What is the maximum resolution (horizontal and vertical) the Prime can drive on an external display? Or is it just a mirror of the 1280x800 screen?
HDMI maxes out at 2560x1600 (holy flubber that's big) but the ATP is likely optimised for approx ~1920x1200 (1080p) output. YMMV.

So, what am I going to get if I connect the Prime to an external monitor using HDMI-to-VGA adapter?

You should still be able to push 1920x1080.
When i connect to my Sony HD tv via hdmi the TV automatically sets it to 720p, is there a way to change that to 1080p on the tablet? Or is that something i have to change on the TV itself?
My understand from the readings i've done on that subject
If you connect your TFP to a TV through HDMI u'll get a mirror of it's resolution (720p) onto the TV and you TFP will be fully functional so you can navigate on it.
You will only be able to reach 1080p resolution if you playback a 1080p video but then the TFP display will shut off and only the TV will display.
I read that from another thread when i was researching the tablet before I purchased it, didn't actually test the 1080p playback theory
But when i connect mine to my TV I get 720p (and yes the TV supports 1080p).
VGA is 640x480 resolution. What you can actually get depends on the cable and adapter used.
According to Wikipedia it sounds like you can get up to [email protected] but in practice, I would look at the specifications for your adapter and look for a maximum or reccmended maximum resolution.
It's so fun to do math

Just received my HDMI cable (http://electroniccrap.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=&products_id=27)from electronicCrap, it works perfectly. It also works as a DVI cable for connecting to business projectors (without sound of course) with a small adapter such as this: http://www.amazon.com/Cables-Unlimited-ADP-3780-Female-Adapter/dp/B0018QTWH2
Great product if you need to do presentations or anything. Just be aware that most apps are fairly low resolution (ie will look pixelated) even if the tablet is outputting a full 1080p signal.
The only minor issue is the connector to the gTab, which is a bit bulkier than what is pictured on his site. This could be a problem with some cases, but it works well with mine (the FUSE).
Update 7/23:
-Cable works great on 1080p monitors and TVs.
-HW accelerated apps display at much higher resolution. Everything else is 1024x600 with poor (pixelated) scaling.
-Cable may not work on 720p TV's.
-May not display HW acclrrated 1080p properly on 720p TV even if other things work
-Audio is stereo only as far as I and others can tell. Does android as a platform even support 5.1?

...some [720p] TVs can handle the 1080p input and scale it down, while others cannot.
Lastly, playing a 1080p movie will not output to a 720p TV. For one reason or another when I played both Divx and H264 in 720p or other lower resolutions it showed up fine on my TV, however both Divx and h264 1080p movies just displayed a blank screen while they played fine on the display on the gtab.
Hope this helps some people...

Most (if not all) 720P TVs should be able to accept a 1080P signal and display it as 720P.
$30 seems like a lot of money for a cable.
Better than 50 for the dock just to use the hdmi

True not to mention $7 US shipping and $17 Canadian shipping.
(that said its currently on sale for $23 + shipping).

Actually the dock is $43 shipped world wide (with CC "welcome").
And beside the HDMI cable you get a supplementary charging solution, stand, 2 USB port and LAN port.
I got this cable, but it is not working for me. I have a 720p plasma and am wondering if the Gtab output does not work with 720p TVs. I know the Gtab is detecting the HDMI connection because the sound goes off on the Gtab. But on the TV, all I get is a blank screen saying no signal.
Information to add
Just my two cents since receiving this cable.
I have successfully used the cable on my 50 inch Samsung 720p TV with a Froyo, Gingerbread, and Honeycomb rom. Any graphics that are NOT accelerated by the tegra chip looks VERY pixelated, so bad its almost unusable. However watching movies on a Froyo rom using the hardware decoder look VERY NICE! Also games designed for the tegra chip look great also, ie. Riptide rush. Software decoded movies suffer from the same horrible pixelation. I have not been able to determine if the HDMI cable or the tegra chip for that matter can process and pass 5.1 audio channels, but regular stereo audio worked on my TV. If anyone knows if 5.1 channel audio can be passed I'd love to know.
Additionally, I could NOT get the cord to work on my 32 inch Samsung. I think some TVs can handle the 1080p input and scale it down, while others cannot.
Hope this helps some people and I hope we can get some graphics acceleration for Honeycomb soon...heard someone has a Notion Ink kernel with full graphics acceleration, can that be ported to the gtab?
updated op. cable works great for me on 1080 screens. yes, 30 is a lot for only hdmi. but it is compact and easy to carry compared to the dock. basically we are paying for the r&d costs. I am just glad this thing exists.
Does the cable work with honeycomb roms? And does the power have to be plugged in for the cable to work? I'm having no luck with video showing up on my tv with the HDMI cable hooked up. I running gtabcomb atm.

