[Q] flash image question - HTC EVO 3D

hey everyone. so my question is about the flash image gui. if I flash a kernel through it and reboot recovery, am I able to wipe the rom using superwipe right then and there? or do I have to reboot recovery again to make the kernel stick so superwipe doesn't touch it before flashing the rom. pretty sure that's clear. but if not let me know. thanks for everyone who looks and helps!

When using flash image GUI to flash a kernel. You don't need to go into recovery at all afterwards. Should be good. When installing a ROM with a custom kernel flash superwipe script then flash ROM in recovery boot phone then flash kernel VIA image GUI. Then test your wifi, 4g, data, calling etc.
sent from America...F__k Yeah!

Actually you had it right the first time. You flash the kernel first, reboot into recovery, wipe then flash the rom. Wiping won't touch the kernel you just flashed.

You should change this post as you could cause problems for people. If someone is changing from sense rom to an AOSP rom, or vise versa, you definitely want to flash kernel first with flash image gui.

Because of s-on I don't think that the superwipe script can affect the boot partition of the phone so your good with what you say OP.

Oh! Thats weird because thats how I have been doing it. Everything works for me. I been on just about all ROMS out there...from ICS to sense 3.5 and now the lastest firmware running imbredded ROM. Only once I had a problem with a kernel when I updated to latest OTA using my method above. I then used flash image gui to flash the stock kernel (boot.img) and everything worked fine after.

thanks everyone for answering! I was pretty sure the superwipe wasnt able to erase the kernel being 1.5, just wanted to have some clarification

[Q] Questions about installing new kernal without tripping counter.

First of all I am new to this, but I did my homework and installed codeworx's kernal and am currently running CoZ ROM.I was wondering how to install a different kernal without tripping the counter. Is it the same process that's included in the sticky (regarding installing custom binaries without tripping the counter) or does it require other steps? Also I see that some Dev's post kernal compatibility within their ROMs page, but if they don't is there any way to know what kernals are compatible with what ROMS, other than Stock based kernals usually work with Stock based ROMs?
I searched but didn't find anything regarding flashing a new kernal without incrementing the counter throughout the ATT SGS2 forums so I apologize if I missed something.
Any help is greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Justin
Flashing anything using CWM Recovery or adb will not affect the flash counter. To quote creepyncrawly in his thread about never incrementing the flash counter:

4.) Flash the ROM package of your choice using ClockworkMod Recovery and a CWM flashable zip package or Mobile Odin with any package[/SIZE][/B]
Your phone is now set up to flash custom software using ClockworkMod zipped install files in ClockworkMod Recovery. If you used and retained Mobile Odin, you can also flash custom software with it. Anything you flash on the phone using ClockworkMod Recovery, Mobile Odin, adb or terminal, will not affect the flash counter or invoke the warning triangle. Therefore, you can flash ROM's Kernels and Modems to your hearts content. Just avoid ever flashing anything containing a non-stock kernel with Odin or Heimdall from your computer. I would also caution against flashing any package with bootloaders. There is no valid reason to flash bootloaders on the SGH-I777 at this time, but some developers may include bootloaders in their CWM flashable zip files, or Odin flashable tar files.

Thank you,
When I flash new ROMS I know to backup/ wipe then flash using cwm. But if I want to install a new kernal such as entrophy512s how do I do so?

I think the safest thing to do when switching between kernels is to factory wipe. Depending on the ROM, sometimes it's ok to just wipe cache and dalvik (for example, you don't have to factory wipe when updating UnNamed).
OK cool thanks and then can I use android terminal once I put the zImage onto my SD card?

Huge +1 for mobile odin. It makes it super easy. Especially if you like switching between kernels alot.

You can flash the kernel package within CWM without needing to factory reset as long as they provide a CWM package which most here do. It'll just overwrite your current kernel. I do it fairly often myself especially to test out tweaks of my own.
Just remember that stock based kernels do not work with CM based roms or MIUI (which uses CM kernel anyways) roms and vice versa.
Personally, I always clear cache when manually updating most things and davlik as well if changing out the kernel. Wipe /data, /system and /cache when installing a new rom.

You should never need to wipe ANYTHING (not even cache/dalvik) when updating a kernel.
If a kernel requires wiping cache/dalvik it's doing something weird.

Very true, however, with past experiences, granted on a different phone, I've grown into the habit of wiping cache and davlik because of weird things. Either way it shouldn't hurt, but yes, generally not needed.
I've questioned the need to do a wipe with a new ROM install. Coming from the Cappy, most of the ROMS did a full wipe during the install. Why isn't this done with the GSII?
Thanks a lot guys really appreciate all the help!

