Hello all , and i have a verry strange thing to report , i have a galaxy s2 with a 32 gb memory card , and when i bought the card and the phone , i could transfer movies that where like 14 GB :| , and after i formated the memmory card then it tells me that there is a file limit for fat32 , again when i bought the card i could easy put files above 4 gb on the card , i used to copy files on the sgs2 when it was in Mtp conection , so please some one can tell me what happened , why i cannot copy bigger files than 4 gb now ? because i formated the card :| ? when the card was brand new everything was fine , please some expert help i want awnsers ...
That is because the maximum file size for FAT32 is 4GB. Just format it to NTFS (Or whichever other filesystem android can use) and you'll be fine again.
You answered your own question. 4GB is the limit of Fat32.. format the card NTFS or ext2 or any number of other file systems that support larger file sizes
The SGS2 supports filesizes higher than 4gb with external SDcard?
Didn't know this always threw an error for me for filesizes over 4gb.
ok stop listen every one , i know if u formate it to ntfs it will suport bigger files than 4gb or exfat , believe me ive tried and if i formate it to ntfs or exfat , the phone will report the memory card as " Corupted memory card " formate now ?
Is there any other file system that android can use something else than FAT32 ???
Maybe ext file system will be the answer to your question.
Back in 2011 before my sgs2, i had HTC Desire which you could put ext filesystem to get more internal with custom roms, because of the little space that the Desire is born with.
i do remember that ext file system is the one that linux uses.
After all, android is using the linux kernel.
ext, ext2, ext3, ext4
You can use minitool partition wizard, to create/convert file system off your sd card.
Just re-format it in ntfs and be happy
I may be wrong, but I don't believe anything other than a NT based Windows OS can read NTFS formatted drives.
Honestly, the best answer I've found for this issue is to split movies into multiple files. It only takes minutes with mkv2vob (assuming they're mkv files), and it converts them into mpegs (despite the name).
It's totally free and a great little app to have anyway.

There is a NTFS kernel module available for Android -- a forum search will turn up multiple threads on the topic. I believe there's also been some work done on ext4 and/or exFAT support; both those filesystems allow files > 4GB.
Transferring a 14gb movie onto the phone is a retarded thing to do, the phone has 800x480 screen. Re-encode the movie..problem solved.

I agree... If you use vuze or something, plug your phone in - it will detect it as a device, drag file into your phone down the left side and it will transcode it for you
Plenty of other converters but I don't know how proficient you are

Not retarded if he wants to output it on the TV though
So does NTFS & 4gb+ file sizes work on external sdcards with the SGS2?
It won't work unless you root and look for a patch or something to read NTFS. Maybe ext will work (but, if you use Windows, you won't be able to read/write it).

today i got my Transcend 32GB SD card but i fail to copy videos bigger than 4Gb to it.
anyone managed to circumvent the FAT32 file size limit or knows whether or not the HD2 can cope with an NTFS formatted card?
thanks!

