I ended up not getting a ATT SGS2 because AT&T chose to remove this feature.
Any idea if they did it again?

Yeah, unfortunately it will more than likely be removed. One thing we can work on is if the Korean LTE version has FM, because if it does maybe we can port it over as the Hardware should be 'mostly' the same.

I guess the locked Note I preordered yesterday will end up on eBay. Totally regret not buying the int'l way back in October...

Apparently, it's not difficult at all to get the int'l Note to work with ATT (of course haven't tried yet myself), but this guide looks pretty simple to follow.

tx baaj. i have come across that thread...alot sounds like chinese to me lol. Jade knows alot it seems!
Most likely it will not have an FM transmitter. AT&T and Samsung's USA websites do not list "FM transmitter" in any of the specs.

Assume you know there are internet radio programs like TuneIn Radio?
So you won't get this phone if it doesn't have a fm radio lpl
Why does att remove the radio? Is it because data usage?

No, the fm does not use any at all. Att wants you to use an online fm service or hd radio so your paying for it!

So it is confirmed that the Note comes with FM receiver hardware... but no application to make use of it? Is it at all possible to get it working? I actually just learned there is no FM app... major bummer for me as I listen to radio quite often... and I'm not one of the lucky ones that have unlimited data.
On one hand, AT&T wants to throttle data so "everyone can have a pleasurable experience"... on the other hand, they remove phone functions which directly reduce the amount of data users require. I've been with Sprint for 15 years and trust me, I've had my frustrations with them. But AT&T sure seems to stick it to their customers more than any other company.
I'm not sure why this is a surprise. Samsung has been consistently pulling radio functionality from almost all of their US branded phones for quite some time. Though I've never really understood the reasoning, it doesn't bother me because I am not often in a position where my phone is the only source of FM radio and when I am, most often wifi is available, so I can use an app that my local FM station has out to listen to my favorite morning show (Preston and Steve on WMMR in Philly!).
Forcing you to use data doesn't make much sense to me since they have been trying to reduce network load for years now. If anyone ever finds out a real answer to this, please let us know. I'm curious.

They don't have a lot of plans. The one that I have only gives me 50 mb of data a month. Since I am around WIFI at home and work, thats really plenty for me even with Android. I get 1200 text messages and 1200 voice minutes. It only cost $30 a month.
They also have an unlimited talk and text plan with 20 mb of data for $45. My wife uses that one because she likes to talk and doesn't care about the data.
In order for it to work for Android you have to be around WIFI and be pretty self reliant. Its a prepaid service. Anyone who wants more info can PM me. I am a fan, but I don't want to come off as advertising.

Funny I switched to Verizon for the exact same reasons, plus the better phones and cheaper plans (at the time at least). I actually wanted to go T-Mobile but their service where I am is garbage.
Good luck, it's a great switch if you want an inferior network and inferior device.

Either way, I wish you the best and I hope you're happy with ATT.
Ok, totally nervous and anxious noob here. I had a question about the capabilities of the modem in this phone. My coworker has a captivate, and he told me all about the stuff you do here, and how he upgraded his modem to 4g. Is the vzw variant capable of the same? I've been reading the threads for a few weeks now, trying to figure out what to get, and now I'm just confused with the whole process, but that's a topic for another day.
Thanks.

Not. . . . . . . . . . . .
No.
The captivate can do HSPA which is all of the sudden be marketed as 4G (as HSPA+) but only up to the device limit of 7M.
That is one of ATT/TMO's ways of saying 4G.
VZN is using LTE which is different from their current CDMA#K which means phones can not take advantage of it.

Yeah, no. The "4G" he is talking about is not really 4G. It's a fake 4G.

Hahahah, this. +1
HSPA and LTE are different tech, just like CDMA#k and HSPA. HSPA has the same speed capability as LTE but the drasticly different delivery mechanism makes it a loser for these kind of tests.
LTE is the true future tech even though it doesn't meet 4G guidelines. Future HSPA evolutions are just going to be like new and improved satellite TDMA systems.... larger pipe for more terminals... but dont ldt ths customer know how many terminals there are.

If I had my choice, I would've gone with AT&T for numerous reasons, but given my circumstance, VZW was my only option. Big Red has a track record of making things difficult for the end user (like upgrading phones). I love this phone, and the service is good, but it's a bit discouraging that I'll have to wait 2 years to get a faster phone when this one has capable hardware being held back by them.
Sorry for the rant. Basically, I'm anxiously awaiting the day when I can cut the bloat and let this thing fly. Keep up the awesome work, and I'll keep reading until I get all the pieces together.

The captivate doesn't do 4g..the guy just has a theme that changed his icon to show 4g when he still has 3g. And neither phone has the hardware to run 4g.
At&t has **** for service...hence the REAL reason iPhone is with vzw now. I will never pay for at&t again.

Tmobile has changed a lot, they are just flat turning into thieves with a business license now. Never switch to a carrier just for the devices they can run, that is just plain not smart, at all.
I am not trying to be offensive, I do have your best interest in mind. With how fast devices are pushed out, there will be one that is better and what you want in 6 months time. So it doesn't make sense to move to a carrier for the phones. You will just get yourself locked into some contract that (Tmobile especially) keeps updating to strip more freedom and cost to to you.

