[Q] Will AT&T Note be getting ICS OTA? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

Using ICS on my Cappy right now and it would be a shame to not have this for the note.
Is it scheduled or just rumored?

Scheduled. But no specific release date. People have been saying March / April.

The Note should definitely be getting ICS.

Okay cool thanks guys!

I believe Samsung said in Q1, and a rumor just surfaced that it would be March 1.

Murphy is a cousin of mine so i say AT&T will update to ICS 2-4 months after Int'l ppl get it from Samsung.
i <3 you Murph!!

That's the worst part of this. My Cappy has been amazing with ICS. I'm almost tempted to keep it until the Note get ICS also.
Too bad the hardware is different for the ATT note (from International version), we don't have LTE in Seattle, but I dislike the physical button on the IV.
Oh well, here's hoping ATT doesn't run the same route as the Captivate (Froyo forever sucked, then Gingerbread last week or so! It was great to have ports of gingerbread well before ATT)

OP, if ics came to the g-note a week after tomorrow it wouldn't be soon enough.
The captivate is freaking unbelievable running it. I to am enjoying it ...almost... enough to put off buying a new one. The cappy is a completely new phone...rom it on the g-note and it will -scream .... on ice cream. (sorry I couldn't help that last part)

The problem is that the hardware is holding it back.
And now that we'll have Notes, we can use ICS to it's full potential

Any new news?
Has anyone heard anything else about this. I check the ota update on my note regularly, but haven't seen anything yet

We may learn something at the Samsung event on March 15th... or maybe not.

You're better off searching online for stuff about release dates than keeping on checking the ota update on your phone. Google tells all. We will learn about a release date online well before it being available through your ota.

ICS on AT&T Note is unlikely in first half of 2012. End of 2012, maybe. 2013? More likely.

It probably will not be ota.... There will probably be bootloaders if the notes ever get ics.

With my history on updates for at&t devices....if it EVER comes, count yourself
lucky. AT&T, except for the iPhones, delays, delays, delays updates.
I've had two non branded phones, and always get updates MONTHS before at&t updates.

Source? If that's just a guess, please say so.

After dealing with samsungs BS with the Vibrant, I don't believe a single word, promise, hint, or hope that they announce until I see ICS on my device. I love Samsungs hardware, but I have lost faith in the company itself long ago when dealing with my vibrant and our 10% out of the box fail rate with Sync Master monitors.
On a plus side, my vibrant runs ICS beautifully so I'm sure it will be even better on the Note once a few good ROMS are released and the bugs are worked out.

It's called common sense if you ever dealed with Samsung devices on AT&T in the past. Anything else is just naive thinking, or fantacy.
For the record, AT&T (not Samsung) is the one determines when an update will be available. And AT&T almost never give out release dates. In rare cases it did so (Captivate and Infuse GB updates are said to be available in fall 2011), they screwed it (both release in 2012).
So, any posting about release schudle is pure guess.

+1. If it comes in OTA, wait a few days. OTA update with bootloader change almost always bricks a few phones everytime Samsung tries it. Most recent is the GS2 Skyrocket 2.3.6 OTA last month.

We have to go through the phases of an over due update. We havn't even seen the numerous "i know someone who can say with certainty that..." or "my brothers cousins sisters poodles hairdresser brother works on the dev teams and said..." or my personal favorite "i know someone inside the company who says". Then there is the phase of dispair where people say they will never buy sammy again and will be selling this POS and so on. Check out the captivate and vibrant forums and you'll see lots. In the vibrants case, it was Samsungs fault for dragging their feet, not T-Mo as they hadnt received the software to bloatware onto when waiting for Froyo! Sit and wait and watch current ROM scene if you really want ICS.

That's the common mis-conception. Carrier bloatware is baked into the ROM by Samsung per carrier request.
Here is how a firmware update process goes:
1. The carrier in question must feel the need for an firmware update. It's a big deal because it has to allocate resources for extensive testing, training of CSR and actual releasing.
2. The carrier makes a request for new firmware to Samsung.
3. Samsung builds the new firmware based on carrier's request and send to carrier for testing.
4. The carrier test extensively of the new build. If there are significant problems found, it goes back to step 3.
5. After extensive testing, carrier OKs the new firmware but need to pick a release date. Most importantly it has make sure it won't jeopardize the sales of new phones.
6. Once received OK from carrier, Samsung can put out the new firmware.
I'm not sure we are even past step 1 yet.

These kind of rumors have been going around for awhile. We'LLC see what happens.

