I wonder if anyone's looked in to this? Could be huge - most of us have a dead simcard slot - I wonder if there's a way to hack in an sdcard reader to the hardware?
What dead MicroSD card slot?
Do you mean the slot that has the serial # info and has nothing to do with ab SD card?

He said dead sim card slot, not dead MicroSD card slot. The OP clearly realises the slot has nothing to do with an SD card. Seems you have misunderstood or not bothered to read it properly but nevertheless im sure the pretty much redundant piece of plastic with the serial info is something that I'm sure a lot of TP users would be prepared to sacrifice if they could mod in a card reader.
If you're going to hack anything then hack the USB port to work as a host and read away!

Yes, I misunderstood... my apologies.
I've wondered if it would be possible to solder in a wire from a +5v somewhere to the USB. (I'm sure someone will quickly point out if this is a "bad" idea...)

you would probably need to create 5v first. the touchpad I think runs off something like 3v. while I seems like a good idea to hack in a card reader,my feeling is not to.worry until you in out of memory. a better idea might be a device stuck to the back containing a extra battery and a card.reader. It would make the tablet thicker but increase battery life and provide plenty of storageas well as providing the power needed for the reader.

This would also be awesome. I think it would take a bit more for this though than an sdcard since the sdcard can operate up to 3.7v.

Well that's not near what the OP was talking about. An SD card that give you build in storage, even on the go, is much more practical than this option.
Still could be useful, but for me it not very practical.

I don't have a problem...
1. I didn't see where he asked about it... my apologies there.
2. Just pointing out the limited usefulness compared to the SD card solution.
I wasn't trying to be a jerk.
Personally I think the best solution would have been if HP would of just included an SD or MicroSD card. It drive me nuts when manufacturers mimic the apple model and give you less option and features as if that will equal success (looking at you Touchpad and GalaxyTab 10.1).
Um... Looks like the subject is just about buried in the amount of crap everyone has been piling on so far.
So back to constructive discussion... What are the advantages of having SD card in your mobile device (be it a phone or a tablet)?
I have a 16GB microSD card in my Nexus One, and I have never taken it out. I almost wish all of the flash was just integrated.
With quality of USB and network file transfer protocols I think SD is just about useless.

Very simple, I can put all my photos, videos, documents, downloads, Maps for my GPS apps on my SD card. It leaves more space on my device for apps and if and when I wipe my device I don't lose any of it. I've had time when I was having an issue with a device and had to wipe everything. Having certain files on my SDcard kept me from loosing anything. with my phone I've stored different ROM on my SDcard so I could test them out and switch between various ROM with ease.
I don't take my SDcard out either, the purpose of the SDcard isn't to move files from you computer to you phone but rather as storage.
But, I'll give you $10 for that useless 16GB microSD card.

Technically a TouchPad without hardware damage is unbrickable, USB is connected to CPU so you could always push a boot image to RAM.
You do bring up a valid issue, but some of the ways you can stop relying on local storage are cloud storage and cloud backups. These Palm accounts that we get with WebOS on the TouchPads do just that.
Which brings us to the next question, can we have an application to access our Palm accounts from Android?

But I like local storage. I rather have my music on my SD card. There are some picture I'd also like to have on my device locally. Same with documents and a variety of other thing. I don't have to have everything on there, but there are something I would like to have. Not to mention that being a WiFi device I can't always have access to cloud storage.
There is room for both in my opinion.
OK, I'm done... back to you regularly scheduled thread.
ive been curious about this since i got mine, but i have a 32gb, so its never really been a project in the front of my mind...imma take a look at the whitesheets and teardowns (cuz i dont wanna open mine if SD isnt possible ) and see if there are even pins for data available, but im pretty sure there isnt, which would also explain why devs are working on getting OTG running
I only have about 3.4gb of dropbox and i don't know enough people to pester to get 8gb.
What are most peoples thoughts on the asus web storage? 8gb for signing up seems great. If it sucks i don't want to waste any time transferring files.
it's not bad, works very similar to dropbox, and if you don't use the shared folder feature on db a lot, then it's going to work essentially the same for you.
mine says i have unlimited space, but i have no idea how that came about.

