after having reboot issue after upgrading to ICS, I sent my prime back to ASUS via RMA. After almost 4 weeks of sitting a in a waiting status they finally update my status to ready for shipping. There was one small change the serial number changed to one that starts with a C. I originally had on of the BK serial numbers. Im assuming they are just switching out my prime and the reason why I had to wait so long was for stock to show up. Anyone know anything about the primes with the serial numbers that start with C. I hope it doesnt have any wifi or BT problems let alone the ICS update problems.
That's from the newer batch. I got one too. Everything works great with mine, except for Wi-Fi and GPS. A few others posted that their C1's run perfectly, no issue with Wi-Fi or GPS. Hope yours is like theirs.

Ummm.. they probably couldnt fix your original one so they got you a new one from a new batch. From what I read getting one from this batch are slightly better than the previous ones, but then you have some that still crappy C1s. But I also heard one member just got a C1 batch that already had ICS installed and a bigger microfiber cloth (cant confirm it yet cause noone else has confirmed). Pretty much youll have to test it out yourself... It should work good if Asus directly shipped one to you.
My c1 works quite a bit better than my bcs. Wifi works great and everything runs smooth. I am very happy with it.

I have a c1. Just bought the only one that came in at best buy today. Wifi works good unless I'm over 20 feet from a router and then speeds plummit way way down. Sad thing is my 3g phone geta faster speeds than my prime hooked up to wifi from 30 feet away. I think people reporting no issues with c1 aren't testing their wifi signal strength from any distance other than close to the router. If their are people getting fast speeds from significant distances, what makes their unit perform better than ones that don't perform well? Can't be software as were all running the same stuff. So it must be a hardware issue then?
I wonder if it takes awhile they just give u new one. Its been about 18 days and no change in status.
I'm at 21 days and still showing "waiting for parts"... I'm sure theyre just going to mail new a different unit.. I guess parts are new systems. lmao

Don't get your hopes up too high....I have a C1 Prime, and I'm exchanging it as soon as Staples gets it in stock, it has major issues with the Sleep of Death.
That is really poor service that it takes that long to replace a tablet. If they know they need to replace it, then that should only take a couple days not weeks.

I don't get fast speeds from a distance, but it is good enough for my use, anyway I have I good wireless AP placed centrally in my relatively small house...
So I am satisfied.

Agreed, at this point it would be prudent for them to just replace the defect unit and send a new one. Then spend time fixing the other and sell as refurbished, would help to get their RMA times down drastically.
i will send my asus prime to them for black screen issue. so i guess i will wait for 1 month

I felt very fortunate last week when HHgreg apparently priced the prime incorrectly for $399.00. I immediately ordered one online and my local store had it in stock. First thing I did when I opened it up was to check for the ICS update and it started downloading it. My battery was at about 27% when the update started downloading and at around 20% when I attempted to install. After the install was complete I had the same issue as many others in that the screen banding was happening and so I called HHgreg to see if I could exchange it. The reason I mention battery % was that I had read somewhere that if the update was completed on a low battery that it could cause the issue that I experienced. They had one more in stock and allowed me to exchange. The next one I received was one with the serial number issue that would not even recognize there was an update available. I am now waiting on my third tablet to arrive but wandering if I should keep it. I hate to take it back seeing I got it for 349.00 after the 50.00 coupon but I dont see to many comments of people who are having no issues and are completely satisfied with the tablet. Please comment if its possible to have a prime that is functioning properly.
I also purchased my TP from HHgregg for 399. but i waited before I upgraded to ICS. I was nearly charged or i might have been fully charged. But the only Issue is my gps. wifi works from 35- 40 feet from the router anlong with my other 3 device's I use in my house. Been playing agry birds for hours not problem at all. Only once did it show that Baning issue when I started using the camera after the 4th picture it started. I shut the app down and restarted the prime. No problems using the camera app again so far. Never had a screen issue either. Ialso tested the wifi with my home router and my htc sensation how spot. both work fine.

