[Q] Samsung GT-I9100P Galaxy SII & MS Outlook - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all.
I have just purchased the above phone with NFC on the ORANGE Network (UK). I have installed the latest version of KIES and hit a few problems. This is the situation:
I have used iPhone 4s for a few months and love the way it syncs my MS Outlook Contacts & Calendar etc.
Now using KIES & MS Outlook. This is very problematic.
I have synced using KIES which seems to grab information from all over the place and installs it where it wants. within its contacts and calendar.
I have surnames where they shouldn't be, duplicate calendar dates and duplicate dates of birth or anniversary etc.
I have managed manually to sort everything out on the phone and backed it up. I will do a re-sync later and see what happens but i am thinking it will screw everything up again.
Does anyone have an idea how to get around these problems please?

Why are you involving Kies? I have my phone synching to my outlook email and calendar without Kies. I could synch my contacts too, but I don't have any in my exchange account.

Haven't had any problems with outlook sync myself but am using Activesync Exchange which syncs to my corporate email over the air. Hence don't use Kies to sync.
My only thinking is that you may have saved contacts on your sim causing duplicates. I only see duplicates if I sync multiple sources like Google contacts, and outlook but within accounts sync in the settings you can choose what to sync.
If you have a new phone, maybe worth resetting contacts as outlook is your backup.
Btw, I used to sync outlook to Google before I had the option to use corporate email. If you sync to Google then you won't need to connect via cable which is a huge benefit. I used a paid app to make sure the sync is perfect but that was a year ago.

I have similar problem on my SGS2.
Some of my contacts are quadrupled both in SGS2 and Outlook after syncing them trough Kies 2.1.1.11124_17.
And it has to be Kies since my HTC Blackstone synced with Outlook 5 minutes before SGS2 without any problems...
And NO, I don't want to keep my contacts anywhere except on SGS2 and Outlook.
And I don't have any form of corporate mail on SGS2.
Any toughts?
@ctomgee: How do you sync with Outlook without Kies? Trough Exchange?

I use gSyncIt to sync my outlook with gmail account, which then auto-synchronizes with the phone. Works perfectly.

I think you need more flexibility, personally. This is an android phone, which means your contacts AUTOMATICALLY sync to your google account.

This sounds like your best option.
Seriously, I don't even use Kies. The only reason I even have it installed still is for the drivers. If I had some motivation to do so, I would just look for the stand-alone Samsung USB drivers for my phone and uninstall Kies completely.

For duplicates in contacts, schedules, I would check Accounts and settings and look inside to see what is syncing. I had multiple calendars syncing so stopped my Google sync for calenders only. Also, I have outlook exchange and a local outlook .PST contacts folder but have seen cases where contacts was pulling from exchange and not my local backup. Default will also sync contacts to Google.
Personally, I would try resetting contacts on the phone(you can do without resetting the phone by clearing the application data in applications) and then removing and redoing the sync. I would then check the options carefully before hitting the sync button.
This is how I would do for any sync issues as have done before when syncing outlook to other sources. Trick is to have one master source and push/sync read only until you are happy, then update to sync.
Have a feeling Kies default options are not perfect but there other USB sync options in the Market like Nitrodesk, companionlink and others above.

HTC Blackstone synced to the same Outlook *.pst file as SGS2 did few minutes later. Blackstone synced trough ActiveSync and messed nothing. SGS2 synced trough Kies and quadrupled some contacts, not all of them. So it's either Kies or SGS2...

Well, my SGS2 arrived with 2.3.4 (KG2/KG1/KE1), and there was option to disable some or all parts of sync with Google. Which I partially disabled (contacts).
And they remained non-synced even after upgrade to 2.3.5, where you have NO option to disable parts of sync...
And as I wrote before, I don't like having my contacts somewhere in some cloud... I admit that is a bit old-fashioned...

Hmmm.
Just checked my phone and am on 2.3.6 SGS 2 i91000
I checked my sync settings and am able to disable individual. I did notice I have my linked in and Facebook contacts synced as well so maybe other apps are syncing? Interesting not all contacts are quadrupled. Looking at my contacts, I have pictures shown but show source of data. Pictures with a small g refer to Google contacts, pics with f refer to Facebook, pics with in refer to Linkedin. Maybe this will help indicate thesource of the data for you.

Also, you can join contacts that are duplicated into a single contact on your contacts list.

[Q] Sync Outlook Contact and Calendar with Google

Dear all members,
Just to check whether how we can sync my outlook contacts and calendars with my Google account.
I have tried Google App Sync but I have encounter an error which need the Google app sync to be enabled in the email account..
Anyone know what I should do or any easy software to sync the contacts and calendars between Google and Outlook?
i think this was only turned on from 2.1 up then it was enhanced in 2.2
If you are planning on doing this only once a workaround is to export your Outlook contacts to a comma separated .csv file and upload this file to Google contacts. Works very nice, but I understand you might need to do it a smoother way if you need to sync Outlook and Google often.

