[Q] filesystem - Motorola Droid RAZR

Hi guys!
Is there some way to make our razr read/write in another filesystem than FAT32?!
My propose is watch some 1080p movies via HDMI on my TV..
Ty!

I take it they are very large video files? Fat32 has a file size limit of 4GB I believe. The only way is to use a tool to split your video files into chunks smaller than this.
As an afterthought, have you tried formatting your microsd card in windows as NTFS and copying your film across and playing on the razr (assuming you have a card big enough)? As Android is essentially Linux it should be able to read NTFS though I don't have any files big enough to test myself.
NTFS doesn't have that limit.
Good luck!
EDIT: been looking around and if you have trouble, try Drive Mount on the Android Market. You will need to be rooted & busyboxed up if you are not already. This will allow you to read NTFS formatted SD Cards

Yeah, sometimes its about 5gb files... another 12gb files..
I've got android 2.3.5, stock rom, rooted.. and NTFS, EXT2, EXT3, EXT4 are not recognize ):
The drive mount on market, is incompatible with Razr..
Thank You for response..!

[Q] SD Card Format?

What is the best format for the SD card for our TFP's? I have 2 32gb class 10 SD cards that I want to use with my TFP and want to format it correctly the first time. Also would it be good of if I put it in my Evo3D and turned it to use either ext3 or 4 before using it in my TFP? Thanks in advance
Anyone know which wouldbe better, ntfs or fat32?
ext3 will be read by any android devices, but not natively if you mount it under windows (if you have that ... lol)with direct USB connection.
ext4 and ntfs kernel support is perhaps not natively implemented in all kernels, in custom ones and some stock ones for ext4 yes, but ntfs not sure at all..... (don't know for TFP still doesn't have mine).
that's why sdcards are still FAT32 formatted... you have heavy fragmentation, 4GB file limit, but you can read it in every OS.
If you use only network share (samba, Cifs) you can format as you want as long as the kernel support it.

[Q] Formatting Micro SD to NTFS

Im trying to find a way to put files bigger then 4gb on my 32gb micro sd card. Ive checked the forums, and haven't found a way for the phone to recognize the card as NTFS format, or to beat the 4gb file size limit. Does anyone know of a way to beat this. Thanks
ext4 is more likely to work than NTFS... but it'll require some initramfs or manual shell hackery to mount.
are there any roms that have what is needed included, or is this something more complicated

Bigger files than 4gb limit !

Hello all , and i have a verry strange thing to report , i have a galaxy s2 with a 32 gb memory card , and when i bought the card and the phone , i could transfer movies that where like 14 GB :| , and after i formated the memmory card then it tells me that there is a file limit for fat32 , again when i bought the card i could easy put files above 4 gb on the card , i used to copy files on the sgs2 when it was in Mtp conection , so please some one can tell me what happened , why i cannot copy bigger files than 4 gb now ? because i formated the card :| ? when the card was brand new everything was fine , please some expert help i want awnsers ...
That is because the maximum file size for FAT32 is 4GB. Just format it to NTFS (Or whichever other filesystem android can use) and you'll be fine again.
You answered your own question. 4GB is the limit of Fat32.. format the card NTFS or ext2 or any number of other file systems that support larger file sizes
The SGS2 supports filesizes higher than 4gb with external SDcard?
Didn't know this always threw an error for me for filesizes over 4gb.
ok stop listen every one , i know if u formate it to ntfs it will suport bigger files than 4gb or exfat , believe me ive tried and if i formate it to ntfs or exfat , the phone will report the memory card as " Corupted memory card " formate now ?
Is there any other file system that android can use something else than FAT32 ???
Maybe ext file system will be the answer to your question.
Back in 2011 before my sgs2, i had HTC Desire which you could put ext filesystem to get more internal with custom roms, because of the little space that the Desire is born with.
i do remember that ext file system is the one that linux uses.
After all, android is using the linux kernel.
ext, ext2, ext3, ext4
You can use minitool partition wizard, to create/convert file system off your sd card.
Just re-format it in ntfs and be happy
I may be wrong, but I don't believe anything other than a NT based Windows OS can read NTFS formatted drives.
Honestly, the best answer I've found for this issue is to split movies into multiple files. It only takes minutes with mkv2vob (assuming they're mkv files), and it converts them into mpegs (despite the name).
It's totally free and a great little app to have anyway.