Samsung and Verizon will not confirm we will receive 2.3. What I've read about Galaxy S getting upgraded in April involves Europe.

I think this (Gingerbread) will definitely happen for the other line of Galaxy S phones. They have been on 2.2 (officially) for some time now. ... sigh....
This is why I appreciate adranalyn/punkkaos so much. Who knows... punkkaos may release a good daily driver 2.3 rom for us!
Fascinate doesnt even have the official 2.2, doubt it will skip to 2.3. International galaxy s may get it, but fascinate will probably be one of the last to get it (as it is with 2.2).
Wasnt there another rumor before that fascinate will get it on the 30th of march? Unless verizon says so themselves, Im not going to believe this any time soon.

Unless Verizon ships it, I'm not even gonna believe them (I was told by some reps when I picked mine up that Froyo was coming in the coming weeks from what they were told... yeeeaaaahhhh....). I don't trust Verizon or Samsung...
Not at this point I care about their official Froyo, thanks to the Mesmerize. Hoepfully we'll get CM7 ported to our phones before our devs totally move on (instead of only continuing to work on this phone out of pity).
http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/07/gingerbread-update-for-samsung-galaxy-s-to-start-rolling-out-in/
Official word from Samsung's Finnish site informs us that local owners of its Galaxy S smartphone will be receiving their Gingerbread fix around the middle of this month. Less direct, but still pretty reliable, confirmation of this comes from UK carrier Three, who promises the same OS version will be arriving to its users of the handset "in a couple of weeks." Considering an Android 2.3.2 build for the Galaxy S already leaked out way back in February, few should be surprised at the timing of this release, but prior experience still urges us to be wary when it comes to Samsung and its software update schedules.

This phone will end up getting gingerbread, but its stupid to lust over it since it will be the last of the GS phones to get it. Enjoy your phones for what it has now and forget about gingerbread until verizon decides to release it.

who to blame?

Hi, probably stupid question, I think it is samsung but I am asking to be sure...
who to blame for the delay on updating our phones to the newest android os (sam or tmobile)?
it is a shame u buy a really expensive phone for it to some months later get totally forgotten by "original" brand developers...
Obviously T-Mobile. Samsung released two versions of GB for the international Galaxy now yet apparently T-Mobile is playing a money gamble here that would cost her some bad reputation and very pissed customers in the long run.
It's already happening.
oh I see, thats why I ask...
fu$% yeah, I am from Chile and here you can't really trust service providers... that is one of the reasons, besides price, I bought a US version of this phone. This is a little frustating and even there are cool developers I doubt in the short run I will be able to change my phone every 5 months to meet the alternative developers situations...
anyways, I think I will reconsider getting t mobile the next time...
None of the US Galaxy S variants received GB yet, tmobile was first to give us Froyo so its the best you'll get out of the pack
I didn't know that!... still think that doesn't make it better though....
less crappy option still crap i think...
anyways, I am not changing my vibrant anytime soon so hopefuly they are working on it

I'm not completely sure. The first 2.2 release on Kies felt like a beta to me. Samsung definitely hadn't provided a completely polished build up to that point. (End of January? Or was it February?) Is it really all T-Mobile's fault?
Also, if it was really being held by the carrier, why didn't Samsung at least throw us a bone and release the kernel source last Fall?

Samsung can't release anything not approved by the carriers. It had tried to push us an update and T-Mo had gotten pissy because they didn't want to use KiesMini. I rem that they yanked it so fast that most ppl didn't even notice Samsung had anything up in the first place.
When it gave us FroYo, I think that was a bit of an act of rebellion because with the #neveragain campaign picking up steam like it was doing, the late updates was blackening Samsung's already tarnished rep. It was a bit like an f-off to T-Mo USA because they've been trying to push an update since last yr if IIRC.

That's part of my point though. The update they did release seemed pretty half-baked, didn't it? That makes it seem like Samsung wasn't just waiting on T-Mobile after all, but instead were scrambling to update the phone in response to the negative PR.
I definitely agree that carriers are generally the problem...I'm just not 100% sure in this case. Definitely never buying a Samsung again unless there's a contractual obligation guaranteeing reasonably on-time updates.

