How to make ADW Launcher EX persistent in memory? - Motorola Droid X2

Hi, I am using ADW Launcher EX. Previously this launcher had an option to make it persistent in memory under system preferences. However, in the latest version, that option is missing. Whenever I clear my RAM to free up space and speed up the phone, the launcher is closed and it restarts, which takes some time. I pushed the app to the system, but it still is not persistent. What can I do here?

litetaker,
Which ROM are you currently using? CM7 has an option under Performance to Lock Home in Memory ...
In any case, you can use a text editor to insert this line into either your build.prop or one of your init.d scripts ...
ro.HOME_APP_ADJ=0
This should insulate your launcher, regardless of the ROM you running.

Thanks for the info. I am in fact using CM7, so I used the setting in Cyanogenmod settings.

Oops, didn't read your post completely. I still have an older version of ADW because I dislike a lot of what he did in the recent overhaul.

find adw ex in the data/app folder and move it to the system/app folder. that makes it a system app then cm7 should keep it persistent.
dont forget to change permissions to rw-r--r--. also cm7 keeps plenty of ram free with the asset purging option. task managers just slow u down in the long run.

Go Launcher EX

GO Launcher EX is the extra version of GO Launcher, one of the most popular stock home replacement app in android market, provides beautiful themes, fast flip speed and tons of useful functions. Don't know how many of you use it. Its very fast has an inbuilt task killer also!!
Check out the website!!
http://www.goforandroid.com/
I've been using GO Launcher for a while now, it's by far the best out there. Only strange thing i noticed is that with GO Launcher EX you need to install a separate module in order to have missed call and message notifications down in the dock.

No but u can put them into folders.
Awsme launcher thanx
I've tried other launchers and this is the only one moving smoothly on my Optimus. In addition to that it has icon personalization and you can make those annoying never-used apps disappear in your app menu.
it has enough customization options and the battery use is quite low. A must-have!
very good ...... n.n
Go Launcher EX in my opinion has to be the best one out there.
I am one of the people who actually enjoyed Touchwiz at first....well, until my app drawer reached over 10 pages (That's 160 apps and I even had the bloatware hidden with TiBackup)
Anyways. I have just this completely crazy and awesome thing going with Go Launcher on my phone. The best thing is, I've gone from 10 pages all the way down to 4. This launcher has so much customization and features, and on top of it all, it runs extremely fast.
I have posted several screens of what I have done on my phone using Go Launcher as well as just some screens so people can see it and understand it more.
The 1st is a preview of the ui swiping side to side, the 2nd is all my home screens, the 3rd is what the new app drawer looks like (notice the folders INSIDE the app drawer), the 4th is just all the options I have on my main home screen. The 5th and 6th Images are showing how you can switch the dock back and forth. The 7th is showing the modded facebook app available here on the XDA and my personal mod of the Picture Dial widget. And the last is the Screen Shortcut Screen (when you pinch the screen at home).
I hope you all enjoy.
NOTE: The "theme" I have is purely from the customization features I had available. I did not mod it at all (with the exception of one widget) nor did I actually create a theme for the Launcher like those which are available for ADW.
You can find almost all of what you see via internet. I had to photoshop a few icons (you'll notice them on the screen shots showing my different dockbars as those images are more recent).
gunna have to give this one a try adw launcher just isnt cuttin it for me any more
Using 2.3.2 Mur4ik ROM what I find is that Home Manager shows both Go Launcher EX and stock launcher are running at the same time, stock can take up to 40mb RAM, and second that for Go Launcher EX, so I've changed to stock because I want more mem and when I AutoKill stock then Go launcher Running tab says there's more ram.
How can I customize stock 2.3 launcher?
I need to change number of screens to 3 from 5, I don't need more.
Is there any way to create folders in menu instead in "desktop" only?
Screen transistions are not my priority, but Go Launcher is much user friendly anyway, and allows quick access to most commonly used options by me.
Yeah just hold one app and drag ontop of another to put them both in a folder

