I have an Archos 10.1IT connected via Wi-Fi to local LAN. A couple of Samba shares are mounted using CifsManager. The unit runs UrukDroid 1.6.2.
The problem: when I move the unit outside the reach of the LAN, e.g, when I go to visit friends, often when I get there it's completely frozen and needs a reset/reboot. Putting the tablet into Deep Sleep before moving decreases, but not eliminates, the chance that it will end up frozen.
I tried to reproduce the problem by shutting down the local Wi-Fi but couldn't get the tablet to freeze.
Does this problem sound familiar to anyone? Other suggestions?
I remember I had reboots when loosing wifi-connection/turning it off while cifs was mounted. Not sure it its connected to.
Think last time it happened it was UD 1.5 - 1.6 (someting in between)
I aslo used CifsManager for mounting - but i don't think its the app creating the prob - rather the system driver maybe...
Sry all I can tell atm - I didn't use cifs for a while...

SOLVED -- Pilot Error: CFIG -- ref' post at bottom
An Amazon/Woot! G-tablet arrived yesterday, and I'm struggling to learn it as I have NO smart-phone (nor, obv., Android) experience. (I've 44 years of mostly UNIX computers, and I've been networking since dARPAnet days.)
From the start, I was able to CONNECT to my house Wireless router (and get an assigned IP#) BUT nothing that "should"[?] connect to the Internet did: the browser couldn't pull up Google, BBC.com, etc. and the email s/w didn't connect to my gmail acct.
I didn't let that bother me as the Big Goal was to load GingerBread, which I did: Android 2.3.3 (Kernel Version 2.6.32.36-aosp a.k.a. "G_Harmony_Gingerbreadv2.3.3"). Also loaded CWM and GAPPS. 'Took a long time to get that installation process right, but everything seems stable EXCEPT I still CONNECT to my wireless router but cannot get any program to interact with the Internet.
Any suggestions as to HOW to debug or fix this?
Android remains a puzzle to me; I don't grasp its organization and management:
I haven't figured out how to delete a Music file yet! (Once 'did -something- that momentarily displayed a garbage can, but haven't been able to reproduce that.)
I have a 32GB SD card which the Tablet acknowledges, but I haven't ever "seen" it over the USB connection (to Windows 7), not have I seen any Android tools to display/access it. Is it mounted on a UNIX-like directory? Or is it Invisible as an entity?
The #$%^'ing beast disconnected during my download of several books-on-CD (rip'd to MP3's) and now says the SC card is messed up... so I guess I have to erase it and download the data again... hoping it won't disconnect once more.
'Guess it's time to order a book on Android... sigh. If there are any online Primers you'd recommend, I'd appreciate a link!
Thanks, John
_______________
Edit: PS -- Erasing the SD card didn't fix the problem: I still get "an error was encountered on your SD card" when I go to the Music player. 'Guess that means using CWM to format something. More sighs....
_______________
Edit2: PPS -- Yet re-booting restored the Music files... however Windows 7 continues to think the tablet's "drive" needs an error scan/repair. O grief....
Do you have a file explorer installed? That wold easily let you delete and move files.
Your micro SD will not be detected by your computer. You will need to mount your device to the PC and load files onto internal SD then move them to the micro SD with a file explorer. Or you can get a usb SD reader and load them directly.
Do you have wpa or any other encryption running on your wifi? Different roms have trouble with certain protections. I suggest setting your router to accept only preset mac addresses you approve.
I might have disconnected with screen timeout. Set screen to never time out under settings.
Does your rom indicate internal mem as emmc or SD? Some are SD for internal and SD 2 for micro SD.

I knew FE apps existed, but presumed there was SOME way to delete w/o them. And... since the beast won't communicate to the internet I have to find another way to load apps (via my W7 computer). [I've used Win7 to delete tablet files over the USB port -- gack... that's a nasty method.]

