Issues with bluetooth file transfers - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

I cannot seem to reliably transfer files between my Nexus S and my Prime using bluetooth. I almost always get a "Service Discovery Failed" or "Stream Closed" message. Does anyone know anything about this? Is anyone having similar problems?
Update: Upon further research, it might be because of the file type. Frigging ridiculous! It won't accept a .apk file via bluetooth. If you rename it to something else, like .zip the file is accepted. Is Google starting to implement some anti piracy nonsense?
I have lots of games I have purchased using SIM spoofing apps(Android Market does not support my country) on my Nexus S that I cannot access on my unrooted Prime. This is why I want to transfer them over from my Nexus S.

trying doing it via USB or sdcard. What I did was copied a few apks from my infuse to my home cloud drive. And then just used es file explorer from my prime to pull them back down and bad a Bing. Got them apps

That's a viable work around. But, it's tedious to do this for every new app I purchase. Anyway, the renaming file extension works but, I was just taken aback by the need for it.

I have been using androwook rom v1.5 but still can not receive apk files from other devices .. is there any solution other than changing the file extension will be accepted?

I just email the .apk to myself when I want it on another device. Never had an issue that way. Good luck

only zip files it is possible to transfer not apk

Dropbox is awesome for this, I backup apps using Astro & upload them to my Dropbox.
Comes in handy when you download a dud update like the latest YouTube app

Using Dropbox to install apps

I thought this was pretty cool, read it over on Gizmodo. Its really easy to do.
1. Install Dropbox on your computer and your phone
2. Download APK files from a website like xda
3. Drag and drop APK files into your Dropbox folder
4. Open Dropbox app on phone and navigate to APK files
5. Click on APK file file, file will download and ask to install
6. Install file
Read it on gizmodo as well, tried it for the first time today, wicked easy.
I've been doing on my G1 and now I do it this on my Vibrant. I love Dropbox.
I use Belvedere to automatically move anything with the .APK extension to my dropbox/Android/APK folder. Couldn't be easier.
Can we move Avatar to Dropbox (below 2GB) and delete it off the card? I mean, yes.. I know THAT can be done, but I was curious if this broke some patent or anything?
I am BRAND new to Dropbox (not even on the PC yet).
I'm a fan of this:
http://labs.dashwire.com/drop
awesome drop is nice moving a file from your pc to your phone... but it's a little limited in that's the only flow.
What if you want to share a file on your phone? I'd like to upload it to dropbox and share it that way...

Yes you can move it there but if you want to watch it you would have to download it back to the phone every time you want to watch it. Dropbox can't stream the movie if thats what you were trying to do, dropbox is used for online storage.
There's an app called WebSharing that works over Wifi. It runs a web server on the phone which you can access from any computer and allows you to upload/download and move files around on the phone. It's pretty cool, check it out.
Is there a way to create a dropbox folder on the sd or internal memory and keep it synced with dropbox? Currently I have to download the pdf files that I store on my drop each time I want to view them, sometimes im not connected online.

I don't believe there is an offline mode. You can download the files the ln use file manager to copy them to a different folder for later but the initial time you need web.

Yep I use it everyday love it WebSharing bought and paid for no need for dropbox here I'm never really installing apk's anywhere but home. Plus if i'm not at home I just download it to the phone and it handles the rest.

Transferring APK's via bluetooth

Hi, lately ive been trying out a few apps from this website's forums and I want to transfer them to my friend's phones but I can't...
I have been using astro file manager + the bluetooth plug in to try and browse, copy/paste them, but this doesnt work most of the time
By using astro and then bluetooth file transfer, it says transfer complete after a few seconds and nothing happens on the other device
What is the best way to do this quick and fast?
I usually use the "bluetooth file manager" app...never failed me yet.
sent from my uncyanogen modded epic 4g. with the key skips.
How do you do it? Do you use the bluetooth file transfer app from selecting and sending the files?

