[Q] Pantech Burst Love, Anyone? Anyone? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have been trying to figure out how to get into the fastboot mode on this pantech burst, really want to root it and maybe remove some of the stuff locked by AT&T. Anyone else find this phone very usable, like me. I think its a great phone and I have had several android phones in the past 2 years and this is my favorite "stock" firmware but just would like to remove the AT&T bloat.

New to Android here. Got the burst cause salesman said it was newest and best in my range. Well there be a way to root this thing anytime soon? Meaning, what I'd the usual wait time for root after a new device is released? Would I be better off to go back and trade for something else like HTC? Always liked HTC OS on my old win mobile devices. Thanks for reply.

My Pantech Burst bench notes
I have 2 brand new Bursts on my work bench. I've been doing some tinkering with them. Here are a few my bare bone notes so far:
Pantech Burst Model P9070
All of the articles I read said the Burst would ship with 2.3.4. Both of mine have 2.3.5. Last minute update?
According to AT&T the Latest Firmware is JUUS12052011
-----
Pull & reinsert the Battery, then hold Power & Volume Down buttons until a screen with a Triangle with Yellow ! appears. Once this pops up, Press the Menu button to make the Android Recovery <3e> menus appear.
At this point, The volume rockers become the up & down Keys. The Home button is Enter
-----
When you Pull & reinsert the Battery, then press & hold both Volume buttons then press Power - "S/W Upgrading" will appear on the screen
-----
So far ZergRush nor OneClick work to achieve Root.

Oh, and you can get the Pantech PC Suite which contains the ADB drivers here:
http://c724062.r62.cf2.rackcdn.com/PantechPCSuite_1.0.10.3314.exe
That's taken directly from Pantech's site.

Here is the link to get open source files from Pantech.

I tried to search for Burst but it found nothing. I think the model number of the burst is "P9070". I searched that and found "P9070_Kernel.zip" file. It shows that it's country code is "KOR" and if I try to download it I get an error message

I did a google search for "P9070_Kernel.zip" and found http://opensource.pantech.com/model/list.asp?Category=Mobile# This still shows the country as KOR but it will let me download it. Not sure if this will help anyone with rooting or making a custom ROM. I am no programmer so I can't do anything with this file.

The P9060 shown on the site is supposed to be the US version of the Kernel.

That is not the US version of the kernel for this device. It is the US kernel for the Panteck Pocket.
The Burst's model number is P9070
The Pocket's model number is P9060
http://www.pantechusa.com/support/pocket
You can try that kernel on the Burst if you want but it may very well brick the device

Saw this while sitting here at work. wondering if once in the recovery could see the device from ADB.... maybe could even do fastboot oem unlock then work from there... all things to try once I get home...

i have this pantech IM-A730s with lock pattern problem.
i had downloaded the kernel zip file from the linsk from above.
can anyone guide me how to reflash the phone?
thx

The "PantechP9070_README.txt" included in what you downloaded clearly shows this is only the Source Code to compile a kernel. It is NOT a flashable Kernel. If you are having problems with your phone, contact Pantech Tech Support. I have spoken with them at length. They are decent people. (Much Much better than they use to be.)

There is a downloadable kernel for the US P9070. If you look into the source info it clearly indicates it is for the AT&t Burst P9070.

Here's how to get into fastboot:
Install Pantech Drivers, from a command line run:
adb reboot bootloader
Your Burst will reboot and reload into a familiar white screen stating FASTBOOT
Now here's something else I figured out... Not quite sure, maybe APX mode?
With the Burst powered off, if USB Debugging is disabled and you plug it into your computer, some useless drivers are enabled (at least for root purposes):
Network Adapters > Pantech Android MDM WWAN
Portable Devices > F:\
Universal Serial Bus Controllers > Pantech Android MDM RMNET Device
Universal Serial Bus Controllers > Pantech Android USB Composite Device
None of these seem too useful for root...
Now boot the Burst, enable USB Debugging, then power down and plug it into your pc again...
In addition to the above, I now have:
Portable Devices > G:\
Android Phone > Pantech Android ADB Interface Ver1
And with that said, I have a working adb connection from a command line without booting into the device...
Also F:\ & G:\ show up in Windows as removable disks, but they cannot be accessed.
Tried to manually push/run GingerBreak, psneuter, and zergRush, so far nothing will root this device

