hi everyone new to the group.i have a droid razr ver.2.3.6 and system ver.6.12.173.xt912 en ,us.i would like to root my phone to the ICS can anyone help me with this.thanks
Answer
Ok, first things first.
1- ICS isn't released yet. Looks like May/June, maybe sooner. There is a pre-alpha ROM out there, it isn't fully functional and there are a lot of bugs and glitches. I have it on my safe system to test it out.
2- Rooting your phone isn't just clicking a button. In a sense it is, but you need to be very aware of the legality of rooting. It WILL void your warranty. It MAY brick your phone. I suggest you look around the forum for questions regarding rooting. There are plenty of resources to help you out, make sure you do all your homework on rooting, what it does and what the pros and cons are.
At the end of the day, once you're rooted and you start flashing ROMs, there's always the possibility that you will have a 700 dollar paperweight. Not to discourage you, but it's a real possibility.
thanks for the reply

I have a T-Mobile G2 and although I've read earlier today that they are 'working' on getting the update ready. I'd rather just have the normal version of Sense that everyone else has
I've tried reading through lots of topics here but I'm a bit confused what I need to do. Do I need to root my phone ? Unlock it ?
As you can probably tell I'm new to Android so I don't really know much about it
Any help would be appreciated, Thanks
Yes, T-Mobile had to be dragged kinking and screaming into making an announcement. Now that they have I shall wait.
It seems the only benefit of getting the T-Mobile Upgrade is that you get to keep your warranty apart from that it's just the same but with a few T-Mobile logo's chucked in...
..and not having to go through the risks of 'hacking' your phone aswell

well even if you get it unlocked from what iam reading it make not a S**** of difference you still cannot use updates from HTC. I have rooted my tmob with custom rom seems to work ok alot faster then tmobs stock rom but i am sure there official update will be here very very soon
And pigs might grow wings and start aerial assaults...
I have no faith in T-Mobile's ability to provide a timely ROM upgrade, maybe by Xmas. I would love them to prove me wrong of course.
Go to Modaco and follow the instructions carefully to install their custom rom, if any steps in the procedure give you cause to be concerned, DONT do it.
And always make backups of your data.
And make sure you backup your data.
Yes, I know I repeated myself, but trust me, its a major point if you are going to mess around with roms.
Hi. I just ordered the HTC Hero but I'm not sure what version OS it will ship with.
Whats the official latest? Will I have to root and all that stuff to install it?
What are Radio's? What do they do? Why would I need to install/update one?
Are there any risks or downsides to rooting the device?
If I do the official update, will I lose the ability to install custom ROMs? If I root it to install custom ROMs, will I lose the ability to install official updates?
Thats all for now... I might ask more questions.
Thanks in advance.
Well done! You do have some tastes!
Just forget about all your questions. Get used to Hero first.
Visit forum pages for knowledge and info for a month from today.
After that you will be answering and helping others.

Fair enough, thanks
But I know people just say "dont mess up". I'm just curious as to what the worst case scenario is if you DO mess up.

Worst case scenario?
What happened to *this* guy: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=585269
But you'd really have to be not careful when you do things...
Main things to remember when you're looking at things: if it doesn't say CDMA, it's likely for the GSM version of the phone and won't work.
If all else fails: ask here about specifics...and if it still breaks things, there's always the RUUs for your provider (assuming it's on the list: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=559622)
Hm cool, thanks!
I'll most likely only install the latest *official* RUU when I get my phone. Modding I guess will have to wait a bit, but its good to know that effing up is ... hard
Use and enjoy your Hero and determine what do you want from it ie usb tethering, skype on 3, sip application for which no roots needed. At present wifi tethering does need root. So not everyone will want to go root way.
If you still go root way , I suggest to read about it. Reading is harder! And its a 10 minute job once fully understood.
If so, reply here, tell me what you all think is needed or wanted, and I'll see what I can do. I know I'm feeling full of stupid questions, and the best way I learn is to find the answers for others.
There are several in development.

i really would appreciate a some sort of guide and some basic info. Since HTC allows unlock the boot, i am not sure about hwo that plays with the warranty and if there's any recovery. I would really appreciate if someone can have a good guide explaining some basic stuff like the process of getting the phoen to run custome rom (yes I know there are few but it would just be nice to have 1 with a bit detail and also mentioning a few of things we should watchout like warranty, etc).
also I really would appreciate a baisc maybe dumb step by step process with maybe a quick guideline for a newbie like me to follow where it's almost 100% fail proof to kind of test so one can get used to the whole idea of flashing custom rom
Con beat me again but there are plenty of stickies or threads people can read... the reason that there are so many questions is because people are either too lazy to read or dont look at the guides... so i think even if u made one people would still not read it
I'd love a noob guide! I have looked at some of the foolproof tools and they seem decent enough for me to get started with...
I'm a lifelong developer, but I am new to android, so it's just a matter of time before I dive in.. and once I'm in, i'll be thrashing around and hope to help out the dev's we got.
That being said... I'm literally one rainy weekend away from unlocking and getting started on all this (but that weekend is hard to find here in SoCal.. )