"Bluetooth File Manager" app transfers data very solwly than the default android app. Pair your device with your friends properly .( I think its the problem of pairing the devices)
There are only a few brands of devices that are capable of sending and receiving *.apk files without problems.
I've tested Samsung, HTC, and Sony and they can transfer installers without problems. Others confirmed to be not working are custom ROMs, Asus, and Huawei.
It seems that Bluetooth APK transfer is blocked by default as an anti-piracy measure, even if you check "Unknown Sources". It seems that these 3 companies intentionally disabled it to allow their own app store to run.
I don't know if those who make custom roms are aware of it but it will be a nice feature if you could enable *.APK transfers so we can run custom ROMs without issues.
If it gives you such a headache, then why not sending it over mail, it won't take long though

a stock rom would never allow apks to be downloaded via the device plus it requires the user to use their data network (or internet capable WiFi) There are a lot of APKs that exceed the allowable size limit (+25MB).
The only way to do that for now is to download a free bluetooth file transfer app to bypass the restriction. You would also want to download a file explorer also if you don't have one. I was able to send APKs to my co-worker's Cyanogenmod HTC HD2 but I forgot the exact program she used that worked.
If you want to transfer apks via bluetooth, simply rename its extension from .apk to .zip/.mp3/.mp4/(whatever you want)...after you receive the file, just rename its extension back...

How to prevent the gallery app from reading the entire sd card?

Sorry if this is a re post. Is there a way to specify specific directories where the gallery app should read pictures from? The app is now looking through hundreds of music directories and loading album art which I want avoid.

that's a handy app, placing .nomedia files manually can be a pain in the ass depending on how many folders you want to exclude (i have folders with comic books in jpg)
thanks!
did this work for anyone on the prime? I couldn't get it to work. even with folder checked off then update gallery, it still showed the unwanted pics in there. like I wanted to hide pics from download folder subdirectory miscellaneous. I tried by checking off download folder, didn't work. then tried by specifying the specific one /mnt/sdcard/Download/misc. still no luck
Yeah, didn't work for me either. It said I didn't have the permissions to access the directories (I was trying to do this on a directory in my external storage.)
Any alternative apps to the stock gallery?

no, you place an empty file essentially that is names ".nomedia" in any folder you don't want the OS to scan for media related files and add them to things like the music player or the gallery.
that's what the app does for you, but for some reason it isn't working (i haven't checked to see if it's actually placing the files in the folder, but if it's not then that's the problem)
easiest way is to create a blank txt document in notepad or something, then save it and change the name (and extension) to ".nomedia" and then copy and paste that wereever you want on your tablet.
Exactly. and sorry for that spelling earlier wow... I didn't realize how terrible it was. lol
Thanks alot man
I use Quickpic (on all my Android devices). Lets you choose which folders to include and/or exclude (a must when you have N64oid high res texture packs for stuff like Mario 64 on your device - thousands of tiny image files!).
I use "Gallery Excluder" on my phone. Not sure if it works on TP prime or not, still waiting on mine.

Quick question do these apps hide the files from the associated programs, meaning i don't want my cover art to show in my gallery but i want my audio player to still be able to find it , seems like these no media file work arounds wouldn't allow that to happen, why can't we have the options to pick media paths for all stock viewers....any suggestions on how to hide from some programs and not others ?thanks for helping me figure this stuff out ...
Sent from my Transformer Prime TF201 using Tapatalk
gallery excluder just updated recently but still doesn't work on the prime. I uninstalled it as it seems useless if not working properly.
It's simple as renaming the folders with a . at the beginning of any file you don't want the gallery to read. (ex.- .icons)

Just found this...comments say it works on Galaxy Nexus (ICS) so maybe it works on HC. I will let you know.
This is one thing that bugs the hell out of me,
Added the file .nomedia flag file but it still pulls data into the gallery, really anoying
Anyone else got any ideas on this one ?
Thanks

Same here....I will try out that quickpic app someone mentioned before. Galary excluder and renaming the files don't work. I think gallery app kinda bugged anyways. Like not all the time pics saved from websites show up there or something. Its weird. But they will all be there if you look in Astro. I think it depends on where its saved originally. If its saved someplace and you move it to the folder you want, it won't show up. If you save it to location you want first, then it'll more than likely show up. Opera mobile good at letting you save stuff where ever you want as it has a mini file explorer pop up once downloading about to begin. The others browsers don't n usually save to download folder.

ES File Explorer fails wifi copy.

