Sprint HTC EVO 3D vs Verizon Motorola Droid RAZR Maxx
My Opinion
After 8 months with my EVO 3D I have decided to switch to a different network. Verizon, despite the bump in cost was the one I chose because they do have one of the best networks (at least in my area) and Sprint has the worst network (at least for me). So, before turning in my Sprint account I stopped by a Verizon store and picked up the RAZR Maxx, based mostly on the battery life and praise from a friend who owns a Droid RAZR. So I have both phones. Lets do a side by side! If I can get a third device of some kinds for pictures I will add them as well. Pardon my clumsiness if this thread is horribly written, I am a coder not a documentarian.
Now don’t get me wrong, I love my EVO 3D and if I could take it with me I would. Sadly I can’t so I figure I have both phones in front of me let’s do a comparison review. This review will not include data transfer rates as Sprint only has 3G in my area and Verizon’s 4G LTE network blankets the area. I also will try to not use many specific specs for the comparison as anyone can go look up the size of the RAZR and the size of the 3D, I will focus more on the feel.
Size and Screen
EVO 3D
The general shape and size of the EVO 3D is awesome. It fits well in the palm of the hand and has a decent weight. The screen is a 4.3” qHD and looks gorgeous to me. It is bright and the colors pop but when you put it next to the Maxx they don’t pop as much and are a bit faded. The 3D feature is a neat novelty. I enjoy watching 3D movies on the phone and playing the 3D games is interesting, but buying all these things that are only 3D makes this mostly a novelty. The touchscreen is responsive.
RAZR Maxx
The RAZR is a much flatter device but makes up for this in length and width. It is a bit awkward to hold while talking, but not so much as to be uncomfortable. I tend to use Bluetooth headsets exclusively. It feels a tough lighter than the EVO 3D which is nice if you do tend to hold your phone. This one also has a 4.3” screen but it is Super AMOLED. It is a bit brighter than the qHD on the EVO 3D but overall is too close for my own naked eyes. The touchscreen is responsive.
Winner: Both
Camera
EVO 3D
The EVO 3D sports a pair of 5mp cameras on the back for 3D capture. It does this well, but warning if you are not used to looking at a 3D picture taken with this device then your eyes might go into shock. Once you are used to it then it is not so bad. The front camera is ok as are most. 2D pictures are crisp and the colors are decent. The shutter time is a bit slow for my tastes.
RAZR Maxx
The RAZR sports a single 8mp camera on the back. The quality of the pictures is very nice. Colors are brighter than the EVO 3D and it maintains the crispness of the photo. What really wowed me with the camera are both the night time picture taking and the shutter speed. At night with the flash pictures maintain crispness unlike every other phone camera I have used. The shutter speed is amazing as well. It is not quite as fast as the iPhone but it is dang close. Another nice bonus is Image Stabilization.
Winner: Motorola Droid RAZR Maxx
Internal Hardware and Ports
EVO 3D
The EVO has a Micro USB port for charging and video output with an adapter. Its Bluetooth works as expected with decent range to my Plantronics Voyager Pro. It is version 3 + HS providing 24 Mbit/s throughput. I haven’t tried that feature so I am not sure how accurate that spec is. The processor is a dual core 1.2 Ghz Snapdragon. It performs well and I will demonstrate stock ROM performance with benchmarks below. The battery is a bit lack luster on this phone. I feel I have to keep a charger on me at all times and keep it plugged up in the car all the time to keep charge.
RAZR Maxx
The RAZR also has a Micro USB, but includes a dedicated Micro HDMI port (yay) for use with video output and webtop features. I haven’t tried the webtop feature but it looks awesome and I am purchasing the HD dock soon to give it a spin. It sports Bluetooth 4.0 and functions as well as the EVO’s Bluetooth. The RAZR contains a TI OMAP 1.2 Ghz processor, benchmarks below. Battery… amazing. I have been abusing my phone for over 4 hours this morning and I am still sporting 80%. Imagine when it gets optimized with some crazy awesome ROM.