I love mine, it works BETTER after ICS and it's your own fault you got impatient and borked your first one. Us with working Primes don't come on here and *****.
We just watch everyone else and try to help when we can. Maybe it's karma that the second one didn't work...cuz you screwed up your first one.
So respect the equipment. Either way if you wait or don't, it's a nice tablet.
willowwave,
your probably right , I was very anxious to update because I've been using an Acer Iconia for a couple of months now and was really looking forward to the update. Has nothing to do with respect for the equipment, whatever that would mean, just didn't know it would cause an issue with the update. Really I'm not trying to *****, I've just read so much negative and not enough positive about the tablet. Thanks for your letting me know that yours is working perfectly. By the way, I do not believe in Karma, I would say its more likely providence.

It's not his fault that he got two units that wouldn't update correctly. While it's true that it's best practice to do upgrades either plugged into the mains or fully charged, if the tablet didn't actually run out of charge in the middle of the update I don't see how that could affect anything.

Todd don't listen to him you did nothing wrong I updated to ICS as soon as I got my new one from HHGrregg with 20% battery life and it works perfectly fine with no lockups something is different in some Primes making this happen we just don't know what that is until Asus owns up to it.
PrimeTimeBro, thats good to hear, I really want to keep the device but unfortunately I've received two bugged devices. Hope that the next one is solid.
I had no problems with my TP during or after ICS install. There are other problems - but they had nothing to do with the firmware update.
No problems here.....other than dropping off my desk and cracking the screen in 2 places.
DAMN IT ALL TO HELL!!!!!!
Not your fault.....you just got 2 bad ones. I updated mine at 20% and have had no issues. Just return it and get one that works.....350 is still a lot to pay for a tablet that can't be updated.
I have returned two as well. Both had screen issues. I am still hoping to get a good one. I ordered two just in case this time from best buy. If i get 4 bad tablets I'm not sure what I will do... I really wish another company had the nice matching docks. I suppose i would continue this until either best buy bans me from buying more or the tf700 is released and i start the process over.
Don't worry, you will get one. Just keep returning them if there is problems. Asus will not tighten qc if people keep problem tablets. I am sure they directly correlate the % they accept as defective during manufacture to the number of returns they get.
I've yet to notice any problems with mine caused by the update. The only problem is that GPS still doesn't work lol but I wasn't expecting it to be fixed either.
EDIT: Forgot to mention the GPS works with WiFi, stuffs, but I can't connect to any satellites. Nothing new lol.

Rofl this is classic I like your thinking
Fully Functional since day 1 with honeycomb. Still fully functional after ICS. WIFI is fine and GPS is shocking. Apart from a slight back light bleed in top right corner everything is great.
I feel sooo fortunate that i have a working Prime after reading pretty much every thread dedicated too faulty devices.
My name is Optimus Prime and I send this message..
one works great before and after the update. if you wanna read more about good devices, just read the Positive Transformer thread on General section.
Gotta admit, you're pretty nice and all, giving Asus so many chances.
I received a Champagne gold unit from Amazon, charged the battery up, connected to my Wifi and got the ICS update notification.
It loaded with zero problems and I have had no problems with it since then.
I cannot say if my TP has GPS issues because I have no expectation of using GPS on a Wifi only product. (.02)
No probs here just had one reboot using some app cant remember what
Just got to get a good case and protector from uk
I did have a few lock ups and random reboots after ICS, but a factory rest took care of all that. No issues anymore.
i still havent updated my hhgregg to ICS due to some games not running correctly. one of which is dead space. Once i finish that then i will probably update and hope i dont run into any issues.

I really don't know where the 1% figure comes from. Just received my Prime, Amazon, C1 serial. I am on my 4th attempt to get a good one. Same thing. Bad bleeing (even worse than previous ones), weak WiFi (4mps should be at least 15mps), WiFi drops with BT (drops from 4mps to 200kps).
I'm going to have to return this one to the store and order a new one again. 5th attempt. This is getting old.
If the stock is low maybe they resend devices that other returned? (is it posibble?)

Rumor is, they're removing BT, WIFI, and a screen from the marketing specs, so you're really expecting too much for them to be working.

The spex on the 700 series look great, but after seeing two botched TF launches in one year, I'll be damned if I buy another Asus tablet without plenty of satisfied user testimonials upfront.

