i haven't rooted pohone, everything is on the stock firmware, but yesterday my SGS2 lost signal. Now is there still no service icon, imei is blank, baseband unknown.
Stock firmware version are:
pda: I9100xxki4
phone: unknown (was I9100xxki4)
csc: I9100XAKI4
I found, it is efs directory problem, but i have not root, so i can't access it.
It is possible to repair it myself? If yes, which stock room i have to choose to fit best for my phone? I tried through samsung kies software, but it couldn't detect my phone (still connecting).

Sounds like messed efs folder but I can just think how in hell that hapened. But you haven't backup of that. Pretty much you can just take it to samsung retail seller or someone who can do JTAG repairs

last things i done was: installed osmos hd (game, it wants only internet permission), and send few sms ... after few minutes i saw that the singal was out
If you haven't messed with/flashed anything on your phone & this is happening with stock firmware, take it back to have it repaired/replaced.
If you haven't been mucking around with it, you shouldn't have any dramas with warranty service. If you do go down the path of rooting the phone/trying to fix it yourself, you may well bork it so badly you need to return it anyway & you may end up with a lesser or no chance of getting warranty service.
If it were me, I wouldn't risk it.
Some report fix with KTool.

My phone is F&^%ed.
Its completely missing the efs folder. Its empty. (Yes its been rooted and files unhidden). There is nothing there.
I was to return it to warranty state and send it back to samsung.
How can I do this so the warranty isn't void?
Are there any particular files I need to remove? Won't there be logs and they can see what's been going on with the phone?
I've got copies if the stock rom and supposedly the stock kernal.
When I do *#1234# I get

Get firmware for your country/carrier here, if you can't find it/if link is dead/if it isn't listed, do a search on here for Checkfus & you'll be able to download the latest firmware for your phone/carrier/country that you'd normally get via Kies.
Flash firmware in Odin, do a factory reset/make sure there are no apps left on the phone that could tip off whomever fixes it that you've been messing with it, jig it to reset the flash counter (if the jig doesn't work, flash the old bootloader from here in the PDA or Bootloader section of Odin, then the jig should work).
Getting warranty service after you've run non-stock firmware on the phone is never 100% certain after you've voided the warranty by doing same. But if you do the above, you will probably (not definitely) get warranty service.
If you're after 100% chance of warranty service, don't mess with your phone in the first place.
Done.
Return to your telco/Samsung.

The only reason I ever rooted the phone is because they refused to fix it under warranty due to a cracked screen.
After unlocking my phone with the code that 3 gave me, it stopped working. (No imei)
I send it back to be fixed and as there was a minor crack in the screen they wanted that fixed first.
So I did some research and realised what the problem was.
Apparently its common for a phone unlock to damage the efs.
And that's when I discovered rooting Never heard of it before. So it was not me mucking around with the phone that damaged the efs folder.
It took me a few weeks to realise that I'm never getting this fixed by myself so I've contacted the TIO about getting it fixed under warranty. From what I understand even Samsung cant repair a damaged efs. So they would probably just replace the phone.
I think its unfair that they want to charge me $250 for a screen that they have no intention of repairing, that I don't even want repaired, and is completely unrelated to the real problem.
I have a question. I've done a factory reset but 2 apps are still there. Superuser and clockwork, why weren't they deleted?

Why would they be deleted if they are part of the firmware on the phone .
Follow the instructions flash stock rom to remove root .

Firmware cannot be original if you have rooted or installed root and cwm .
Factory reset = a restore of the firmware last flashed on the phone .

Ok its stock. Its supposedly the stock rom that came with the phone. I didn't know that superuser came with the stock rom.

I'm going to send my Galaxy S2 in for repairs but I need to un-root it first.
I'm searching for the official Vodafone Australia kernel DUKJ1

The kernel is there but because multiupload is down I cannot download it. I have tried Check Fus downloader but it does not have DUKJ1. Is there any other way I can get the kernel?
Also do I even need to un-root it as I have used the usb jig to reset the binary counter?
Um, actually, Checkfus does have KJ1 for Voda AU. This is the most recent firmware available for Voda AU via Kies (I just checked this with my own copy of Checkfus).
Download the entire rom and extract the kernel zImage.
If you leave a rooted kernel on it & whomever repairs the phone notices this, there's a fair chance your warranty will be deemed to have been voided. Frankly, you might as well flash the entire KJ1 rom package from Checkfus (for all whomever repairs it knows, you probably updated OTA via Kies), then do a factory reset then double check to make sure there's no trace of any apps that required root left on the phone.
Then jig it again just to be doubly sure.
Then done. Send it in for warranty service.

