So I guess this has been asked but I really need details on it cause it's a real throwback for CM7/9 to me...
So I understand that MotoBlur and CM7 "read" the storage differently, pointing internal/sd to different folders in the system folders.
Now I must say, although CM's way seems more logical, for now, I find MotoBlur more practical. I understand that there is a "Internal Storage only" option the CM7 settings but still, I'm having a lot of bugs with many apps.
Ex :
- With Titanium Backup, I HAVE to move my backup my "Titanium BackUp" folder on the SD Card. If I point the internal storage within the settings as the standard folder, the m***f*** will wipe the current folder of its content. Wasn't so happy when that I happen ("m***f***" explained !); thank god for online backups.
- Many apps that can't change the folders' direction won't be able to read any data from the current folder in the internal storage. I'll HAVE to move them.
- Many bugs in many apps such as PlayerPro. I always leave my Music on my SD. In Motorblur, I'll select only the "Music" folder from my SD and only the music from there will be shown. If I do the same in CM7 with the same set up, I'll keep seeing the music from ALL my sd card, not only my Music folder. Also, playback will stop on several tracks, saying that it can't be found anymore...
So is there a way to switch from CM to MotoBlur and vice versa without copying everything, breaking stuffs, etc. ?
Because honestly, it prevents me to really test CM7. I don't want to debate about which storage method, CM7 or MotoBLur, is the best, although I would only say that CM method is buggy and therefore, less pertinent, asking for way too many fixes...
I just want to know if there is any way to switch quickly with no bugs. If not, I'll stick with MotoBlur until CM9 is daily driver material...

Have you tried switching to "internal storage" in the CM settings right after flashing the ROM and before installing any apps? Then reboot immediately? Maybe also select the "Install Location" option to use internal for when you do download TiBu.

Don't get me wrong : it is working. After the reboot, when I install Titanium Backup, the info on the app's main screen show the correct setup. It's just that it is buggy as hell with so many apps (see the op) it becomes a pain to use it.
I think the only way to make it work would be to start scratch : no titanium backup restore, no previous data, etc. But I'm a switcher and I sure won't start ALL over again every time I want to switch back to MotoBlur.
So my question would be : what do other frequent "switchers" between CM7/Blur do to avoid the many bugs ?
I'm also wondering about the other part of my suggestion. Do you select "Internal" as your default app location? Where are the apps that have issues (including TiBu) being installed when you restore them?

I choose "Use Internal Location" but I don't select anything more...
Well, my theory is, depending on where TiBu defaults to (eg. sd-card) when you install it might cause an issue when trying to access it's own files that are on the internal storage. So, depending on where TiBu is being installed might be the cause of the problem??
This is just a total stab in the dark, btw.

I have read many threads about this and try almost everything I have read. So I am sharing what I know works easier, and since the new TF3D2.1 has some issues with PimBackup you may want to easily backup all your information and restore it before flashing your new cool ROM with TF3D2.1
First of, I use Sashimi for backing up my preferences, ringtones, etc... However, even with the previous version of Manila Sashimi cannot restore the pim file, so I always ended up forcing a copy to restore my PIM.vol. Not relevant now since this is a simpler procedure, and automatic.
Regardless of what you use, Sashimi, UC, or nothing. This small SDConfig.txt below and procedure will do the trick.
FIRST: Backing up all your calendar, call history, contacts, and favorites, is as simple as creating a copying of your PIM.VOL file in the root (\) directory of your device and copy the file to a directory in your SD card. For example: \Storage Card\PIM\pim.vol. Once you have that. If you use UC incorporate the following lines of the SDConfig.txt below into your own SDConfig. If you don't all you need is create a simple SDConfig.txt in the root directory of your Storage Card with the following (Assuming you used the same directory structure. Change to where you put yours):
LOCK:Enabled
CPY1: \Storage Card\PIM\pim.vol
CPY2: \pim.vol
LOCK: Disabled
RST: Reset

So the procedure is as follows:
Before you flash your new ROM with TF3D2.1 disableTF3D in the Today screen, and make a copy of the PIM.VOL in your storage (It will allow you to do so without sharing violation errors). I personally use ActiveSync - Explore..., instead of using the File Explorer on the device
Remove your SD card and flash your new ROM as usual
Once the installation is completed. Do a hard reset as recommended. (Read here , if you're unsure)
Once the hard reset procedure completes and you get the prompt to press the "Volume up key to boot". Insert your SD Card into the device and boot
The boot process will start and the ROM will start installing the default software, after that it will look for the SDConfig.txt file you just created. This will make it restore your PIM.VOL and it will soft reset your device once again
Your TF3D2.1 will come up with your favorites, calendar entries, call history, etc... and is all good and working well.
NOTE: This procedure works regardless of your ROM. As long as the ROM supports UC. The cool thing about using Sashimi is that I always have Sashimi make a copy of my PIM.VOL before I am going to flash a new ROM. So that way I make sure the PIM.VOL in my Storage Card\PIM\ is the latest