Winner: Motorola Droid RAZR Maxx
OS
EVO 3D
The EVO is running Android 2.3.4 with HTC Sense 3.0. For this I am going to talk about Sense a little. I love Sense, I find it to be awesome in every way except space on the phone. I may be a bit biased towards HTC (view my sig) but I like the stuff they put on and the Sprint stuff is excessive but not as bad as Verizon.
RAZR Maxx
The RAZR is running Android 2.3.6 with the Motorola interface (if it is still called Blur). There is a lot of bloatware on the phone from Motorola and Verizon. It is still snappy and responsive but having a dozen apps you do not need but cannot remove is annoying.
Winner: HTC EVO 3D
Benchmarks
I tried to get screen shots but Eclipse is being a pain and I am at work so I don’t have time to troubleshoot it. But here are the actual results. Note on Quadrant that I started the tests at the same time and the EVO was done by the time the RAZR made it through the first 5 CPU tests. As you can see the EVO slammed the RAZR on the CPU test in Quadrant.

Quadrant and Antutu are almost mirrors of themselves. Not sure which one is more accurate. All in all my opinion of the phones is similar. The both have ups and downs. Ones is mostly network related and some minor hardware deficiences and the other is software bloated. So hopefully this will help someone decide ( I have seen the questions more than once )
nice review but you didn't compare incoming & outgoing voice quality? they are phones after all!

Oh Nice ! Personnally, they are both very good, the power for power is useless...
The Design of Razr is so.....beautiful ! But Evo is better for dev and custom rom...

Tested both phones for a few hours. The main points:
1. Compared side by side, the display on the Rezound makes the Razr look like a dim, pixelated and over saturated mess. Stunningly so.
2. Rezound is far more comfortable and usable with one hand.
3. Rezound runs a lot cooler
4. N64Oid and hi def Flash tests are good to show what the chipset can really do for power. Rezound plays both more smoothly than the Razr.
5. The camera on the Rezound is almost the same level better as comparing the displays. No contest. Razr is weak in comparison for speed and picture quality.
6. Per some VZW folks and supported by the Mobiletechreview review, the 4G on the Rezound is more stable and picks signal up better in weaker areas.
7. Speaker quality is about the same and ditto for 3.5mm sound quality (I do not like Beats, since the Klipsch S4 buds are a lot better for sound quality).
8. Phone call quality seemed fine, but not as good IMO as the Razr or my Droid 3. Still good.
IMO, the Rezound is a better device, but battery life is not a known ATM.

obviously 3. for the win
The Razr is another interim phone until they release their HD model. The display on the Rezound is reason enough to skip the Razr. The camera on the Rezound is icing on the cake.
Razr has a battery that can not be removed. A bit disappointed in moto on this phone, but they were trying to get the thinnest smartphone to date, and they did it. It just came with sacrifices that a lot of us won't accept over a few millimeters in width.
Due to extreme boredom at work I've decided to take a shot at a review. So here it is my official review of the Motorola Droid Razr.