I have a PC-attached SDHC reader and earlier looked at the SD card that way. However, I'm not sure what I can DO with data I load onto the SD card since I haven't been able to understand in what ways Android makes use of that SD card. [For example: if I placed a root-dir directory of Music on the card, would Android merge that with the internal Music files?]

I have some encryption, perhaps WPA, but the Android wouldn't declare that it has a Connection if it hadn't properly matched the security methods on the router. [I vaguely recall seeing the tablet flash a box with the protocol details it found the router using.]
Very frustrating. I expected a more intuitive structure to Android, and fewer problems. I bought this for a trip I'm taking on Friday, but it looks like I won't have email and browsing on that trip.
Most roms have FE apps installed but I'm guessing the barebones GB doesn't.
Have you tried opening your wifi so no password is needed just to see if its a tab flaw in the wifi antenna?
Music players vary. Stock, no. Power AMP yes. With power amp and some free apps you can set the directorys they search for music in.
GB is nice but it is still very fresh and the kinks are still getting workred out in the version for Gtab. There still isn't drivers to enable hardware acceleration. I would seriously recommend vegan b5.1.1 or the clemsyn/calculin rom. Both are super stable and very streamlined. And both are fully tested by thousands of other moders. Worth a shot.
Router?

The fact it is connecting to the router leads me to believe you may have a configuration issue on the router. Do you have the router locked to Mac address filtering or restrictions on access? If that is the case, your tab could connect to the router but not the net.

I found where while-on-outlet timeouts could be turned off on the Initial Android (that came on the tablet); I have been unable to find anything which allows more than a 30 minute timeout period on GingerBread.

I'm unsure where you're asking me to find this information: Within a PLUS/POwerOn boot (CWM)? or in the [lame] Storage information under Settings?

I've set nothing fancy on the router beyond basic encryption. I often have friends' computers in here for repairs, and those aren't blocked. Still, opening the router up is an interesting test for manana. Friday a.m. I have to be up and off to the airport around 4am, so I shouldn't be floundering around with this just now!
You wouldn't be able to tell without a file explorer. Just realized that. There has been debate about standard android (emmc/sd) and tablet android (sd/sd2) drive labeling. Didn't know what the newest GB used for labeling drives. It has caused lots of confusion and lead many to accidently format their SD (internal mem ) with cwm.

Just to get it running for your trip you could at least try a froyo rom.

I'm worn out, and have to crash now. Those are good points, and I'll pursue them ASAP.
But I'll pursue snoring just now!
Thanks to all!
Ahhh, a new day... and yesterday's advice to follow up on... and a solution found!
Pilot Error: Controlled Flight Into Terrain [CFIT]
I went to turn off the WPA [or whaddeva] security on the wireless router... and couldn't! Couldn't open the router at the usual 192.168.1.1.
'Did an IPCONFIG and WHOA! Definitely non-standard IP addresses for a home Router/Gateway/etc. Very much like... oh Dang... like Modem-delivered addresses.
Now I recall: just before a recent trip I helped a friend in BudaPest set up a Vulkano link to his mother's ComCast TV service... and to test that it worked from my house I had to directly wire my computer onto the Modem -- Vulkano wouldn't work through my router w/o unknown configuration changes. And I never reconnected the router, nor turned it off, so my tablet was connecting to a disconnected router.
With the router re-cabled, everything works... almost: now the tablet works, but I can't get a stable connection through the WIRED connection to my main computer... the one which was working 15 minutes ago before I re-inserted the router!!! I'm NOT asking for help on that: a few more reboots or a cable change and it will resume working, but for now I've switched to wireless on the computer. [Do't even suggest the most-obvious! I rebooted the modem & switch several times, and the computer as well. But I've now removed Vulkano s/w so maybe that will get the WIRED connection back up after the next reboot.]
Sigh... mea cukpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa.
Now, back to packing for Colorado! Thanks again!
Able to connect to Wifi, But no Internet access
Hey guys. I am new to the forum, and I am sorry if this has been solved, but I have benn having a hell of a time trying to figure this out. I just gor my G-tab, and with some help from my friend, we rooted it, installed CW, and installed Vegan Ginger Edition. I have another friend who is running the Vegan 5.1, and he has the same issue. We are in a building that has a preinstalled wireless system. We can see the repeaters, and connect to them, but we are unable to connect to the internet. The system requires a login. Another friend has a Sprint HTC phone and he is unable to get the internet either. Any suggestions of ideas?
Have had my nook tablet for awhile now...started with cm7 alpha 1...no issues with wifi connecting to my hotspot, work wifi (non secured guest network) or my home wifi...as of today I'm on alpha final and I come home to no wifi. Only thing different I did today was connect to my works secured wifi and shut off my nook tablet after leaving work and turned it back on at home. If i do a wifi scan my home network doesn't even show up. Rebooted my router (its a linksys router running tomato firmware) laptop, ps3, wii, and my other computer all see the wifi just fine....nook tablet does not see it. Short of reloading the whole cm7 alpha final rom...any other ideas? I've tried turning wifi off waiting a minute then back on, wiping out any and all other wifi found (aka forgetting any wifi profiles) as well as rebooting the nook tablet. Can the nook tablet only handle one type of secured wifi profile?
And an hour later...I mysteriously can connect to my wifi....on a whim I did setup a static IP for my Android device (static dhcp option on router) so if by chance it does have to do with leases that should solve that issue