I too am awaiting a strategy for rooting this device but so far, nothing i have tried will work. In order for this to happen, we're going to have to build a custom recovery and/or kernel for this phone and that is not the easiest thing to do lol.... Im currently working on installing my own custom kernel for the Burst so i will keep updates on how that goes and when it will be ready as a flashable .zip package. So far i have foumd the stock kernel pieces wbich now just need to be rebuilt and package into a working kernel with root injected. Im using Sourcery G+ + Lite to build my kernel with the toolchain. If any developers could step forward and help me with this, it would be vreatly appreciated. I have the Toolchain and the kernel.gz file on hand, if anyone is interested in taking a swing at it with me, reply here or drop me a PM.

I just want to say that this is an awesome phone with specs on par if not better than the GSII and other high-end phones that's begging for custom ROMs. It came out a couple of months ago and still NOBODY in the whole internet (Google at least lol) seems to be doing anything on it, I can't even fond stock FWs or official flashing tools...I'm a sad panda

I bought it yesterday for 200$ brand new and no commitment. I think this is a sick price for a dual core Android phone.
As for the rooting, I am willing to help you guys work on root. What kind of things should I do? What is a general strategy when rooting something ?

$200 is a good deal. Where did you get it? I wanna learn about all those kernel, adb ,rooting, cooking roms and stuff. But I'm scared to brick my nexus. Burst is definitely a good phone to try. Benchmark score high too
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium

I got it from ebay. There are ton's of Bursts with the price range of 200-250$.
It will arrive tomorrow, I will write a little review once I get it

Please do! It's not perfect but with the right ROM (CM9 please!) or at least Root, I think it will be!!

My girlfriend has one. I really like it. The screen is beautiful, much better than my thunderbolt. The default launcher is pretty nice too, simple but works nice. It doesn't have the complex overlay like sense or blur, so I hope they will update quickly with new Android versions.

Meanwhile... There is another Dual Core Pantech that has been rooted.
Here is more info about it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1426984

Some root method should work, but I rather have CWM and a way back to stock working first! Because I rooted a Pantech Pocket and erased a system file by accident and it didn't boot anymore.

Sub Forum For Korean Note SHV-E160

Can someone at XDA please start a sub forum for the Korean Note? People with versions SHV-E160K SHV-E160L & SHV-E160S need a place to discuss their devices and get some development going on for their Notes too. I believe if they had their own forum they too would have custom roms and mods for their devices instead of asking on the other Note forums if our roms will work on their devices.

I don't think your right about that. If there was devs with the device of course they would dev for it.

I do believe they desrve their own niche somewhere. I doubt they will get their own section but maybe a sub forum under the n7000 or I717 forum.
Thanks for your proposal. We also need a froum or subforum for Japanese Version of Galaxy Note SC-05D

Any moderators listening? A sub forum under i717 would certainly be helpful for Korean G note users

Are you still running GB on your phone ?
Hi Guys,
I was able to root my Galaxy Note SHV-E160s. I know it is rooted because I can run apps that needs root access. Many Thanks to Tegrak who made this possible. Now the only thing missing is a CUSTOM ROM. Before, they said that it is impossible to upgrade the HTC BlueAngel to Windows 6.5, but it was a success and now an old friend on mine (D-TWO) was able to make android work on it. Before, they said that HTC HD2 can not be upgraded to Android but lookwhere it is right now. Running on ICS and beta JB. Galaxy Note SHV-e160s, is not far from it. If more people will request here, developers will listen. Please let's make this happen.
I want to share how I was able to root my Note (SHV E160s) successfully. All credits goest to Tegrak.

