dm9601 chipset. Supported on Linux, but only very recent versions (2.6.21 or later).
Unfortunately not supported by the version of Linux included in latest Debian GNU/Linux release.

So if you take the Linux kernel being used by the Honeycomb branch of Android, and recompile it to include this driver from the Linux trunk, maybe you could get it to recognize the device and "just work".
Maybe.

Wondering if anyone here has been able to use a 3g dongle using otg cable and y-cable? Does ICS have any drivers built in?
Thanks
Bump anyone?
What is an otg cable and y cable?
Otg. Cable is basically micro USB to USB cable and y cable is required in order to provide power to the device you'really using.
I'm pretty good at figuring out bad lingo but I'm not quite sure what you're trying to accomplish. Are you trying to get 3g on your touch pad or power the 3g dongle like a hotspot? I'm assuming the micro USB to USB plugs into the touchpad and part of the USB "Y" cable and the dongle into another part of the "Y" but what does the y cable plug into? Being detailed and descriptive goes a long way to getting answers on the interwebs.

Figured the people that would know if it works/how to get it to work would already know what the cables are seeing as its the same equipment required to hookup any USB device, be it a keyboard, USB flash drive or external hdd to the touchpad.
Basically I want to use the 3g dongle to get internet on the TP. To do this would require external power to the dongle as the TP doesn't have a powered USB host. Most likely require drivers as well.
wouldnt tethering to a cell phone that already has a nice data plan be much better than a franken-dongle setup?

At least in the US, tablet device plans tend to be cheaper than tethering plans and carriers are starting to crack down on such practices. Its a valid request.
Not really sure if its possible on the touchpad, but I know some other devices are capable of it like the Archos G9 series and some Chinese tablets so I would not be surprised if it were.

I think most US carriers would be unhappy if you used a 3G USB Modem with a tablet plan since the modem could be used with a laptop too. Pretty sure it would be against ToS to do so.
In any case, if that's the route someone wants to go, then wouldn't some sort of 3G Wifi hotspot still be better than a "franken-dongle"?

Good point on both accounts. A mifi type device would probably be the way to go, less cables, more universal usage, etc. Only downsides being that its pricier than a 3G dongle and the battery life would not be as good, but it would be guaranteed to work.

Yeah, i tether via wifi to my android phone all the time, i also use it as an external gps receiver for my touchpad. It just seems much easier, i'm already paying for the data plan why the hell should i pay some ripoff carrier another 30 bucks a month for data on my tablet. This would however be nice to see if an external dongle will work.
all valid points. I currently tether to my phone as required, however work has issued me with a 3g/4g(LTE) usb dongle that i would like to be able to use (in addition to all the other 3g dongles i have lying around).
I've seen the wifi adapters on ebay that you can just plug the usb dongles into, but to avoid shelling out extra $$ i thought i'd see if there was any in-built or easily implemented support for usb dongles.
Having seen the cheap chinese/ebay tablets running GB with usb dongle support i figured surely there must be drivers out there that could be adapted to work with ICS.

