[Q] USB connection problem - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
Yesterday I tried to install CF-Root via Odin. The process wouldn't work as I got stuck on:<ID:0/009> Added!!
<ID:0/009> Odin v.3 engine (ID:9)..
<ID:0/009> File analysis..
<ID:0/009> SetupConnection..
So I tried changing USB ports and re-installing drivers.
Since then my PC (win7 64bit) does nothing when I connect my phone, I tried KIES connection troubleshooter and it made no difference. I tried uninstalling drivers and KIES several times now. Still, neither KIES nor my PC can see phone.
The only thing that happens when I connect my S2 is short bleep on my phone and message saying MTP initialisation and MTP connected.
Any help please?

Different USB cables, then different PC given you've already tried different USB ports & uninstalling/reinstalling Kies/drivers.
One little thought just popped into my head tho before you do that, when you've got Odin fired up & the phone connected via USB, have you checked task manager or similar & made doubly sure Kies or any of its associated processes aren't running ? Odin needs the drivers to work obviously, but doesn't like it/normally won't work if Kies/its processes are running at the same time.
If you've already done all of the above (minus trying it on another PC/different version of Windoze), does the phone boot normally i.e do you still have stock firmware installed/working on the phone after the flash you tried barfed ?

I don't think it's the cable or phone as it worked before I re-installed the drivers and KIES. Can't do anything in ODIN since my PC is not detecting my phone at all.
I still have stock rom etc because I never actually got to the point of flashing.
Have tried several ports now and still, nothing happens on my PC when I connect the phone:/

No it doesn't. But it used to do before I started mucking about with my drivers and reinstalling them.
Phone seems to be connecting just fine, I get the USB icon in the upper left corner and notification saying MTP connected. Any ideas?
Thanks

Ok... so it looks like PC can finally see my S2 again.
Unfortunately, I am still stuck on:
<ID:0/010> Added!!
<ID:0/010> Odin v.3 engine (ID:10)..
<ID:0/010> File analysis..
<ID:0/010> SetupConnection..
... when trying to flash CF-Root via Odin.
Does anyone have any ideas please? I'm running out of options here.
Thanks

Usual story is user not using Samsung cable not using mainboard USB port not flashing correct file not following the instructions .
Total removal of Kies and all registry settings followed by clean install .
Thats it not much else in the fix my USB list apart from dirty USB .
jje

If your pc see's your phone it's defo something you have or have not done!!
Thats why I said forget kies and odin and asked if pc sees it

Are you plugged directly into a USB port on the computer, and not a hub, or something with a USB pass-through, like a keyboard?
Someone else was having issues, and turned out they were plugged through their keyboard pass-through. Once they plugged directly into the computer, they were fine.

I'm plugged in directly to motherboard ports and using Garmin satnav cable.
I tried using original samsung cable but nothing happens when I connect my phone with it. In other words PC doesn't see the phone when connected via samsung cable.
Any ideas?

So... shows connected and partially works with Garmin satnav cable. Doesn't show connected at all with Samsung cable.
Sounds like issues with both cables. More severe with the Samsung cable.
Try another cable altogether.

try removing battery and insert it again.

Lol, what has battery go to do with the USB issue of OP over here
@OP , try running 'Odin' as administrator and see, if the same problem persists then try Cleaning the 'Micro usb port' of the phone and see

[q] help bricked my galaxy s2

I'm screwed! I was installing
MODEM_I9100XXKE4_REV_02_CL1009835.tar.md5
CODE_I9100XWKE7_CL215725_REV02_user_low.tar.md5
GT-I9100-CSC-XEUKD1.tar
and something happened in Odin3 and it froze, so I took the battery out and tried to restart it and now all I get is a blue and yellow screen that says Android System Recovery. I don't have anything backed up on the device, it didn't come with a microSD card, and it now says
Deleting Cryption Meta Data
-Copying media files....
#manual mode#
updating application....
applying multi-CSC
and that's it. When I hit reboot phone all I get is a screen with a triangle and an android symbol and when I hit apply update from sd card, same symbol, even when I tried to put a .TAR file on my dad's EVO microSD card and put it into the galaxy.
Also, now the USB cable doesn't recognize my phone for some reason so when I go back to ODIN mode it says
Product name - GT-i9100
Custom Binary Download - Yes (1 count)
Current Binary Samsung Official
When I try to restart the phone, it goes straight to the android recovery screen mentioned above, where I can't do anything, and then when I get into the Odin mode, it won't recognize the usb cable so I can link up to Odin3 V1.83 on the computer. Also tried the usb cable on other computers didn't find my phone. Also, as of right now it's not rooted, but I was in the process of rooting, when I realized I missed the Over the Air step so when I Odin3 an insecure.TAR file the WIFI was broke so S2 Root kept saying can't find usb connection even though it was connected, and somewhere along the line when I was trying to restore the radio's by installing the 3 files above, when it crashed something messed up? Now I can't do anything. PLEASE HELP
SO I AM STUCK! Please help????????