First I downloaded these files
>Tegrak-Kernel-Build-32-for-SHV-E160S-FA09.recovery.tar
>Tegrak-Kernel-Build-32-for-SHV-E160S-FA09.zip
>SAMSUNG_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones_x86.exe
>SAMSUNG_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones.exe
>Odin3_v1.85_intratech.zip
>TEGRAK app https://play.google.com/store/apps/...t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS50ZWdyYWsubGFnZml4Il0.
The Build number of my Note is SHV_E160s_FA09, that's the reason why I'm gonna use the files mentioned above.
1. Installed TEGRAK APP. (look in Google Play)
2. Save Tegrak-Kernel-Build-32-for-SHV-E160S-FA09.zip on my phone. Should be in internal memory /sdcard/tegrak/update folder
3. Save the file Tegrak-Kernel-Build-32-for-SHV-E160S-FA09.recovery.tar in my laptop
4. Installed Samsung USB Drivers
5. run ODIN
6. Turned off the phone and went to download mode (hold power + home button + volume down key)
7. Connected the phone to my laptop
8. Once Odin detected the phone I clicked on PDA and searched for Tegrak-Kernel-Build-32-for-SHV-E160S-FA09.recovery.tar
NOTE: Do not tick on anything, just leave everything the way it is.
9. Click on start....wait....wait...it will tell you when it's done and you phone will automatically boot itself
10. Turn off the phone again.
11. Go to recovery mode (power button + BOTH volume keys0 and once you see the SAMSUNG name, unhold the power button while holding BOTH volume keys. And you will have the recovery mode. You will have two options, select the second one where it says install from ZIP and look for Tegrak-Kernel-Build-32-for-SHV-E160S-FA09.recovery.tar and flash it. Once done, it will reboot your phone.
12. Go to your apps and run Tegrak Kernel App. Tap on Enable rooting. And will then give you a message where it says "Success! done."
Your Samsung Galaxy Note SHV-E160s is now ROOTED.
Try it, run some apps that needs root access.
Now, let's look for a custom ROM!