Actually, Asus prime owners have 8GB storage for an unlimited length of time. You can read it in the "Product Information" link on this page:

TRUE, but before one of the very early updates, you could get 1 year unlimited storage followed by 8GB free forever, obviously they rethought the logistics of this.
IME Dropbox is better able to handle off line cases, AWS has improved for a case like standing in an airport w/e free wifi. It also has a much more mature and natural Windows/Linux client then AWS.
If I was just using it as a digital locker, I'd use AWS for the really great price tag and offers avail when buying their newer models lol

Current use dropbox desktop app as i can just drag and drop and file instantly appears on my dropbox account. ASUS desktop app on the otherhand not as efficient. Files don't get upload instantly though currently ASUS cloud storage offers more space.
I have both as well. I only really use Dropbox though since I am used to it but it is nice to know I have 8GB sitting there waiting for me. I think the sharing in dropbox is slightly easier.
I only have 2.5GB in dropbox though. I think I have enough computers at work that I could make 27 or so dummy gmail accounts to get the 8GB but I haven't needed the space so I have never taken the time to try.. I am not sure if they would become suspicious by the sudden increase in my referrals. I don't know enough people who know or care about cloud storage to to get me there either.

50gb space on box.com if 8gb on asus web storage isnt enough for you
Is it just me or isn't dropbox working that good on the prime?
It won't let me upload documents in folders, (only the root dir) and i can't get to the dropbox file by using a file explorere, i gotta go into dropbox and press 'upload file' to get something there :/
(If the dropbox file is located in the file explorere, could someone enlighten me where and if root is required?)

i use AWS as the tablet app is nicely done but the uploading/downloading q is kind of weird.
I like Sugarsync for syncing offline folders on my prime. Drop box will do offline sync file-by-file but I am missing something if it will sync folders.
Skydrive is better than both.
i cant't log into asus webstorage on my PC because my ID is too long
it is really irritating because i want to use it.

Still a newby but I had this problem too, and came across a fix in the help files - think I had to download different version. Sorry cant be more specific, my head is spinning from trying to sort the other issues with my prime.
AWS does not work for me I've reinstalled, double checked everything but the files I place in the share folder do not show on my prime or the prime and on the PC...... I use drop box for now in till I can fig out AWS
I read bad things on their own forums about it deleting files. So I do not use it.
You can get so much dropbox space free these days or at low cost. I got 15gb cost me $10 using the adwords trick.
Using dropbox, got some free space because i have an HTC phone, the 5,5gb i have now are more than enough for what i need I dont need 2 systems doing one thing so i guess i'll stick for now.
Hello All,
My first post here - I just got my new Asus TF Prime today... Beautiful tablet
I just have a couple of q's - Is there anything I should do first up, after I open it and charge it?
I have to do the upgrade to android 4.0 and I saw the instructions in the Asus TF Prime support page. Is that the easiest / best way? I saw that there are 10 different firmware versions and they do mention instructions on how to get the correct firmware. But for some reason, I find it confusing. Can someone let me know how to chose the right firmware for upgrade? I am in Helsinki, Finland and I got the TF Prime from Helsinki, Finland.
Is it necessary for me to install a security suite on the tablet?
PS., I have seen the wonderful accessories guide here and I plan to get some soon like the stylus / cover...
Thanks and see you all around.. Cheers.
Step 1: avoid trolls/douchebags that flood this forum nowadays....
anyway once you are charged up go into the settings then about tablet and check for new firmware and upgrade to ICS. Then you need to decide if you want to root the tablet or not.
After you update to ICS, do a factory reset, for silky smooth operating...
Congrats

Congrats with your TF Prime!
You probably have the WW SKU, so I guess that is the one you should look at that one (Version V9.4.2.15(WW)
Check the SW version under "settings", but I guess yours will be World Wide Rom.
Enjoy your TF Prime, mine has been ordered today.