Hi,
Yes, I will prefer that there will be a software which will continously sync the contacts in my Outlook with Google and that is why Google App Sync caught my mind.
But I know that I can only use it if my Google account is the premier and not the normal type.
Anyone know whether there is other software which can do the task?

Try turning Outlook off then on again?
I have noticed when ever I start Outlook now I get a popup asking about which "profile" (i think is the word used) to enable; google sync or outlook?
Syncing between X10i and Outlook (business phone is foked without this ability imo) is the main reason I am travelling along the rooting road at the moment... not started the search for the software yet.
Have installed google sync but not used yet as I am uncomfortable storing 20+ years worth of valuable networking details in that giants hands
Good luck

Thanks. I managed to find 3rd party software called Companion link but required to purchase in order to use. If the software is good, I dun mind paying for it.
Guys,
I have managed to try out the CompanionLink software whereby you can synchronize the outlook contacts and calendars with your Google account, it work perfectly so with this software, there is no hassle either you do update on your phone or PC using Outlook.
check it out if you are interested :
http://www.companionlink.com/
However, you can try it for 15 days and if you like it, you will have to purchase the license which I will be intending to purchase this software.

Guys, I just turned on my X10 first time.
When I go to Calendar app it asks me to login to Google account.
That may be strange question for users here, but - do I HAVE to login to Google
to use Calendar on X10?!
i'm using MyPhoneEx and it works well and it is free
I also use MyPhoneExplorer

?! I was asking about Calendar application...
Yeap. I use MyPhoneEx to sync outlook contact/Calendar directly into my X10. If I want to sync contact/calendar with Google, I just goto Setting ->Accounts & Sync and press sync contacts (or Calendar).
That's why your X10 asked you to log-in to google when you turned it on. If you've not log-in to Google, the calendar in X10 is still working fine but you cannot sync it with google contact (or calendar).

Calendar NOT Synchronizing

Hi All,
I have registered my Google Apps account on my LG P500.
This is the only account configured on the phone.
I have my contacts and mails synchronizing well with my phone, however my Calendar is just not synchronizing with the Phone.
I have upgraded the Phone to 2.2.2 and have done a factory re-set many number of times, however the Calendar is still not synchronizing with the Phone.
I at times see 2-3 Calendar entries synced with the Phone, but the complete Calendar is not Synchronizing with the Phone.
This same Google Apps account syncs well with my HTC Hero (2.1), including the Calendar.
Can someone please suggest a solution for this issue.
I almost want to throw the phone in the Bin.
PLEASE HELP.
Any chance you have multiple Google calendars and the phone is only syncing the main one?

I am not using any Desktop app for synchronization.
The Google Sync on the phone should be able to sync my Calendar.

Have you solved this?
Have you tried making your events visible in the calendar settings?

Exchange contacts sync

I currently have a stock Telstra ROM and will remain as a stock ROM until Telstra release the firmware so I have a warranty copy
I am having issues with the Exchange contacts and Sync - it is set to sync contacts, email, calendar, etc., and when you initially set up the account, all the contacts sync, but if I delete a contact on my phone, it remains in Outlook and if I create a new one in Outlook, it doesn't appear on my phone. The Calendar and email seem to work just fine.
This is becoming a major problem, as I have to create the contact twice, and if I forget the create it on my phone, I have no information for the client I want to call.
Can anyone offer a solution to this - is there a setting I have missed. Is it a bug?
thanks
DT
Outllok only syncs contacts with basic information like names and phone numbers. Any extra like pictures and notes will not resync beccuase it does not recognize these fields.

I do have some contacts with contact images - which do sync the first time you set up the account. However, I created a test contact on the phone - nothing extra and it doesn't sync and I also then created a contact in Outlook with no extras, and it doesn't sync either. This must be a bug, but it is one I have to find a solution for fast, as it effects my business.
thanks

I take it that Contacts were included in the setup of adding the Exchange email account.
Can you view the email account via a web browser? If you can, then you can find out if the problem is with the phone or the Outlook on the computer.

Yes it was.
There is no problem with the web outlook, outlook our the exchange server, it is the phone.

I know that it is tedious, but what happens when you remove the account from your phone. Switch it off and on, then add the account again?

It does the initial sync of all contacts, but then no more sync of changes.

Go into Contacts, select Option button, Mor-> Settings -> Save new contacts to. You get the option to save to the Phone, Google (your gmail account) and Microsoft Exchange (your work exchange email account). Select the Exchange option.
When you go into Contacts, select Option buttonthen select Sync contacts. Alternatively you could just go to the email app and do a refresh, then the (Exchange email) contacts should sync.