WiFi weirdness
I'm seeing some strange issue with my wifi connections also. Not exactly what you're seeing, but an oddity that's turned up recently. I'm running CyanogenMod-7.1.0. Which I believe is the latest "stable" version.
What I'm seeing is that occassionally the wifi will lose connection and go into a "Turning Off" state that requires a hard power off (hold down power button for 10-15 seconds) and power back on (hold down power button for 5 seconds). This clears up my problem until it happens again. This seems to be fairly new, IE in the last week or so.
I'm connecting to different secured networks in the course of a day. IE several different work encrypted/open hot spots/networks and then a WPA secured wifi at home. Now I'm wondering if what I'm seeing is similar to you, in that the change in profiles is causing the lock up. I'll test it some and see if I notice a pattern.
having the same problem as you

I've been experiencing the same exact thing lately on my 8GB NT running cm7 alpha via sandisk sd card. Sometimes the wifi works great and then suddenly it stops working completely and the wifi on the nook doesn't show ANY wifi networks (ordinarily there will be 20 from neighbors, etc. at any given time). I have tried the turning off, rebooting, removing/forgetting, etc. and nothing brings it back. Until it randomly just returns on its own. This time, however, as of yesterday, the wifi is not "seeing" any other networks at all and it's just staying in that state. I'm at a loss about how to bring it back.
Any ideas??
I was going to say, "CM7 beta now works on the 8GB", but then I see that CelticWebSolution's post says it's internal...
Hmmm, then does succulent's CM7 beta for 8 go on a card ? ? ? . . I think that raywaldo was playing with that ? you could PM him. He is a very nice and helpful person. ( if they were handing out awards... he'd get one ! )

Then there is the adage, "when in doubt, wipe it out". This rule is "ONLY" true when it is relatively easy to re-create the end result ( card ).