You wont need PimBackup with this solution. And sorry, it was a typo. It is UC, not CU. I fixed that on the first post. Problem is PimBackup wont work well when you try to restore if you're using TF3D2.1 which could be a major show stopper for many. With this solution you backup everything and restore everything by simply copying the PIM.VOL file. It has to be done this way because if you don't do it at the fresh ROM restore, you'll get a sharing violation error.
Have you had any issues if you then active sync with your computer's outlook? I know with PIMbackup i ended up with the strange situation where my PC thought the restored contacts from PIM were unique, and ended up with doubles. (I even had the computer set as the master to clear everything on the device).

I haven't. It shouldn't at all. Since it is the same PIM.VOL you used before, so synchronization data should be intact if you are faithful to the steps I provided. If your pre-TF3D2.1 was working well, then if you use this procedure you shouldn't have any problems.

just to be sure, PIM.VOL is the output that Pimbackup makes right?
And what is UC?
Also, i named my memory card to 8GB instead of the default "storage card", which means that all my information are stored on a different memory card name.....so if i follow ur method, i.e aftering the hard reset and insert my SD card and boot, it will look for the SDConfig.txt, but the problem is the name of the memory card is different......and even if i edit the SDConfig.txt, i still have to change my memory card name first before i apply ur trick, so what i don't understand is will this only work during the part when the phone installs the default software? Because u said that we have to insert our memory card after the hard reset procedure is complete. And we can only start to install our own softwares after step 5, which means that even if i edit the memory card name to 8GB in the SDConfig.txt, it won't work since the default memory card name is "Storage Card" and hasn't been changed yet.......
And since i can only start to gain control of my fone after step 5, that means i can't install any registry editors straight after the hard reset and therefore can't edit the memory card name........i hope that made sense...

Can anyone assure me that this works with contacts and calendars synced using exchange and google? I really don't want my google contacts and calendar duplicating everything!

I would think that you need to use the same name you used for your card. Test it, I have not done so changing the name of the SC. I've never done it so I cannot tell you if the name doesn't remain with different ROMS. I would think that if it doesn't then you still have to use \Storage Card\ regardless because that's the default name. But you'll have to test and try, then share what you found

Monkey, like every one here will tell you. I cannot assure you anything, we give advise based on things we personally test with our device. Its all in good faith, you need to do your own testing. You read, then you test. If you're not completely sure, then make a full backup of your device, try this, didn't work, go back. I've done this several times and it works. I don't see why you will have issues since the format of the PIM.VOL doesn't change regardless of what you sync with.
I've never played with Sashimi before...dabbled a bit with sdconfig...
Is this just for contacts or does it also backup TF3D2 favs, stocks, weather etc...
man I sure love my cheap (mail2web) exchange solution...definitely worth the $5/month! Add in MyPhone for free and I don't think it gets much better...IMO.
It took me a while to figure out its beauty, but it sure beats messing with all this!

Glad it worked for you. But, "messing with all this"? This is simple and automatic, only have to do it once. Everytime you flash a new ROM there is no-install. What can I say? whatever works for you, works for you!

isn't automatic if you have to spontaneous hard reset, is it? You are stuck with a backup that is how old? yup...the last time you backed it up. How many contacts/appts/tasks, etc did you just lose?
With MyPhone (as the worst case for full backup), you are left with just a 1 day loss...and with my setup using Exchange for mail/appts/tasks on continuous sync, that only includes SMS as a 1 day loss risk. Even if they (mail2web/myphone) have a server failure, I will take that slim chance that it falls on the same day I have to hard reset both my devices that sync that content...

Dude! you can use whatever you like for backups. I posted this workaround for people who will flash another ROM with the TF3D2.1 version. And this is a workaround for the PimBackup issue. You're here debating what solution or not is better for backup/restore. If you apply this workaround then one can use whatever backup/restore solution fits best after the fact.
I am not presenting this as a backup/restore solution strategy. Which means you obviously didn't do your work of reading through the forums and don't know what this is about, so came here to talk nonsense. Get hurt? You came into the thread he created and brang it completely off topic. We know there are other backup solutions, but this was a thread made for those that use PIMbackup and want to use Manila 2.1. As great as apps like myphone are they still have to be setup upon every hard reset which quite frankly, is very annoying. I would rather backup my contacts as normal and have it part of the flashing process. This makes far more sense if you use your own kitchen, as you usually end up flashing more than once. I don't want to have to configure myPhone everytime to make sure contacts are working.
well you know what, my PIM data is a bit more important to me than to use some "hack" just to use TF3D or any other UI. I have gone through all sorts of issues in the past on other devices from creating duplicates of all PIM data to completely wiping it out from following "solutions" posted on forums. I don't need to waste time screwing with or screwing up my PIM data...as it is the heart of my PDA. Without it, I may as well use a Razr. Others may feel the same way and have similar experiences.