Looks like someone did it with a wired dongle for the Touchpad...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1552102
So maybe someone could do the same for a 3G dongle?
And it also looks like there's a way to a 3G dongle working with an Asus Transformer on Honeycomb...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1151097
although it takes quite a few steps and doesn't work on ICS yet.
I also found this...
http://it-depot.net/pages/3G_Setup
But the guide doesn't mention what tablet or version of ICS this should work on. On my Touchpad running CM9 nightlies I don't have a Mobile Networks options. Between the vagueness of the guide and CM9 being an alpha, it's kinda hard to figure out what the issue might be.
I guess your original question was, has someone made this possible for a Touchpad already? And it seems to me that the answer is no, but it eventually might be done. It looks like you're not alone in wanting to get a 3G USB modem to work on an android tablet, if that gives any hope.
Thanks gmkelly.
I'd seen those links before and tried to find that mobile networks option. From what i can tell, it looks like ICS might actually have some drivers built it, but whether they are in CM9 is a different question.
I also kept a close eye on the wired lan adapter thread posted yesterday (?). If a wired adapter can be implemented, maybe it wouldnt be too much effort on getting the wireless 3g implemented...
Forget US carrier restrictions. This feature would be an absolute godsend in a country like Nigeria where a 3G dongle is pretty much the best way to get online in most places.
The only issue I see with this is that a lot of 3G dongles are only Windows / Mac compliant. Meaning that they hate linux or anything that isn't Winbl0wz XP (or 7) or Mac OS X 10.5+. And Android definitely doesn't fall under that category. Just like consoles (which I have seen people try and use the dongles for, too).
However, if you CAN get them to work, you'll be a hero in the tablet community.
3g dongle works with hp touchpad now. Check Josh's PPPWidget forum. I am using a ZTE MF110 with it on CM9 and get better performance than on a win7 machine.
He prime users,
I have one of the primes with a bad connection to Wifi.
I love to use my prime for all other futures but it would be nice if i can also use it in the rooms further from my wifi signal.
Therefore i would like to insert a wifi usb stick/dongle into my prime keyboard.
Does anyone have experience with this? Or are there other people that have a wifi usb stick and want to check if it works?
My wifi signal is secured so how can you insert a password?
I really hope that this idea will solve my wifi problems for good.
Kind regards,
Germer
Did you registered you Transformer Prime on the (vip . asus . com) asus member webpage?
Once you have your product registered you will see an option on the left that let's you "ask" them to give the "solution" they found for those who have wifi problems with their Tranformer Prime.
Better worry, because it ends arround July I think.
Thanks for your reply.
I don't have the option on my asus vip page, i sended them an email now.
I bought the prime in the USA and i live in Europe so i can not return the prime.
I still hope i can solve the issue with a wifi stick? Anybody knows about the compatibility of a wifi stick?
On the VIP website, once inside, look for a botton called "TF201 GPS Extension Kit Apply&Inquire". After the click you will see something like this:
"Thank you for purchasing the ASUS Eee Transformer Prime TF201, and helping to make it the most popular Android based tablet since its launch in December 2011. We greatly appreciate feedback from our valued customers about our products, and take it very seriously. The response to the TF201 generally has been overwhelmingly positive, but we understand that, in certain regions, the GPS functionality has not met some user’s expectations.

The offer will expire on 31th of July, 2012 (PST)."
It doesn't matter if you bought it in the USA and you live in Europe, just drop your adress and they will send you the hardware free of charge.
He again,
I do have the GPS extension kit, but does this kit also improve my wifi signal? I actually only care about the wifi signal. In the description of the gps extension kit it doesn't say anything about improving wifi.
germer
No, the dongle, according to reports, doesn't do anything to improve wifi.
Not sure why people in this thread are giving you advise on how to improve your GPS, when you asked about wifi?!?
Sorry I don't have any info on the issue you did ask about.
Sorry, my bad. I tought The dongle would help WIFI reception too.
Try searching on youtube for "asus transformer prime wifi fix" this might help. After you tested it, post here your results please.
I first brought up that idea about the wifi dongle. Demandarin said that if there is enough popularity on this subject Gary Keys might actually impliment it. So please keep seeing if more people would like this. This should be able to fix all wifi problems completely!!!
I used that video before, and it does work and improves my reception. But i can not sit at the couch and push on my tablet all the time. It is only temporarily and does not give me a good solution. I really hope that more people are interested in a wifistick solution so that someone can test it. More ideas?
Does anyone think this would work on the prime? It's a usb WIFI adapter for Apple products and some more.

Im not sure dude, but I would try giving it a go. I have messaged Gary Keys in hopes for him to allow usb wifi adapters to work on the prime to fix the wifi problem but I havent gotten an answer back yet. I assume if we all bring it up enough on these forums, he will actually impliment it in future updates. So, If you can, try spreading this idea around so more people will fight for this to happen.

It works pretty well. You can quickly change which wifi network you want to extend with this by connecting to it and using the web browser to log into the quick setup.
You can also use it as an external wifi card via ethernet if you have the dock and a usb to ethernet adapter.

Just wanted to share my experience with the tplink nano router earlier mentioned with the tfp. So my main questions was if the device could be powered with the dock of my prime: it does not other than that, the repeater function works perfectly. The router is about 25 feet from the main router. The tfp right next to it, i managed to get 4 mbps of download out of a possible 12. From the same spot, the tfp gets between -80 to -70 dbm but the dm speed barely gets to 700 bps. So for the size and the price paid for, it's quite a nice performance imho. Besides, it is possible to configure it directly with the prime (with the help of'the dock and a nintendo wii ethernet to usb adapter). Like seen in most reviews the default settings come with dhcp server options disabled but it's quite easy to manage through the admin panel. I'll try to test it throughly with different scenarios (wifi hotspot and such...) and post results. It is quite sad that it can't be powered with the dock. Other than that, i hope it will be sufficient until the time i'll find a prpper replacement for the prime.

It might be nice if ASUS cared enough to make the WL330N3G available cheaply to TF201 owners ...come to think of it free would be even better.
I got my GPS dongle but to be honest I would rather have better Wifi. I am confused as to whether the TF201 actually supports a normal Wifi Dongle - my reading seems to indicate that it requires a software update with appropriate drivers. If that's the case then maybe that's a good reason to root the Prime with a ROM that supports a Wifi Dongle!
Is there one out there?

