How can i use whatsapp on transformer prime ??
Sent from my Transformer Prime TF201 using Tapatalk
I had a quick look and it wasn't in the market when using the TP. From what I remember it requires you to add a telephone number when installing so requires a phone/3g element.

bump bump, great question! wondering the same thing too and hope there can be a solution soon...
This is what I did when I used WhatsApp on my Prime (Don't do it any more, but used to work fine).
Download & Set it up on your phone, so you can log in and chat etc etc (make sure everything works as its supposed to), then back it up with Titanium Backup, and transfer the files to your Prime, Titanium backup again to restore it, and voila.
I personally used Titanium Backup Dropbox sync to get the backup files from my phone to Dropbox, and then just manually downloaded them to my prime and put them in the right folder.
Would probably be good to do a reboot after you restored the app on your Prime, to make sure it's working as intended

Exactly! I been using whatsapp on prime since I bought it. One thing though, if you receive msg on prime, you won't see it in your phone and vice versa. And when both devices are connected to net, you never know which device will get the msg. Totally random so far.

Hi everyone!
Is there a way to make Whatsapp usable on our device? It gives me an error saying "not supported on tablets".
I already googled a bit but found no workaround, anyone got a tip for me?
regards
banane
There may be a workaround, but I think Whatsapp requires a phone number, therefore only works on phones.
I have been able to get this to work but I cant add any more
contacts. The contact list here just wont update my google contacts.
I had a galaxy tab. So I just used titanium back up. Made a back up copy
of whatsapp and put it in the sd card. Moved the sd card and used titanium
back up to restore whatsapp. It worked but I cant add any new contacts.
nice, thank you. I´ll give that a try!
i already tried to copy the databases from my phone so it wouldn´t check for the device type but that didn´t work :/
I´ll report back
Thank you BryanSo it worked!
Maybe its worth noting that one should delete the whatsapp folder on the sdcard and reboot the device after uninstalling whatsapp (if you tried before like me).
have you been able to update your contacts?
unfortunately not
Ah well same problem I guess. I least its working.
How do you backup and restore the app? I tried with titanium backup but when it was restoring on the noon it started but then appeared to hang. Any suggestions, chaps?

I haven't android phone, how can do this done?
Thanks.
Hmm i couldnt get it to work via installing any .apk, i would upload you my titanium backup but then you would only have my contacts and that would not be that good :/
I tried several methods to get it to work without backing it up and restoring it from an other android device but none of them worked.
Maybe one could try to edit the contacts database (data/data/com.whatsapp/databases/wa_contacts.db) via commandline. Otherwise you would need an Android device that has your contacts to backup from.
I´m on holiday at the moment so you´d have to try it yourself or wait until thursday next week.