If you are on this forum, chances are you are already running some type of GB on your phone and it is probably better than any "stock" release whether that is tomorrow or a month from now.
the GB roms run great (im on theory)....but come on man...its not going to be as stable as a final GB + Sense build...there are many proprietary files that are not complete with the test build...i cant see why the new official build wont increase are GB rom experience

Just wait for one of the devs to make a rooted version of the release and then flash the zip to your phone. Simple as pie.
you shouldnt update if you are rooted. wait for a rooted stock firmware.
I highly doubt it since there's been little or no talk at all about it. I was wondering since I just snatched one off of CL for super cheap. guess I'll go root instead.
I'd like to point out that it was all of 3 weeks ago they leaked something that looked like a reliable RUU called MR2 that was beyond question Froyo. Is it just me, or am I the ONLY one that took one look at that fake looking photo and said to myself "Dear God, the only thing that would look more fake would be a duck bill on a cactus." Can you imagine what the order for such a thing would sound like? "Hey, Johnny! We need and INTERNAL MEMO drawn up. Make sure to put our logo in the LEFT corner where NOBODY would ever put a logo on official stationary, be sure to add a picture of the device incase NOBODY has ever seen our first LTE phone, and definitely add specific OTA release numbers AND the radio version that will include so that our boys down in technical support will grow big rubbery ones as they dangle the information out there at hords of pimple-faced geeks calling with 'problems' but are really just hoping for the next big scoop for Androidforums.com" If Gingerbread come out in an official OTA today, I will eat my Thunderbolt and post the video on Youtube. Some news on the ICS update from HTC

I received a call yesterday from an HTC wanting to discuss a rather critical customer support feedback survey I recently submitted. In the course of the conversation he mentioned the ICS upgrade and I asked him when they expect that to happen. His answer:
"It'll be late May or the second half of this year."
I asked him to repeat it, and whether he had any evidence to confirm that. He said he was sure of the time frame. Make of it what you will, but I've suspected for a while we really got boned in the butt with this one. Give up on an official ICS release in any timely manner.
That's what I figured. When I was researching buying this phone and they said "Late Q1", I was skeptical and said it would probably be more like May. We got confirmation that they were blowing smoke when they announced the Rezound wouldn't be until "later this year".
The CS rep you spoke with seems to align with "later this year".
There has to be a way to get faster updates. What happened to the Google Android Update Alliance?
So basically what he said is sometime this year. That's a pretty big window, so basically we will see an official ICS build within the next 9 months. This is the very reason I root my phone. We already have very stable fully functional ICS builds thanks to our Devs. I don't understand how our Devs can get a great build for us, but yet the "professionals" can't seem to make it happen.

Because they aren't concerned with us getting updates. They just work on the next phone and get around to us if they feel like it.

I'm betting it has something to do with Verizon ,not htc. Id blame Verizon for slowing down any update or rom upgrade. Simply because Verizon is testing it to find all the software bugs and tricks embedded in the ROM. And they are determining what bloatware and/or cripplrware they want to stuff in it before its release. Thats why the date keeps getting pushed ahead. Srnd it back to htc devs after vzw is done. Htc tweaks it more, vzw wants to do more to it...and back to htc yet again... :/
The alliance is a joke.
More marketing bs. Great phone though

Even sadder ICS news
http://phandroid.com/2012/03/06/htc-sensation-line-to-get-android-4-0-but-only-sense-3-6/
I think if this is the case with the Rezound rooting will be a must.
Thank goodness for the leaks. They have certainly gotten to the point of being solid and give me most of what I want out of the update. But it doesn't change the fact that Android/Sense 4.0 is ready and working on other phones and they clearly don't have much respect for their previous promises or customers.
I'm sure VZW gets partial blame here, but they are all hurting their reputations together. The extra wait better result in us getting Sense 4! If we just get a bloated official 3.6 I say we get the pitchforks!
Funny, gingerbread with sense 3.5 looks and acts basically like ics with sense 3.6. I tried Joel's sense 4.0 rom and it was pretty cool. This is why we root folks. Never trust the carrier or manufacturers. Stick with the developers!
I'm sure VZW puts HTC through hell with the roms for VZW phones. Definately sucks, but IMO, the longer its put off the more likely we are to get sense 4.0

welcome to retail. HTC/Verizon already has your money. They sold you a phone with whatever software is had on it at the time. They aren't obgliated to update it at all. they do so in order to keep customers happy. its not just HTC either, motorola, samsung, LG, company x; all the same with software updates. Their policy is update the newest first then work their way back. it cost money to develop updates for every single phone model, thats just the way it is. I have learned to not worr or wait for official updates and just use what this great development community has provided to us....4 months early.
the ICS ROMS out right now are honestly magical. Try them out.
I predict that we won't see anything until the "one" is out for at least a month and the buying of that device begins slowing.