How much memory did you say Go Launcher used up? when I'm in it's app drawer tab and kill everything I can only get a max of about 150 out of a possible 303Mb
I will say that you can clear up some memory if you "Freeze" your default launcher using Titanium Backup.
Oh and one of the coolest things about Go Launcher is that since I made a Titanium Backup of it before changing Roms, when I got my phone back up and running again, all I had to do was go into Go Launcher's Preferences, scroll down and hit restore configuration (I had made a back up, can't forget that) and all my custom icons were restored. I had to add my widgets back manually, but that wasnt too big of a deal (I didn't make a titanium backup of that, but I think you can).
...hold on, actually Titanium Backup just restored all my apps, the Go Launcher's configuration is completely separate from titanium backup. GO Launcher creates it's own folder on your SD card for it's backups. It's pretty cool.
Soooo..... has anyone happened to have talked to the developer or anything to find out about making custom themes? I haven't had any experience making themes for other launchers, but I'd like to give a shot at making one for Go Launcher and I haven't seen anything on how to make one unfortunately.
nice but crashes too frequently
for my it is the best launcher for now, and in the oficial page says that it going to have customs themes
Is there any way to decrease the number of screens? I find it incredibly irritating to see have 5 screens, I only need and use 2.
I found GO Launcher to work best with stock 2.1. There are buch of themes for it, but only several of them are good for me.

How to remove launcher?

My phone cones default with above launcher. I just changed to go launcher ex and wanted to remove tw . My phone is roots. Can someone guide me on the removal? I tried holding onto the icon but the "x" does not appear. Thanks
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
you can download root uninstaller from market and find the twlauncher, and remove it
i wouldnt do it tho, in case your go launcher fails you will lack a launcher to do stuff
you can also delete the tw launcher using root explorer.just navigate to system/app
But as you have been warned delete TW launcher and not replace it phone cannot load .
jje
As JJE has pointed out, removing TW is fraught with danger.
If you really don't like it the best thing to do is install a launcher you do like then freeze the stock launcher in Ti or similar. This way your launcher of choice will be the default. Also bear in mind you can't completely get rid of TW, it is very much baked into your rom and its services are always running in the background/the launcher you use runs on top of it.
I also use GoEx & have the default Miui launcher frozen in Ti. I don't recommend removing anything to do with the stock launcher.
Go launcher allows you to make it your default launcher when setting it up so there's no need to mess with removing tw.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
Or flash a rom that doesn;t use TW - like Illusion - go launcher as standard
I have about three launchers in the system / apps folder and use home switcher to change but only really use TW .

I have already made go launcher ex as default. But once a while when I kick on the centre button, the same prompter will appear asking me to choose btw go launcher and tw launcher. Everyttime I tick the box and make go.launcher the default, the prompter will appear again.
That's why I am thinking of removing it altogether. Or perhaps Bro/sis know how to solve the jnial problem?
Have you changed default through go launcher settings as well? because I'm using it and never have that problem. Maybe try clearing defaults in application management for go launcher too.

OK. Because I'm an all round good guy, I'll repeat this for the 2nd time.
Get Titanium Pro from the Market (or Gemini if you don't want to pay, or several other apps that can freeze apps), and freeze the stock launcher. I have done this in Miui and am using GoEx as my default launcher without having to tick any boxes or without the stock launcher prompting me or appearing out of nowhere.

[Q] How to change default folder icons?

Is there a way to change the default folder icons? I DON'T want to use an app because I like how the default one works. It's fast and simple.
I'm using Launcher Pro (free) on a rooted g2x (Eaglesblood cm7 rom).
You can on ADW, at least ADW Ex anyway. I'm not sure if the free ADW allows for this, but you can try it out.
If you're looking for customization, I'd suggest ADW over LauncherPro. If you want to stick with LauncherPro, I don't think there's a way to do it.
Any solutions?
I'm also interested in this topic, and I agree with you, fast and simple, it does what it should
Moreover having a rooted phone I suppose that there is way to make a flashable zip or some other tweak to have this done
thanks guy!testing
I'm using Folder Organizer, but would love to ditch the overhead. Also, adding items is a bit convoluted; not nearly as easy as the drag & drop of the default folders. There must be an image file buried in there somewhere, that's accessible on a rooted phone. I just have no idea where!

[Q] Custom launchers can't stay in memory

I don't know if this is normal to Ace nowadays but I just have this problem recently
When I use some custom launchers (Xperia, GO Launcher, ADW, etc.) and opened up some system apps (phone, contacts, and the likes) then try using the Stock task manager.. those launchers are being killed.. leaving the system app / stock launcher intact after I press the back button.
It's just pretty annoying that I still need to press the Home button just to show/revert back to those launchers...
Is this is really a problem and are there any fixes for it?
thanks

Even this seems to kill the launchers.
You may need to select "Keep in memory" or similar in your launcher options.
If you are rooted and have a root file explorer you can make a backup of the system launcher by copying the apk (and dex file if included) to your SD card, then move the app from your preferred launcher to system/app with Rw,R, R permissions and delete the stock launcher from the system/app folder. Then reboot.
Also many launchers have the system persistent option, try enabling it.