Verry important, and do it before you install anything, saves a lot of time.
Step 2: post thread comparing it to The new iPad
Hello people,
Thanks a lot and lol on some msgs...
I am charging it up now and I will check the SW version in a while.. but on the box, I see "Android WW"... so I assume its the android ww rom?
Also, on the keyboard dock sticker, it says "Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich" - Does this mean it has already shipped with the Android 4.0 OS? Anyway, I will check in the settings once I turn it on.
PS., how do I do the factory reset? From within the settings like in any other android 4.0 OS?
Thanks again and cheers.
PPS., I don't have no iPad and so, no comparison..
The good things:
Check out a few games, they rock on the Prime. There are a number of "THD" marked games that give the 3D performance a workout and show off the hardware and display very well. Emulators, especially with a bluetooth joystick paired to it, work great. Check out performance of video with some good movies. Check out Splashtop (comes with the tablet) and if you're inclined, check out Splashtop THD (basically Splashtop but makes higher resolutions available, and smooooooth streaming for HD files). Decide whether to root, add things like CIFS support for connecting to your home network. Put a new launcher on it, organize your shortcuts into folders, get a new wallpaper on it using wallpaper wizardrii, chat with some friends using Skype or Talk.
The preventative steps, to do while in your return period, and before you decide to unlock it...some of these issues may require RMA or a return/repurchase or selection of a different unit for some people:
-Verify it has a serial number shown in settings, and that you are able to receive OTA updates.
-Check out the overall performance of wifi, decide if it's good enough for your needs.
-Check the performance of the GPS. It likely doesn't perform very well.
-Try pairing a bluetooth headset and listening to streaming music or watching a movie over wireless, check out internet speeds with and without bluetooth.
-Check for light bleed along edges of the screen
-If you plan on using the keyboard dock, check out the various threads on cracked screens and decide if you want to take preventative steps or get an extended warranty, etc.

Agreed. Update your tablet before you install any apps and then do a factory reset. Some people noted software glitches after they upgrade their device and it is much easier to to a factory reset before you install a lot of apps.

To check for an update go to Settings > About Tablet > System Firmware Update.
Even though your tablet shipped with ICS, it might not have the latest update for this tablet.
To reset your tablet go to Settings > Backup & reset > Factory data reset.
Great ideas for new owners. Got plenty to do looking for problems before downloading any kind of applications.

Hi People,
Thanks again for the msgs and info.
I checked and it says Android 4.0.3 in settings (and yes, there is the serial number too).
I am yet to connect to wifi / bluetooth and all that. I will soon. Tablet as such looks great - no defects from the outside..
Btw, I noticed that there is no Swype option as an input method?! Is this true or am I missing something here? If there is no swype, then can I just download the Swype Beta from the official Swype website?
As for the apps., I still haven't installed anything yet.. I will in the coming days There are quiet a few essential apps I need to get in as well as get a micro sd card for 'expanded' memory.. lol (I need the micro sd card, because I'll be working with tons of PDFs and other documents).
Anyway, let me see how it goes Cheers..

Of course, yes Dropbox, evernote, Adobe reader (or is there anything better for reading PDFs?), Skype, Opera Mobile etc., are all waiting to get in..
Btw, thanks a lot for the SD Card info. Yes, I do have an SD card lying around - I will check that..
Also, in one of my prev posts., I had asked info about the necessity for a security suite - do I need one? I mean, I don't install apps from outside the google android market in any case... still, do I need a security suite?
And does anyone have any idea for Swype?
Thanks again.
You can download the Swype beta from their website. It works quite nicely on ICS now. There are a few steps required to get Swype up and running, including creating an account on their website, downloading an installer, then the installer downloads and installs the Swype app. But it's worth it, IMO.
I've never used a security suite for my Android devices. Just be judicious in which apps you install.
If you don't mind paying a few bucks for an advanced PDF reader/annotator, consider ezPDF or RepliGo.
Step 4. Determine wherever its faulty or not BEFORE your return to retailer window expires, and never, ever rma it, well obviously unless you are past return window and something fails.
Step 5. Hopefully its all clear, and you can start enjoying it.