I know this topic is old, but I am essentially having the same problem, I don't think it was really solved for the first guy, he can't flash the original rom using odin, because odin doesn't recognize his phone. And that is my issue too, I'm able to get into download mode/odin mode whatever, I plug in the usb cable, nothing, odin doesn't recognize it, I don't get a little sound like I do when I usually plug in a usb cable. Please any ideas would be appreciated.

Try different versions of Odin (for example, if you're using V4, try V3 1.3 & V3 1.85 and vice versa), try different USB ports (particularly if you're using a port attached to a hub. You need to use a powered port), different USB cables & finally different PC's/different versions of Windoze if you need to.
Also, when you fire up Odin, check Task Manager in Windoze & make absolutely certain Kies or any processes associated with it (if you're not sure what these are, Google/search for them) are not running at the same time. As I've said, you need the drivers that come with Kies to use Odin, but Odin won't work if Kies or anything associated with it is running at the same time.
Try uninstalling Kies on your PC (you need the drivers that come with Kies for Odin to work), rebooting, reinstalling Kies (search for it), rebooting.
If none of that works try cleaning the USB socket of the phone a Q-tip (cotton bud) & some isopropyl alcohol. And if that doesn't work, it might be a case of the USB circuitry of the phone being shot (unless you haven't tried the above steps or are not following the right steps, which we'll never know because we're not there with you).
Was also having the same problem. I managed to get round it by flashing an I9100 package with all the files (PDA, PHONE, BOOT, CSC, PIT) and ticking re-partition. If I'm right, this completely wipes the phone and flashes this over, basically leaving you on a fresh slate.
Hope I helped!

Using PIT files is not recommended more brick a phone by flashing PIT than rescue it .

Odin does not recognise S3

Hi,
I followed all of the steps in CF's post about how to root the phone.
When I put the phone into download mode, and connect the USB cable Odin doesn't recognise it.
But when my phone is normal, it comes up as COM:3
I am using the stock cable, updated version of Kies, tried both debugging on and off, and have the latest drivers.
I also switched from USB 3.0 to USB 2.0 port, and same thing.
First time rooting my phone.
Help please.
Thanks

Hi
I don't understand what you are trying to say, but I tried on all 4 of my usb ports and it didn't work.
I know they all work as I use a laptop and currently have a mouse, keyboard and external hdd connected
Have you try with other usb cables?

Hi
So I tried to connect to another computer and it still doesn't work.
I also tried 2 different cables, and all the USB ports on the computer.
I also tried factory resetting the phone.
Do I need any pre-installed software on the phone itself?
I live in Australia, and bought the phone online.
I got the french version, as it came pre-installed with SFR bloatware.
Any response from your PC when you plugged in? Did your PC even try to install driver?
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
Hi,
Yes it installed the drivers, although i didn't install Kies as it wasn't my computer.
I tried with USB debugging off and on,
It must be installing a wrong driver.
Try this driver :

This while the phone is in normal mode.
While in download mode, Odin doesn't even recognise that the phone is connected, even though Windows makes the sound that device is connected.
Use a PC laptop has been reported multiple times with this very problem .
This while the phone is in normal mode.
............
What is normal mode ?????
Odin only works in download mode.
jje
Normal mode is when the phone is like everyday use.
Turn it on, put in sim card code, and phone is ready to use.
This is normal mode.
What I am saying is that Odin does not recognise while in download mode, but it does recognise while in 'normal' mode
Why don't you try using another PC?? It's so strange that the phone isn't detected in download mode.
I have already tried another PC, with all updated drivers.
This was an actual desktop, and i tried all USB ports and it didn't even recognise whilst in 'normal' mode.
Maybe its my phone?
Only reason I want to root my phone is because of 4.1 and to get rid of touchwiz

Install Samsung Kies to get the necessary drivers. After that, before starting Odin, kill all Kies processes in Task Manager!
Also, I think Odin is not fully compatible with Win 8.