Is because the stock task manager is made by Samsung, it doesn't like third party apps.
you could use a different task manager from play store.
I don't use task manager's, android will kill processes when it needs to.
Sent from my GT-S5830 using my hands
Well mate anyway you try, 3rd party launchers will always be killed by task manager. You can't keep them fully in memory. However if you don't like TW launcher, just delete apk and dex from system/app using root explorer and install any other launcher before doing so. It'll never appear again
hmm should I rename the new launcher to the deleted apk?
like GoLauncherAPK.apk to TouchWiz30Launcher.apk?
or just directly move it to the app folder

Bro i already told you that third party launchers will be killed by task manager. Moving them to system, renaming them, nothing would help. They can't be locked in memory unless any developer tries to do so.

Simple ICS lag fixes

I have tried this on both my Razr ICS and my gf's Galaxy Note ICS and it works.
On both phones, they are pretty fast until you start to install stuff.
After applying these, the phone is much smoother even with around 200 user apps.
1) Use Autokiller memory optimisation, root needed.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rs.autokiller&hl=en
This is a common method which android veterans already know, which is to change android's internal autokill values. This is not the same as task killers!
On both phones, I use "aggressive" preset.
For other tweaks like V8 supercharger, it's recommended values are closed to autokiller's "Extreme".
I added more tweaks to the post.
2) Turn on Force GPU rendering under developers mode. Most games and apps seem to work fine with it on.
3) Turn on background process limit to 4: I thought this is interesting (from JerseyFF) so I tried it out, seem good for daily use.
(update: after a while setting for this will revert to standard, there's no way to fix this yet)
4) Use Nova launcher. (root required for Motorola widgets)
The default launcher is smooth but it likes to reload every now and then (even with default autokill values). Tried Apex launcher but it's not as smooth as default launcher. Nova launcher is close to the default launcher which allow more tweaks and and yet it is buttery smooth. Do not update to beta though. I tried it and it's a lagfest.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.teslacoilsw.launcher&hl=en
VM heap size app no longer works after ICS update. If anyone knows how to fix that, please share.
Feel free to add any more tweaks or tips to make RAZR ICS better.
Is this at all somehow related to the Background Process Limit that is able to be set under Developer Options with ICS now?
It has a Standard Limit setting, No background processes, and At most 1 (through 4) processes for options.
Does anyone know what the value for Standard is?
In background process limit, it limits a number of background apps running, while the autokill values limit the number of bg apps running based on the amount of memory left, and killing off lower priority processes first.
The default values for background process limit is therefore "varies".

Wow the auto killer is quite the find! Sped up my phone allot. Still running quite hot though
Thanks!
Thanks for the info, I'll confirm that upon bootup after applying the Aggressive setting, I tried scrolling around the Motoblur homescreen and thought it was smoother. But then the Superuser allowance for Autokiller kicked in right in the middle of me scrolling around and I noticed quite a difference in scrolling speed, it just suddenly got faster and smoother and the framerate looked as if it had increased by about 5 FPS. I also did tweaks #2 and 3 as well, but I think Autokiller makes the biggest difference. A good find for sure!

Use setcpu and create profiles to set cpu speed lower when screen off and when battery is overheating. There's a free, older ver on xda.
Also you can use juicedefender to make your 3g connection turn off when screen is off. This should also help keep your phone temp down when you're not using it. Note that it will turn itself on every few min to receive whatsapp, mms and emails etc. (not for whatsapp hoes)
Hi, thanks for your tips. I don't know what lag experience you experiment but I hope this works for my RAZR lags. What is happen to my RAZR is that when I enter to apps drawer, non of the icosns appear and instead the "loading circle" takes place until the apps appears. Also when I exit any app and go to home, none of the icons of widget appears, they take half second to reapper.

That's called redraw. Try using apex and there is an option for keeping the launcher in memory so it loads faster

When I first installed Nova launcher, it asks for root access when going into widgets.
Try going to Nova settings ->Drawer-> Check Widgets in drawer (requires root permissions for system app)
Moto widgets like fav. contacts doesn't work well because I can't "pull down"... but it's there, including Motocast widget.
You may want to manually grant Nova launcher root access.

This is why I'm using Nova launcher instead. There's a free version, do try it. It may still take a while to load the app drawer icons after playing a game, but the 'redraw' for Nova's desktop pages are pretty fast. I also liked how it switched to a tablet version when I'm using Webtop mode.
Do try Apex as well. I didn't like it as it felt laggy when I'm scrolling my desktop pages few months back. It may have improved now and many users are complimenting it. As for myself, I have already bought Nova Prime and I'm sticking to it.