Thanks for your help. Wishing you a Beautiful Holiday Season.
So, can someone post the apk or backup from titanium, I don't know, is there ay way to get this to work for the community?
I have no idea how to make it for community. Because during activation you need your phone number to be there. What i did for my wife NT is
- on SGT with simA ti backup my whatsapp, then move it somewhere else.
- uninstall whatsapp on SGT (just to deregister)
- change to simB, reinstall whatsapp, and activate whatsapp with simB
- tibackup, copy app+data to NT
- restore in NT
- cleanup SGT and put back simA along with its whatsapp app+data
And now i can whatsapp SGT-NT with my wife using my and her own number.
Drawback is my whatsapp contact get carried along to my wife's, hence i said i cant make a community shared apk.
but as long as she can still populate her own whatsapp contact it doesnt matter.
She uses go contacts btw.
LINE is applicable in the same manner.
If you want easier, use VIBER. Activation by sms doesnt need to be in same device.
Too bad mic audio routing needs to be fixed first, otherwise i can call my wife for free on VIBER.
. . . i use xda app for gtab. . .
hi guys
Just heared some news about whatsapp. They say it is possible to run and let whatsapp work on the prime witout fonecard
Seems to work with copy some files from a rooted fone inmycase htc sensation.
Since i use most of times whats app would be a nice thing.
Also a remark hen installed whatsapp on the htc with a dutch fone card and went to china whatsapp say working under the dutch number al the time. Probably whatsapp onlylook to the number for first time install. And when change card allkeeps working.............
Has someone solutions for this rumour. And howh about the contacts?
Thnx in advance
That would be nice if there is an opinion to get whattsapp working on the prime
Sent from my Transformer Prime TF201 using Tapatalk
yeah would bevery nice but must be a trick when iitial instalation and copy and paste some files from the fone as i heared but have no idea how to do it.
I've read that someone has got it to work by backing up Whatsapp from their phone using Titanium Backup then just restoring it on their tablet (not a TF201 but in theory it shouldn't matter).
Obviously this would require that both phone and tablet are rooted.
Can this be tested by someone?
Sent from my Transformer Prime TF201 using Tapatalk
I did it with Titanium but have no one to test it with.
i can give it a try. Have a htc sensation.
And the prime
did a back up from whatsapp with titanium on my htc.
Found 3 files-
In de titanium backup folder.
1. Com.whatsapp with a number.properties
2. Com.whatsapp witth a number.star.gz
3. Com.whatsapp with a number.apk.gz
Put the files in dropbox andere put them in the titaniumbackup folder on prime.
Titanium see the backup but when try to set it back half way super user is refused when try set back the data
Also when try set back data only superuser get refused.
Set back the program works oke.
I tryed to make a back up from the not working whatsapp and used those numbers to change the gz files from the sensation and gave them the same number. Also here it say super user refused.............
Maybe do something wrong? It keeps coming cant find unique identification code?when start up whatsapp!!!!
The problem seems how set the data or we need another trick.
Any other smart ideas?
Whats next?
Doesn't it whinge if you try to run it over two devices though? I tried running it on my Galaxy S2 and a Windows 7 Phone, telling me I had to uninstall and reinstall it on my S2 for it to work properly again.
well it works on the htc fine but cant get it working on the prime!!!!!!
So have no clue for next idea to try.........
got it working!!!!!!
Well finaly got it working.
Like told above make a back up with titanium from running whatsapp from ur rooted android fone
Upload to dropbox
Get it down on prime
Install whats app on ur prime
And make a back up with titanium
Write down the numbers of the gz file.
Delete the back up gz files from theprime back up and put the changed files in the titatium back up folder.
Then set back up back.
In my posting above it not worked because i forgot to restart the prime!!!!!!!
After restart it start working when my gf send me whatsappssssssss
It seems wich used the last prime or fone is the master......
Still testing.
So both devices need root. I will Test this in an hour and post what happend
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
works oke but in my case only few whatsappcontacts are in it. Not all wich are i to my fone.
So seems needs some more experiments.
Also seems when send messages from one fone or the rime one of them takes over although i had miments when testing both rcieve messages same time.
For now only few contacts are in the prime. Not know hownti het more contacts in it from the fone.
Deffenitly whatsaap not refer to the fone card but to the number of the gz files
Hope some smarter guys will find out more
Grtz
It works but i don't have any Contacts
well just found out out you can put in new contactsyourself.....
contacts
Did some tests with contacts.
When set back the data with titanium all contacts are visible for a few seconds when start up whatsapp.
After few seconds only about 10 15 contacts are left cant find the answer on this.
Someone knows?
On the other hand when i do a testbwith my other phone number which has whatsapp, de number comes in on the prima and i can ad it by hold on the number into the whatsapp contacts with a name.
So its possible ad contacts but have to wait untill someone sends you a message. For the rest i tested it for few days now and it works perfect.
Hope someon has a bright idea to ad contacts without wait untill someone send a message to you.
Also sometimes get the whatsapp message on both fone and prime but in general on wich i am typing the messages come in.
Some people like to do some testing with me? Or can find out more?
And boom, this baby is faster. It was weird, apps would load pretty slow, internet browsing SUCKED, general slowness and battery drain and whatnot. Now, it's SUPER fast. Everything works great, except my shortcut keys for the dock, which is weird. But even the battery last so much longer. I was able to do root again, then did voodoo rootkeeper. Then I installed titanium backup (after moving the folder off the SD card along with whatever else you want to keep) and restored the apps, but app only, not data (except for a few key ones). It seemed to work for the most part and this baby works like a charm. I had 3.2 and updated to 4.0 so maybe a wipe is something you might consider if you're TF is feeling slow, even in performance mode.
Thanks. Helpful for me because I've been considering doing the same thing after the. 19 update that's supposed to be coming. I feel like all of the past updates which were more designed for bug fixes have been putting more of a damper on the performance. With this upcoming update, it looks like they are now actually focusing on features and user experience, so I want to make sure that I don't associate those 'improvements' with lackluster behavior I've noticed since a couple updates ago.
For the first time ever, I experienced 3 random reboots in the same day a couple days ago. I hugged Optimus and told it not to worry. Everything will be okay.

Pretty much. It's a factory reset. It's a real pain because you have to reinstall everything from scratch.
UNLESS you have root and a good backup utility like Titanium Backup.
Then you wipe, get root (back), install Titanium, and restore you system settings, apps, and data.
I am going to take the chance on posting this and getting flamed because people already know, if you don't know I would appreciate the thanks.
Titanium is great for keeping important data but a better and easier way to get a real fresh start after wipe is appbrain.
Do Titanium full backup
install appbrain and fast web install
sync
login to appbrain online and rename your prime list to old
wipe/factory reset
reinstall appbrain and fast web install be sure to enable fast web install
sync
log in to your appbrain account and copy the apps from old to your new device
open appbrain on device
sync
install
watch a movie while all your apps download without needing you
restore data from titanium where needed, restore programs that are not in the market
????
profit
The difference here is that you don't restore any corrupted programs from Titanium
Doesn't anyone know how the built-in ASUS app backup works? Is it affected by the factory reset?

I'm going to say it does, since it wipes the SD card. But if you put a microSD or regular SD you should be able to save to that instead, then restore from that after. It might be as good as Titanium, or app brain, I think part of the key is not restoring data, apps only.