Hi, I asume you upgrade it by kies, then rooted it?? did you use the manual from red_hanks??
that's right, but we have found another one (maybe better ) tutorial;
SHV-E160S Samsung Galaxy Note
Written by Marvill Web Development Published on 03 August 2012
I recently acquired a galaxy note that was manufactured in korea the specs are similar to the galaxy note manufactured here in the Philippines however 4G LTE Version and has an internal storage of 32GB. What is noteworthy to consider is it comes with the software upgrade from Samsung with Google’s ICS 4.0.4. For those interested in getting the galaxy note version you have to remember that there are slight difference in their software even its developers have a different approach in rooting the device.
The major problem with this device is its SMS service since it is limited to 80 characters only and it automatically converts it to MMS which don’t really use here in the Philippines, even installing Handcent and Go SMS Pro doesn’t support sending with its SMS service. If you can live with sending multiple SMS with 80 characters each then this version is ok for you.
I know a lot of you are asking can it be rooted??? Well the good news for you is it can rooted but you have to follow the steps that I was able to gather from the net. I don’t take credit from any of this development I am just summarizing the research I was able to gather from the net. So not unless you are ready to gamble your device remember that it might take hours for you to recover your device just in case you brick it.
Links required for upgrading and rooting:
Here you will be able to find the download file for Samsung Kies. (Required for Galaxy Note Drivers)
http://downloadandroidrom.com/file/Samsung/Kies_2.0.3.11082_152_4.exe
Here you will find the list of flashable firmwares for your device.
http://pspmaster.tistory.com/m/post/view/id/179
Here you will find the rooting files that you will need to use to root your Galaxy Note:
http://pspmaster.tistory.com/181
Here you can download the ODIN 1.85. (Required and will be used to flash stock firmware and recovery.
http://downloadandroidrom.com/file/Samsung/ODIN/Odin3_v1.85.zip
Take Note of the firmwares name when you download the one which has FA09 is the gingerbread firmware and the one which has UF13 is ice cream sandwhich. Please make in downloading the recovery and zip you should match this filename also.
Flashing Stock Firmware:
1. Download your choice of firmware, the file has been split to several parts so you will need 7Zip to extract them in one sing Tar file. Each Split of file amounts to 10MB except the last one.
2. After having downloaded all the files make sure to download Odin 1.85
3. Completely Shut Down your device, once device has been shut down press the following combination Vol Down + Home + Power (You will See a Korean boot logo) Once you see the Logo press up then you will enter Download Mode.
4. Fire up Odin then connect your USB cable with your desktop and device. You will then see in Odin that your device com port filled in yellow that means your devices is detected and ready to be flashed. Click on PDA and select the firmware that you have extracted and press start. Make sure that your device is in a solid state and stable while flashing.
5. Once Success of Update has been made then the device will reboot with your firmware this may take a few minutes in booting up.
For Rooting the device here are the steps:
SPECIAL THANKS TO Jayson Post on Steps how to Root. Ok for those of you who are new to this (like me) i managed to root it; because i can now access system files so im pretty sure i’m rooted (because rooting gives you access to system files! kinda like getting permission for administrator control over your device). i’ll make it as detailed as possible for us noobs make sure you download Odin, the .tar file and the .zip file for your specific model.
1. turn off your korean Galaxy Note (mine is SHV-E160S)
2. connect usb cable to your pc (make sure you have Samsung Kies installed so your phone will be recognized during recovery mode)
3. hold down the ff buttons: volume down + home + power, you will see a warning sign with korean writing…… press volume up
4. go to your desktop/laptop and run Odin v1.85, you should have a yellow “0:[COM10]” at the left side to continue
5. look for a tab that says “PDA” and select the .tar file for your model (in my case i’m using a SHV-E160S model so my file was “Tegrak-Kernel-Build-32-for-SHV-E160S-FA09.recovery.tar”)
6. click “Start” and wait for the reboot
7. next is turn off the device again, once the device is fully turned off… hold the following buttons: volume up + volume down
8. while holding down the volume buttons, turn on the device by pressing the power button
9. you should be in Tegrak’s recovery mode by now, you will be in a black screen with writings saying “Tegrak Kernel Build 32″ highlighted yellow at the top of the screen
10. navigate the menu with the volume buttons and select by pressing the home button…. search for your .zip file (in my case it is “Tegrak-Kernel-Build-32-for-SHV-E160S-FA09.zip”) and select that with the power button
Next thing i did was wait for the device to power back up and went in Google Play store. downloaded “Tegrak Kernel” first then downloaded “Superuser”. opened Tegrak Kernel and tapped “enable rooting”.. with this i was able to access my system files with this method http://dottech.org/android/17673/use-android-mate-free-to-remove-bloatware-from-your-android-phone/
Battery Efficiency:
After a number of test for the Galaxy Note the following things are required to get the best out of its battery usage.
Free Apps to Download:
1. Battery Calibration
2. Tegrak Overclock
3. CPU Spy
4. Temp CPU
Paid Apps Optional
1. Tegrak Overclock Donate (In this app you will be able to adjust voltage of your kernel however please proceed with caution)
2. Rom ToolBox Pro
3. CPU Sleeper
Steps to get the best out of your battery: (Preferred to be done on the evening before you sleep)
1. Charge your device to 100% then start Battery Calibration and Allow Permissions
2. Once you have reached 100% turn off device remove battery for a minute or two and plug it back in then start your device again.
3. Once you have boot your device go to ROM Toolbox and use Auto Start check out the Apps running on startup and disable those you don’t need to run in boot. (Proceed with caution and make sure that you don’t disable system apps which should run on boot).
4. Go to Settings > Apps > and see downloaded apps for some reason ICS starts a lot of applications which you have downloaded Force Close each App that you don’t need to be running in the background.
5. Open Tegrak Overclock and Load Overclock then go to Scaling and choose powersave governor and set min to 192 and the max to 1134 I tested this and it seemed to be able to handle the device properly. (Take Note that ICS applies your current scaling but does not show actual use of CPU this is why you need to download TempCPU which will give you the active scaling of your CPU)