After reading many bad reviews and going against my own initial choice of the HTC Rezound I decided to take a leap and pick up the Droid Razr. To say this phone is sharp is an understatement ( see what I did there? Sharp. Razr... Ok i'm done I swear) The phone is amazingly thin and very light weight. Some may find the phones width a little odd to hold but its something you get used to over time. One thing I found is that for a phone this thin the over all build quality is a step above the competition. The back is a soft touch piece of kevlar with a nice black and grey pattern. The screens glass is cut to look edged which adds a bit elegance to the shape. The screen is a very impressive quarter hd super amoled advanced screen made by Samsung. Colors are vibrant, contrast is amazing with blacks being jet black and not washed out like lcd screens. I find super amoled to be second to none on a mobile phone. Another note on the screen is that it is made of Gorilla glass. (check out peoples YouTube videos for scratch tests) lastly on the build of the phone is the splash resistant nano coating protecting the insides.... i'm not testing that lol. Motorola really went all out on the rebirth of the Razr. As for the software, I was worried about using a phone with Motoblur due to the fact that it used to slow down whatever phone it was on. Blur has been stripped down to a very subtle user interface that is very fast and manages to keep a considerable amount of eye candy. Like when you transition from screen to screen the widgets and icons gleam. Driving Android gingerbread version 2.3.5 (It will be getting 4.0 ice cream sandwich in early 2012) is a very fast 1.2ghz dual core processor and a full gigabyte of ram. As for storage you get 8 gigabytes of internal storage and a little under 3 gigabytes of application storage. The Razr includes a 16 gigabyte micro sd card for additional storage. Moving on to the camera, this is the other area reviewers knocked the phone. Yes in really low light it fails to take quality pictures. This is however a cell phone. Not a dslr camera. I found in adequate lighting the pictures were sharp and colors were accurate. The camera is also capable of recording full 1080p high definition. The front facing camera is a very nice 2 megapixel camera that can record or video chat in full 720p hd. I will be posting sample images to demonstrate. Another feature that seems to be coming standard on a lot of Motorola devices is a micro hdmi output which I frequently use for streaming Netflix on my hdtv. Last but not least is call quality and data connectivity. After all this is a phone first and foremost. Reception is probably the best I've ever gotten on a smart phone. I have yet to get no service or even dip to below 2 bars. This includes going inside places like Walmart. Calls come through loud and clear with almost no distortion and the speaker phone is loud and clear. As for data I get very good speeds on 3g and often don't bother using wifi which speaks a lot for the phone. To wrap up my review I have never been a fan of motorola and often had numerous issues with many models, however I can't deny they have some of the most solid phones build wise and they have redeemed themselves with the Droid Razr. If your holding onto a phone upgrade you won't regret getting the Razr. Only phone that I think will outshine it is the Galaxy Nexus. With the Rezound by HTC coming in a close second.
See the camera samples below.
Thanks for reading and look for my review of the Galaxy Nexus as soon as it gets a solid release date

Great review! Just made the wait for mine that much longer
Thanks i'm really enjoying the razr. I bet with ICS the phone will be a beast. I'm going to try the nexus in a Verizon store and see if I really want to exchange my razr for it.

I read that the battery cannot be removed. Would it be an issue? Because I'd like to buy a phone which I could use for some years and I'm afraid that the battery could eventually be a problem. I'm thinking about the SgsII and the Razr (I don't know if the nexus will be available in Chile) Maybe you could help me to decide (hope you're not a fanboy, and please no offense) Thanks for the review.

S2's screen is terrible, low resolution, color bugs,... but S2 has a wide support community and seems smoother than Razr
Anyway, I like Razr's design, launcher UI and icons
actually I have to correct you on the S2 is bad. In fact I have both phones along with thinking about the Nexus.
The SG2 LTE I find is a great phone worked flawless from the day I bought it mostly keep it on haven't turned it off in like maybe 3 days and hasn't rebooted or powered off by itself. The screen they say is crap compared to the Razr, I have compared both I find the Razr Screen has more jaggies than the SG2. In fact the Screens are both made by Samsung and both are AMOLED. Motorola boasts that their screen is SuperAdvanceAmoled. To clairfy this AdvanceAmoled was abandoned by Samsung in favour or RGB stripe Amoled on the SG2. The Razr screen is comprised of RGBG pixels meaning there is an extra green pixel to make up an element. With this arrangement Motorola claims to have a higher resolution screen but fail to tell you that the actual pixel density isn't as high because of the use of 2 subpixels to display one element. This is my understanding you have to read on this based on Samsungs report of the Pentile display matrix. RGB stripe on the SG2 has a much cripser and more focused display than the pentile displays. So even at low resolution at 800x480 with a 4.5 inch display you would hardly notice the pixels unless you like using a magnifying glass to look at your display. The Nexus uses a Pentile display but a much newer version than what is used on the Razr. This display uses the Pentile matrix but with a much higher density and pixel count so you wouldn't see much pixelization but again how close to you actually look at your display. The truth is having a higher pixel density on a screen that is under 5 inches isn't going to matter much. Until you get to the 7 inch size then you'll start to notice the pixels I mean really how small do you want the text to be on a web page on a 4.5 inch screen or for that matter 4.3? I could barely make out text on the screen unless I actually magnify it a bit but then again I don't use one to view web pages. No bad display here and very happy with this phone SG2, seriously debating Nexus. After reading all the comments here about the Nexus I think I'll stay with the SG2 until they update it to ICS or until somethinb better comes out.