[Q] Stuck at cache/modem/DO NOT TURN OFF TARGET on Odin for Stock2.1

I don't have any USB device connected other than the mouse on PC. i have even tried on my laptop with no mouse.
I have downloaded pit file and uvjfd.tar two times from the forums.
I have tried flashing multiple times from both my PC & laptop using Odin 3.0 v1.0, v1.85, v3.07(latest), EZOdin v1.70 and installed Samsung USB drivers multiple times, even downloaded latest driver version from official Samsung Vibrant page.
I have tried flashing from all possible USB ports on my PC & laptop wherever the phone was being recognized. But now with the latest official Samsung Vibrant drivers, my phone is not being detected by any USB port on my PC.
But whenever I have flashed, Odin is stuck at Cache or Modem or recently(with latest samsung drivers), DO NOT TURN OFF TARGET !!
I have even tried flashing through Heimdall 1.3.1 but the zadig.exe shows the device only as 'Gadget Serial' no matter how many times I try, and installs the driver with device as Gadget Serial under libusb in Device Manager and I also tried by updating driver as Samsung Composite USB as mentioned in readme. Either Way Heimdall frontend will not flash and says "Failed to detect compatible download-mode device".
Edit: I tried with another USB cable, of LG GS500v, and Oh Lord Jesus, Odin flashed past it. Great, time to buy a new Samsung USB cable, now!

Similar Problem but different results.
Hi!
Whomever can help me, please help me. Right now, I am on stock Froyo 2.2 after the factory reset so this is how I got it but it is rooted only. I am trying to overwrite CWM because I cannot get into its recovery no matter how many times I flash it. Odin just will not recognize my phone when I am in download mode. When my phone is on, it will allow the mass storage and that works but when in download mode, my PC says unrecognized devide. I have a feeling that is the problem and I have updated the drivers several times, especially from Samsung but to no avail. Does someone have a solution to this problem? I want to go to Avatar ROM with my phone which is Jelly Bean and have seen its possible but I feel CWM is holding me back.
Thank you in advance!

Can you explain the steps your taking when you try to get into odin
Sent from my SGH-T959 using xda app-developers app
The steps I take is put the phone into download mode by pulling the battery and then holding both the volume up and down then reinsert the battery. It shows the download screen. I then start odin and I have tried version 1.7 and the latest version of 3.0.7. Then I plug my phone into the USB port and windows pops up saying unrecognized device. I have reinstalled drivers several times. Now to describe my desktop is that it is a pentium III 550 Mhz...and old computer and running Windows XP Professional. I am able to do the mass storage when the phone is on normally so it recognizes it that way though. I have tried different USB ports on it as well so just unsure. I have rooted the phone and have superuser app access. ROM manager was supposed to have flashed the recovery mode but it never goes into the CWR mode either and its version is 2.5.1.2 which I have seen work on these phones in videos on YouTube so guess I am trying a different route so I can play with the mods to find a ROM I like. I was going to try the Avatar ROM for the vibrant but just cannot seem to get to the point where I can get the ROM flashed. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Keep the battery in and lull up Odin. Cut off the phone and hold both volumes while inserting USB hopefully the computer will then recognize it

USB cable does make difference. And USB ports even on the same computer. Check also your phone's drivers. Finally, try out Heimdall one-click package for t959, it is more powerful and sensitive than Odin.

I'm also stuck on cache & I have tried more than one USB cable. Is there something else that I might be doing wrong? I'm completely uninclined technologically. The fact that I got my phone into download mode after 'bricking' is a feat in itself. Now what do I do when I'm stuck??

Great that you could get it to the download mode.
Follow these steps:
1. Make sure that you have the correct drivers installed for your Operating System. Preferably, download the latest drivers. You can verify when your device is recognized when connected in download mode.
2. Make sure you follow this thread for Odin flashing http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=849028
3. If unable to flash using ODIN successfully, try with different USB ports, on same computer or a different one, say, a laptop.
4. If still unable to do so, try with different USB cables (any micro-usb should do).
In this way, you should by trying multiple alternatives at each step you should be able to eliminate the options and figure out what is really creating the problem in your flashing. Trust me my friend, this has not go anything to do with technology. just follow the steps, try alternatives and you would resolve this. Do post back on thread, if you have any queries.

[Q] Dead Note I717 Please Help!!!

