Passwrod locking mobile data? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Does anyone know of an app that can password lock mobile data?
Basically my brother's mates racked up a $100 data bill using youtube so I would like to disable mobile data and lock it with a password or similar, I would just change the APN but I'm sure they could figure that one out.
Thanks in advance.

Ring the carrier? Otherwise no

Why not lock the entire phone with a good pattern screen lock?

Search for "App Lock" on market you can password protect apps you don't want people to have access to.

uninstall lock

i have a very playful friend and she keeps uninstalling apps on my X8, is there a privacy lock that asks for a pin before installing? any help would be appreciated it
If you go to Settings > Location & security you'll find the 'unlock pattern' setting, where you can set a patern you need to enter every time you unlock the phone.
I would've prefered just a normal pin, but whatever..
Edit: Oh sorry, I didn't read the OP properly. No, I don't know of such a privacy lock. Does Android have 'parental tools'?
try to check this

or maybe something similar, but better advice is not to share your phone with playful friends

I hope the first thing you did was call your banks 24 hour customer service line.....??????
And yes if your web access password for banking is the same as your android apps change it....

Usually banking apps don't store passwords. But if you use the same pass as you do elsewhere, change them and call your bank to give them a heads up so they can monitor the account and alert you of suspicious activity.

thanks! Just called the bank and changed pw to be safe. Should I change my gmail password as well?
by the way it was almost (not really) funny to see my phone move farther and farther away from me in Latitude. That was the first thing I looked at when I realized it was missing.
Yes, change that as well as your google password is definitely stored on your phone.
And on your next phone get Lookout Mobile Security. You can track your phone, make it scream (loud noise to find it, even if its on silent) and remotely wipe the phone.

+1, and recently police in different cities across the states have used Lookout Location Services to track the theif and arrest them, returning the android phone to its rightful owner.
Thanks for all the help
Update: A good samaritan called, she found my phone and wanted to return it. So we setup up a time and place. The funny thing is when I got home my replacement phone was in the doorway! Now I have two phones!!
I then called t-moble to ask what to do next. I cant beleive what they told me, "Just keep the phone!" She had do make sure they were not monitoring the phone for activity, but after that she transfered the phone to my neice's number and gave me a free monts internet!!!
I cant beleive my luck!! And my neice is all smiles
steps I took after losing the phone
1) Checked google latitude on pc and saw my phone moving farther and farther away
2) Called t-mobile. They canceld the sim and reissued a new sim. But latitude nolonger updated the phones position.
3) Changed my google pw
4) Changed all other personal pw's

Rooting a Samsung GT10.1 with Touchwiz update - Why would I want or need?

So with the new Touchwiz Update, why would someone need or want to root their SGT10.1? Before my only big reason was for screen shots and some apps that offer shutdown option softbuttons. But with Touchwiz you get a screen shot function. What functions would you want that would require rooting?

easy, I want the bar at the bottom to be black again and the settings panel (wi-fi toggle, airplane mode toggle to be blue not green) to name a few.
i think installing LBE Privacy Guard is an excellent reason to root.
Does that app keep apps from trolling your data and selling it? I've used lookout before. It works pretty well but who knows if its working. Lol

LBE actually monitors your data and presents you with an alert every time an app tries to access it. The alert allows you to approve or deny the access. That way if a video player app randomly starts trying to access your contacts you a) know about it and b) can deny it.
I haven't rooted my GT yet but I've used LBE on a Transformer when I had it. It was great because i could deny apps accessing my data when they had no reason to do so. If I root, LBE and AdFree would be the two of the main reasons for doing so.
Adfree and Titanium Backup are my main reasons.
I have not looked at the steps in a while. But seems like my biggest obstacle is I have nothing but Mac OS so I cant use most of the tethered and app centric methods. Wish there was an app in the market to help you root without being tethered. That would be worth some bucks! Lol

[Q] Stop Background Data without Disabling Data

I am currently roaming in roaming in the U.S. at quite high prices. I want to use my phone to get notified of new e-mails, whatsapps, and facebook messages. However, because roaming rates are quite high, I want to make sure my phone doesn't use any other background data. For example, updating weather widget (w/o my manual refreshing), or checking my apps for updates. Especially checking for app updates is a huge waste of data. I tried disabling the update notifications in play store, but it still seems to check because when I go to "my apps" it already knows which of my apps are out of date.
Is there an app that will only let selected apps access my data?