For thr price i recon its a bargain. Its not a samsung s3, but with 1 gb ram 4 g on board i think it good.
Once you load it up it can be a pitty laggy at times, but hey i can cope with with that price, so iam happy with it.
Root ZTE T81
Hi all, It seems that no root method including Bin4ry's and SuperOneClick, have worked on my Telstra ZTE T81 so far, and the bootloader is impossible to access through ADB using "adb reboot bootloader" as the phone seems to go into DFU mode(red light, black screen, no response till you pull the battery out).
Physically I only seem to be able to access recovery mode, FTM, and DFU with a combination of the power and volume keys. I have a suspicion that maybe ZTE, in their recent FOTA update that i naively installed may have something to do with my being completely unable to access the bootloader or root the phone.
Any advice/tips would be greatly appreciated
Device: Telstra ZTE T81
Android version: 4.0.4
Baseband version: T81_T01
Kernel version 3.0.8-perf-svn21987
Software version T81_M01

I have bought the phone and it is very good and have also tried rooting the phone aswell. I have done the exact same as you with Bin4ry's and superoneclick and also noticed there seems to be no bootloader. I would like to root my phone but for now I guess we can't
Thanks for useful links.
Thanks for the benchmark link over there. Your links served too good. It was good visiting here. And if someone gets more about this device share it over here as I am looking forward for this phone.

The recent update for the ZTE t81 will also un-root a previously rooted device! I rooted my t81 about 4 months ago with Root_with_Restore_by_Bin4ry_v31 and it worked perfectly, first time, no problems. However today, after I downloaded the new update, my device lost its root. I am currently in the process of attempting to re-root my device. I will let you know what kind of result I can get.
Hey there, figured I'd give you the heads' up. This device is very easily rootable, and you can find the details at http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1886460 (seriously, download it, follow the prompts, select 'Other' and ensure your phone is in either MTP or Charge Only mode when connected to USB), sitting on its stock 4.0.4.
Easy does it!

I tried the above method and it does not work.
There is no "others" to select in the menu.
So have you acutally rooted on of these phones?
I'm not sure if its applicable but this ZTE Avid 4G
{link to GSMArena I'm not allowed to post}
seems a similar specced ZTE phone, apart from the CDMA and FM radio.
If so, would the root method used here work on the T81?

Hmm, I've tried just about every method available and still no results, this device sure is a stubborn one.
I would advise anyone with this phone and wanting to root or keep their root not to update their firmware from the stock version otherwise the phone becomes unrootable. ZTE however, have assured me their update should not effect the rootability of the phone, this doesn't seem to be the case though

Hey guys, i've just tested it and this method works!!!!! just Google a root for the ZTE Avid 4G and you're away laughing, even with the update
Huge thanks to yodhe for this!!!!
Yeah. Worked for me too. Reboots a couple of times and you need to ensure its rebooting into FTM mode.

Hi, I have tried and it does not support OPPO R9S. Feel so useless with a unrooted phone now.
Hey check this out:
http://www.anzow.com/news/List/JNDNRNFOE4.shtml
I just run into this page. With a little patience and Google Translate maybe, it might work...
Anyways, If you already found a solution, please share it.
I'm thinking of buying the R9s Plus when it comes out.
What are your first impressions of your phone?

I have tried the page you posted but still unable to root. Seems like the phone is too new for now. My advice if you like your phone to be rooted., don't get the OPPO R9S or plus when it comes out. Color OS 3.0 doesn't let you choose the default launcher even though you install other launcher. No notification badge for whatsapp and facebook as such. Though you changed the system language to English but some setting or apps would still display chinese. Its my bad that I didn't did a background check on OPPO OS and went to purchase it. Now I am stuck with a this phone.

TBH, I don't think that the Oppo R9S will receive any love from any dev with the way Oppo changed its direction in beginning of 2016.
1. They stopped releasing kernel sources and are in violation of GPL.
2. They removed fastboot binarys from all of their phones and firmwares since the beginning of 2016.
And closed down any possibility of getting an custom recovery flashed to gain root.
3. Community support management in their official support forum is non-existent.
4. They barely do any updates to the firmware.
5. Their Lollipop released phones from end of 2015 are still on Lollipop. While all other OEM's have pushed Marshmallow/Nougat for their 2015 devices (see ASUS).
6. Their strategy is selling the phones and if the customer wants an Android upgrade you have to buy another newer Oppo phone from them which is based on a new Android build.
7. I could go on and on...
in short stay of from that OEM if you want freedom on your phone or want any type of dev support.
Haven't rooted it, but you can fix the launcher issue in ADB. Basically install a new launcher then adb shell pm hide com.oppo.launcher
There's a few other fixes too, posted them in a thread on the oppo forums http://community.oppo.com/en/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=50113