Hello All,
OK so here is the deal. I have done a ton of searching and reading and as it helped a lot I still have this issue. I bought this Note about a month ago used. I never rooted it nor do anything at all with it but literally make calls or text. I plugged it in the other night before bed to charge woke up the next day to find my note completely dead. after much research i found what i Believe to have is the dreaded SDS and that many people have this issue but with the S3 and Note 2. It did start freezing and such before it died but I never upgraded firmware or anything. So after my research I plugged the phone up to my Win 7 laptop and it began installing drivers but then failed to install. did more research and found that it had the missing qhsusb_dload driver. So after more research I finally found driver and installed it and now my laptop recognizes it but Kies does not recognize it nor does odin3 v3.07. now odin3 v1.85 on the other hand does recognize it. so it tried to flash the stock Rom but nothing odin never finishes. Is their any way at all to come out of this Sudden Death Syndrome and bring my phone back to life?? Please all help on this would be a god send!!! Also just to be clear this phone does nothing I get no picture, sounds lights/led or anything. the only sign of life this phone has is that when i plug it in to my laptop it gets recognized.

With Odin open, phone off, try the holding down volume and plugging up the usb as suggested. If you get download mode, you should be able to tell if Odin shows it in the block. Then try your flash.

yea I've tried that with odin3 v3.07 but it never got recognized but odin3 v1.85 did recognize it. it shows the block and i did everything it starts but never finishes. What exactly do you mean when you say Kies does not recognize yoir phone? Are you referring to the firmware version? As long as your computer recognizes the device, recognition of the firmware does not matter. Put phone in download mode, open Kies, tools, firmware recovery/upgrade and follow the prompts. Have your serial number handy because it will ask for it. When you enter the model number, use all caps (SGH-I717). 440Bro has a simple to follow guide here but they are closing the airplane door otherwise I would link it. Good luck.

Ignore that and run the firmware update and recovery. As long as the computer recognizes the device it should work.

Be sure you are using the stock usb cable and connected to a powered port. Also charge the battery fully before you begin.
What does the PC popup or do when you connect your device? Does the device show up in "my computer" ?
Since you can't see anything on the screen I want you to try something.
1. Pull battery and write down serial number
2. On PC open Kies, click "tools - Firmware Upgrade and Initialization"
3. Type in SGH-I717 (all caps)
4. Type in serial number
5. Replace battery
6. Hold volume down and power button together for 6 seconds then release both.
7. Press volume up button
8. Plug phone into PC and proceed with kies firmware recovery.
Hopefully that might get you somewhere.

I tried as you suggested but Kies will not recognize it so the Start Update tab stays greyed out. When I connect the phone to the PC I hear the PC do its sound and I see it show up in my device manager ( Not in my computer ) but in device manager of the computer and it shows up in the device manager as this " Qualcomm HS-USB QDloader 9008 (COM8) ". Now when I use Odin3 V1.85 the block highlights in yellow and says ( COM8). I do not think the phone is recognizing correctly because I stated earlier the first time I plugged this phone into my PC which was after this issue started never before while it was functional but when I plugged it up it started to install the drivers but would fail. it would say in the device manager of my PC that I had a missing driver. After looking for this mysterious driver called "qhsusb_dload driver" for hours I finally found it and installed it and then the phone installed without failing afterwords. The only sign of life my note has is when I plug it into my PC I hear the dong-dong sound that's it. With Odin3 I do not even have to do any type of volume/power combination as right when I plug it in Odin3 say's " <ID:0/008> Added!! " I then click on PDA and im prompted to choose the file. I choose file " KIES_HOME_I717UCMD3_I717ATTMD3_1117019_REV02_user_low_ship.tar.md5 " and hit start and this is what I get
<OSM> Enter CS for MD5..
<OSM> Check MD5.. Do not unplug the cable...
<OSM> Please wait..
<OSM> KIES_HOME_I717UCMD3_I717ATTMD3_1117019_REV02_user_low_ship.tar.md5
<OSM> Checking MD5 finished Sucessfully..
<OSM> Leave CS..
<ID:0/008> Odin v.3 engine (ID:8)..
<ID:0/008> File analysis..
<ID:0/008> SetupConnection..
It does nothing else unless I unplug it and it then tells me
<OSM> All threads completed. (succeed 0/ failed 1)
<ID:0/008> Removed!!!
Ive left it without removing for hours with nothing. Is this rather common if a phone has the SDS issue?
I'm sorry to hear you are having all this trouble. The fact that odin recognizes it tells me there is some life left in your device. Kies not recognizing it is puzzling. You either have bad drivers, or a bricked device. I would try another PC and see if kies will recognize it, or if you can complete a flash on odin. If not I would send it to www.mobiletechvideos.com If it's bricked jtag repair is $40 bucks.
Try it on a different computer or laptop

Kies has a retarded amount of checks...
Use Odin. It's for us advanced users to manually flash when kies does this.
That's why Samsung releases the .tars...
They know this happens.
If Odin recognizes it, IT'S NOT BRICKED.