Hello, i wish to enable promiscuous mode in my atrix 4g, but found out the chipset does not allow it.
The idea is to be able to crack easy WEP networks on the road.
Alternatively i was thinking on getting a cheap netbook and hook up a more powerfull USB wifi adapter like the 2 watt alfa AWUS036NH , that supports upgradable antennas as well, and was tested working in monitor / injection mode over linux.
but got me thinking, why spend money on a netbook if maybe i can hook up the wifi usb adapter into the atrix 4g hd multimedia dock, and then use aircrack with that wifi usb tested device, instead of the onboard wifi.
In know is possible to compile aircrack into android, but the problem always relies in incompatible monitor mode onboard wifi addapters.
With this USB addapter this issue would be solved.
Another issue is power, this 2w adapter needs it. I'm pretty sure the hd dock has a powered USB hub, so that would not be an issue. I would later hock up the dock into the car battery, or maybe use like a 12v 10a/h external battery for portability.
Does anyone has done anything like this before?
i already have a rooted phone and a debian img installed.
thanks
I'm also interested in it...
Seems that some tablet (like the flytouch 3) have a native support to some tipe you USB WiFi adapters
By the way this tablet have a similar "integrated USB WiFi adapter" (RT3070 or RTL8191SU) so it have the drivers already installed and this Is the reason why it support the adapter, I think...
Different usage scenario
Does anybody know if establishing wifi/lan using usb / multimedia dock is possible?
I'm not asking for aircrack or anything like that. I use an atrix in a multimedia dock (hooked up to stereo system) as my alarm clock, tuned to an internet radio station. My wifi on this atrix has recently burned out and I'd like to get a data connection again (external wifi/lan whatever) without needing to get a data plan (or activated sim at all).
Anybody ever try this or get it working somehow? A lot of atrixes get retired due to bad wifi, but if a cheap wifi dongle and bring it back to life, it can still serve many uses!!
Thanks!

Does anybody know if establishing wifi/lan using usb / multimedia dock is possible?

The op poses the same question as I do. It does not answer the question. Over a year has past with people's WiFi going out, new approaches or insight may have been gained in the community since then.
Since there was never an answer, a bump isn't exactly inappropriate on something that may have evolved.

Hi fellow owners,
I am considering to buy, but I'd prefer to be a cheap and get the 16GB WiFi version. However, it would be nice to be able to use a USB dongle for 3G from time to time. Anybody tried?
Thanks!

good advice. I can certainly do this as well as use a 3g wifi router i have. but using the phone's hot spot drains phone's battery and using a router adds to the bulk. that is why I'd like to try a dongle.
Thanks!

I read in the GSMArena review that the XTZ can be tethered to a phone using Bluetooth:
Even if you get a Tablet Z without 3G, you can still use mobile Internet, provided you have a data plan on your droid phone and the Xperia Link installed. The app simplifies the tethering process. It puts a widget on the homescreen that lets you turn tethering on and off.
You might be thinking that you can just use your droid's Wi-Fi hotspot feature to do the same (and you could). The difference here is that Xperia Link uses Bluetooth to share the Internet connection and not Wi-Fi. This should be more power efficient than a Wi-Fi hotspot especially considering you can keep Bluetooth on all the time, which will let tablet and phone hook up automatically once they are close enough (you can't do that with a hotspot as your battery will be dead in a couple of hours).

I haven't been able to try that yet -- my pre-ordered XTZ has yet to ship -- with my Nexus 4 but it could be a solution to Wifi Hotspot battery drain issue.
-- Edit to add --
Well, found the official Sony Xperia Link in the Google Play Store and it's incompatible with non-Xperia phones apparently. Although, the Bluetooth-tether idea still sounds promising. Is there a way to get around the Sony lock-in?
Works!
So I've got the tablet this week and tried just now to stick the USB modem into it.
Naturally you have to be rooted, then you need a dialer :
PPP Widget
from the author of usb_modeswitch (ubiquitous linux tool to change the usb modems from CD to serial mode)
then you need the usb drivers unsurprisingly missing from the stock rom:
On author's forum
then insmod the modules in the zip file:
cdc-acm.ko
usb_wwan.ko
option.ko
(option requires usb_wwan to be loaded first), drop the widget on the home, it should do its magic and ask you for the APN. Then it works.
what a joy.
p.s. apparently the dongle I have needs more power than there is on the tablet port, so you need a powered hub (clumsy) or an external battery and a Y cable to power it.