Don't get me wrong I like the Razr it has tons of great features software wise and hardware. The build quality is excellent based on the many devices I have had in the past. There is the drawback of non removable battery, but the slim design does make up for that. The camera is great and the autofocus smooth along with the video. One little issue I had was it was slow to switch from 2G to 3G or 4G when available. I find when I'm on 4G with 1 bar and it has to switch to 2G it actually shuts the network off and then connects back.
I'm sure most are correctable through software but there isn't enough to make the phone not worthy of consideration.
I can get this phone for about $60. Only issues with my 3D are the Virgin Mobile firmware junk (I don't think this affected me as bad as others), and the somewhat crappy camera. I don't use the 3D function, but the camera and video recorder still seem lower grade to me. Took a bunch of pics and video of my lil guy's preschool graduation, and was not impressed by the quality from a not so far distance. Besides that this phone still rocks. Just wondering what the thoughts are of people who came from a E3D?
Performance in general is much better (get quadrant scores of 5000 on the LTE), and so is the camera. I was running ICS on my 3D, so general functionality is pretty much the same for me.
I liked getting rid of the extra "3D toggle" button since I never used 3D anyways. the LTE is slightly bigger, but considerably lighter. Call quality/signal seem about the same unfortunately. Maybe once the "HD voice" is available that will change.

I agree with this
I actually used the 3d feature alot (went as far a ripping my 3d BD-roms to ms SDcard to watch without glasses)
I purchased my Lte for $158 and I am overly pleased with its performance and feel but the Camera is a night and day difference... My 3d had overly muted colors and it was usually full of noise and when your using the camera to take pictures of kids you get blurring alot. I've had mine a little less than a day but the battery is awesome to boot so if you can upgrade do so
Awesome. I figured the regular camera mode on the 3D would be sufficient, but I'd have to agree on the noise and blurring. Thanks for the comparison input guys.

I only had the 3D for about a week before my LTE came, but it feels way better than the 3D ever did. It was a great phone, but I am more satisfied with the ELTE in every way. Screen, native software, camera, processing power. I can't think of a single thing that this phone can't beat. That's because it's much more new, but this was also my switch to Sprint, and your HTC selection has always been far superior to Verizon's, so I'm pretty geeked over this phone.
It all comes down to how you feel about your current phone. If you're satisfied, stay where you are, but if you're not, this phone is a great way to fix it.
Tapatalked from my shiny new HTC Evo LTE
The screen alone makes it worth it.
Bonus: camera, kickstand, lightness, and battery life
I couldn't be happier.
Yeah, so, I have an upgrade in a 3 weeks, and I really want to get rid of this godforsaken DX2. So, non-biased in any sense, which is the best phone of the two, overall. I'm 15, and I live on my phone. I really want whichever one is best for battery, music, and display
btw- I know the s3 has a bigger battery, but from what I've heard, it doesn't matter much, since the display is so huge
Thanks guys!
I am also on a DX2 and waiting to upgrade soon. It has some good roms but I really want 4g now. Anyway if your just looking to compare screen, battery, and music between the DINC 4g and SGS3 then both are going to excel. DINC 4g has beats audio, which is a plus and really does enhance the music, but also just adds some DPS (digital sound processing) perks. My brother has a rezound too and compared with my DX2, which has more than acceptable sound quality, the rezound is better but not by leaps and bounds. I would suspect, but only speculating that the SGS3 will also have very good sound, even compared to the beats audio. Displays are both great, but remember SGS3 is larger at 4.8 in at 1280x720 and the DINC 4g display is smaller at 4 in with 960x540. Pixel density SGS3 at 306 ppi and DINC 4g 275 ppi. SO really both screens are going to look great one super amoled and the other super LCD. Battery life also comparable, especially with more efficient LTE radios build onto the SOC, and like you said battery capacity to screen size ratio is similar.