The default Asus software keyboard is swype-like, in that you can slide from one letter to the next. Kind of swype-lite.
If you decide to root and unlock, Read this, very important:

Hello again,
Thanks for the msgs (and yes, I'm enjoying this tablet)
Btw, I checked the firmware version: On the TF Prime it says, "IML74K.WW_epad-9.4.2.15-20120221"
and on the Asus website, in the support section for TF Prime, I see "Version V9.4.2.15(WW)" - Is this the one I should be looking at?
Also, As you can see, the version is the same but the dates are different: The one on the Asus website has "2012.02.29 update" where as the system has "20120221"... So should I just leave it as it is or should I update to the new firmware?
I got Swype beta downloaded / installed and its working fine. BT and Wifi are working great as well...
PS., I noticed that, for some reason, when connected to my PC (at work, Win 7 x64, home premium) through USB, it doesn't charge (it charges when I connected to my laptop, Win 7 x86, Ultimate)... Why so?
PPS., Another issue (and yes, I did search and read some threads on a similar issue - notifications do not clear out even after downloading / installing an app!! Is there any way to clear it? For instance, on my SGS2 phone, there is this 'clear' option... but I don't see any such option with the TF Prime. Is there any way to clear those notifications?

I hate MTP with a passion. But it's been working "okay-ish" so far for me. It's just so slow.
I have a microsd to usb adapter (it was about $5 from amazon) and I just pop the card out of my phone and copy files. MTP was worst under HC. You could always transfer files via wifi or bluetooth. The only time I've had my note plugged into the PC is when I unlocked the bootloader.

Maybe you should read about usb mass storage and see how it differs from mtp. I can post some links for you but I can't understand it for you.
I forget what the rationale behind MTP was but I don't care. This is #@)*ING a pain in the @ss. It's Google's fault.
My Droid the way it handled USB and file transfer was waaay better.
I wouldn't really have a problem I guess but this Android File Transfer app on my Mac well it worked when I first got my SIII but right after the first stupid Verizon update it broke. Still broken in JB. Oh Verizon, the company you just plain hate.
For now I do what the above poster mentioned with SD card to my mac. It works, and thankfully Sammy gave us external SD Card slot. But it's not as convenient.
I wish Google would just add file transfering back or get Android File Transfer working again on Mac with the most popular phone (in the world?).

It was an attempt at a seamless auto mounting easy access to your phone's data requiring no input from the end user that failed. What really bugs me is that the method used for transferring is 100x slower than the usb mass storage method. The thing I do most is transfer music and MTP makes me want to poke my eyes out.
Hi guys,
first thanks for your help with my previous problem.
Unfortunately another problem came up.
My SD card deleted one folder with videos. It was
pretty strange because I was watching one of them
and then I just went to homescreen and when I turned
the screen on again this folder with videos which was
on my sd card just disappeared. And even when I
connected the tablet with pc it wasnt there.
And also some spotify songs which were on it just
deleted themselves. I dont know if it is problem with
the sd card or with my device or it just can happen.
The format of those videos was mp4 and I was using
the MX player.
Do you know what it might be?
Could it be a virus?
Probably not a virus. I'd suspect a bad quality SD card causing file table corruption since it sounds too random to be a controlled deletion. Was the deleted files perhaps the newest ones?
Try connecting the card to a PC and run a filesystem check.

Probably not a virus. I'd suspect a bad quality SD card causing file table corruption since it sounds too random to be a controlled deletion. Was the deleted files perhaps the newest ones?

I havent tried it yet but I will, thanks for the tip. And yes it suits your description
and also the files were deleted when I was not connected to the internet.
So it is probably a bad SD card even when it is a class 10 card...

Bad cards can come from anywhere, in most cases the bad ones are discarded in QA testing but in sometimes they pass the initial tests. You could also have some physical flaw on your card which would still make it pass the electrical tests. Compare it to another card and see if it's thinner (particularly SanDisk had huge issues with fake cards showing this specific issue) and use the manufacturers authenticity testing utility if they have one. The problem with fake cards is mainly how to reach the ones affected by them since they usually have no idea the card is fake until it's too late.
Just out of curiosity, what brand is it?

Its an SD card from a shop in Australia but I really cant remember its name. All I know is the shop
is pretty good and the price for the card was similar compared to for example SanDisc.
So technically it should be a good card.

No it really won't technically be a good quality card unless its one of the big OEMs and even then there are bad quality cards from them.
If its a no name card then it doesn't matter what they said the specs are, it is most likely a cheaply made card that is going to run into significant issues. The upside of Sandisc or PNY is they have a replacement guarantee as long as its a manufacturers defect, most no name or off brand cards don't have any kind of warranty
And not trying to burst your bubble but just because you paid a certain price doesn't mean that it will make the card better, I have learned my lesson the hard way with such things.