If you are a developer I don't know why your not diving in ... It's soo easy to do all the unlocking and stuff... I bet it takes less than an hour and that's just bc u have to wait on things to flash .... But what do I know I'm just an average Joe.
Sent from my Dinc... I mean Rezound
hahaha, tomorrow (wed) is suppose to rain, maybe it's a good day to get your hand wet
that would be great....i'm coming from a DX and OG Droid where i rommed and modded away. but the rezound has e scared to unlock/root. i ahven't touched anything yet and i really want to. i liked that i had the option to sbf back to stock if worse came to worse. i can flash anything i wanted to but could always go back to completely unrooted stock if need be.
I'm sorry if this has been answered before but I'm using tapatalk and can't figure out how to search the forums...
Anyway, after reading this forum, I'm pretty hesitant to do anything major to my phone...I'm pretty content to just wait for the ICS OTA, however when I do get the OTA I would like to at least install Nova launcher and I'm pretty sure you need to be rooted for it to work...
So my first question is, if I do root, do I have to unlock the bootloader? And in doing so does that prevent me from receiving future OTAs?
My second question is about leedroid tweaks...I'm not a huge fan of my pink soft keys and I've read that leedroid tweaks let's you dim or turn them off completely...if I'm wanting to use that would I be romming my phone?
Sorry for sounding like such an idiot...I had a droid x and it was wayyy different from this phone as far as modding goes and from what I've gathered I can't just SBF my Rezound if I get into some trouble like I could on my X...I also had a lot of hardware issues with my X that lead to me going through a whopping 9 replacement phones, so my trust in electronics is minimal and the last thing I want to do is get stuck with a voided warranty.
Thanks for the help in advance and sorry again...I know from the video I watched to sign up that you guys get pretty annoyed with people like me but these forums seem like the most legitimate place for answers.
Hey guys, I was one of the ones who was refraining from rooting my prime because of the defects I wanted to keep it stock in case of RMA. However, after dealing w/ Asus I decided the repair center are not competent enough to repair my software issues.
I am on .21 so I tried searching for any methods to obtain root if I unlocked my boot loader. The only method I came across required rolling the firmware back to .15 & even though I've rooted, unlocked, flashed & modded a dozen or so devices, it was a process that appeared to carry some heavy risks, and required quite a bit of work & knowledge I might add.
I decided to unlock the boot loader, and attempt to install CWM via command prompts, in hopes of flashing a rooted rom. This was a much easier & much shorter process and it also consists of much simpler methods. After I was all setup, I did some searches on anyone else who may have taken the same approach & after quite a bit of thread surfing I found a couple very short discussions in the Q&A forums, that were pretty vague.
I've never written a thread or guide in the Dev section, but if someone more experienced did, and the mods would stickie it, then it would probably help some of the lesser experienced users. It would also prevent a few bricks I'm sure, that then lead to a panicked noob posting HELP threads in the Dev section.
Just a thought on something that could be beneficial to some ppl. Oh, and after I installed Virtuous, I have completely resolved the random reboots & freezes that were happening 4-6 times a day. I just can't believe the terrible software Asus has given us for such a beautiful piece of hardware....
There is a lot more risk unlocking and flashing a custom rom than downgrading and rooting. Not to mention downgrading will preserve all settings and apps,as wee as keep you on Ota updates that won't brick your device. Oh and the biggest reason not to do what you did is unlocking voids warranty whereas rooting does not. So if you just need root I highly suggest you don't do what the op did.
Let me say this. I knew NOTHING and still know NOTHING about ADB. ADB is what you use to downgrade your firmware. How did I learn to use ADB when I knew nothing about it? There is a thread here on the forums for ADB SDK usage.
The only thing you have to do to downgrade your firmware is being able to perfectly replicate less than a SENTENCE of code ALREADY written out for you in the PROPER order. If you can't do that, you probably can't even follow the directions of installing batteries in a small childs toy.
I successfully downgraded my Transformer Prime from .21 to .15 after just 5 minutes of reading and REREADING the directions. Just make sure you understand what happens during each step and that you know what step comes after it. Make sure you do NOT skip a step.
I have never once bricked a device... NEVER! Also, rooting alone will not fix Asus' terrible software! Unlocking the boot loader is not a great risk, its a one click method done with an Asus distributed tool! Lol... Unlocking does void an already worthless warranty, since there are so many documented cases of Primes coming back from the tech centers w/ prominent physical damage, still present issues, & owners losing their device for up to 3 months! All of these circumstances are actual reported incidents I've read right here on the xda threads! So... before anyone jumps in, always ready & willing to condescend as ALOT of ppl here on Xda do, please consider your options if your one of the many dealing w/ being SCREWED by Asus! This is a viable method to make the best of a piece of hardware you've spent what you may consider a lot of money on!
If your interested in getting a custom Rom & you don't know how on the .21 update, then pm me. I will no longer publicly post any comments on xda. As even developers are leaving this community due to the nature of its members. There are quite a lot of rude, condescending youngsters here.
I'm a polite, well educated, respectful, and self made member of society, who is conscious of how to address others on or offline. Somehow, every time I've made a post, community suggestion, or even a comment to thank or encourage others, I seem to get the two cents of the "I know better than you" crowd. Funny..... that doesn't happen on the other development sites?