It's not possible to put files of over 4GB on FAT32 - end of. There's no way round it and no, you can't use NTFS formatted cards.
The only thing I can suggest is a video splitter. If they're MKV files then use mkv2vob which converts them to MPEG files. There's an option specifically for use with FAT32 drives that splits the video into 4GB chunks. If they're not MKV then (what the hell are they at over 4GB????) google to find a suitable alternative app. There's plenty out there.
Good luck
thanks for the quick reply mate!
i just read that it's maybe possible to use an alternative Linux file systems on the SD card, but there's no confirmation so far if and how this works.
so, anyone got info on whether or not FAT32 is the only format the HD2 is compatible with?
No worries mate. I had all this when I used to have a "media drive" that I shared between my PC and PS3, so I know it can be a pain.
Hope you get something sorted.
Hi guys!
Is there some way to make our razr read/write in another filesystem than FAT32?!
My propose is watch some 1080p movies via HDMI on my TV..
Ty!
I take it they are very large video files? Fat32 has a file size limit of 4GB I believe. The only way is to use a tool to split your video files into chunks smaller than this.
As an afterthought, have you tried formatting your microsd card in windows as NTFS and copying your film across and playing on the razr (assuming you have a card big enough)? As Android is essentially Linux it should be able to read NTFS though I don't have any files big enough to test myself.
NTFS doesn't have that limit.
Good luck!
EDIT: been looking around and if you have trouble, try Drive Mount on the Android Market. You will need to be rooted & busyboxed up if you are not already. This will allow you to read NTFS formatted SD Cards
Yeah, sometimes its about 5gb files... another 12gb files..
I've got android 2.3.5, stock rom, rooted.. and NTFS, EXT2, EXT3, EXT4 are not recognize ):
The drive mount on market, is incompatible with Razr..
Thank You for response..!
Okay i hope someone can help me fast with this
I cant use FAT32 which works okay as long as i don`t have larger files than 4GB!
But the truth is that i have lots of files i want to move over to my SD card that is over that limit. I have tried EXfat and its not even readable in CM 10.1. Fine, Lets try NTFS. Now i can move the files over to the SD card from my computer. But i have only READ access in my Galaxy TAB P5110???
I cant change that in any way it seams! So What can CM10.1 handle? Not much i think? Or am i wrong?
I need to have a filesystem that can handle small files around 40.000 in the same folder. I also want a filesystem that can handle larger files then 4GB. I also want CM 10.1 to work with that filesystem, I mean so i can move files from my internal memory to the external. That only works in FAT32 for me . Any suggestions please :/
I've been trying to download some some files larger than 4GB. I downloaded them from MEGA but when it finishes the download, the downloaded file is just 4GB when the actual file is like 5.1GB.
I now this happens when trying to copy these kind fo files to the SD card. But why does it happens with the internal storage?
I have more that 14GB of storage free, so that shouldn't be a problem. The file system the data partition is formatted to is ext4.
Is there a way to fix this?

4GB is a fat32 limit. I doubt whether it is a mere coincidence that your files just happen to be limited to that size. Check carefully the format of your internal storage very carefully - it may well be fat32, even though you think it is ext4. If it is ext4, only linux-based OSes will be able to read/write to it (without special drivers).

This app says its ext4. Then what should I do to be able to have files greater than 4GB?
Or is it better to format my SD card?
I just tried formating my SD card to exFAT but my phone doesn't recognize it. It says it's corrupt. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. How do I fix this?
@Isley_ I don't think you should be trying to format your internal storage with external tools. Let the phone format it, and it should recognise it. In fact, I think the internal storage should be left well alone.

The problem is that the phone formats the SD to either FAT32 or VFAT which have a file size limit of 4GB.

Yes, it is a problem. However, not all ROMs support exFAT (probably the problem that you have now run into). You first need to ascertain that your ROM (or kernel) actually supports exFAT. If it does, then you should not have had any problem reading the internal SD.
Perhaps F2FS may be more widely supported, and perhaps this may be a solution to your problem. However, changing your data partition to F2FS will involved losing all your data (including data on the internal SD). I don't have any direct experience with F2FS, so I can't say how helpful it would be in your case. It may come with its own problems. You can experiment with an external microSD card.
Hello,
I have a big problem, because I want to store files larger than 4gb on the android SD Card.
So it is not possible to use FAT32, but if I format the SD Card as EXT2 or EXT3, on the PC with Minitool partition wizard,
the phone always says that the card is damaged and wants to format the card back to FAT32. I really need help to come loose from that damn awful FAT32. I really dont understand how they can make a operating system in the Year 2015 (The release date of Android 6.0) that can olny support a awful f*cking old filesystem like FAT32, that can only store files smaller than 4gb, in a time where micro SD Cards with 500gb had already existed, and files larger tahn 4gb were already virtuelly everywhere. Please help me, I tried all tutorials already, but nothing worked. Phone is rooted.
My 2nd question is: Why can I store files larger than 4gb on the internal memory, it seems Android 6.0 can support modern filesystems, but only for the internal memory?
If your phone's Android supports Adoptable Storage ( not every phone running Android 6.0 supports the feature ) make the SD-card ( fully or partially ) used by Android as internal memory.