I noticed an issue with my favorite file explorer the other day, when trying to copy a large file over wifi, it would fail every time when letting the tablet sleep. I am using an alternate file explorer for those large file copies but really wish I could move back to ES FE. Anyone have this experience? It fails literally every time I do a file over a few hundred Meg. I don't have the issue on any of my other android devices, but none have ICS. Maybe an issue with ICS and that program? Or just my Prime? It is not losing the signal, just stops the transfer--- still shows that it is going but never completes and file size never changes.
I have the same problem. Beside that I'm somehow unable to cancled a transfer, I had several failed downloads of huge files. Also switched to a different file-browsers which works without problems.
Mine failed too...
Can anyone confirm other devices that have ICS having the issue? It would be helpful to know if it had something to do with ICS or just the prime. I actually installed it based on recommendations from this forum and found issues with it on my first large file transfer... I can agree on how powerful and simple it is but switched over to File Explorer HD because it works. Not that I recommend FEHD, full of ads and still not "HD" enough for the prime
Is there a manual somewhere how to transfer files with wifi using es explorer?

It's not a prime (or ICS) specific problem. It happens frequently across all my devices with ES File Explorer. And as far as I can tell, there's no way to cancel a copy once it's started.
wohli - there may be a manual somewhere but it really is pretty easy. Just tap the "local" selection on the top left corner of the app, then choose LAN. You can either scan for servers with SMB shares or you can attach one by using the "add" dialog, that will ask for user/pw, IP or name, domain (optional). Then hold on a file from one of the shares for the copy option. Then use the same menu at the top left to get back to local, then tap the paste button at the top.
vels13 - Thanks for the info!! Question: Why do you think there are so many people that recommend ESFE if it doesn't even do a decent wifi copy? I have seen it plastered on every "first apps to install" post and "recommended apps" post!!

I actually like the app and use it for wifi copying, but it does halt frequently when copying files over wifi and that's kind of frustrating. Usually happens on really large files or when you queue up a bunch. I don't think I've ever been able to queue up say 10 video files and get them all to finish. The annoying thing is when it finally does stop copying, you can't cancel and restart, you have to force close the app or reboot phone. I've experienced this on transformer prime, galaxy 10.1, and my HTC glacier. Works great for smaller files though.
This is probably obvious, but I believe the Prime is set to turn off wifi when sleeping by default. This might be an ICS default.
You can change it under Wifi->Advanced.
Yeah, same here. Both my phone and Prime have that problem w/ ES.
I don't know if there's a better WiFi file manager on the market but I really like ES.
Even if wifi is set to sleep when the prime does... the prime will not fully sleep with a data stream going of any kind. Other File explorers do not fail when it sleeps.
vels-- Why would you use something that constantly errors, and has the issues that you described? Like I said, I am using File Explorer HD.. at least it works!
Does ANYONE know of a good file explorer that will pull files down from wifi reliably? It would also be nice if it had most of the features from ES and even better yet if it displayed at native resolution for our primes!!!
Anyone?

It works well enough for what I need it for 95% of the time. If I need to transfer a big file or a lot of files, it's quicker to do it over USB anyways.
guys,
you may use airdrod for wi-fi file transfer if that's what you wanted
Try Ghost commander. Not a good interface, but work well for wifi transfer, and you can see a speed - current/average.
it's the same man

[Q] How can I make file transfer faster from PC to Note using AOSP ROMS?

Hey Guys,
So I guess it is a known issue with AOSP/AOKP Roms that MTP file transfer is not working and you have to use USB Storage mode to transfer files from your PC to your Note --- unless I'm doing something wrong.
Unfortunately, File Transfer is just too slow. I only hit 1.86MB-2.00MB/sec (according to Windows 7). I've tried so many ROMs like AoSPxxx, KingKang, SeraSlim and they display the same issue.
I tried Non-AOSP Roms, which of course, uses MTP - file transfer is so much different. probably 20x faster.
To the Guys who are using AOSP/AOKP ROMS, what method do you use to transfer files to your Note? Do you use a third party app to have a faster file transfer?
I tried wirelessly using File Expert's FTP and it is actually a little bit faster compared to the USB storage mode, but not by much (Wireless FTP transfer is about 3MB/sec)
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks
Keis Air

Remove sd card, put it in an adaptor, and move the files within your pc file manager. Its way faster for moving lots of files at once, including time to shut down and reboot phone.
You said any suggestion welcomed.
Lol ... yup i forgot to mention in my original post ... of course except that
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using Tapatalk 2
Hmm I tried kies. I think it also uses FTP since the same file I copied using File Expert and FTPServer finished at the exact same time as Kies Air. So it is also around 3.0MB/sec
Is there an app that can utilize file transfers using the USB cable connection instead of wireless?
I guess I must be easy to please. 3mb per second is more than enough for me. That being said, I get approx 5mb through es file explorer ftp