You needn;t plug the power in. Just connect your Gtablet to your TV via HDMI cable. But i don;t know if it is work with Honeycomb roms..
Got cable to work but you've got to have your tablet turned on before plugging it in.

G Tablet has no hdmi, You need the dock to go with it to connect hdmi Correction Thank You
Hi. I have the Motorola atrix, the TFP, and a 32 inch Westinghouse TV with HDMI out.
My atrix also has micro HDMI, and shows a picture on the TV with no problems. Movies and pictures work fine as well.
Today for grins I decided to hook up the TFP to the HDMI port and yes I did switch input to HDMI, and it recognized the connection on the TFP. On the TV it showed 480p and it played sound of the TFP, but no video. I looked in settings in both places to see if the input settings could be changed and didn't find much other than 3d settings.
I don't know a lot about this stuff I just figured HDMI was HDMI. I am assuming my cheap TV is bunk? If that's the case what are the specs I need for a TV to work with the TFP?
Thanks.

As a follow up, I turned off my prime while plugged into the TV. Then I turned it back on and a little android guy showed up on the TV screen and had 720p? I couldn't hit enter anything to accept this setting so then once it booted back up the screen went blank again.
After more reading, is it possible its the HDMI cable that is junk?
Audio plays just no video. If anyone has advice it would be appreciated.

Could the problem be that I'm using the Motorola micro HDMI cable that came with the atrix. Volume plays but video doesn't. Any advice would be great.

I have the same problem. An android logo shows saying "720p?".
Whenever I change the TV AV to the HDMI one, it says on the top left of the TV that it's 480p and then you have the android logo in the middle.
My PS3 works fine with HDMI when connected.
Any ideas on how to change that 480p that comes in the corner of the TV ? How to change to 720p ?
so i just got my mico hdmi cable and tried it on my tv. i'm running ICs and verything seems to work with the sounds. however the format on my TV is kind of odd. The TV shows a zoomed up format of my prime, it's not adjusted correctly. how do i fix this so i can get the right quality.
btw i know the TV is not the problem i already checked with other devices

You have to change a setting on your TV to scale it instead of displaying it in 16:9 mode. This is because the prime resolution is 16:10.
Another option would be to restart you prime with the HDMI cable still connected. Last time I tried that the prime adjusted to 16:9 and made the bottom toolbar thicker.
I just purchased the official Samsung Galaxy S3 11-pin MHL to HDTV adapter from Samsung.com as a replacement for the Allshare cast dongle, because the Allshare dongle only supports 720p output.
However, when I hooked the wired MHL dongle up to my GS3 and Vizio VW42L LCD TV, it was still outputting at 720p.
So, I called Samsung mobile support and bounced around from department to department for an hour. During the call, I was told:
-It's my TV that isn't compatible. (Although my Xbox360 and cable box both output at 1080p)
-It will only display 1080p when playing back 1080p media. (I test-recorded a 1920x1080 video on the phone and playback was still at 720p)
And finally, when my request was "escalated" to their higher support level:
-The GS3 will only output 1080p video to Samsung TVs.
Um...WTF? Is that the truth?
Samsung's own site says both "HDTV Universal Adapter" and "1080p" in the specs for the 11-pin dongle. Go to Samsung's support page and search for part number EPL-3FHUBEGSTA to see for yourself.
Has anyone else been able to output 1080p video with the OEM 11-pin dongle to a non-Samsung TV?
If the "compatibility" issue for non-Samsung TVs is accurate, doesn't their page for the S3 11-pin dongle constitute false (or at the very least, misleading) advertising?
Uhm. Isn't the Vizio VW42L a 720p tv? IIRC, its resolution is 1366x768.