If you find a way to root the device. Let us know.
I'm not interested in the device itself or Oppo at all.
Already got burned with an Oppo R7S which I ported to CM later on.
But with root we can unchain those users that fall into Oppo's trap at least.
I too have fallen into their trap. It's horrible. It's iOS
I have the latest R9s too and it's terrible. It's like owning an iPhone or living in a dictatorship.
No multiple widgets, no choice in launcher, no multiple apps, no voice input....
If anyone finds a way to free us PLEASE HELP! SOS. :crying:
See my link above for sorting the launcher issue without root. This also sorts out your other complaints and makes the phone quite nice even without root.

Maybe try the same method that worked for the Oppo R9 Plus?
Look at the last post here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/oppo-f1/help/how-root-oppo-r9-plus-t3460851
Sadly that 360 Root program doesn't work on the R9S. It also comes from a known malware domain.
If it's any help, here's the official downloads for the stock OS:
V5 2016-11-05
V6 2016-12-02
Here's what I've found so far:
You can get into Qualcomm's firmware download mode by holding vol+ and vol- while plugging in a USB cable. This doesn't seem to be that useful as it appears to be a write-only mode unless you have an SPC code, and I don't even know what that is.
You get out of that mode by holding vol+, vol- and power for 10 seconds.
In the stock OS, if you dial *#801# you get an engineering menu, if you then enable the Full-port switch option the phone then shows up in QPST and tells you its ESN and lets you access the embedded file system. Not found out how to access the kernel or system partitions yet, but I'm currently running a backup of the phone's flash, so that's nice
I'll keep editing this post as I find stuff. My first goal is to take a backup of the stock ROM.

Good information you provided here!
In the past there have been factory flasher images provided/leaked in the past.
That made it possible to flash the factory images to the R7 series phones.
If you are lucky, in time there will be one for the R9S. If you find a way to unlock the bootloader let me know. I can build you an TWRP but that only makes sense if there is a way to unlock the bootloader.
If you find a way to backup the aboot. Let me know. I could try to pass that along to an interpreter coder. He may be able to find a way to get fastboot working. (I'm assuming here that Oppo removed it on purpose like they did on all their latest phones)

Can you give me a hint as to how I might back that up? I'm well out of my depth here!
And yes fastboot is removed on purpose. It's annoying as hell compared to my old N3 which was totally open.

It is usually done with a custom programmer.
But I have no actual knowledge how it's done, as in:
Like where you get the sources to write one programmer yourself to access the emmc to read out the flash and extract the GPT tables.
Using those GPT tables to extract the proper partition and so on, while in "EDL Mode".
But there are people who do in this forum. I would start using the search feature and contact those who have programmed such tools.
Here is an example of such an custom programmer:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/axon-7/development/axon7tool-flash-backup-boot-recovery-t3514254
I was wondering if anyone could help, I have had this phone for a few days now. I'm trying to use a third party sms app Google messages, I can't seem to set this app as default when ever a SMS comes in I get an error message saying for your security we have switched back to the default SMS app (oppo stock app) is there any way I could "hide" the oppo security app in adb? The only reason is the stock app is terrible... Or some how root and put stock Android on the phone?