I've been following these threads but refraining from posting in them .
I understand your point, however, Android 4.0 was released/announced just prior to the release of the Rezound. If potential customers of the Rezound knew they would not be updated for close to another year (likely when Android 5.0 will be out) I'm sure that would've swayed many buyers.
I myself as well as most of us users on here aren't too hurt about this thanks to our awesome Devs but it sucks to know a lot of people dropped some nice coin for phone that HTC/Verizon have obviously not held their end of the deal of "Will receive ICS in early 2012". I don't really agree & I'm not trying to argue at all.
My point is that the average VZ customer could care less about updates to a phone that basically worked just fine out of the box.
I am the head of our corporate cell phone account with almost 200 phones & if you said "ICS update" to any of our users you would be met with a blank stare as they wouldn't have the first clue what you where talking about. As long as they can turn on their phones & it functions as it's supposed to, they are perfectly happy with it.

you are def right and i agree. it sucks that consumers are fed lies to sell products. honestly though you have to think of it as a numbers game for VZW.
How many people bought the rezound? 1 million (for ease of math)
How many of those people actually care what OS their phone has? maybe 10%?
of that 100000, how many really know the advantages of ICS vs GB? maybe another 10%?
i mean its a small piece of the VZW pie when you think about it.
plus when the next big HTC phone hits the shelves for sale VZW can advertise is as the "first 4.0 HTC device"
it will be summer before we see this. all i want ice cream for is so the devs can finally get us aosp.

That is exactly the point I was making.
It is only posters to sites like this who really care about things like ICS updates & we are such a tiny fraction of Verizons 100 million customers. If every single XDA poster switched to Sprint tomorrow, VZ wouldn't even notice the hit........
This isn't anything new. The HTC Droid Eris was stuck on Android 1.5 forever. I'm pretty sure Android 2.2 Froyo was out already by the time the Droid Eris got its official Android 2.1 update. Based on the past, I wouldn't be surprised if we see the official release of Jelly Bean sometime before we get the official ICS update for the Rezound. I was also fully prepared for the possibility that we'd have an AOSP port working before we get the official ICS update from Verizon. The Droid Eris already has a mostly working AOSP ICS port and they haven't had an official update since Android 2.1 to base anything off of, so I know its possible with the right amount of time and patience.
Anyways, going forward its very possible we are only going to have AOSP ports for the Rezound, because it is entirely possible at this point that ICS will be the last officially supported version of Android for this phone.

Do you really believe they would have released an update while the Rezound has been on sale from last week through today. The release of ICS would not have been done until the sale is over. Otherwise you would have had units being sent out without ICS from the early part of the sale and then sent some out at the end of the sale with ICS. It would have complicated everything, now the sale is over they can address thier attention to releasing ICS. Well at least I hope.
I don't think that Verizon promised this update on 4/6/2012. Wasn't this a Best Buy bogus post for both the Razr getting ICS on 4/4 and the Rezpund 4/6, neither of whaich was true. I have not read anywhere that Verizon published this release date for ICS for the Rezound.
It wasn't confirmed by anybody but a BB poster which had no evidence behind it anyway.

all speculation and rumors at this point. im telling you guys, i don't expect it until at least summer.
I honestly don't care anymore. I have fully working ICS on my Rezound. If they never officially released it, I wouldn't care much since I already have it. What would be nice however, is if they dropped the source code on us for the leaks that are already floating around.
I still don't understand the outrage that some people have over it. I mean, the people that care about it are here or on other sites that have info about rooting and development - so if you want ICS - go get it. The rest of the people - they probably don't care because they just want their device to work, and it does out of the box untouched. It works pretty darn well too.

i feel you, they lost alot of customers on this one. its not that hard to push out a update that is already done.

Not that I care....much, but are purchased Rezounds being shipped with ICS? I had to take advantage of the sale.

I even picked one up on this sale and I still do not have 4G out her on Long Island. Hardware it is fine, Dev support is better than the prior units I am switching from, so It can only be better on our end.
everyone i've spoken with says that they barely sell any rezounds anyway. that's this area, so ymmv.

Shame it's a good phone... I was going to pick up a Nexus til I started seeing the issues they were having. Couldn't be happier with my choice to get a Rezound instead.
this is so far my fav phone period but i honestly doubt vzw will ever bother pushing ics onto this thing. if they do though, it'll be in the distant future when ics becomes standard on most devices.
Why care about a bloated up release from VZW that has an older version of Sense? When there are several awesome Sense 4.0 roms that run smooth as butter available for us to flash. Get with the times brotha.