If your phone is rooted you can take the app "LBE Privacy Guard" from play store. With the app you can set the permissions for all your apps.
regards
Thanks! I am using LBE Privacy Guard now but Android is still eating away at my data. I disabled 2G/3G data usage for all apps except Whatsapp and Gmail. in thee Firewall section I can see how much data my apps are using. Over the last 3 hours Whatsapp has used 5kb and gmail has used 122 kb, according to LBE no other app has used any data, yet it shows that I have used 372 kb over the last few hours. At $1 per MB on roaming I will be spending about $1.50 a day at this rate even if I do not send or receive any messages. This is too much data usage for background apps I am not using. And when I am roaming on Y-mobile my charges go up to $16 per MB, which would really be too expensive. And unfortunately there are no SIM cards in USA that you can just buy for prepaid for a few days.
Have you disable "background data" and "auto sync" under settings on your phone?
regards
originally I didn't because then i figured it won't check my whatsapp messages anymore. But I tried it just to see what would happen. I have now disables EVERY app to use internet and turned off syncing. I still used 832 kb of data in the last 12 hours.
Google should really work on this. I wish they had a feedback line. How can they make it possible to turn data off, but not make it possible to limit my data use when data is turned on?
As much as I travel, this is a dealbreaker for me. does anyone here have an iPhone and can confirm if data can be completely controlled on it?

If you're rooted, install Avast Anti-Virus. It provides a nice firewall. It supports different sets of firewall rules based on Wi-Fi, Home data, Roaming data.
By default, its in "Deny Selected" mode. Just, switch to "Allow Selected" mode and allow those apps in Roaming column.

This has got to be the funniest statement ever, iPhone has no flexibility. Turn on WiFi and data turns off. Turn off WiFi and data turns on.
There is no way you can make it so it restricts certain apps.

This works great. I have firewall all google apps. when I try to go to the store it tells me no services. How about services that are not an app?

You'll have to hunt down that by yourself. Google that or ask here..
Have you tried droidwall ?
It can enable/disable data connection (wifi and or 3g) for each app and service individually.

Hey I am not sure what that means. In EL29 i was able to stop background days in one of the set up options. In FF18 that option I'd no longer available.
That's all

Security idea?

Hi people;
I just wanna point out am idea abt security of device. Is that possibile to add an counter to pin login screen to count back unsuccessful login attempts? Actually an add-on to pin login security to enhance general device security. As been on BlackBerry devices. After an settled number of login attempts device could block it self or better to wipe device to factory settings?
Just an idea just came out from an necessity.
Thanks.

I think that's a wonderful idea. Go forth and develop it my friend. Hey, why not use Kickstarter to gain funding?
****Non of this is of any importance. Just chill the f**k out and relax****

Just install programs like Cerberus, They have much better features then this.
Cerberus or other prg's made to work on after stolen. This improvement is as a first defence for data security. All other scenarios can fail after device stolen. Cerberus only takes pictures what will i do with pic.of thief after its stolen and what if thief is after my data not my device.

Dude, you have absolutely no idea what your talking about and obviously havent even used the app or web service or any other of the many same type apps.
You can manually OR automatically wipe data on internal or external card, lock device, get GPS location, take pictures, videos, sound recordings, display messages, send sms, make it scream. etc etc etc. You can automate these actions in various scenarios from wrong unlock codes, new sim card inserted etc. You can also hide the app or install as system app so they can uninstall even if wiped. Only way to get rid is install new rom, but majority of people who would find/steal phone wouldnt have a clue flashing roms was even possible.
Your idea is and already has been used in various security apps for long time.
