360° screen rotation - Sony Tablet S

Is it possible to make auto rotate mode to work for all 4 orientations with root. I know orientation switch app allows reverse landscape but you need to switch it on and off as it does not kick in by itself. Hope someone clever find the mod to lift the 3 axes limit. Many thanks in advance

I use the switch function. I actually like having auto rotate off as having it switch around on me while using is annoying.

Just wondering, why 4 way rotation? It already rotates the 3 best/most useful ways.

I think heavy part should be at the bottom when holding it without the case. More flexibility is better

Im not 100% sure, but I think that this is a patent of Apple, android can only use 3 axis rotation

Or sony patented upside-down view if you hold the tablet heavier side down...

I agree, heavier side down is much more ergonomic.
They got the portrait view so right, how did they mess up landscape so much.

Heavier side down is much more ergonomic not for me

I have to disagree, sometimes heavy side down is the way to go, particularly when reading an ebook.
Maybe we'll get it in the ICS release. There are some other goodies coming.

Anybody with ICS know if they allow 360 rotation or not?

I don't know about y'all but if I held the tablet upside down I would find it awkward fumbling to flip it over to use the ir feature.

Perhaps, but I use the Tablet for other things as well. Browsing, reading books and viewing apps would be easier in many situations if we could rotate 360 degrees.

You do not need root there is just a app but you'll have to buy "Orientation Control" €1.14 thats a full rotation app from the Google Play market.
Also there is "Ultimate Rotation Control" a 7 days trial,
you have to buy the licence after that which costs €1.99 but you can give it a try.

My cell phone does all four.
As to preference, upside down is a nice option.

Agreed ! Trying to watch a movie in landscape feels uncomfortable afterva while because of the sharp edge.

Thanks for the tip Mahaco, I might try that one out.
And yes, there are a number of reasons why I would want all four axes, so it might be handy.

Ics can 360's rotate.

possible in ics. .on my galaxy note

That's not a lot of help to the Sony Tablet S users on the Tablet S forum....

Profile orientation only apps going the wrong way!

Even with the 3 orientation option, some apps lock into portrait only mode... going the wrong way on a Tablet S for right handed users- thicker side to the right. Hate that.

Dock Trackpad Uses

What exactly are the uses of the trackpad on the dock?
Curious

I've had the trackpad disabled since day 1. Don't know why people would want to use it. If you want to use the trackpad, why not just get a netbook or laptop? Why buy a tablet if you're afraid to use the touchscreen?

I agree. Aside from the fact I don't like using trackpads, the screen is right there. Why would I go to a trackpad when I can just point at what I want ?
When I don't use a bluetooth mouse, I actually use the trackpad... I've found that if you are using the keyboard, it's easier to use the trackpad than reach up the screen every time. It sounds like reaching for the screen isn't a big deal, but I just found it easier to use the trackpad. I just wish Asus would disable the trackpad while typing!

So the trackpad gives you a cursor?
I can see where this would be both useful and unnecessary.

Absolutely - the trackpad works just like a trackpad on a laptop - it even allows you to "tap" to click and has a physical left and right mouse buttons beneth it. I actually find it useful when I don't have a mouse - especially when doing RDP sessions as it gives you finer control....
The trackpad is very useful. See: websites like xda that have ****ty advertisements that popup and cover the screen and require you to hit a very tiny x to close it. Impossible on touchscreen, easy with trckpad.

Hahahaha. I've been using an anti-ad script for so long I forgot there are even ads on this website.
I like the trackpad because it doesn't get my screen all icky with fingerprints. And yeah, web browsing is often made easier by having a small cursor. I browse almost exclusively in desktop mode, so most of the UI elements show up tiny.

same like me, just using it for tiny links like the pages in forums.
otherwise i use the screen
greetings
its the best of both worlds surely!!
at least we have the option to use the trackpad if we want, plenty of other tablets owners dont have that option, lets be thankful for what we have here eh?

get flyer to display on all 4 sides

the flyer only displays the right way in landscape one way
and portrait one way
is it possible to get it show in the correct way on the other 2 sides ?
It could be done, but no developer has implemented it on the Flyer yet.
I really sort of enjoy being able to lay in bed on my left side and the screen doesn't auto rotate.

Yes I agree, full rotation at times can be very annoying. It was one of the many minor but niggling factors about my Samsung 7 Plus, which I've now sold on.

I agree as well. Auto-rotating to all sides makes it easier to unintentionally (and annoyingly) rotate the screen in some situations, such as when the tablet is laid on a table. Or just tilting a bit too far to the right. My wife's iPad rotates to all sides (maybe not "upside-down" in portrait), and it seems to make it unintentionally rotate far more often then my Flyer.
It is definitely a boon, since it prevents unintentional rotation, unless, the tablet has been plugged for charging and you are lying down in a way which twists the wire of the charger.

On screen navigation buttons?

Am I the only one who wants on screen buttons over the hardware ones? If I knew how to do it I would, but it seems like it should be a simple tweak, has anyone done this yet?

Maybe an app can do the task. As far as using the AOSP flavor of buttons? Won't happen. Sense framework won't allow it, pretty much. Same reason why we can't use the crt animation.

I like the hardware buttons...on screen is cool but take to much space on your screen.

Seems redundant and ununnecessary when you have hardware buttons already.

the 5" screen is huge, and can sometimes make using it with one hand a little hard. The on screen keys disappear when they need to, like looking at pictures or watching videos, other than that, its just like using a 4.7" screen or something around that. When using the phone with one hand it can be a little difficult to stretch your thumb all the way down to the hardware buttons without having to readjust how your are hold the phone in your hand, they are badly placed on the bottom like that.

Either you have small hands or are holding your phone weird. I have average size hands and I can reach the hw buttons and the whole screen except like a quarter of an inch at the top left without readjusting my hand.

nope, regular hands, its just the phone is so tall that its sometimes a pain with how they placed the buttons at the absolute bottom of the phone.

True optical mouse

I recently had an idea for an Android app, and possibly accessory. Turn on the flash LED and use the camera like the sensor in an optical mouse, to detect motion compared to the table. This might require a custom case with a lens and spacers. I would pay money for this, and I bet many others would.
Sorry if I am posting in the wrong section.

Using the light like that isn't healthy for it, better off using an app like this: free mouse app

But that app is a trackpad, not a mouse of the sort that you move around.
Is it possible to PWM the flash? If not, you could always attach a $1 LED flashlight to the case.
I would definitely pay money for this. to be able to use my phone as a Bluetooth mouse would be so much better then using the laptop trackpad. with camera + accellerometer/gyro, I would imagine you could get a reasonable level of responsiveness. seems surprisin that this hasn't been done yet.

People's edge

Is there any way to get the notification to light up when the phone is face up? And if not how hard would that be to implement in an app? That notification light is real slick imo its just such a shame I never place my phone upside down like that.

Shouldn't it be possible as a third party app? It doesn't seem like too difficult of a task but then again my programming experience is limited

Unfortunately these all require the phone's entire screen to be on. I don't think, with stock firmware and kernal, that we would be able to have Samsung's feature work as it should with the phone facing up. It would be nice tho, since we could have it only use the edge of the screen and save power.
Why on earth did Samsung decide on face down.

Seriously. Especially when it probably took more work to limit it than it would have to make it not matter.