Im still debating both. Might want to consider if roms and rooting are your cup o tea. Then youll want to consider that both will see a lot of dev support. The SGS3 because it is a beast of a phone, but does have a locked bootloader and DINC 4g because of its legacy and unlockable bootloader. So after all that really down to a matter aesthetics probably.
I have both in my hands now testing for my company. I've pretty much ignored the HTC and now just getting to it as I haven't been able to put the GS3 down. I'll be moving to the GS3 from my Razr Maxx, and I love that phone.
The Incredible LTE has the advantage of the superior camera (not as good as the One series, but better than the GS3 camera esp, in low light). Also sometimes the Incredible LTE feels more comfortable to hold because of the size, but the smaller screen is bothering me since I'm used to the bigger phones now. Although the phone is smaller, it's noticeably thicker than the GS3, so I would handle both in the store before you made your decision to see if you're alright with it. Both phones feel "plasticky" but still solid and not cheap feeling.
The Incredible LTE has Beats integration, but DOES NOT come up with the Beats headphones like the Rezound did. I think there are some DSP apps that can make any ICS phone sound as good if not better than the Beats integration anyway. Not sure if the Incredible LTE comes with apt-X support which is actually more important to me than Beats integration (apt-X does come on the GS3 so if you get bluetooth headphones/speakers/receiver w/ apt-X tech then it will sound way better)
I HATE that they did away with the menu button and went with a recent button instead on the HTC. I NEVER use the recent button as I have other apps I prefer to get to that with. I use Menu a lot more and the fact that it's missing is really bothering me (although I'll be looking to remap the recent to menu function next). Lots of apps haven't gone to the new way google wants apps to use menu so you get this ugly bar at the bottom of the screen with just the menu button by itself. Not sure if that remap hack i thought i saw will fix this.
I'm going to compare the rezound and incredible 4G in 5 different categories. I hope this guide is helpful for people trying to decide between the two devices.
Software (Stock):
Rezound 3/5
The Rezound's ships with ICS and sens 3.6, which is less than impressive. It has beats audio, but only in the stock HTC music app.
Incredible 5/5
The Incredible ships with ICS and sense 4.0, thats about as good as it gets. Beats audio in all apps.
Hardware (Besides Screen and Battery):
Rezound 4/5 Antutu Benchmark: 6150
The Rezound has a snapdragon S3 duel core CPU clocked at 1512mhz. You can overclock a rooted device. Even though it is clocked higher than the Incredible and has a higher benchmark score, it isnt as fast and responsive. It also lacks NFC and imagesense, both of which are included with the incredible. The rezound included Beats by Dr Dre earbuds, which are very nice.
Incredible 5/5 Antutu Benchmark: 5705
The Incredible has a duel core snapdragon S4 CPU clocked at 1200mhz, there is currently no root, so no overclocking. It is as responsive and fast as the galaxy S3 an it outperforms the rezound by far.
Battery:
Rezound 3/5
The rezound has a 1400mAh battery. The battery life on the Rezound is bad. It has such a great screen that it uses the battery ridiculously fast. If you cant charge your phone at some point in the middle of the day, get the incredible.
Incredible 5/5
The incredible has a 1700mAh battery. The OEM battery easily lasts an entire day. I use the extended (2150mAh) battery and with extremely heavy use, i still have 60% at the end of the day.
Screen:
Rezound 5/5, 4.3 in, 720x1280 SuperLCD, 342PPI.
This screen is beautiful, one of the best displays on any phone.
Incredible 4/5, 4.0in, 540x960 SuperLCD, 275PPI.