Whenever I get a tablet that works. Mathematically, since there is only "1% of defective units", my changes are looking better and better
I got my new prime today. Now its also a C1 and surprisingly everythings works fine. Even GPS works! The only problem now is that I got two freezes and reboots today, but this may be related to the restore from Titanium to the new unit.
No 6 and counting. This one has infamous WiFi speed drop. Maybe no 7 will be good :-D

First off, I think it's an awesome tablet, nice screen, damn quick, and custom rom running, it's great BUT as we know wifi/gps issues. I'm not jumping ship to the iPad because personally I think i'll probably end drowning than be saved, but let's not turn into ipad vs prime and whatnot.
I pretty much have 1 day left to return the prime to the store and I'm not 100% sure what to do, although I feel like I'll probably end up sticking with it as I'm not entirely convinced the TF700 will be that huge of a difference.
GPS: Nonexistent, couldn't get a lock at all:
Bluetooth: I tried sending some photos from my nexus while streaming pandora on the prime and it seemed ok but when accessing a page on tapatalk it felt like it was slower. I don't have a bluetooth mouse, or headset to test it better.
WiFi
I'm not exactly sure if my tablet is suffering from the WiFi weakness.
Here is the scenario:
I have two ap's at home on 2 different channels. One on first floor and one in basement.
I was pretty much right in the middle of them and I ran WiFi analyzer on both my galaxy nexus and the prime and to my surprise both had very similar dbm and both had very similar speed test results.
My galaxy nexus was averaging at about -80 dbm
My prime was averaging at about -70 dbm or so.....
My laptop was no surprise better.
BUT at work:
I'm using a tenants AP, it's a bit strange. (I work as security and yes they gave me permission and the key to use it)
Galaxy Nexus will average at about -89 dbm and it will have enough WiFi bars showing in blue and i will be able to use the connection and browse around.
Prime will average at about -80 dbm but it will not catch a connection for me to browse, the first and/or second bar will either stay gray or it will just drop the connection completely.
Meanwhile my laptop is fine. There is an occasional drop of connection on both nexus and laptop but I feel like the AP is to blame.
But then why isn't the prime getting a lock enough for me to browse even though dbm is better?
Any ideas? Is this a keeper?
Down the road I'm planning to get a dock for it aswell but not sure any issue would really affect my experience there.
Just return it if you are unsure then if you have regrets you can buy another
Sent from my PG86100 using Tapatalk
Return it! This thing is just a ticking time bomb, and all Asus does is say hang in there, a fix is coming, meanwhile your 30 days are up in smoke and you have no choice but to keep it.
I wouldn't feel this way if the first Prime I bought didn't have a washed out screen along with all the other defects. Upon contacting Asus they basically told me to return it, so I did. I got a C2O model, champaign color, 64gb. It had gorgeous, vibrant colors, no light bleed, GPS that worked somewhat, wifi that was acceptable but still had the wifi/bluetooth problem.
Eight days later I was at a Chicago Rush game so my daughter could get her Spirit award for cheer. I was sitting in my seat, wiped my screen off because I wanted to record the event and noticed when the light shined on my screen what looked like very fine scratches on the black bezel. Upon further examination I noticed if I rotated my prime the scratches had a rainbow effect. In my head I went OH NO!, I am a jeweler and know what rainbow flash means, stress cracks.
This occurs all the time in gemstones, they get stressed during cutting or mining and the stress can get much worse or break, and thats whats happening to a lot of peoples Primes, while docked. Stress is causing their screens to break, which Asus chalks up to user abuse, BS. I treat my "Toys" with care, I don't have a lot of money to blow on thi stuff so it needs to last. I sold my First gen Ipad a month ago to help pay for this thing.
Good luck in whatever you decide, I know I loved my Prime but, man, I would be pissed at myself for seeing all the warning signs and not taking heed.
I'd return this one. Gary says something is coming in a couple of weeks....repair parts are arriving at ASUS....
I'd give ASUS about a month, first to see what the surprise is, and to give ASUS a chance to get any "changes" into inventory. Then buy your new one.
If you saw nothing truly wrong with your unit just keep it. I've had mines since 12/22 and had no issues at all. One of the first ones. All it took was my 1 purchase to get a great unit. Nothing will be better on Android or comparable till around end of June at the earliest.