Already have tried that - it is set to save to Exchange and doing the sync there or in "account and sync" doesn't change anything. I even contacted Samsung and all they suggested was buying Touchdown from the app store - great product Samsung has if they can't even support their own software.
DT
Same issue here. Works fine for a few days then bam! stops syncing. the only way to get it updated is to blow out the contacts on the phone and re-do the initial sync. Which sucks if you have added contacts on the phone.
Evidently this is not an isolated issue. Based on reports from others in other forums, many of which are from IT professionals, this is a recurring issue with no discernible rhyme or reason.
I have a hotmail account. I put on my phone as an exchange account.
I added a contact via the browswer on my PC. Synced my phone and the contact appeared. Deleted it on the phone, synced the account. Checked on the PC and the contact had gone.
I repeated this with a few contacts. some started on the phone and some on the PC. I also took some contacts and modified their details. and synced. There were later modified again with different details on the PC. Every test showed that there was not a problem.
I am using the stock KF3 ROM and the test was run in the standard e-mail app. I have Enhanced Email (just so that I can sync more than 1 month).

Nope - Samsung said that there is limited support for Activesync and to use touchdown (at $20 from the market). I am using the trial of it at the moment, and even though it does sync the contacts within the touchdown app, it doesn't sync between the app and the stock contacts, which your phone uses for dialing, text, etc.
It is a major bug, and one they don't seem to want anything to do with.
DT
I once again contacted Samsung Support indicating that the contacts sync is a bug and what solutions are likely on the horizon. This is the response...
Thank you for contacting Samsung Customer Care.
Android is an open source operating system owned by Google. If this is
not functioning, it is configuration of the exchange itself that will be
creating issues.

[Q] ActiveSync and contacts issue [SOLVED]

I have my phone setup to sync my Outlook contacts, calendar and e-mail via ActiveSync and my Hotmail account. This appears on the phone as a Corporate Exchange account using MS servers, but in reality it is just the Hotmail cloud (no Exchange client). It works fine for me (although contact photos only sync from Outlook to phone, not vice-versa), but I have a problem with contacts I create on the phone. There is no way to assign them to an account so they end up not syncing to my Outlook, which only syncs contacts bearing the corporate symbol or that have been joined from Facebook to an existing Outlook contact. I've looked all over and not found any way to either create a contact on the phone under a specific account or to convert one after the fact. The only workaround I have found is to create a new contact in Outlook with the same name, wait until it syncs to the phone, then join it with the existing contact on the phone. This is obviously not optimal. Any ideas?
I'm looking for information on this as well.
In my case, my calendar, contacts, (tasks?) and email are all being syncronized via corporate exchange. I try to use my corporate exchange as my base point, so I would like to keep my contacts there by default.
When creating a new contact, I do not see how to designate where the contact is to be stored. I would think I would be given the option to save it under:
Exchange
Gmail
or phone.
I thought this used to be an option, but I'm not seeing it under the latest Unamed ROM.
Has this option been removed? or am did I ever have that option?
I have a suggestion but I'm not sure it's exactly what you're looking for. I don't use exchange server email so I don't know if this is what you need.
I sync all of my contacts and calendar to Outlook using MyPhoneExplorer. you can get the app for free in the market and download the program directly to your computer (do a google search to find their website to download the desktop version). If your phone is on the same (wifi) network as your computer you can even sync wirelessly. It syncs perfectly in both directions - phone to computer and vice versa.
hope this helps.
I've also heard that the Kies program works. It can be downloaded from the Samsung website.
Under sync settings, I unchecked the contacts sync for Gmail so now by default all new contacts are saved to Exchange.
Found it,
Maybe NOT synching the Gmail account, made this option available but suspect it was just buried deeper than I remember.
I thought this used to be a context option.
In Contacts
Settings (leftmost key button)
More
Settings again (bottom of list)
Save new contacts to.....
Now, what was that darn password I needed to save again....?
Oh-Yeah, Netflix....
Iqak, that did the trick. I knew I was able to do that before, but why I couldn't find it before is beyond me. Thanks.

How to ove Blackberry memos and calendars to GNote?

I cant find how to do this and believe me I have search...

Will the note sync with outlook? The blackberry does. If both of them do then maybe I can sync the BB first then sync the Note. Any good backing program that I can use without rooting so I can put it back the way it was before I try this?

It doesn't out of box. Samsung Kies software can be downloaded somewhere (other than US) that supports sync with Outlook for calendars and contacts, not memos.
Your best choice is sync with some cloud services like GMail or Hotmail for calendars and contacts.
I end up using DejaOffice and outlook. I sync my blackberry to outlook only selecting the calendar and memos. Then i sync from outlook to used DejaOffice to in the Note. Working fine so far. There is a few kinks i need to iron but it is working great!