Works a treat. I used it. The only thing is if savedata (like levels in games) is saved on sd, you are going to loose it. But it can be always manually copied. Any other app which saves logins and such in /data (i think it's /data will be fine). And no root needed.
To OP, done it before. No difference. My TFP never been sluggish, just suffers from occasional browser freeze, well, more than occasional, and reboots when certain apps fc. Wipe didn't fix that.

so after factory reset, i can go google play and reinstall all my old previously bought apps? or i need to pay for it again?

Lol yeah, you can re-download your apps It keeps up with everything you pay for and even with most of the free stuff you install. Easier route may be to use ASUS's App Backup or if you're rooted Titanium Backup (Pro is worth it).
After doing a full wipe at lunch i can confirm my prime seems much snappier. Also my dolphin browser works flawless finally. Asus back up did not work for me.

Asus backup looks fairly simple. Just open the app, then choose the apps you want to backup. There is a check for data only or data and application near the top right. Choose data and app if you want both, but for some reason you can only do 600MB, not sure why. But if you have it under that (I unchecked all my games and got it low enough) then you can hit the backup button on the top, which then has a (Checkbox) option to also save to the microsd or SD card plugged in
ic. Very informative.
Haven't played with the SD slot on the Prime so I guess I have a reason now =)
You also have an option to save a copy to the MicroSD, card if it's mounted. I'm in the process of a wipe now and will let you know about the restore using the ASUS backup. I've used TB in the past but haven't rooted this unit yet and so can only speak to the ASUS backup.

To be just a little more precise, the ASUS backup app creates a file in the ASUS folder that can be copied to a PC, USB drive, to the cloud, or whatever, and then copied back to the same folder when the wipe is done. Then apps and data can be selectively restored. Works well.

I use these two chat apps on my phone. They are linked to your phone number. I tried installing them on my Prime but can't get past the registration parts about the phone number.
Is it possible to use these apps on the Prime using the same account you use with your phone? I would like to receive and send messages using both my phone and Prime. It is much faster typing with the Prime keyboard dock.
Thanks
Use titanium backup to make a backup of whatsapp on you phone, then restore it on the prime with data. You should be all set.. when there is a new version out, just do a restore on the prime of the app only..
I used a new number on my prime since the messages doesn't always gets delivered to the right device
Thanks for the response. Sounds impractical if Whatsapp confuses over which device to send incoming messages to though.
I also considered having two separate Whatsapp/Kakao accounts (one for phone and one for tablet), but it is a logistically poor idea for when one of my friends wants to start a conversation with me. They may accidentally choose to message my tablet when I only have my phone with me.
I really do not understand why Whatsapp hasn't released a non-phone based app. If someone could explain this to me, it would be appreciated. Because all I see right now is a company not developing for a booming market (think iPad and other Wifi only devices too).

titanium backup all the way. its the best backup solution so long as you are rooted. you dont have to be unlocked to use it, just rooted.
If you are unlocked id suggest a nandroid backup.

On JB, App Backup ( which also supposedly backs up app data as well ) is a factory installed program. Since you agree to the Asus bound EULA upon starting it up, im guessing its an ASUS app too

Well, If you can unlock your bootloader, Id suggest TWRP to create entire dumps of your current setup. If im not mistaken, titanium can pull the data from cwm / twrp dumps and restore pretty much everything. If you need a hand with unlocking and installing TWRP, you can pm me and ill walk you through it. Its not terribly difficult although you will need a computer nearby.

No problem My understanding is that ASUS , while a pain in the A$$ with warranty issues, will still take care of hardware ones with an unlocked / modded tf201. They just wont cover it if you brick it yourself.

I use Apex Launcher which is damn close to the stock launcher. It has a backup settings / desktop content setting built in. Im not sure but check to see if there is an entry in the app backup program for "Launcher2". If so, you are good to go as thats the program name for the OEM launcher

No, it doesn't take a backup of your home screen.
It does a pretty good job on backing apps and data, but you'll need to "rebuild" your home screen.

no it doesnt, it only backs up apps and app date (some games wont work - i found this the hard way).
best thing to save home screen layouts is just take a screen shot and re-do.

i wouldnt rely on this from Asus, ive seen people with things which are clearly hardware issues and they wont fix or they have really had to fight for it. basically if you unlock id take it as asus wont support you, anything on top of that is a bonus. ive insured mine.
As has been said, no the ASUS app doesnt backup home screen layouts. My cell phone camera however does.
I just went through this 3 days ago when exchange stopped synching and all the removing and re-adding of the account did not help.
All my apps except ironically the stock browser didnt have favorites I had set and bad piggies was at square one.
It also didnt backup my VPN settings, pictures/videos, screen timeouts and most basic OS settings (weather loc, temp in F etc..). The cam stuff I copied off via USB sync.
Basically after the restore I got my apps back, but no icons. I then used the pics I took with my cell phone to redo the homescreen. Then I set up email, VPN, basic OS settings. Had to log in to many of the apps that were restored. Chrome saved bookmarks so I loaded those and copied the URL to ASUS browser to restore them.
so in short a very manual job one way or another. But seriously lads thanks for the tips... been considering RAM of my tab the past few days , and have tons of custom settings and apps that I'd like to keep. Kinda sad that no auto solution has poped up.