I used My Backup Root for stock to Froyo, but this time it seemed as though the apps were on the phone and the card, which cause an error stating that I didn't have enough memory. What should I have done to restore the apps to preserve the memory? I also received force close error for SetCPU, SlideIt (which I love), and a few others.
Also, what is the benefit of partitioning my sd card and does doing so erase it's current contents?
Lastly, are the nightlies a full rom or just part that needs to be flashed? If found some on CMs website, but not here.?

Regarding your nightly question, they are full ROMs...the difference between them is the code that was committed within the previous 24 hours. Of course that also means that, in theory, some of the nightlies could be 100% the same...anyway, the nightlies can be a beautiful thing or a disasterous thing...usually if there's an issue with a nightly it is quickly found by those who flash each nightly and it is brought up around 3.2 million times and it is typically fixed by the next nightly.
Partitioning usually does mean a wipe of data on the SD. Careful!
When I upgraded to a 32GB flash from the stock 2GB from my Aria, I backed up the entire contents and restored on the new one. Apparently there is volume information stored somewhere (not sure where) and the phone couldn't recognize the card and asked me to partition it.
Because I had a backup, I decided to do so, but instead of partitioning for the entire size of the chip, it partitioned only 2GB!
So I had to stick it into a reader and repartition it manually and then selectively restore music, etc back on the card.
After that it worked just fine. So short version: yes it does.

You will need to creaate an sd-ext partition to fix the issue of installing (larger) apps with CM7.
The best way would be through ROM Manager.

Installed the RC2 and can't connect to a hidden SSID wifi network.
That is a known issue with the wifi driver on cm7 thus far. Not sure if it will be corrected though. Anyone else know if it is in the works?

As far as I know there are no plans to change it. But then again we weren't supposed to get fm radio working either...

Great input from everyone. Thanks! Following up on the sd-card partitioning... I have a new 8g card and want to more to CM7. If I partition it, what happens when I restore the backed up app using My Backup Root? And, what is the best partition configuration, why, and what info get store in each section (ext)?

The easiest way to partition is using your ROM manager.
Just select the max size for SD-EXT (I think it would got to 512MB), and none for swap.
I'm not sure if this would have any effect on your backup - I myself started out from scratch and got my apps from the market even though I had made an Astro backup...
You will store all your stuff - music, pictures etc in the normal partition. The SD-EXT will be automatically handled by the phone.
Tried flashing Nightly 22 on my Aria from 17. I spent a lot of time customizing 17. Is there a way to keep all of the old home screens? Also, GPS lock isn't working for me. Using MyBackup Root for Apps, but it seems to duplicate the apps?

I can confirm this works transitioning from 14 to 22 because I just did it yesterday night
As for the GPS problem, thats a known issue - the workaround is to make a nandroid backup of your current cm7, then do a complete phone reset, then do a nandroid restore of cm6 or 6.1 (hope you have one), do another factory reset, and restore your cm7 from the backup you took in the 1st step

first of all, i would never suggest using rom manager for things such as that. historically it has only caused problems and has been more of an inconvenience than anything. second of all, when you boot into CWM and do it the right way, don't wipe data, it's suggested but not necessary that you wipe cache and dalvik, then flash the rom and you'll be good.
Thanks to both of you. Big help and not deleting the data did the trick. Looks like I'm good to go and GPS is working well again. Is there a way to ensure I don't have duplicate apps taking up space on the card and phone? I'm getting errors on moving some apps to the sd card.

Not all apps can be moved to the FAT32 partition on the SD card. Widgets also, won't work properly if moved to the SD FAT32.
If you need more memory, look into (read up) partitioning your sd card with a ext3 partition and installing S2E or Dark Tremor a2sd (DT a2sd).