Double check on the actual bands it supports; 3G especially considering the fact that tmob uses their own 3G unlike most other GSM carriers.
Aka it should work fine... BUT it might be stuck on EDGE at all times. Not cool.
So, looking to upgrade and kick Sprint to the curb after 12 years with Nextel, and Ting is looking like a really fine service as far as four line family plans go. I'm kicking around my HTC Hero, (CM7, gonna try ICS Beta for it's last huzzah.) and was looking for a more powerful Android. Was thinking about getting a feature phone or a mifi, and complementing it with a Galaxy Player. But the Photon looks really, really nice all of a sudden, with 4G and GSM compatibility. Toss in the best specs on a month-to-month phone that I've seen, I'm seriously considering dropping $550 on this thing. Please talk me out of it?

Stateside. And with the Photon kinda being oversold on the Ting website, and not that great a bump from the Conquer, dual core nonwithstanding, I'm still a little confuzled on what I want.
How future-proof would you say this thing is, regarding still being competitive in the next couple years? Tend to run them until they dead or unserviceable, and if blow a massive chunk of my tax return, might as well make it last a while.
Experience with Ting thus far...
Hi all,
I recently changed carriers from AT&T (using Motorola Atrix 4G) to Ting (Motorola Photon 4G) and I have recently unlocked the bootloader (yes, I lost 4G connectivity), rooted, and installed the latest version of Rocko ROM with Alien Theme.
Everything has worked out so far and I am having a good experience with the device and with Ting Mobile, from their no wait phone service policy, to their dashboard web interface. I can't really speak to the relative degree of future proofing the Photon may have compared to other phones, I am just happy that I could get away from paying so much for a similar tier of service at AT&T and not necessarily have to compromise on a phone, though not being able to use GSM towers with a prepaid SIM card is a bummer, but otherwise, so far so good. Take care all.

No phone is future proof the way things are flowing manufacturers are cracking phones out of their ass every 3 months or so. You have to look at the development threads that will tell you how active the phone is on the developers on xda are and that should give you an insight on how worth it is.

I disagree. Just because it's a mobile virtual network operator doesn't mean the the files are the same. On the contrary, I'd bet anyone using one of these device could confirm their notification bar and lock screen show Ting as the carrier, not sprint, which means at a minimum the framework-res/eri.xml has been edited, meaning it's not the same file despite being on "technically" the same network.

There has been some interest in FM radio on the North American Galaxy Note (i717).
Word on the forums is that the fm chipset is in the phone but is not enabled, with some stating that it could be enabled through the hard work of a dev.
I propose a bounty for the dev that can liberate fm radio on i717.
My hope is that enough people join me to create a reasonable prize as I understand this would take a lot of work.
I also welcome discussion by devs or others in the know about whether this even possible, if they can confirm the fm chipset, and if this has been done successfully with other devices.

If anyone has hard proof either way we can put these questions to rest asap.
From mikereidis, who's very confident there is no chip (willing to put money on it). Seems reasonable to me:
mikereidis said:

To those others I say: "Prove it". I would be VERY happy if they were correct. More devices with usable chips means I sell more apps.
I have not ripped one of these devices open, taken high res photos and analysed them, but I'm sure some companies have, and some pics are likely available on the web somewhere.
But here's the preponderance of evidence:
- No device driver visible at /dev/fmradio as in the International version. And I'd bet the kernel in use supports that driver if installed on an International version.
- No FM app from AT&T, Bell or Telus, and when asked they will tend to tell you that there will never be an FM app for these models. (But you never know what some random customer service person might say.)
Note that some carriers, including AT&T, have mistakenly used International version marketing materials that mention FM and when that is pointed out to them, they quickly rectify the web pages so as not to face charges of false advertising.
- Nobody has gotten a stock or any other FM app working on them yet, and I know many people have tried.
- US carriers, especially large ones like AT&T have been in the habit of commissioning special versions of the Galaxy S, S2 and similar models that have no si470x FM chip, despite the Canadian or International versions having that chip.
Same with the Nexus S (Galaxy S variant) and Galaxy Nexus (Galaxy S2 variant).
I've "put my money where my mouth is" and offered a $300 bounty on several devices, including some of the above, and fully expect nobody will ever qualify.

The tuner is there just not active. I have talked intently with samsung about it. The phone also has a built in volume adjustment for the fm tuner (attached). I am sure that the lack of the FM radio on the Samsung Galaxy Note is not some conspiracy on the part of AT&T to get you to pay for data. It is almost certainly due to a lack of the FM radio on the SoC. My wife's crappy HTC Status has an Soc with FM radio chip, and on AT&T it is enabled. If our phone had that functionality in hardware, it would have come enabled in software. Unlike the NFC chip and tethering plan, software blocking the FM radio will give AT&T no extra source of easy money.
I'd really like to see the FM radio enabled on our phones... if it's there.