Although the pixel density and resolution are much lower, you actually dont see much of a difference.
Development:
Rezound 3/5
The rezound has root, S-OFF and many different ROMS, including AOSP. But AOSP isnt perfect, and jellybean will never make it to this device. And most ROMs are based off of the stock incredible ROM, so the incredible will work better with sense 4.
Incredible 1/5
There is nothing because HTC wont allow you to unlock this device. But S-OFF is almost here so it gets a 1.
Total:
Rezound: 18/25
Incredible: 20/25
Bottom Line:
No matter what ROM you use, the rezound isnt as fast as the incredible, but they're close.
It comes down to deciding between battery life or screen size.
Has anyone here done a detailed comparison of the Droid Inc 4G vs the Rezound comparing the following :
1. Battery Life - the previous compares this -Droid Inc
2. 4G performance /radio
3. Performance on ICS/ Sense 4.0- the previous post compares this - Droid Inc
4. Camera
5. Voice/sound quality
6. GPS performance
I have a rezound, rooted with a custom ROM, but I am still not happy with battery life. I am considering the Droid Inc 4G, or maybe the Droid Razr M. I don't want one of the gargantua phones like Galaxy SIII, Htc one, etc.. So anyone do a detailed comparison?

Interesting post on the comparison! I wondered how the Inc compared. It was the first Smartphone I really wanted but it was out of stock when I tried to get one, so I switched to Sprint to get the EVO 4G (1st gen). Dumb move on my part. Cell coverage was awful in my area with Sprint. Dropped calls were routine so I switched our account back over to VZ and choked down the ETF with Sprint. Never look back, right?
I hope my response to Jperiod isn't considered 'hijacking' the thread. It's not my intent. I might be able to offer insights on the DINC 4G compared to the Rezound. I currently have both.
1 - Battery life of DINC 4G is amazing compared to the Rezound (stock batt vs stock batt); I use a 2700 mAh in my Rezound and I keep a portable rechargeable USB pack with me at all times, just in case.
2 - 4G radios are equivalent in my area of use; i.e. I've noticed no difference latching on and staying connected to 4G at high speeds nearly all the time
3 - I personally like the ICS implementation on the Rezound better than the DINC 4G, especially the email interface and also the 7 screen view doesn't turn solid grey on the Rezound versus the DINC 4G which has the opaque darker grey background. (When you hit the Home icon if you're already on your Home screen, you view all 7 screens in a 'zoomed out' mode, the background of each of the 7 screens is what I'm referring to - I'm just not sure what to call this viewing mode. Maybe 'tile mode'?)
4 - The camera on the DINC 4G is sub-par compared to the Thunderbolt and Rezound. I threw the TBolt in this comment as it's still one of the best camera phones out on the market. I've gotten some great pics from the TBolt and Rezound which is equally as good. The DINC 4G has difficulties in high light (sunny days) and low light. It's ok on an overcast day or in a well lit indoor environment. Sunny days in the shade will result in disappointing photos. That's one of the biggest issues I found on the DINC 4G.
5 - Voice quality on both phones is equivalent as far as I can tell. Audio via Bluetooth works well on both. Audio on my JBL OnStage with a cable works equally well on both.
6 - GPS performance is also equivalent as far as I can tell. I have no complaints with either.
None of this is scientific in any way. I don't really put a lot of bearing on things like Quadrant Scores because I personally think these gizmos are very much a personal preference and pocketbook issue, not a score issue.
The Rezound has been out a while and is in some circles, considered a dinosaur but it's a rock solid performer when you're lucky enough to have a fully functional, no issue unit out of the box. I bought mine off a person in Wisconsin and it was rooted with S-OFF and stock ICS ROM. Just the way I wanted it. Blemish free, near mint with several cases.
Oh yeah, speaking of cases... The DINC 4G is an orphan phone when it comes to options for cases but there are many for the Rezound and most are available at rock bottom prices if you know where to look.
Hope this is helpful. Thanks OP for starting this thread! There are a lot of people out there looking for a comparison of the two models.