2.1. Android/I9100T/Australia (Vodafone). Tells you original firmware was KF2, then hit check firmware. Tells you KJ1 is latest released on 8/11/2011.
Are you sure you're using the PC version & not the phone app ?

I got it working, thanks alot.
To re jig it I flashed the old bootloader, should I re flash the new bootloader or leave the old one?
No worries
Unless you have a specific reason for flashing the new bootloader (I.E. something not working without it), leave it. The less you mess around with bootloaders the better.

The reasons I planned on sending the phone in for repair/replacement were that is would turn on and off by itself sometimes, would open voice talk by itself almost constantly and would make the charging 'beep' noise when not plugged in.
Since unrooting none of these problems have happened again, should I still send it in for repair/replacement? Why would unrooting fix these problems?
Hard to say. Was the phone just rooted, or were you running a custom rom ? If the latter it may have been something in the rom causing the issues.
Up to you. Maybe run it for a week or two (or whatever) & see how it goes. You've unrooted it, you can jig it if you haven't already & send it in for warranty service whenever you like.
Obviously jigging it & going back to stock is never a guarantee of warranty service (given you've voided the warranty by rooting it in the first place), but most people who have done this have been fine so far as warranty service is concerned. I have seen a few exceptions over the past few months on here, but it's hard to say whether those people followed all the steps before sending it in or not.

No idea. That's entirely up to them. But unlikely to replace outside the first few weeks unless the phone was unfixable if previous experiences on here are anything to go by.

Any proper guide to be done before send to repair?.. i've just sent my phone to service today. Battery temperature warning problem. Re-flash stock rom with stock kernel. Everything goes back like factory settings
Just the usual steps I.E. flash stock firmware, do a wipe/factory reset, use jig to reset the flash counter, double check that the reset worked & there are no traces of old apps on the phone which required root that could tip off whomever fixes the phone that you'd rooted it. Some say you should first (while the phone is still rooted) go into CWRecovery and format cache, data, system, & sd card. Then flash stock firmware and then use the jig. Depends on how paranoid you are I guess.
As I said to the previous poster, there are no guarantees of warranty service after you root or flash non-stock firmware on your phone (you shouldn't expect same), however if you follow these steps you should get warranty service. But there are always exceptions.

Sorry if you've already this on another thread as I tried to edit title and messed it up.
I'll start with journey and hopefully build up some empathy
14 Dec - Phone died
17 Dec - Repair shop said water damage - didn't believe them but couldn't disprove it
10 January - Finally get it back and £150 worse off after mainboard was changed.
Decide to flash it straight away and get updated to Jellybean did the following
1: Used samsung galaxy toolkit to root device
2: created a cwm backup
3: flashed a jelly bean rom (Omega)
4: then sim would not register on network
I've restored my phone to the original cmw backup but still does not work
My imei matches the imei under the battery and the serial number does not read 0000... in the about phone section it starts 4v1c51...I've also tried flashing modem
Now foolishly i backed my efs folder up before my mainboard was changed, but have not backed it up since i got it repaired. Does this make a difference.
I've been so looking forward to getting my phone back and now I can't even use it ....
I've flashed it back to stock at the moment using my cmw backup and not really sure what to do.
Phone is a i9300 bought from carphone warehouse on Vodafone contract.

I suggest you flash a stock rom via Odin for your region .Or even one for your network .

I think u screwed ur imei and serial number.. Only thing u can do is to claim ur warranty cuz now ur device isnt a phone

Hey, thanks for the reply. I thought the same, but imei and serial number were still present in device status. Fortunately, I found a post about a modem patch and whilst the apk didn't work, someone had created a flashable zip file and that worked beautifully. I'm now running a jellybean rom and can make and receive calls. It's a terrible feeling when you think you have bricked your phone - thankfully i am all sorted and can leave it be now

WHAT I'M TRYING TO DO:
I am not trying to root this phone (YET!), I am just trying to use Kies to upgrade to JB.
All the 'legal information' in the Settings menu is 'greyed out'. I cannot select, or update OTA.
I will probably get to the CM / custom ROMs sometime but for now I just thought I'd do a simple (I thought) easy upgrade to JB.
Kies recognises the phone, suggests I do a back-up (which I did), and then attempts to download a 3000mb install package. At this point, it throws up a dialog box showing a bunch of 'square characters' - the kind of thing you see if you don't have a language installed on your OS. (which is XP by the way).
It's an error for sure, as after closing it (OK is the only option), the download process loops as it asks me again 'do I want to backup before upgrade'. So I'm getting nowhere.
I'm not sure why Kies has such a problem with my phone.
If it's any use, I can say that this was bought brand-new, unlocked, from a retailer website, though upon boot it displays an Orange logo, and certain parts of the menus (although very few) were in French by default. I've registered the phone with Samsung on their site successfully so that's fine. I put in a QUERY for them to help but it's been over a month and nothing back so far.
So I thought I would come to the expert village and see if I can get some help.
-I'm hoping it's okay to ask about Official updating here and not completely boring ( ! ) as I'm aware this is a land of great rootery and customisation! which I think is great by the way :good:

Have a look in the stickies about how to use ODIN (its not difficult to use).
Then, I would advise you flash the latest official Samsung firmware from here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1646610
Ensure you follow the ODIN instructions properly and make sure Kies isn't running when you use ODIN.
This will get you onto the latest version of JB to be released by Samsung...

Thanks for the reply, while I'm quite happy to use some ODIN to do this (I don't mind a learning curve), I'm just a bit put off by the disclaimer "Using ODIN can change your bootloader to show that the system is MODIFIED and may increase your ODIN flash count. This may void your Warrenty".
-my phone is still under warranty and I would rather avoid breaking the warranty if at all possible.
Are there any other options?

I wouldn't worry about that tbh.
As your phone hasn't been rooted it shouldn't be an issue.
Also, there are ways to change the system flag back to 'official' using Triangle Away but I don't think you'll need to.

I'm going to use ODIN to update to Samsung's official I9300XXEMD2_I9300OXXEMD1_I9300XXEMC2_XEO.zip ROM.
I'm already using the Stock ICS which came with the phone (brand new, but unlocked). So essentially I'll just be updating to a new version of an official ROM from Samsung.
I have already taken steps using KIES, to backup the call logs, SMS's, contacts, and APPS.
These are all items which are stored on the internal 16GB (I believe) please correct me if I'm wrong?
I would like to ask:
1) Will this ODIN flashing process effect any data on my external SD card? (I obviously don't want to lose any of it)
2) And, will I be able to use KIES afterwards, to return all my old data (ie app settings, the APPS themselves, call logs, SMS's, contacts etc) to the phone's 16GB memory?

The ODIN process doesn't wipe your phone as far as I can remember so everything should still be there (downloaded apps, SMS, call log etc).
Hopefully someone else can clarify this who has used it recently...

I haven't gotten round to doing the update yet.. and considering just hanging on until samsung release their official 'non-leaked' JB s3 update.

usual reason is a mismatch in the phone codes shown to KIES .
Orange logo means its an Orange phone and based upon the OP i would suggest that its an Orange France phone originally . It may have had firmware modifications or been a return phone or even a grey import .That would explain wrong codes no update path .

Are you saying Kies is expecting a certain code from the phone?
(Presumably derived from its serial number or something) - I don't know what a 'phone code' is.
I never had a doubt this phone has been messed with.
Presumably then.. the warranty might have been void (technically) since the day I bought it.

If you have a mismatch in the Phone and CSC Kies will tell you that you can't update when you connect it as its trying to update that wont be the problem.
Your baseband and build are defiantly Orange so you need to flash the latest Orange France version to keep warranty but would guess that if it doesn't have Orange bloatware on it then at some point its been rooted and the bloatware wiped, in which case you want have a warranty
The latest France Orange firmware is phone I9300XELLA csc I9300FTMELL1 from sammobile site but if you want non branded then you need Open Europe OXA or UK & Europe BTU, the one you mention XEO is Poland although it will work for you its not really the one you want but the choice is yours.
You don't need a rooted phone to use Odin but any update will increase your flash count you can zero this by using triangle away from XDA if you want.
EDIT :- Just noticed in your first post the version is from May 2012 that you currently have so is this phone previously used.

Again, I'm with problems with my S3 since the one time decided to test a custom ROM which turned out to screw my IMEI and got to it back working with BOX in repair service.
I n order to see if the BOX fix did actually solve my signal problem, it was suggested to me in a previous post that I flash the same stock rom via ODIN. Before that, I backed up current EFS as well.
Unfortunately, it seems the problem wasn't entirely solved. Same as before: both my IMEI and S/N are untouched (S/N does not coincide with S/N in the back of phone) and though it says I have a full signal, I'm not registered in network and i can't make or receive calls, sms, etc. Even though I restored the EFS folder, nothing happens.
I really wish not to go back to repair service again. What else can I do about this? Many thanks and excuse my rant. Hope I was thorough and clear on the problem. I also have a EFSv2_basebands_opt4.zip file I downloaded somewhere in xda . Would that help?