Flashing From ICS to Pure Gingerbread

I am attempting to flash from Scott's CleanRom ICS version 2.1 back to the stock CleanRom version 1.5 and after wiping and flashing the phone boots to the HTC screen and then just sits on the half back-lit screen and doesn't fully boot. I am assuming this might just be a boot.img issue but if so I am not sure how to fix it? Could someone please fill me in on what the issue is and how I can fix it? Thanks so much.

You have to reflash the kernel. It's in the ROM zip file. Look for boot.img.
Grab your PC and plug in
flash the boot.img file like this in DOS "fastboot flash boot boot.img"
Thank you! Do I do this after flashing the rom or before?

use scott's cleanflash to flash boot.img first then go to recovery and flash the rom.
as far as i know, the rom should be in the sdcard before flashing the boot.img.

[Q] Bricked Phone?

After installing the Bulletproof 2.4 rom i flashed kernal using flash kernal gui app and then restarted phone. Now phone only reboots into bootloader/recovery. Is there any possible fix? Thanks
Well you can reboot into recovery so why not just reflash the rom.
i did that and when i reboot phone after rom installation it just goes back to bootloader
Did you make a backup? If so restore it.
If you don't want to and want to continue to flash the rom, flash the kernel via easy kernel flasher twice while In bootloader. Then flash your rom in recovery, be sure to do a full wipe.

thank you. i flashed the kernal twice and then installed the rom. Everything is back to normal. Thank you. Will i have to flash the kernal twice before every new rom installation? If so, why is that? Thanks again. I really appreciate the support

[Q] cubed kernel and codis rom

trying to get the cubed kernel working with the codis rom on my dna but every time i flash the kernel my wifi dies. also cant get the swipe to wake working. what kernel version does it say you have in the software menu in settings?
You have to flash the modules too. Fastboot flash the kernel, then flash the modules in recovery. Also you should read the cubed kernel thread, all of these answers could have been found there.

then i reboot recovery and flash the modules.
every time i try to flash the cubed kernel thats what i get for my version.
when i go back to cubed stock it works tho. just cant get it back to cubed 2.4.2

delete any boot.img file you may have in the folder with fastboot.exe. then paste the extracted boot.img from the 2.4.2cubed.zip you downloaded. also place those modules on your sd card
then fastboot flash boot boot.img
reboot to recovery and flash those modules
My guess is that the boot.img you have in the folder with fastboot.exe is the cued stock kernel ... could be a possibility that this could happen lol
just trying to help knock out all possible ways
i had the same thought earlier and thought i may have mixed up the boot.img. so i re downloaded the stock and the cubed kernel zips and re did all of it. still getting the same issue. do i have to wipe data you think? or factory reset?

You're definitely using a TWRP recovery made for JB hboot? @GtrCraft, did you put the right boot.img inside the zip?
Also, you can try flashing a custom JB kernel of your choice.
@dansou901 I believe so, flashing this (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2344254) work like a charm (except for the rom that hasn't got any wifi, ...)
How can i check to be sure?

For booting that ROM a CM kernel is needed. As you have installed one (if it works like you said), you need to install a JB Sense kernel (just pick one from Original Android Development section). Then reinstall SuperSense and you should be fine.
I'll give that a go and let you know
@dansou901 , i've used this boot.img (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2337389) because i've already been able to flash that rom as well.
but now i can't seem to get rid of my previous custom rom. i've done a factory reset, i wiped everything there is to wipe, i've flashed the above boot.img and supersense but it's still another custom rom on my device :s

That's a CM kernel as well. I told you to use a Sense kernel. Use this one for example: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2483489
and your recovery should work again as expected. Btw, which recovery did you install? Please give the link.
this is the twrp recovery.img http: // teamw . in / project / twrp2 / 140 (yeah, can't post outside links yet)
i'll give that one a shot

That one's made for ICS, if I recall correctly... Don't use it. Use this one instead: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2099513 But be sure to use a JB version.
After changing my recovery, finally i was able to flash the custom rom. I used the boot.img you gave me, but is that going to affect some of the features in the rom?
And i would like to thank you allready

No, it's not. You can however choose the kernel yourself as I said... But keep in mind that it has to be a JB Sense kernel (just read the OP of the kernel thread carefully, then you'll know). For recoveries, keep this in mind.

The boot.img in the SuperSENSE-dx5 zip is stock, every JB Sense kernel should work though