Oh, I had no idea about that, thanks for the info.
I've been using ROM manager without any problems so far, apart from one lately, that when I reboot to recovery, I always get an error screen - exclamation mark in triangle...but I just pull the battery and reboot into recovery manually and it starts whatever command I had given it (backup/new rom) automatically...
So I am getting ready to install this ROM, or at least try to. Question I have is when it says to " 1) Download update-unnamed-v1.X.X-full.zip and place it on your SD card", what does that mean exactly? Do I need to download it onto my computer and move it to my phone? Or do I download it right onto the phone?
Also, do I need an external SD card installed into the phone or can I just save the zip onto the internal memory?
Sorry for the newbie questions but I am very new to this. You guys were very helpful when I rooted the phone so I figured you would be the ones to ask again this time. Thanks in advance for your help.
Doesn't matter how you download it and it can go on either SD card, internal or external.

when you wipe, you will lose everything on your phone. So make sure your contacts are backed up. If you have them in gmail, then you wont lose them because after flashing the new rom and once you setup your gmail account, your contacts will come back automatically.
Yup, best for every Android user to import all of their contacts into their Google/Gmail account. I manually entered mine into Gmail when I first got an Android phone. It sucked, but since then I haven't had to worry about it. As soon as I flash a ROM and sign in to my Google account my contacts just pop in like magic.

yep. I spent the hour or whatever to manually enter all my contacts. It can take a while depending on how many contacts you have, but it will save you a LOT of time and headaches later on.
Another question for you, what happens to my stock rom when I install UnNamed? Will it still be available to me should I need to switch back?
With my paid apps, will I be able to redownload them for free or am I going to have to pay again? I have titanium backup but since I am wiping the phone wont everything I backed up get wiped too?

Do you currently have CWM installed? If so, you can do a full nandroid backup from recovery of your stock rom if you choose to go back to stock. If not, Entropy has a great thread in the dev section about loading back to stock.
UnNamed will simply become the one and only rom on your phone (which isn't a bad thing) after you flash it, the stock will always get replaced.
As to your paid apps via the Market, they'll be there for you to download again for free. TB is another good option, just make sure that you ONLY choose 'Missing Apps with Data' for any restoring.

Whenever you choose 'Wipe data', all folders on /sdcard (clockworkmod, titaniumbackup, download, etc.) remain there and untouched. Formatting the /sdcard is another story.
Your answer was correct since the storage area where the contact info is stored will in fact get wiped but it kind of makes it sound as though you will lose everything, which is not the case.

If you don't backup the stock rom you will loose it.
To back up the stock rom which you are using now is easy.
Go into CWM Recovery and select "backup/restore"
then select "backup".
OR if you are not sure about CWM recovery you can always do it the easier way.

When ever you see "sdcard" mentioned in any of these posts or replies
people are referring to the internal sdcard unless they specify "external sdcard"
I also found it strange and a little confusing at first but for a different reason,
the reason being is that we really don't have an externel sdcard at all except
for the one which is inside of our phone.
(they are both internal sdcards since both of them reside inside of our phones!)

Yeah. I always refer to the external sd as just that, external or ext.

Hi GTG, is there any way you can implement Aerobahn's mod to skip songs from any app like google music, pandora or any other music app to skip songs with the volume keys?
I found a treath for a SGS2 international version that allows this. Any other sugestions. It would be really convinient when playing music via a bluetooth headset. I promess I'll make a donation.
Is it hard to learn the coding the implement this mod to your ROM?

Alright, I did all the steps and I am pretty sure it worked bc my AOS dropped considerably. However, when I do the pulldown menu there are still only the five options. And when I hold down the power key there are only the three original options that I had in the stock rom. Did I mess something up? The only thing that was a little different from the instructions was when I chose the zip to install it was called "updated" in my menu instead of "update-unnamed-v1.X.X-full.zip" like it says in the instructions.

Sounds like you flashed the wrong file. What does it show for Build Number under 'About Phone' in settings? It should show UnNamed v1.0.4.
Also, you need to swipe the Notification options to the left to see the additional 5 but if you did indeed flash the wrong file, you obviously won't see that.

Sounds like they selected 'apply /sdcard/update.zip' instead of navigating to the proper directory and selecting the actual downloaded file, or 'apply update from sdcard' in the root CWM menu option.

Just go download this "update-unnamed-v1.0.4-full.zip": http://www.multiupload.com/9UTPJDVDZQ
After its downloaded put it on your SDCARD (not inside any folders).
Go into CWM recovery and select "install zip from sdcard" then simply
select the "update-unnamed-v1.0.4-full.zip" in your sdcard and flash.
This way everything will be GOOOOD
unnamed rom is probably the most stable rom out thr.