Nope. Like I said, I have other HDMI inputs (Xbox 360, HD cable box, and a desktop computer set at 1920x1080 resolution) that all display correctly at 1080p.
I get 1080I on my 55" sony lcd and my 24" dell monitor, but no 1080P I rather have 720P than 1080I, but i cannot change it :crying:
Another MHL question from me.
Does the XZU support 1080p output over MHL? I have a feeling before the KitKat update that it did. With KitKat update, when I plug in the MHL to my monitor, the monitor reports a 720p signal. There was another post where someone stated you can change the resolution settings but I don't seem to have that.
I use mine with mhl latest kk build and it's 1080p I don't know where you can change the resolution. The only thing that bothers me is that the mhl 1 standard that the zu uses only supports 30hz

Thanks for the info. I tried two MHL adapters on two different monitors and both report 720p though I know these monitors will support 1080p through HDMI as I get that resolution when plugging in a monitor. Maybe something weird with the HDCP handshake? I'll try on my HDTV when I get home. Hopefully I don't have to go questing for a different MHL adapter (had to go through three to find one that would charge my phone while using HDMI out).
I have one that it charges my phone directly from the TV but the TV has one hdmi with mhl built in. If you use one that you needs 5v from charger or USB you should try the I9100(S3) mhl dongle works perfectly with our zu

Yes, same thing happens to me as well.
I bought this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/321336887491 and the output is 720p 60hz.
The image is blurry and it is very annoying
If I remember correctly same thing has happened both in 4.3 and in 4.4 (rooted locked bootloader)
Hi harisled, I haven't tried it on my HT setup yet but I think I know why it is not working (at least for me) on my computer monitors. I had forgotten that the MHL 1.0 spec only allows 1080p @ 30Hz until mr.joshuanice had mentioned it. The two monitors I tried it on initially are computer monitors so they probably don't support 1080p @ 30Hz. I'm guessing the HDCP handshake (or whatever it is called) reduced the resolution to 720p @ 60Hz which is supported by my monitor. However, this causes the monitor to upscale causing the image to be blurry (like you have experienced).
I will test it on my HT this weekend which should work (I remembered testing this out a while ago). The only thing that sucks is playing games @ 1080p. As some have experienced, playing PS Mobile games at 1080p resolution makes the game really sluggish (@ 720p is great). I remembered someone had show a screenshot of a menu which allowed you to change the resolution but it may have been a different Sony phone or a different ROM.
You are right, it did output 1080p 30hz on a tv

You can enforce the output format by dialing *#*#7378423#*#* then navigate to Service tests -> TV-Out Test -> Video format. Note that "Video format" will only be modifiable when the MHL cable is plugged in.

I know this is old, but is there an option to save the MHL-Setting in the Service menu permanently? After each reboot, the screen resolution is scaled to the default settings again.
Everybody who has problems with screen resolution can simply set the resolution and fps in the service menu under "second screen" .. For that type *#*#7378423#*#* in the phone dialer
For me its not even switching to 1080p when I select it in the service menu. It says reconnect but then again its set to 720p. Xperia Z and Z2 only outputing 720p. Are they even capable of 1080p MHL?
Is it possible the MHL cable is just crap?

The Z Ultra has MHL 1.0 or most likely 2.0 since 2.0 requires 900mA and therefore an external power source is needed (which my cable has) while 1.0 only requires 500mA, which is provided through a regular USB/HDMI. Both 1.0 and 2.0 support uncompressed 1080p and Dolby 7.1. MHL 3.0 was released just a month before the Ultra hit the market, so it doesn't have 3.0, which supports 4K and some other stuff.
The Z2 and beyond have MHL 3.0, and yes, it could be your cable. Be sure that it's 3.0 for the Z2 and 1.0/2.0 for the Z.
I tried 2 MHL1.0 adapters before and the output was 720p only for my Sony Tablet Z4...
Luckily I found the MHL3.0 adapter last night and the the output become 1080P 60Hz for my projector now. Try to find the MHL 3.0 from Taobao or eBay.