Possible boost mobile version of the LG X Power
Ok I have the Boost Mobile version of the LG X Power. I found a video on youtube. It is putting the root file in the root of the phone. Let me explain. You download a superSU file. You connect the phone to the computer PC. Put the root file in the list of files in the directory. That makes it stand out. To install you go into the recovery on the phone. You don't install it. It is part of the system. Turn off phone. Hold power down and volume down. You enter recovery. You highlight the superSU file and select. It should root the phone. This is the way the very first android phones got rooted. I'm to tired now to try it. Heres the video. Tell me what you think.
How to ROOT ANY Android Device! without PC Using SuperSU [2017]
I'm to new to post a link. I still want to provide help. Just paste the above in a you tube search. Good night All
Does not work. Tried today. It couldn't be that easy.
Open Developer mode
Been searching high and low. Found the below instructions on how to open developer mode on the LG X power. As it says follow at own risk. I did it and got it open to developer mode. I hope this furthers us down a path to root.
Declaration
Do this on your own risk. You device's warranty may be void after following these instructions. If any thing goes wrong and you just end up with a bricked or semi-bricked device then nieghter our site or any of these app devolopers will be responsible.
Your device must have atleat 60% of charge.
Goto Settings -> Security and enable the "Unknown sources".
For your safety, please take backup of your importent stuffs.
Turn on USB debugging mode from Developer Options on your LG X power. To turn on USB debugging you have to enable Developer options, GoTo settings -> About and tap multiple times on build number.
Looking to help
UPDATE
Got my phone into developer mode. Did the things to make it ready to take code easier. With the above it failed to install. So it didn't kill the phone. It only lead to another dead end. If you do watch the video. He claims you need to install recovery first then root. That is backwards. You root first. Then you go into the app store and download a recovery. Or find one in here to download.
As I read in this forum I find old information. Most stuff on this phone or even others I have found is outdated. The stuff on this phone was from 2016. Other info how to fix a brick phone is from 2014. Which is making things harder. Technology moves much faster. Most things said about this phone in 2016 have been changed or patched. I use the search bar to only find what I need. Still its old.
Not trying to be negative about the forum. I just want to learn. Anybody out there with good information on the LG X power from boost mobile. Please help me? LG is a hard nut to crack. Is there a nutcracker out there?

The impossible mission of rooting or oem unlocking BLU NEO XL (120K phones affected!)