I updated to DZ's 10A2 from 9 this morning. No problems - except there appear to be broken file links, which I imagine is due to the sdcard renames.
For instance: I can open Google Listen, but none of the podcasts will download and there is an error finding a file at /sdcard/com.google.etc. Also Evernote has no notes in it. Swiftkey can't load a language pack. Gmail and calendar app work fine.
The instructions said coming from 9-10A2 you shouldn't have to wipe data and cache but it hadn't been tested.
So my question's are:
1. Is the problem I'm seeing because I didn't wipe data/cache?
2. Can someone let DZ know that his instructions might need to be updated that going from his 9B1 to 10A2 will probably need a data/cache wipe?

I dont know anything about Google listen since I dont use it. But for Evernote, are you saying the notes you had are not showing up anymore? This could be due to the fact that CM10 is back to the old storage method. CM9 had the flip flop mod in there that made you external card show as the Internal storage so we had more storage space for internal storage. So if your notes were saved on the internal storage on CM9, which was actually your external card, you may have to move them back to the internal storage. You can find everything on CM10 in storage/sdcard0 (for internal) and sdcard1 (for external)
EDIT: And I dont know where you read you shouldnt have to wipe data and cache. Its ALWAYS a good idea to wipe everything when coming from one ROM to another.

Thanks. Looks like I'll just wipe. It's just a pain to reinstall all those apps and get my phone screens setup the way I like.

This can be installed over CM7/CM9 or BLUR but you MUST wipe data and cache if from CM7/BLUR. (CM9 should work w/o wipe, but it's untested).
I know it's always a good idea to wipe, but I was hoping I could get away with it. The phone works okay, it's just some apps that aren't finding their data. Not a big deal.
Titanium Backup is the best way to get all your apps back with their data. Thats what I use and dont lose any data when I go to a new ROM or SBF.

I've used it before, but it seems like every time I read flash instructions they say: "Don't use TiBu" to restore from a previous ROM!
It looks like it would have been okay this time - so lesson learned - might as well use it just in case.
Are there particular things you should/should not backup in prep for a new ROM? Just wondering.

Apps and app data are fine to restore. SYSTEM data is what causes problems. Don't bother with system data.

The wipe seems to have fixed all but Listen, which I guess is a lost cause. I remember a couple of times when a download would foobar and it was just screwed forever. No way to really clear it. Apparently it's not supported since August anyway so using a different program.
Hi guys, I am running cm10.1.3RC2 (so my device is rooted) and I want to utilize my 32gb SD card. Does anyone know how I can move apps to my sd card?
Also, does anyone know a safe way to re partition my internal HD so I can free up the 8.xgb of data that touchwiz used that I no longer will?

I would suggest buying and download Titanium Backup, an EXTREMELY useful app for more than just what you are asking for. With this app you can move them as easy as this! There are also several free apps that should do just what you are asking: AppMgr III, App2SD, Apps 2 SD. If you use any of those, be sure to read their instructions as the first of those three requires the SGS4 to be updated to the latest ROM first (which I don't think you want to do).
Here is a list of bloatware you can delete to free up some space. Some may take up next-to-nothing, but others may be taking up quite-a-bit. Notice that they are using Titanium Backup to make a backup first, just in case you delete something you wanted to keep or need.
You can also find ROMs like AOSP ROMs, which should help in recovering a lot of that space. But be sure to research, there are always things to take note of (i.e. many people believe the TW ROM has a better quality camera than the AOSP ROMs).

Thanks for the advice! I downloaded app2sd and it says my phone is not supported. Additionally, with the flashing of the CM10.1.3RC2, I deleted all bloat ware, but still only have 9gb available.
When I follow the directions regarding moving to sd from titanium, when I clock backup/restore, no apps show up. I am using the pro version (the free version, not the pay-for version), could that be the issue?

I use "folder mount" as a way to move folders from my device to my sd card. I bought the app.
I'm not real sure if tibu can move them. But, to find out, go into preferences, scroll down to backup folder location and click on it. See where it has your back ups going to. If it is not to your external sd card, see if you can create a path to it. I'm not sure if it will or not, but look at it and see. Other than those two suggestions, I guess you can take the ota update as that is supposed to let you move things to the sd card, I think.

I believe you need the paid version to do most of the useful things on Titanium Backup, I was never ever to accomplish anything with the free version.
You could try gimpy's suggestion of Folder Mount.
Nandroid Manager may let you do something in their free version, not sure though.
You can also try this method, but this will just make sure everything from then on will go onto your SD card (which will act like internal memory).

RootExplorer is free and you can move and rename any folder. I would use this over folder mount just in my opinion. Easy to find your apps and move them right to your extsd card. But there are a ton of options. And for what your talking about on Titanium you have to have the pro version free doesn't let you.