I have also had mine since christmas (BCOKAS serial) and honestly.. I have had nothing to complain about. It has gotten wifi everywhere I have wanted it to, the gps is there when I am outside (not that id ever use my tablet for gps), and the screen is b-e-a-utiful and SUPER bright. I bought the keyboard dock to go along with it, and the battery life is outstanding. I can use this baby all day and still have some battery life left when I go to bed.
In the end, though, it comes down to personal preference. ASUS has made a statement that there are repair parts coming... so worst comes to worse you can send it in to them.
Return it.
Either for exchange where hopefully you will get an additional amount of time to play with it and decide, or for cash.
If for cash you may have to wait a while for another to show up if you decide you can't live without it, or you can buy something less stressful.
I have finally decided that without the right software and ability to take handwritten notes properly that I don't care how cool, amazing and sexy the hardware is (and oh boy is it gorgeous hardware, especially with (then without, then with, etc) the keyboard dock. It just doesn't work regarding my use cases and specific needs.
Damn shame.
I can't say I didn't expect these responses. But ill admit it's a rough choice. If asus gets new parts I'm hoping they won't their customers in the dark.
I was quite shocked at the results from wifi range on phone and tablet and I think I'm kind of lucky.
Mine is a C10K serial. I'm not exactly how top notch the wifi is suppose to be so I don't have much to compare to but when comparing to my phone that gets great wifi reception, results are almost identical which simply makes me believe its fine.
If the screen cracks, well I bought warranty for a reason. Ultimate decision will probably be tomorrow morning and ill see how I feel when I pick it up
You're running a custom rom, so you unlocked the bootloader, voided warranty.

I never noticed a problem with the TFP WiFi when I had one. Granted, I wasn't comparing side by side with another device - I was just using the TFP, and WiFI signal never bothered me.
Totally ignoring the comparison with your Nexus, does the WiFi connection cause you trouble? If so, return it. If not, keep it and enjoy.

Not sure what you mean by this. When you unlock, your serial number gets marked in their system and your warranty is forever lost.

The serial number is for that specific tablet. If i return it to the store, and the store accepts. It is no longer my concern as they accepted it in the way it was.
If i decided to get another one, new serial.
If i keep it and it gets damaged somehow, and i get warranty replacement = new serial.
see what i mean?

Last day tomorrow.....I still don't know, was on hold for 30 minutes with asus and nobody ever answered, will try again tomorrow.
I finally got one on number 6 that gets good WiFi I'm not letting this go but Bluetooth does drop WiFi down from 18mb/s same room as router Bluetooth takes it down to 3-4mb/s. So I go from 18mb/s down to 3 or 4mb/s with Bluetooth. I don't use Bluetooth that much though.
I am currently looking to buy a TPrime but obviously after reading all the issues I'm a little hesitant.
I have been reading through Gary Keys posts and wanted to know if anyone knew about any recent batches of TPrimes that have had the issues (wifi/BT/GPS/reboots) resolved.
I am in WA, Australia.
Should I be looking for a later batch model or should I just wait for the infinity? (I'm not too bothered about full HD screen though, I just want all the hardware working as it should...)
I have searched for this info but couldnt find an sufficient answer.
Thanks in advance.
Aside from maybe being more precisely assembled, nothing much has changed for quite some time with the TF201. Some are good, some are not. Sort of reminds me of Alpha Romeo cars. Great to look at and if you get a good one, its a keeper. I was lucky. I have a C1 that is a keeper. The latest firmware improved it. The GPS works. The Wi-fi is great. Minimal screen bleed. Stock browser infrequently crashes.

So you think I should be looking for a C1 model revision? Is there any indication of the model number on the box so I can check before I purchase?
Thanks for the advice mate!
There are C3s now in the market. There is a sticker in the box that says the serial number, just take a look at it
I picked a random one when i bought mine, C2 SN and it works perfectly, GPS is indeed a bit weaker than other devices but it works good.
All in all no issues and loving my device.
I just want now my .21 update!! (Not rolled out yet for Germany models )
Awesome
It would be great if Gary Key would throw some official thoughts on this. I PM'd him but I guess he must be busy at the moment...
So the later the C revision, the better...
Mixed results for me in the last couple days with C2s.
I got a C2 two nights ago that had a backlight problem at the lower left. It was unusually bright from the corner and diagonal up to the top center. That left side, probably 40% of the screen, was like that till I gave it to a coworker and the same area went dark. If I flexed it a little, it would flicker back and forth. Returned that one ASAP.
Drove 20 miles to the next nearest store with stock replacement. This second C2 is good from what I can see this evening.