Thanks.
Yeah...I've previously wiped it out and reinstalled it like 3 times already. Not hard to do...just inconvenient. I suppose that'll be my next step unless someone responds soon with a more permanent solution.
I have had similar problems running CM7 from an SD card. When the NT will not "see" a network that I know is there, I have found that deleting remembered Wireless Networks fixes the problem. I haven't taken the time to figure out why, I just know it works.
I've recently purchased a Galaxy Note II, i'm having an issue communicating to the device over wifi on my home network.
Wifi works fine in every other way.
Some examples of the issues I'm having:
Wifi Sync with Winamp won't detect my device unless I enable content sharing with DLNA
Wifi File explorer won't work on this phone, it's as if the phone is refusing connections over port 8000 with no user interaction
Device cannot be pinged (I'm not sure if my Desire HD responded but it never had any other the other issues)
I don't have any privacy guard type apps installed, I am rooted and I did have AdAway installed but I have tried it both with the host file installed and without.
I'm a bit lost here, and googling just returns results from 100's of people who can't connect to WiFi.
Ok, this isn't going to help anyone who comes across the same issue but wifi explorer is now working, and the device is responding to ping requests. Winamp sync still needs the DLNA stuff turned on.
I'd have liked to provide a solution but i've absoloutly no idea why it's now working, sorry.
I have had my Sony Tablet S for about 9 months and as I think everyone knows the wifi disconnects randomly. I've found my biggest problem when using Wifi with bluetooth. The network would lose data and then disconnect every 5-20 minutes (sometimes in less than a minute). Thanks to Condi and those involved in the recent break through, I was able to root my r5a. Once I installed Samba Network Fileshare, it seems to have stopped being an issue (at least, no issues within my normal use 30 min - 1 hr at a time). I've used every app designed to fix and force wifi connections I could find with NO success. I have to say I've been close to chucking the tablet as hard as I can against the closest wall, but since root and the Samba install, I've had a much more pleasant experience.
I'm sure there's a question in there somewhere, but for now, I thought I'd share my experience.
The closest thing to a question in this thread would be "What is Samba Network Fileshare doing to fix the network issue that other wifi connection apps would be doing?"
is it the same samba as used in ubuntu to share file from windows pc?
Its probably the same software technology. Its how I use it. but it is by funkyFRESH
Wifi fix Sony Table S (root & install Samba Network Fileshare)
Thanks, I have rooted my Sony Tablet S and installed the "Samba Network Fileshare" app and the wifi speed and stability had a huge improvement.

Hello I wanted to ask I did root my tablet s and i installed samba, I wanted to ask if you have installed and left all the default settings in the app or do you have to suggest?
How did you set the application?
I have a problem with the Wifi on my MXIII-G-II TV Box that sounds similar to what others have described on other Android devices, but is slightly different. Here's what happens:
My TV Box connects to my router via WiFi and will run fine for a while (say for an hour or so, but it varies). Then at some point it will lose connection with the router and the device's WiFi turns off. No amount of turning the WiFi on brings the WiFi back to life. Inspecting the advanced settings menu of the WiFi, reveals that the WiFi has a valid MAC ID, but if you reboot the device the MAC ID is changed to 02:00:00:00:00:00. Unplug the power from the TV box for a while and then start it up once more, the WiFi will work again, but only for some time, before failing again.
I always used the Ethernet port of the device, up until recently, when I wanted to use the WiFi, so I have no idea if this is a software issue, or if the hardware has always been faulty, but I never knew it.
I've read on forums for other devices with the same WiFi MAC ID 02:00:00:00:00:00, that a specific file (WCNSS_qcom_wlan_factory_nv.bin) should be placed in the root/persist folder. Using a root browser reveals that my device has no persist folder in the root. If I create the persist folder manually and place this file there, then sometimes the MAC ID is restored, and the WiFi may or may not work for a little while again, before failing once more. Also after rebooting the device, the persist folder is gone again
I've also read that the wifi and bluetooth of this device run from the same chip - my device's bluetooth works without any problems.
I opened the device and had a look at the board - with the naked eye I couldn't see any obvious problem, but who knows, there could be a loose solder joint on the WiFi chip.
I have also restored Update_MXIII GII rv109 stock ROM to the device via SD card method, in the hope that this might fix whatever firmware issues there might be, but still no difference.
Can anyone confirm that this device should have a persist folder in the root, with certain files pertaining to the WiFi?
If so I find it strange that my device's WiFi works at all. How would I go about permanently restoring the persist folder in the root?
Any other views or advice? Do you reckon it might be faulty hardware, or a firmware issue?