There is a NTFS kernel module available for Android -- a forum search will turn up multiple threads on the topic. I believe there's also been some work done on ext4 and/or exFAT support; both those filesystems allow files > 4GB.
Transferring a 14gb movie onto the phone is a retarded thing to do, the phone has 800x480 screen. Re-encode the movie..problem solved.

I agree... If you use vuze or something, plug your phone in - it will detect it as a device, drag file into your phone down the left side and it will transcode it for you
Plenty of other converters but I don't know how proficient you are

Not retarded if he wants to output it on the TV though
So does NTFS & 4gb+ file sizes work on external sdcards with the SGS2?
It won't work unless you root and look for a patch or something to read NTFS. Maybe ext will work (but, if you use Windows, you won't be able to read/write it).

NTFS 64GB w/ Paragon - Filesystem issues/ Mass Storage

So I formatted my 64gb sd card to ntfs and using paragon android can use the ntfs sd card. My issue is why doesn't it auto-mount when turning off mass storage? I have to mount it manually to "automatic" mode to /mnt/sdcard. So it's a pain getting mass storage to show the 64gb drive and when it does show up within 5 minutes of copying files the drive disappears from windows and fails to work. I have to set the phone to charge only, then mount paragon. Then go mass storage and it will then show up again only to fail shortly during writing.
On top of all that when I browse to view the files, they don't exist in the sdcard like the files and folders I clearly copied aren't showing up. However some folders and files show up. I don't get why mx video player doesn't see any video files in /mnt/sdcard/media/movies when I clearly copied 2 files into it and they don't show up at all...
It's a Sandisk class 10 uhs 1 64gb stick
format it as fat32
problem solved.
you should need a reason to have it as ntfs what files are you trying to put on that are over 4gb because that would be the only reason why you would.

Yeah my Galaxy note 2 can handle all hd formats like .mkv so I wanna put my 8gb .mkv's on there to watch in flawless uncompressed quality.
What's up with Paragon? Or what u know... Like it stops working after 5 minutes of transferring files
No idea but android doesn't play nicely with ntfs. Use exfat.

Does exfat work with windows? I need to be able use usb mass storage but I guess i could just use wifi transfer it's slow but better than nothing...
exfat support 4GB+ file limit right?
What's up with paragon? ppl have said it works good but it's clear to me that's it's extremely problematic.
Exfat came with windows 7 and supports 4gb plus.
I haven't tried paragon, it also could be a kernel issue.

Not sure Android supports exFAT. FAT32 is your best and safest bet, even though it has limitations.
new kernel didn't fix the issue so i guess i have to use fat32... i dont see why paragon is messing up
what about usb otg?
*UPDATE*
I fixed the problem by plugging the usb cable directly into the usb port rather than through the 6' usb extension.
So NTFS is working flawlessly and I already copied over a 4.5GB .mp4 in 1080p and it works perfectly

[Q] File system formats

I've been trying to format my 32GB sdcard to a filesystem that can read files over 4GB. Main reason being I use HDMI connection to view 1080p movies on TV.
Anyway, I've tried EXT2, 3, 4, NTFS, exFAT, and all of them come up with the "broken sdcard" message from android when I try to mount the sdcard.
I'm using kernel version 2.6.32.59-MB860-MROM and using the lastest MROM based off CM7. Anyone have any insight on where I can go from here? Thanks.
The whole entire Android system assumes the user storage (internal or external) is formatted as FAT32. This is much harder to change than you think. A simple reformat won't do.
You need to have at least part of your SD card to be FAT32 because many applications are using it to store configuration and data. You can have two partitions on your SD card, but I am not sure if video player will be able to use any partitions other than FAT32.
I found a way to format my external 32GB sdcard to NTFS and still have it mounted on the phone. Pretty easy actually. I'll post it here for those that might be interested:
-Used Paragon Partition Manager 12 on my Windows machine to format my external SD to NTFS
-Atrix wasn't reading the card so I tried a program called Paragon exFAT, NTFS, & HFS+ by Paragon Software. Link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/...251bGwsMSwxLDMsImNvbS5wYXJhZ29uLm1vdW50ZXIiXQ..
-Paragon was not able to mount my sdcard automatically as it just gave me an error, so what I did with the rom im using was mount manually to /mnt/sdcard-ext. Should be good to go after this.
Been using it for a few days and everything is working well so far. Only annoying thing is everytime I connect by usb to my comp and enable usb storage I have to manually remount once I disconnect.