Bougth one for my girlfriend week ago and in the serial number reads "C3". It came with ICS .15 firmware out of the box. Havent noticed any hardware flaws. After the latest update I uninstalled Flash, cleared all data from default Browser and installed flash back. I havent noticed any freezing since then when browsing internet.
Id say go ahead and get this awesome device.
Anymore thoughts on this?
Thanks guys
Like others have said, mine works as good as it will ever be, but not perfectly. I am now at terms with it haha.
If I had to do it again I would rebuy my prime. For me its just the OCD in me that wants EVERYTHING to work so GPS bothers me.
As far as screen bleed, I had a little and fixed it. Then it came back again, I probably opened my prime too many times hehe.

I've got a c2 and everything seems to working beautifully granted i havent tried anything with gps as i never use it, it just eats battery as far as im concerned.
Just make sure you get one from a store with a good returns policy. I plan to buy another one, just to use till the Infinity comes out and then i'll return/sell it. I live in South Africa, so they're ridiculously overpriced here. Buying from the UK and could probably sell it for more here after using it a bit...
I'm in western Australia and there are a couple of stores that I should be able to return to. I just want to be as sure as I can about the later revisions being better than the earlier ones

Update from my previous post, my second C2 has no apparent flaws. I have yet to try BT with WiFi but that's not a priority for me. WiFi and GPS work fine. I have postponed updating to the latest firmware so I'll see if performance changes. Happy with this one
I agree with the suggestion to buy from a shop you can easily exchange or return it to if something is wrong. The only gotcha is actual stock. They're in short supply still. I had to drive out of my way about 50 miles round trip (understated in my previous post). The next one in stock was 180 mile round trip here in SoCal (to Victorville).

Got one from Amazon last Friday and it was a C2 serial, I had hoped it would be C3!! Slight light bleed, GPS non existent and WiFi range not great at all. Never tested the BT and WiFi together but decided to return it today. I may go into PC World and buy one of them if they have a good returns policy when I get my refund from Amazon. The ones in my local PS World have a C3 serial number, at least the display model. Checked the GPS on it as well and did not work :-(
Cheers,
M
Really?
Well that scuppers the idea about c2/3 models then....
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA
I got a C2 serial Prime in Brisbane, Australia last week. Wifi is perfect, bluetooth works great, but GPS is non-existant. I have applied all known GPS fixes and still zero sat signal.

Same deal with the one I got from Amazon in the UK last week :-( Have you applied the .21 update? Is the WiFI draining the battery quicker now??
Cheers,
M
im going to be buying the prime this early December and i want to know if anyone knows what serial numbers relate to latest batch?
I just got what I believe to be a brand new Prime via an RMA warranty repair. The one they sent me has a CA****** series S/N.
But are you planning to buy one of these new? They have been discontinued as I am sure you know. At this point, you can get an Infinity for maybe a few bucks more than a Prime, I would go that route if I was you. They are a better all around performer in every area from everything I have read.
My fairly new one starts out C30KAS
I was surprised at all the anger on these forums when I came here because I wasnt experiencing all the problems others were. I can tell you though that the wifi is definately still not perfect.

What kind of problems? speed or stability? My Desire HD phone is 65Mbps, i kinda expect more than that on the prime?

As much as i want the latest release I purchased Prime 2 hours ago
Infinity costs £599, Prime is £389 - no one should pay that much for a tablet, it has its own set of problems and limited stock. I worry if i go for it, it might turn up with a fault and then there will be no stock to exchange. I rather wait for another future release, faster CPU, usb 3.0 ports, 5Ghz wireless and etc...

Mine has performed well also. I had to send my original BC series Prime in for the green camera issue and got a brand new one back from Asus. The wifi works perfect in my house, and my router is downstairs on the other side of the house so I don't have the weak wifi issue others have complained about. I use it at home about 95% of the time.
But that being said, if I was buying a new or lightly used tablet, I would get the latest and greatest. I'm still considering selling this one and upgrading just because I like to do that LOL.
i got one now, all works fine apart from issue with light bleed and slightly wobbly screen, amazon sending new one on monday, dont know how many i have to go through to get good one but the hardware is very very nice.
Its C5....... serial!