Hello XDA Forums,
I have been a guest on the website for a while now when looking for android knowledge and I usually grasp a good amount of whatever I am trying to accomplish. However, the issue I am currently having I feel is considered IMPOSSIBLE to fix and I want to confirm that by this community.
Phone: Blu
Model: NEO XL N110U
Android build version: 6.0
Custom build version (It’s a stock a downloaded, ill explain in a sec)” BLU_N110U_V10_GENERIC_MARSHMALLOW 05-08-2016 16:30
What happened is that about a year ago or so I updated the android version from lollipop to marshmallow using the OTA update (which is the wireless update). Worst decision ever as I found out that this update gave me 4 specific viruses that sends my information over to a Chinese server. Here are links on the virus:
https://www.droid-life.com/2016/11/15/blu-security/
https://blog.malwarebytes.com/cybercrime/2016/11/mobile-menace-monday-adups-old-and-new/
https://android.gadgethacks.com/new...be-affected-by-adups-chinese-spyware-0175014/
With this problem, I thought “I can just root my device and delete the files… right”? I never rooted a device before, but I have jail broken iphones, modded psps, and ds so I felt like this would be easy……Turns out its impossible if you already updated to that wireless update with marshellow. I also tried unlocking bootloader and that failed super hard as well! Here is what I tried:
1. Tried Kingroot app – failed
2. Tried kingroot on pC – failed
3. Went into developer options and enabled usb debugging and oem unlocking to TRY and unlock the bootloader. – that part worked……HOWEVER
4. Went into the recovery and choice reboot to bootloader. Then connected my Blu phone to my PC, went into Command prompt and typed, “fastboot oem unlock” (I believe I had to download fastboot and adb tools first). – This was painful for me. It gave me the option to unlock the bootloader using the up and down volume buttons. I need to press “Volume up” on my phone to confirm the OEM unlock……..HOWEVER THAT HAS BEEN COMPLETELY DISABLED. The buttons work, but when I need to confirm the oem unlock, it doesn’t allow me to do this. THIS I BELIEVE HAS BEEN PURPOSELY DONE.
5. I downloaded a stock version of my phone’s rom but at a lower android number (5.1) and tried to flash it to the phone using SP Flash tools. – Failed. It would stay illuminated black and the intro sound would come on but I wouldn’t see anything. I looked into that and I believe that is because there is something called version binding where if I update the version build, I can’t downgrade to use the same exploit.
6. Since the phone was bricked, I wanted to try to bring it back to life by downloading the stock rom for my phone at the same virus build version I’m at now and flash it to the phone. – It worked with viruses and all.
7. I Then thought, “Can’t I use open the rom file and delete the viruses I want, then flash it to the phone?” So I tried that by using mtk extractor which allowed me to open the system.img file for the stock rom which contains the android data. From there I went into the apps folder and deleted the 4 virus apps. Then I packaged the system.img back together into one file and then used that system.img when I used sp flash tool to flash the rom onto the phone. – It was stuck on the logo……I can still access the recovery fine and still doesn’t allow me to oem unlock.
This is where I have given up. At this point, I feel like I would need to learn more about the system.img file and what it looks for in the beginning. I just want to fool it into booting without those apps. I know there is something stopping it from booting because when I go into the recovery part and select the option to do a “root integrity check” it tells me those specific apps are missing. Is there any way to change the root integrity check to not look for those apps?
So I know this a lot of information but I need to write this down for all the steps I toke. I hope that this thread can help anyone with a Blu Neo XL device come to some information. If I can confirm from this forum that there is nothing that can be done. I feel then a law suit with Blu is in order and everyone should throw out there compromised phones. I have seen numerous other posts on this subject and so far NO ONE HAS ANSWERED EVEN ONCE. One pore guy had to keep bumping his thread of months until he gave up; atleast tell me its not possible! Here are the link I saw on this from here:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/help/tried-to-root-sort-blu-neo-xl-t3559702
Here are my main questions:
Is it possible to access the root (either via pc with command prompt or linux with terminal or even on the device itself) without rooting or unlocking the bootloader (since both seem to be impossible).
Can you extract a system.img file, modify it, then put it back to get together to flash it to a device without unlocking bootloader?
Infact can you modify any part of the rom or .imgs and flash it to spflash tools? (Or maybe I was doing wrong?)
Is there anyway to figure out how to modify the tamper bit if I have to find a way to get around the virus bug on my device that doesn’t allow me to use the “Volume up” button to confirm that I want to unlock the bootloader? (I’m not even sure if this phone has that, I just saw that for this oneplus and thought maybe it can be on all phones in a different way?) Here is a link on that-
https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-one/development/mod-reset-unlock-tamper-bit-t2820912
The goal is get rid of the virus that sends my data back to Chinese servers. Also, the goal is to get an answer from the community here to put this to rest.
If you need any information on this or want me to upload anything please let me know.
Thank you for your time!
Bump as I need hope.
I understand people may not have this phone but I need some sort of reply to confirm that this isn't possible. I want this thread to be the first post anyone sees if they type in "Blu Neo XL" for rooting purposes.
Even if anyone that has a phone that is similar that is affected, that would be anyone who has:
R1 HD
Energy X Plus 2
Studio Touch
Advance 4.0 L2
Neo XL
Energy Diamond

Waited around for awhile but now its time be obnoxious. I will bump my other thread as well and just start hi-jacking other threads until mods ban me or someone answers me for once.

Hey man, I didnt read through your entire post. But can't you just downgrade the version to one that is possible to root?
Or you can also get another phone that does have root as an option. Also, I don't think you should bump your own threads. Just wait it out, or ask in other threads for help.
Edit: Oh Man, I didn't even notice someone responded to this! Awesome.
It says in the rules to ask here. So I decided to ask here espcially since this phone doesn't have its own dedicated forum. I got a new phone about a month ago and its pretty good so far.
This is more of a lost cause but I bring this up just in cause other people get affected. I believe the Blu company had to pay the Justice department for this so they got away with it and thats no big deal now of days. lol

Also for those of you out there suffering, the above statement is not possible because the newer versions of Android OS have "version binding" so downgrading to an OS that is lower that way you upgraded to wont allow the phone to get pass the bios or whatever the android bios recovery start name is. (I don't remember right now) Even if you mod the recovery or bios file.
So here it is almost a year later from you writing this post and I have found myself in the same predicament you were once in and was hoping there was answers somewhere, but from the looks of it I am guessing I'm better off just breaking this phone in half and getting myself a new, virus free, root-able phone. Am I correct?