I would still like to solve the problem at its roots: to fix the "not registered in network" problem whenever factory reset or stock ROM flash via odin is done. That is simply not normal. I might be selling the phone soon and the new user won't most probably know he/she would have to apply a patched kernel or etc.. ( let alone about rooting the phone).
Basically, bring the phone back to it's original sound state before I tried out the custom ROM. What can I do about that?
Hope I'm not being annoying.. just trying to get to the bottom of things

There is nothing you can do without your original efs backup.Only a service repair can fix it.

Understood. I think I have the original EFS in my SD, though I tried replacing it once and it didn't work out... I suppose I'll have to make do. Thanks for everything man
Flashing modem with Ariza patch was bad idea. Your efs folder is screwed up now and you are addicted to constantly flash this dirty workaround.
If anyone have problems with registering in network please check your device serial number first. It must be the same as on the sticker under battery. If it's not then type *#0011# and check info under IMEI CERT. If there is FAIL info then you should use any box ie Z3X to correct phone's serial number. It takes only few minutes and is cheap. It's better long-term way than patching and permanently destroying your efs informations.
If you have backup then you should flash normal modem and restore original efs partition. Then find any GSM service center with box and tell them to fix serial number. It shouldn't cost more then 5-10 dollars.

I have never flashed the Ariza patch nor have I even mentioned it on my previous posts explaining the problem. Fixing the s/n issue is indeed adviseable, but paying to correct s/n using box here where I live is ASTRONOMICALLY expensive. They should answer for never having fixed it, but they won't. Here is a hell of a lot more than 5-10 dollars, unfortunately.
Believe me , I'm no happier in applying this sorry fix every time I want to factory reset or upgrade, etc; it's the only option I have left at the moment.
Those files you have flashed, I mean kernel and modem are patched with Ariza's method. It is called Ariza patch and it is latest solution you should take to resurrect your phone because it is a destructive one.
Sorry to hear that you can't repair it as it should be especially if you want to sell this device.

hi i was wondering if you guys can help me,i have your problem but i have an efs backup,but i cant seem to be able to restore my imei,i tried Ktool,efs professional,nothing seems to work,i should mention that the efs backup was from a Samsung 4.1.2 stock now my phone is on CM11

May i ask a few questions about your problem?
Which version were you using when you desided to use a custom rom?
Was your phone ever rooted before installing a custom rom (when you were on official)
Did you upgrade your phone before? (Official via ota or odin)

I was on 4.2.2 leaked version ROM some guy installed at a repair service some time ago when the phone belonged to my mother. I was actually rooted using the CF AutoRoot method, with Philz CWM recovery. I decided to change to a custom 4.3 without having changed first to a stock 4.3.
The problem came when, within the custom ROM's aroma installer, I ticked an option to upgrade the modem to some build I can't remember now and my signal became screwed up. I informed this in the developer's custom rom discussion thread about the issue to which he replied that the problem was that the EFS folder tried to convert from v1 to v2 and failed (this was when I learned of the whole efs version folder change since build XXX (don't remember).
I download a stock unbranded 4.3 ROM and flashed it via ODIN, believing that would solve the issue; it didn't. Finally, I became desperate and took it to a repair service where they used box. Apparently, late did I notice s/n was not the same as the one in the back of phone. I'm guessing that would solve the problem? I don't know.
i am sorry for your loss . i wish you had all that info you learned before a try and fail. now that your imei number is a clon number, and once a box tempers with that you cant go back even if you have your orijinal efs folder or backup. you should always have that 2 patched modem and kernel files on your sd card just incase. you can use custom 4.3 with the patched files and get a signal but you will always have some lags after some time because of the kernel. and lucky you samsung stopped updating s3 officially because patched files are only for 4.3. if you dont have a desire to use custom 4.4.4 kitkat roms then you are good to go and when it comes to sell the device, the price will be much lower then an original s3.

Well, actually, IMEI didn't get cloned; of that I'm certain. IMEI is just the same as it was before I took it for the first time to repair service. It was the S/N that got changed somehow. Should I get them to correct the S/N, and use the original EFS folder (I found it, i think), would that correct all problems?
S/N number is the same with imei number as when you dial *#06# . And as i said before you cant go back even if you have your original efs folder. Dial *#06# and check your imei number from an " imei check site " you can find on google search. That will tell you what i mean.
There are: IMEI, device serial number and Android serial number. First two numbers are on the sticker in battery Bay. They must be correct because are used to authorize IMEI certificate.
Samsung's IMEI begins from 35.....
Serial number usually from RF......
If you see serial number in HEX format in phone's info section, something like f1abcadef1.. than it is android not device serial number and this mean troubles with authorize SIM card in operator network, even if it shows proper signal power.
I don't know there is any secret code to display serial number but there is plenty of phone's info apps in playstore which displays this alphanumeric string.
